    Book Description

We buy more flowers a year than we do Big Macs, spending $6.2 billion annually. We use them to mark our most important events, to express sentiments that might otherwise go unsaid. And we demand perfection. So it’s no surprise that there is a $40 billion global industry devoted to making flowers flawless.

Amy Stewart takes us inside the flower trade—from the hybridizers, who create new varieties in the laboratory, to the growers, who produce flowers by the millions (often in a factory-like setting), to the Dutch auctioneers, who set the bar (and the price), and ultimately to the neighborhood florists orchestrating the mind-boggling demands of Valentine’s and Mother’s Day. There’s the breeder intent on developing the first blue rose; an eccentric horticultural legend who created the world’s most popular lily; a grower of gerberas of every color imaginable; and the equivalent of a Tiffany diamond: the “ Forever Young” rose.

Stewart explores the relevance of flowers in our lives and in our history, and in the process she reveals all that has been gained—and lost—by tinkering with nature.

5 out of 5 stars Truly a master class in floral design.......2007-06-19

This book is amazing! Detailed, gorgeous photos and instructions to create the best floral arrangements of your life. New ideas on every page, lots of suggestions for supplies and techniques.

4 out of 5 stars Gave me Inspiration.......2007-06-04

I chose this book to help me get ready for a State Flower show. I found the photos and designs inspirational to me. Paula Pryke's material selection is outstanding and she's thinking outside the box. The content is not too textbook, technical or preachy, but simply laid out. There is limited information about the mechanics of creating a design which is why I give it a 4.
I'm happy to say my design won a blue ribbon.

    3 out of 5 stars Just Ok!.......2007-04-17

Great pictures and ideas, but not for the beginning florist. If your just starting out, have no experience and trying to learn the art of floral design, this is not the book for you to learn.

5 out of 5 stars Paula Pryke's Flower School: Mastering the Art of Floral Design .......2007-03-30

    Excellent....just as advertised.

3 out of 5 stars Paula Pryke's Flower School: Mastering the Art of Floral Design.......2006-11-10

As a budding floral arranger I thought this book was a bit limited from
an educational standpoint. The pictures are beautiful but there weren't
many creative designs. I was hoping for an instructional book on how
to do designs and was dissapointed.

      Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

4 out of 5 stars A good book for the lover of flower arrangement.......2007-01-10

This book is a good tool for anyone interested in learning how to arrange flowers. It has beautiful pictures and good explanations on mechanics and how to do most of the arrangements, however, the most difficult and therefore prettier do not have much instructions, so you also need to use a little imagination.

4 out of 5 stars The Complete Book of Floral Design.......2006-02-22

This is a great book for visual pictures of different arrangements and ideas you may want to put together!! Lots of pretty pictures!

      4 out of 5 stars beautiful book.......2005-09-30

I love the book, and there is some great advice in it but I was looking for abit more of a "how-to" type of book. The book is mostly photos of her work with a black and white section of some instructional aspects of making bouquets, etc. There is also a small encyclopedia-like section of flowers which explains some aspects to the flowers but does not include general price range. I was hoping it would be the only book I needed to buy to do my wedding flowers, but I don't think it will be.

      Book Description

This book creates a whole new aesthetic for flowers. Paula Pryke breaks the mold of conventional flower arranging so successfully that this visionary collection of arrangements gives real meaning to the term floral art. Her originality, ingenuity and dramatic use of raw materials are key to the strong visual impact, vibrancy and always perfectly harmonious arrangements she creates. Stunningly photographed, the book is both a rich sourcebook of fresh and stylish ideas and a highly practical guide enabling the amateur to create dozens of artistic arrangements for every occasion. The multiplicity of flowers available today offers almost limitless scope for flower arrangers. Part of the book's novel approach is to encourage experimentation and innovation by showing how to mix some of the less familiar flowers now appearing on the market, with the more typical.

How to create celebration arrangements for anniversaries, Christmas, the New Year, Easter, Hallowe'en, Mother's Day, weddings, birthdays and house warmings. Which containers to choose to complement arrangements: pottery, china, wood, basketry or metal, and how to make unusual natural containers from vegetables and foliage. How to arrange flowers according to particular color schemes, through the spectrum of reds, yellows and greens to blues, whites and mixed combinations. Selecting floral themes, whether formal or informal, period or modern, scented, edible or tropical. Easy-to-follow, step-by-step photographs and an illustrated chapter on techniques show you how to achieve perfect results. A comprehensive gazetteer acts as a reference guide to over 300 flowers. In Flowers, Flowers!, the artistry and expertise of Paula Pryke's masterful flower arranging skills are now accessible for the first time, to capture the imagination, teach and inspire.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Flower Arrangement as an Art Form.......2006-08-08

Paula Pryke is an artist is every sense of the word. Coming across this magnificently and luxuriously illustrated book is like discovering a famous artist new to you. The topic is 'Inspired Arrangements for All Occasion' and both the writing and illustrations certainly prove that claim to be true.

