5 out of 5 stars Very interesting book .......2005-08-25

Yes this is the fist resource and most important one for hostas. It is a bit dated but the vast majority of the information will alway be relevant. Also he was certainly ahead of his time, on many topics, Many of his arguments are just becoming relevant today. A case in point, he nailed the hottest topic in hosta-ville today cold way back in 1990, Hosta virus X or HVX, well before it even had a name or was though of as a virus. This book plus a couple newer ones is all you need to be up and running with the best of them, and then some, because ha, most of them are to lazy to read. No, I did not say that, did I?? As to reading level, well it is grade 17 so a good dictionary is needed. I wish some one would tell me how to get that "The Virginia" off it's ridiculous.

5 out of 5 stars "Must have" reference on the #1 perennial plant in the USA!.......1997-01-20

W. George Schmid, recipient of the 1996 Alex J. Summers Distinguished Merit Award--the highest honor of the American Hosta Society, has compiled a comprehensive and instructive reference for Hosta. He explains in photographs (incl. 208 in color) and words more information than available in any other source for these marvelous and increasingly popular shade plants--The #1 selling perennial in the USA. I believe I own all the books published on Hosta, and this is incomparable--better than all the others combined. Species and cultivars are listed alphabetically with detailed information. Make it your first choice. Our nursery specializes in Hostas, including being the exclusive source for George Schmid's new introductions, so I am very familiar with this topic

5 out of 5 stars Fanciful, magical bedtime story..........2006-04-22

My children love this beautifully illustrated nighttime tale by artist Dar Hosta! The story is both captivating and instructive, allowing children of all ages to learn more about nocturnal creatures, and the accompanying illustrations are lovely to look at. A great find and highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Night time read.......2005-09-22

The colors are bright. The book jacket and pages are satiny smooth. Dar Hosta's medium is collage and both books are lovely examples of that technique. Art teachers are often looking for additional examples to share with students besides Eric Carle and Ezra Jack Keats. She also uses oil pastel, colored pencil and digital effects to complete her work. The staring eyes of the animals in the books are digital.

I enjoyed I Love the Night. Her words flow creating a gentle, quiet, night-time atmosphere. Teachers can use the books to teach adjectives, adverbs, and alliteration. Each page is full of them.

5 out of 5 stars We, too, love the night!".......2004-10-22

Even the most stubborn bedtime resister will fall asleep and dream of soaring with the owl, singing soulfully with the whippoorwills, and eating fruit with the fruit bats that carry Hosta's lyrical words from page to beautifully illustrated page. The swish of bats, the "fabulously fabulous" joy and rapture of frogs at the magnificence of the night, and the gentle sounds of Hosta's words will lull your child to sleep.

5 out of 5 stars A Diamond In A Slush Pile!.......2004-08-28

Every once in a while, a diamond sparkles on top of the slush pile. I LOVE THE NIGHT authored and illustrated by University of Missouri-Columbia creative writing graduate, Dar Hosta is one of these rare finds.

Her spare writing and little details sparkle with wit and warmth. In a language geared to a young audience, she awakens nightly creatures. Her use of double adjectives:
" marvelously marvelous - delightfully delightful" emphasize her marvel at the beauties of the night. Under the blue glow of the moon, you become acquainted with all kinds of earthly creatures from fireflies, crickets, a giant octopus, frogs, raccoons, to of course an owl.

The book's illustrations are a real showcase of an amazing talent. Combining collage, oil pastel, colored pencil and a digital graphics tablet, she has created brilliant scenes and fantastic creatures that nearly leap off the page. Every page is a labor of love, although
my favorite spreads are the frog and the raccoon.

A fun thing to experiment with children is to have them try and guess what material Dar Hosta has used for her collages. For example, the moon (and here I am guessing!) is made of lint sheets for the dryer. Also the frog collage could be made of kitchen paper towels among other found objects.

Dar Hosta's art in I LOVE THE NIGHT dominates the book giving it a quality that will attract young and older readers alike. I LOVE THE NIGHT is a true diamond on your child's night table that will indeed make for a sweet dreamy night. No wonder this book has earned the Teachers Choice Award Learning Magazine for the Family 2004!

5 out of 5 stars A delightful and original children's picture book.......2003-07-27

I Love The Night by author/illustrator Dar Hosta is a delightful and original children's picture book remarkably enhanced with unique paper collage creations, which depict the various creatures and plants that are active throughout the evening hours in the heart of a swampy rain forest. A gentle story perfectly suited for reading aloud to young ones before bedtime, I Love The Night is especially commended for children ages 3 to 8.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Reference.......2007-08-26

I am thrilled with this book. I am highlighting the ones in my garden and several of my family and friends are using their own colors to highlight their hostas. What a nice record of our gardens. I'm glad I found the book. And I got it in only two days!

