Book Description

In I Love You Like Crazy Cakes, Rose Lewis and Jane Dyer told the heartfelt story of one woman's adoption a baby girl from China. These sentiments are brought to life again in this touching portrait of birthday celebrations and unforgettable moments between a mother and her little girl: from joyous hugs for a new puppy, to quiet nights gazing at the stars remembering a faraway family. Capturing the richness of both Chinese and American cultures, Every Year on Your Birthday is a poignant tribute to the growing bond of love only a parent and child can know.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Perfectly delightful.......2007-08-01

Once again Rose Lewis and Jane Dyer so perfectly captures an extraordinary aspect of childhood...that being a birthday. The book and the experience of reading it will delight any child and any parent. I loved every word and every picture.

5 out of 5 stars Lewis & Dyer's second gift to the adoption community.......2007-07-29

What a joy to open up that Amazon.com box and see the smiling face of Alexandra Mae-Ming Lewis, daughter of Rose Lewis, starring up at me rendered by Jane Dyer in her familiar and much-loved watercolor illustrations. If you and your little ones enjoyed I Love You Like Crazy Cakes (2000), I think you'll want to take a look at Every Year on Your Birthday.

Aimed at children 4-8 years of age, Every Year on Your Birthday is a sweet, simple and lovely book that illustrates, birthday by birthday, how the lives of Rose Lewis and her daughter have proceeded since they first became entwined in a hotel room in China. I think that many who have adopted from China will be able to identify with both the images and the experiences offered up in the book. For example, with my own girls now 4 and 6, I could identify quite completely with lines like "I think about how quickly your gurgles have turned to giggles." And I was equally moved by Jane Dyer's poignant illustrations showing the little one's progression from toddler to little girl; her illustrations could have been watercolor renderings of many of the snapshots awaiting placement in a scrapbook here at our house!

While Jane Dyer's illustrations were probably my favorite part of the book--I love watercolor and will admit to a particular soft spot for her work--I was also very appreciative of the way the book stayed connected to the child's history before her adoption. For instance, one section of the book celebrates the little girl's relationship with her "first friends," her orphanage "sisters" and those who cared for her in the Social Welfare Institute. And, as was the case in Crazy Cakes, the book offers a remembrance of the child's Chinese birth family, using the idea of looking up at the stars as a point of reference for them and a way to send them good wishes.

With Every Year on Your Birthday Rose Lewis and Jane Dyer have given another gift to the adoption community and to those who wish to better understand the experiences of adoptive families. For some, it will be a way to remind a child of the good time spent; for others, it may be used as a springboard for discussions about birth families and a life before adoption. Either way, it is a beautiful, heartfelt addition to the books on adoption from China.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-07-27

This book lacks the emotional connection of 'Crazy Cakes.' Nice illustrations, but the story struggles to find its way forward.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful, Thoughtful Book for Growing Chinese Adoptees.......2007-05-24

I Love You Like Crazy Cakes came out just as I was completing the paperwork for my daughter's adoption, and Every Year on Your Birthday arrived just in time for my daughter's 4th birthday.

When she opened her present, she held up the book and proclaimed, "It's ME!" I can't overemphasize how important seeing other Asian faces is to my daughter-- and our family goes out of its way to ensure that.

The illustrations are beautiful, the sometimes difficult subject matter of orphanage life is treated sensitively, even positively.

I highly recommend this book for Chinese adoptees-- and even other Asian adoptees-- although the content doesn't *quite* match all experiences, it is an excellent starting off point. For example, we talk about what we did on various birthdays, speculate as to how she celebrated her first birthday before she was adopted, how we celebrated her birthdays and GOTCHA days each year. What a wonderful, easy way to begin sometimes difficult conversations.

An excellent addition to any pro-adoption library!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-05-15

I LOVED her first book and couldn't wait to get this one. I Love You Like Crazy Cakes was great because it was generic enough that it could have my daughter's story. This one was too specific so I had a lot of explaining to do after each page. It is a wonderful book for the author's daughter but it is her story not ours. The illustrations are just as wonderful as the first book.