But what is so very different in this rich volume than in other volumes on flower arranging is the unique approach to the medium. Pryke's keen eye combines not only flowers of every possible kind (from simple wild garden blossoms to the most exotic of species from strange lands), but she also sees vegetable, seeds, gourds, branches, twigs, moss, vines - all are of equal importance to her choices for synthesis of her amazing creations.

Some Floral designers elect to create books about their craft that are limited to beautifully photographed final arrangements. Paula Pryke, with a winning writing style, takes us through the puzzling mysteries of how she finds and assembles the components of her art. She also separates the book into simple works, arrangements according to a unified color scheme, and arrangements and accoutrements that are celebratory for holidays and special occasions.

Whether this book is added to the library as a coffee table adornment (sure to be admired by all discerning guests) or as a guide to creative floral design, FLOWERS, FLOWERS! is an artwork containing some of the most exquisite floral you will encounter. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, August 06

4 out of 5 stars all you want to know about flower arrangement.......2006-02-25

This book has all you would like to know about flower arrangement. Starting from how the flowers make it to the market(from the growers) ,to the Common names and Latin names of the different flower species. There are superb pictures of 100s of arrangements for different occassions and step by step descriptions of how to do some of them. What I liked the most , was the last chapter called techniques, it has a thorough description of all the equipment one needs to do these elaborate arrangents. However, for a complete beginner like me , this book might seem too intense as the arrangements are quite elaborate. At any rate, it makes a good coffee table read.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best.......2002-03-28

There is no need for a lengthy review of this book. Quite simply, it contains photos of the most beautiful floral arrangements I have ever seen. I enjoy it often with a sense of awe and envy.

I have been running my own floral design business for parties and special events for two years now, and this book has proved itself to be one of my most valuable resources. A very diverse collection of arrangements is found throughout the pages of this book and I would rate it as a definite asset to the library of both professionals and flower lovers alike.

      5 out of 5 stars Must-have for floral designers.........2007-08-26

As a floral designer myself, I have been searching for a visual guide to fresh cut flowers for years. This book not only features cut flowers, but has a section on foliage as well. The expected life spans and common names are provided. This book is the encyclopedia of flowers that I have been looking for!

5 out of 5 stars Love Love Love It!.......2007-06-27

I'm 21 and I run my own flower shop. I know my way around a design bench, but unfortunately my inexperience has left me with a limited knowledge of cut flowers and foliages. This book has helped me so much! And the CD Rom is amazing. You can search for flowers by species, family, even color and distinguishing characteristics! Definately two thumbs waaay up!

      3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected............2007-03-07

I bought this book thinking it was another book. I was going to return it, but it does serve its purpose at the moment. I wish the photographs were larger. I thought a bit pricey for what it was and the cd rom is not Mac compatable, so I have no use for it!

4 out of 5 stars CD included, and its good!.......2006-11-16

Overall, this is a good buy, and as others have noted, a great staple for the floral designer. I love the disk - you can run a search for "pink flowers," for example, and all flowers with pink variations fed back to you in list form -- you are then able click on the list for pictures of each flower. I wasn't sure if the CD would be included (although it is mentioned on the cover of the book in the picture shown, it is not referred to in the product description) and was pleased to see it is indeed part of the package. I only wish they showed all the color varieties for each genus--instead, there is just one picture and the color variations are listed. With roses, for example, it would be nice to see the many popular types used in common arrangements --vendelas, cool water, versalia....

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book.......2002-07-14

I just got this book today and I am so happy that I purchased it. It is the perfect reference book that i have been looking for. It has great pictures of the flowers and foliage , pronunciation as well as design applications. Great book, a must have to all beginner florist.