5 out of 5 stars Now I know........2007-08-23

A wonderfull reference book. I was finally able to identify some of my hosta's correctly. More important I now have a list of the ones I want.

4 out of 5 stars an informative work but not an encyclopedia .......2007-07-23

The author makes a concerted effort to bring to you the vast numbers of hostas available today in a concise way. The book is designed to assist you in finding the hosta that best suites your needs. It does not meet the definition of an Encyclopedia, the species and cultivars are not arranged alphabetically, however in alphabetical order by the way they look, an informative work but not an encyclopedia. So the name of the book is yet another marketing ploy. For me, I can only use the book by way of index. It does have some information that's hard to find elsewhere. They make a darn good hit at getting info on some of the best hostas available and some that are barely available. It is not a five star book but it is a solid four star. The pictures woo the ladies but men want content, we know that a hosta may only look that way for one week in spring.

5 out of 5 stars Great Pictorial Reference.......2007-07-09

My husband and I love to collect hostas and although we have numerous varities, over the years we have failed to keep a record of the name and genus of the individual hosta. We decided to purchase this colorful book as a reference to help us know just what we have and the location where it is located. We plan to do a better job labeling our purchases and this book has already proved to be extremely helpful giving us the necessary info to identify our hosta. The book also contains information regarting growing requirements.

We feel it was a great purchase at a great low Amazon price! We highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-07-03

Very informative, wonderful pictures, very useful when planning for the purchase or layout of a hosta garden! I'm very fortunate that there is a botannical garden/large hosta collection in my area that sells hundreds of different hosta varieties. With their price lists and this delightful book, I've been able to do my homework first, then go shopping and have created quite the diverse hosta/shade garden, with unique specimins not found at most run of the mill retailers. Again, this is a great book!

Book Description

The definitive guide to a popular hardy perennial.

The growing popularity of hostas can be credited to their colorful beauty, longevity and ability to grow successfully just about anywhere. Hosta foliage comes in astonishing variations. From blue, green, yellow to multicolored, the leaves appear in all manner of shape, size and texture.

Their growing season stretches from early spring to late fall. The plant's flower ranges in color from white to pale lavenders and blue-purples. For gardeners in colder climates, the best part is that hostas flourish to Zone 3 -- virtually all of continental United States as well as populated areas of Canada and Alaska.

Hostas introduces modern, busy gardeners to the charms of this beautifully diverse plant. After a brief section on the fascinating history of hostas, the book covers growing the various cultivars in fine detail.

Topics include:

Illustrated with color photographs throughout, Hostas is a valuable resource for modern, creative gardeners.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hosta's in your garden.......2006-07-10

Excelent book for the average gardener. This book concentrates on using Hosta's in the garden with other plants. Gives lots of suggestions in choosing color and texture to add interest and accent other plants as well as showing hosta's to their fullest potential. Also covers how hosta's grow, dividing, planting and hosta care disease and prevention. Wonderful color photo's.

5 out of 5 stars Hostas.......2006-06-04

Informative book for the hosta lover. Advice on growing, companion plants and combination design suggestions for a stunning shade garden. Breath-taking photos. A book you'll enjoy looking through again and again.

3 out of 5 stars Pleasurable reading .......2005-07-24

It was a pleasure to read this book and worthwhile. However I am a person looking for more of a book that doesn't put it all on the line. She states in the book on pg. 27 that she does not like to write about pest and diseases however she does imparts some useful information for the novice hosta grower, but not nearly enough for an enthusiast. This is a good little book for the half hearted gardener. This is certainly not a book to hold as any type of real reference material.

5 out of 5 stars Hostas inspires.......2004-09-17

'Hostas' by Rosemary Barrett is well written, thoroughly researched and a pleasure to read. The photographs are first-rate and will inspire anyone who is landscaping in the shade. The reference sections of the book seems very thorough - although I am no expert! This is a book that can truly be judged by its cover: well designed, well-produced and beautifully presented.

Very easy to read and understand -and the book is the perfect size to bring with you to a nursery when Hosta shopping. This guy really knows his Hostas!

5 out of 5 stars Useful handbook.......2005-07-03

I've learned a lot about all the Hosta varieties... how they compare and contrast to each other so I can figure out what I'm actually buying and where I should plant them, how large they can get and what they will be like when mature, and have gotten a basic concept of how the varieties were developed over the years. Very useful, it is a handbook for understanding the hobby of Hostas and does that job well.

Not really a "coffee table" type book if that is what you want, even thou the pictures are good

5 out of 5 stars Best Little Hosta Book Out There!.......2005-01-05

Absolutely the BEST book on hostas that I have found so far. When I first opened the package this book came in, I laughed to myself and said, "Gee, I didn't order half a book!" The book is spiral bound, 600 pages - but only 9" x 4.25" (page size) so it looks like someone chopped the book in half!