5 out of 5 stars An Especially Good book for Entertaining. Great ideas!.......2005-06-16

`Rose's Celebrations' by noted author of authoritative `Bibles' on baking cakes, pastries, and bread, Rose Levy Beranbaum has all the appearances of a `throwaway book, given its picture laden cover, oversized format, and the author's aforementioned expertise in baking rather than in savory cooking.

While the book has some limitations as a source of savory recipes, it has many virtues that should appeal to most foodies and amateur cooks.

The very first virtue is Ms. Beranbaum's enthusiasm for cooking and baking of all sorts. Her genuine love of culinary arts and her ability to communicate this passion in words is unmatched, in my opinion, by all but Julia Child, Rick Bayless (see `Rick and Lanie's Excellent Kitchen Adventures'), and Grace Young (see `Breath of a Wok'). I'm not saying there are not lots of great cookbook writers, it's just that Ms. Beranbaum seems to be able to draw one into her culinary world with an unrivaled attraction. For starters, she has one of the very best descriptions of the differences between baking and savory cooking. Everyone who has read a book on baking knows that measurements are much more important in baking than in savory cooking. What is less evident is that this doesn't mean savory cooking is easier. It means that the skills of constant triage needed to monitor the progress of savory cooking require just as much, if not more practical experience to get right. Add to this the variability of meats and vegetables when compared to the high level of uniformity among flours, sugars, butter, and eggs and you start to see that there is more to expert savory cooking than may meet the eye. And this from a baker.

The ability to share her enthusiasm is oddly paired with a highly technical approach to recipes, both savory and baked. As with her baking recipes, many measurements are given in multiple units, by volume, by metric weight, and by Imperial units' weight. This means that the units most familiar to the average amateur are here, but if you happen to be in a position where you have to multiply a recipe by two or four or eight, the weights make this very easy. I also give Ms. Beranbaum high marks for admitting to rounding off the Imperial to metric conversions. I have seen very good cookbook writers have close to 20% discrepancies between Imperial and metric weights or volumes with nary a word of warning.

This level of detail in various units means that this is an excellent book for a caterer. As it happens to be a series of recipes for holidays, the utility to caterers and large-scale entertainers is doubled. This is the only book other than Martha Stewart's classic `Entertaining' which gives good resources for cooking for a crowd of any size. That is, this is the only non-baking book for the amateur that fits this bill. I have seen expensive books for professionals which do this, but they are expensive and not friendly to a non-professional reader.

This book is divided into the four seasons and within each season there are sets of recipes for entertaining various events.

The major events for Winter are New Year's Eve, Washington's Birthday (dessert only), Winter Dinner for Friends and St. Patrick's Day. Spring events are Easter, Passover, and Mother's Day plus miscellaneous dishes for a spring luncheon and a wedding shower. Summer events are Father's Day, Fourth of July, Birthdays, and Labor Day. Fall events are Columbus Day, Halloween (dessert only), Election Day (dessert only), Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and Christmas. A very special bonus is recipes for Glace de Viande and Glace de Volaille (Beef and Poultry Essences or glazes).

The book also contains an alternate table of dishes by type / principle ingredient which identifies dishes of Beverages, Breads, Soups and Stocks, Sauces, Beef, Lamb, Poultry and so on. You get the idea.

If, like me, your main interest is simply collecting good cookbooks and gleaning good ideas from them, this book is definitely a winner. One of the more interesting items I found was a merging of the principles of a court bouillon and a buerre blanc. Ms Beranbaum poached fish in a simple wine, vinegar, shallots, herbs, and oyster liqueur bouillon, then reduced the poaching liquid and added butter to create the buerre blanc. I may want to ask Miss Rose if she possibly forgot to mention anything about straining the chopped shallots from the reduction before adding the butter, but the idea is still a great `two birds with one stone' method.

In looking over her Italian based recipes, you may not want to discard your Marcella Hazan or Mario Batali recipes for these, but they do have some novel ideas, such as the addition of Angostura bitters to the spaghetti (tomato) sauce.

If you are especially fond of formal entertaining more than four people at a time, this may be the best source of recipes you will find. It does not cover as broad a range of events as, for example, Sheila Lukins' `Celebrate', but the recipes are much more impressive for formal occasions.