This greatly revised and expanded edition of Specialty Cut Flowers offers a unique perspective on cut flower production, bringing together in one place the information growers need to propagate and cultivate their eye-catching plants. Introductory chapters offer a discussion of domestic and foreign production, a brief overview of trends, and general comments and techniques for the postharvest care of flowers, including drying and preserving. The main body of the book gives extensive coverage of annual, perennial, bulbous, and woody species for commercial cut flower production, including propagation and growing-on methods, environmental factors, yield in the field, greenhouse forcing, stage of harvest, postharvest handling, and pests and diseases. For easier reference, plants now appear in single, straightforward A-to-Z order. Reflecting decades of research and writing by two distinguished horticulturists, Specialty Cut Flowers, Second Edition, Revised and Enlarged will be an indispensable reference for the nursery bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Reference for the Cut Flower Grower.......2001-07-29

Everyone interested in cut flower growing must have this text in his library. Allan Armitage is a renound researcher in herbaceous plants, who's earlier work was in specialty cut flowers. This is a serious text, not a "gardening" book.

Introductory sections give basics of cut flower growing, but the bulk of the book is devoted to discussing individual species. Chapters include annuals, perennials, bulbs, and woody species. Within each chapter, species are discussed in great detail. Everything you need to know to grow each cut flower is here: propagation, greenhouse and field performance, harvest and postharvest, pests and diseases, and lists of varieties are all given for each species.

This book is very well organized. Text is concise, but written with personality. There are line drawings for many species, but there are few color photographs.

This book is specificaly for cut flower growers. Lynn Bycznski's The Flower Farmer is another book not be missed by those interested in cut flower growing. Her book is an overview of the business and process of cut flower growing, also with some information on individual species. Another excellent Armitage text, Herbaceous Perennial Plants, is better suited for the serious gardener.

      Book Description

Few things are more beautiful than a bouquet of flowers, and growing and cutting your own adds immeasureably to the pleasure a bouquet brings. In this book, illustrated with 50 inspiring color photographs, the gardener's cut-flower season extends from late winter, with shrubs and trees to force indoors, through the spring and summer flowers -- bulbs, annuals, perennials -- the "everlastings" you can grow for winter's dried flower bouquets. Especially valuable are the sections on when and how to cut flowers, how to condition them, and suggestions on combining different flowers into carefree arrangements. The basic mechanics of flower arranging and photos of home-grown bouquets will encourage novice gardeners.

5 out of 5 stars Best Conditioning Advice Ever.......2007-04-04

Yes, she spends a great deal of time chatting with growers, but this book has the BEST info on conditioning that you will find in a mass-market offering. Just as top chefs will alter recipes so that no one can duplicate their materpieces exactly, most flower growers are very tight-lipped about their secrets and will write pages and pages without giving specifics. Lee manages to extract wonderful information from her subjects.

Horticulture and marketing specifics are available in hundreds of other places: only here will you find a reliable guide to the best cut flowers and real, plant-specific conditioning practices. I used her advice for Cleome and won a blue ribbon at the county fair (the flowers lasted 2 weeks in the vase!). I use this book as my ultimate guide to plant selection and conditioning, and she has never steered me wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Full of information.......2006-09-07

Not even remotely "amateurish." I've met this author in person and she has helped many become successful flower farmers, even from backyards. People learn in different ways and need different points to begin or to get re-inspired. Some learn best in "whole brain" ways from hearing another's story, and they have the brains and make-up to take it from there. Others are looking for left brain hemisphere technical analysis which is probably better found on the Internet. This book is perfect for many. Who is the grouchy sounding person from Ireland who sounds like he thinks all books are supposed to be custom written just for him, and if not, they're worthless to the world? Would he be interested in revealing his occupation in life and allowing himself to be publically ranked with one star which would help cut off his income and reputation if he doesn't think exactly like we do?

1 out of 5 stars amatuerish, vague and completely lacking in critical detail.......2002-02-12

This title of this book does not accurately reflect the content. It is extremely vague, completely lacking in any technical detail regarding crop production, expected yield per acerage used, costs involved, marketing/selling etc. I can sum this book up in one sentence "I grew some flowers and sold them in my local shop and I dont know how or why I was successful at this practice." This really is a worthless book...the author has a very homely style which reinforces the impression that she is a complete amateur at this business. She runs out of anything useful to say after a couple of chapters and sets off to tell the life-story of her flower-growing acquaintances without paying much notice to the technical and scientific detail of their various ventures. If you are hoping to get some serious insights into growing flowers and developing marketing strategies for selling those flowers, forget it....do not buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars great information from growing to conditioning flowers.......2001-03-09

great information. she interviewed growers and marketers of all types of florals, dried and fresh. her advice about growing, cutting, conditioning and marketing will be invaluable. written so that the layman understands. i like the many interview with people actually doing this (not a bunch of academic morons with no life experience just spouting rhetoric.).