Nevertheless, this book is crammed full of great information on many of the hosta cultivars you will be able to find for sale. And because of it's size, it should be easy to bring along when I go "hosta hunting." I would imagine it would be almost impossible to write one book and include information about all - there are just too many cultivars in the hosta world!

I heartily recommend this book to anyone who wants the useful information at their fingertips - while looking through online selections or as a field guide while shopping or just exploring a garden!

5 out of 5 stars The last word in hosta reference books.......2004-06-04

Zilis's book is excellent. More than just pretty pictures, he gives solid information on the varied world of hostas. Climate, plant quirks, personal observations, as well as leaf size, color, growth habits and more. This book is superior and makes the other hosta books in my library look like simple picture books.

If you're going to buy a solid hosta reference book, buy this one.

A timeless topic with a fun, fresh face. For the pre-reader, I LOVE THE ALPHABET has proved to be a wonderful read aloud title, encouraging children to predict the stanza's end rhyme, delighting them with alliteration, and dazzling them with vibrant, colorful illustrations that have been compared to the work of beloved illustrators such as Eric Carle and Lois Ehlert. While alphabet books are typically targeted for the PreK-1 group, I LOVE THE ALPHABET has appeal for older age groups as well, as it highlights language arts topics such as alliteration and rhyme, and visual arts appeal for its usage of cut paper collage. I LOVE THE ALPHABET has a timely release, just in time for the back to school book lists.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars So Many Hostas So Little Planet.......2000-02-24

Buy this for the plant list. It is easy to spend more than the book price on a modest bunch of Hostas at some garden center, or a lot more, if you are in a big hurry. Grenfell tells us more than those pretty tags do, and even says some of the things they are likely to neglect. I would wish that she had been more explicit about the range of what one is likely to get in the way of plant sizes as one tries to compare garden center, nursery, and catalog prices and outcomes. Hosta "August Moon," p. 99, for example, is a wonderful plant here, pretty much as described, but the late-season potful I got at a garden center in the late 1980's took more than five years to get there; "Large," from what had looked, "Miniature" to "Small" when I bought it. The author may wish to pretend that the people she wishes to address do not haunt the close-out tables at regional garden centers and discount retailers or catalog web sites, but those are places where good information can help you find the good stuff. Likewise for dividing the mature clumps of unlabeled Hostas in the garden of the old house my sister bought in 1998. (Yes! Those purple shoots are Hosta "Patriot," p. 130.) Grenfell grows her Hostas in England, where USDA Zone 6 is thought to be rugged and my Zone 5 is thought to be a howling Russian or alpine wilderness, so she misses out on the strengths that Dr. Rieth was able to deploy so effectively in the cold of Upper Penninsula Michigan, but the advice she gives on growing perfectly awesome Hostas,in Chapter Five, is worth paying attention to.

Grenfell pulls in essays by other experts to cover some of the territory she is not entirely familiar with, but the coordination between the text she wrote and what they wrote is not as tight as I would wish. When Dr. Pollock addresses the H. plantaginea's need for heat and some sun on p.86, he does not contrast North American performance, where long hot summers bloom them right up into Zone 4, to the English performance that Grenfell reports as; unlikely to bloom most years because the growing season is so much cooler. Less careful readers might follow her advice to plant warm, and end up with plants that get frost bitten for coming up too early, and then fried in July and August, or even June.

(Well, it is long and talky. Editing is ok, to be sure, but I do like to put some content in to support my assertions. It would have been helpful to have a word count utility pop up here or in the Perview version so I could get a better sense of how far I have gone here. Paragraphing would be nice too.)

5 out of 5 stars This book covered all aspects of growing hosta........1999-06-26

I read every book on hostas that I could find. When I read Grenfell's book I knew it was one I needed to own, and I purchased it. It covered ever aspect of growing hostas. Elemaniting a lot of bad hearsay advise. The information is consice and easy to read. The technical information is all there as well as information for novice gardners.

There is a well written chapter on propagation that will help any gardener increase their number of plants. Its not just for professionals.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent subject coverage without being too technical........1999-01-01

Just the book I was looking for. After collecting and growing hostas for some years now, Diana Genfell's book zeroed in on the questions I still had. It's a perfect companion to Paul Aden's hosta book, but if I had to own just one--this book would be it.

1 out of 5 stars This is gardening with Allen Armitage Hosta CD ROM.......2003-01-13

I was diapointed with the CD.There was to much show and not enough coverage of the Hostas. I feel I wasted my money. I can go to the Hosta Library on line and see a greater selection of Hosta. Also you can print pictures from the Hosta library. I wish I didnt buy this CD.