To make the book a really good resource, it probably should have been about twice this size with better coverage of many events, but at a list price of only $25 and the likelihood of a good discount, I recommend this book as a great `sleeper' find for foodies, culinary readers, and entertainers.

4 out of 5 stars Roses Celebrations.......2000-07-04

The photography is spectacular as always with Roses books. I just made my first recipe from the book: Lavender Ice Cream on pg 93 and came across a discrepancy that I hope does not echo throughout the entire tome. The first one is the fact that you're to use a SMALL saucepan and stir the yolks (5.25 ozs), part of the sugar and salt and add 32 ozs. of hot cream/milk to this mixture. A small saucepan is usually 1 qt to 1-1/2 qts and too small for a recipe this size. In addition, the lavender does not get strained as is shown in the photo. In terms of visuals and texture, it doesn't get high marks, although the flavor is absolutely heavenly. I would suggest steeping the lavender in the hot cream/milk, making the creme anglaise and then straining the entire thing. Since this is my first recipe, it would be unfair to rate all the recipes as problematic. The recipes do seem very good.

5 out of 5 stars one of my favorite cookbooks.......1999-05-29

This is a colorful, well-illustrated cookbook with recipes for many kinds of celebrations. The recipes I've tried work well and are delicious, and the author's obsessively detailed style makes it easy to follow her recipes. It is worth trying to find this book.

I love Rose Levy Beranbaum's cookbooks, but this one is one of her best! The recipes are explained in full detail, with tips on how to avoid the most common problems. There are gorgeous full color photos and well thought out serving ideas. The recipes are all wonderful, especially the chocolate orange cheesecake, lamb osso buco, graavlax, cookies, and of course her beautifully decorated cakes. The book also includes staple recipes, and listings of where to buy some of the more exotic ingredients and suggestions for those that are less daring. An all around wonderful cookbook

Over the past 300 years, America's table has been enhanced by countless immigrant cultures as well as her regional cooks. In her latest book, Rose Levy Beranbaum, perhaps the most gifted cooking teacher in America, adapts many of these dishes for the American Kitchen. As always, with Rose's books, this one draws on her years of experience in teaching to explain in the clearest and simplist language how to make the most delectable and delightful foods with ease.

CHAPTERS INCLUDE: Soups and appetizers, bread, main courses, side dishes, vinegarettes, sauces, stocks, brunch, desserts, beverages.

It's quite amazing how incredibly talented Rose truly is. She has been such an inspiration to me, sharing her wisdom and her words; I am myself on my way to a wonderful life of culinary adventures, beginning with an education at the Culinary Institute of America! "Rose's Melting Pot" walks the reader through extraordinary new territories in the world of food. She carefully chose the most interesting, comforting, exciting, and delicious dishes that totally tantalize one's taste buds! I have already dabbled with a few of the recipes and, just as always, her descriptions were most exacting and her recipes consistently precise. I always feel like I have Rose right in the kitchen with me when preparing any dish- whether right from her pages or the creation of anyone else. And this book continues right on that path! ...My favorites, so far, are the Trellis Roasted Garlic Soup, Walnut Fougasse, Japanese Chirashi Sushi, Endive & Walnut Salad w/ Raspberry Walnut Vinaigrette, Mexican Killer Kahlua Chiffon Cake (YuMMy! ).. To anyone, I HIGHLY recommend this magnificent book to anybody who enjoys trying international favorites.. Bon appetit!

We really liked the illustration and the funny poems and the good moral of the book. There wasn't anything really that we didn't like while reading it.

The moral of the story is really good because it teaches kids to always be nice to peole no matter what. Even if people are are mean to you it is important to always be nice and polite and this book does a great job of teaching that. It helps kids see what can happen when people dont treat other people like they would want to be treated.
The illustration in this book were very cute. They were very creative and they kept kids interested.
This really is a great book and kids would really like to listen to this story. They would enjoy the illustations and they would remember the characters long after reading the book.

5 out of 5 stars Valentine's Day with a Message.......2001-01-31

Gilbert has a real dilemma. He's writing poems on his Valentine cards, for his classmates, but doesn't want to write something nice to Lewis and Margaret. Lewis tweaked his nose and made it red and Margaret said mean things about him in front of the class. So he decides to write each an unkind poem and instead of signing his own name, since he's afraid they'll be angry, he signs Lewis's name to Margaret's card and Margaret's name to Lewis's Valentine. It doesn't take long before Margaret and Lewis figure out who really gave them these mean cards and they, along with the rest of the class won't have anything to do with Gilbert. First he has to eat lunch all alone, no one will sit with him and at then at recess, no one will play with him. As soon as he gets back to class, Gilbert gets to work making new cards for Lewis and Margaret and apologizing for his unkindness. As the class party begins all is forgiven and Lewis, Margaret and Gilbert are friends again..... Diane De Groat has written a simple, charming story with a powerful message about the importance of second chances, that youngsters 4-8 will easily understand. Her gentle text and wonderful watercolor illustrations really capture the small hurts and slights kids experience and her positive, uplifting ending and sensible solution should open good discussions at home and at school.

4 out of 5 stars Quintessential NorthWest Cuisine.......2006-05-23

I bought this book a few days ago. It is already a very favorite cookbook (and I have quite a collection). It is one of those rare cookbooks where you want to try almost every recipe. Many of the recipes are native Northwest cuisine (yes, we do have our own cuisine in this neck of the woods) but it also includes recipes that span foods from the the Southwest to Europe.

Well worth the money. Highly recommended.

Book Description

In print since it was first published in 1979, this book is a glorious collection of American folk art by "ordinary" women of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Filled with beautiful four-color reproductions of samplers, quilts, paintings, and needle-pictures along with excerpts from diaries and letters, sampler verse, books, and magazines of the period, Anonymous Was a Woman celebrates the daily experiences and inner lives of women who, in acts of love and duty, created many masterpieces of American folk art.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Anonymous Was a Woman, a treasure.......2007-01-17

I love this book! As a needle woman myself, the accounts of other such women were dear to my heart. I gave it to my mother who taught me to sew and embroider and was sorry my grandmother who taught my mother was no longer living to share it with her. I particularly liked how the book divided the stages of the early women's lives and connected the stitcheries with journal entries. Some of the quotations are expressions of my own feelings. Anyone who uses a needle would find this a gem.

5 out of 5 stars A Scream of Creation.......2004-03-17

Quilted together with common thread, the lives of the women glimpsed at in Anonymous Was A Woman scream of creation; however, not creation of life but creation of freedom using the few avenues of expression available. The women themselves were the art which they sought so earnestly to produce, and this is evidenced in their pastel speech and charcoal lives. When told to choose what piece within the book most interested me, I thought, "an easy task to undertake." I planned to find a colorful character that would most attract a reader's attention and paint a portrait of her. Now I find that task not so simple. To take away from this book a single characterization, whether glossy or matte, would be to deconstruct the perfect quilt. I do not choose to unravel what these women created; therefore, all I can say is that what I enjoy most about Anonymous Was A Woman is the ability that the chosen women have to blanket us with their lives and keep us warm even today.

4 out of 5 stars how many women artists can you name?.......2000-08-15

One day in an education class, my professor asked how many female artists can you name? Granted none of the people in the class were art majors but at most we came up with two, Virgina Woolfe and Mary Casset. Many people could not name any female artists. I found it astounding that in the history of western art, I could only think of two women painters. Taking the suggestion this professor, I decide to read the book "Anonymous was a woman" by Mirra Blank. I found the book intriguing and was impressed at its unveiling of how important domestic crafts like samplers and quilts were to women in the late eighteenth century and nineteenth century. The book has great photographs and anecdotal information that gives insight to the female mind of this time period. The images include quilts, velvet, and watercolor paintings. Excerpts are taken from the diaries of famous women like Louisa May Alcott and anonymous women who have been forgotten. The author also includes certain male points of view with repect to proper female conduct and love. I thought this book was great at revealing how many female artists there have been and their contribution to the American landscape.

Book Description

More than 30 years ago, acclaimed author and Chicago Sun-Times sports columnist Rick Telander was drafted out of Northwestern University by a Kansas City Chiefs team filled with future Pro Football Hall of Famers and coached by the legendary Hank Stram. Telander recently found the tattered, spiral-bound journal he kept while in that training camp and, after re-reading the entries he kept until being cut from the team, was amazed and moved by the life lessons he took away from that once-in-a-lifetime experience and how they can be applied to people's lives today. In Like a Rose: A Thoughtful Celebration of Football, Rick Telander reproduces his training-camp journal, following each entry with his views today on how those unique events and the heartbreak of not being able to fulfill his NFL dream helped propel him into a life as one of the country's most highly respected and well-known sportswriters. Telander, whose other books include Heaven is a Playground, ranked as the 15th best sports book of all-time by Sports Illustrated, hopes to show how a game some see as being violent can instead offer lessons that people from any walk of life can understand. He also promises to explain the poignancy behind the enigmatic title, Like a Rose.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Like a rose indeed!.......2006-01-30

I loved this book. Not only does Rick Telander reprint his journal from his training camp with the Kansas City Chiefs, he also includes his current perspective on it. This is a very introspective and personal book, yet it also serves as just a great read.
On the reflective side, Telander intersperses his current life with the life that the journal contained. Telander balances his love of sports with the love of his family, particularly his athletic son.
On the simpler level, it is a great look at life for a rookie in a pro football training camp thirty years ago. Telander's experiences with some great football players and just some good names from the past really brought back some great memories for me of a simpler time in sports and life.
Either way, this book works on all levels.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Pretty Christmas Story That Doesn't Offend Anyone.......2007-01-24

Let me start off by saying that I am a Christian who knows that Christmas is about the birth of Jesus Christ. That being said, this little book is about a new baby pony named Rose Blossom and her first experience with a Christmas party in Ponyville. Although it never mentions Jesus, it also doesn't mention Santa either, which makes it a nice, neutral story about a happy party taking place during Christmas. The book's cover is beautiful and glittery.

Book Description

What could be more awesome than celebrating your birthday with the animals in the zoo! Especially when they're putting on the party. The raccoons blow up balloons, the bats pass out the hats, the lynx pours all the drinks. There's never been a party as wild as this!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Can My Next Birthday Party Be Like This One?.......2004-11-09

This book delivers on the promise in its jacket cover with Rose's enchanting, lilting rhymes and Munsinger's uproarious and lively watercolor illustrations of a zoo full of animals putting on a birthday party for a delighted young boy. It is "a birthday present to open again and again." The irresistible rhymes include: "'But where to begin?' asked the shy tamarin. `Blow up balloons.' puffed the raccoons." Laughter or at least a broad smile will erupt when this verse is read in its full-spread illustration of eight raccoons eagerly blowing up colorful birthday balloons and cheerfully floating up to the ceiling with them while a bewildered tamarin looks on. Similar hilarious delights fill the entire book as the animals progress from setting up the party to a playful and joyous celebration complete with presents, games, and cake. But, don't forget to turn the over the last page or you'll miss a great surprise. Highly recommended for ages 2 to 6

5 out of 5 stars The most exciting birthday celebration ever.......2002-11-15

Birthday Zoo is a joyful picture book by Deborah Lee Rose about the most exciting birthday celebration ever. A whimsical poem about fun activities suggested by various playful animal friends, and cheerful color illustrations by Lynn Munsinger make Birthday Zoo an upbeat, entertaining, and highly recommended picture book for beginning readers.

5 out of 5 stars A ZOO-FULL OF GREETINGS.......2002-10-01

What do children enjoy more than a birthday party? Young folks find a visit to the zoo exciting. The combination of the two in "Birthday Zoo" is bound to bring smiles of delight.

Illustrated in engaging watercolors and presented in catchy rhyme, the story opens with a question, "`Hey, what's the big deal?'" noticed the seal." When it's discovered that the big deal is a birthday preparations begin.

"`What do we do?' asked the emu. `Make everyone happy,' said the okapi." And that's precisely what this joyful narrative will do as balloons are blown up, party hats distributed, and refreshments served.

At the last, imagine being wished happy birthday by a whole zoo!
