Book Description

Understanding the flowering plants of any region begins with the recognition of families. This remarkable volume, created to serve students, professionals, and other plant enthusiasts, covers 130 temperate to tropical families common in North America with detailed illustrations and modern referenced commentaries. Each family discussion includes a diagnosis and summary of characteristics, distribution data, important economic members, and pollination ecology. The book's most striking feature is Zomlefer's 158 original pen-and-ink plates depicting intricate dissections of 312 species.

The content of the family discussions is geared to readers who have completed one introductory biology course. For readers less familiar with botanical terminology, Zomlefer provides an illustrated glossary of 551 terms with more than 300 drawings. Other important tutorial features are twenty-two detailed charts that compare pertinent characteristics of certain related plant groups and a general chart that summarizes the salient features of the families covered in the text. Both amateurs and professionals will particularly enjoy the chapter on examining, dissecting, and sketching live material.

5 out of 5 stars Guide to Flowering Plant Families.......2007-01-18

The book is just fine ... that's why I ordered it ... it's a good book.

However, I thought I was buying the book USED at a less-than-new price. The price I actually paid was the new price. And I did receive a new book, thank you.

My question: Why didn't I pay for and receive the USED book that I wanted? I wonder if there is something in the ordering process that I missed. This is the first book order from amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource for a beginner.......2007-01-10

I got this book because I needed to learn about plants and I needed a no nonsense, basic introduction to the plant families of the world--not just trees, not just herbs, and not just information from one part of the world. This book is all that and more. The descriptions of each family use botanical terminology, there are clear line drawings of the taxonomically informative characters, and economically important species are listed in each family. Because I am not an expert on plants, I can't comment on the accuracy of the information, but I can say that this book has been a great resource for me, as a novice botanist. My only complaint (and this is a minor one, because this is not supposed to be a field guide) is that I am unfamiliar with many of the families and color photos would really help me to learn to recognize the plants in nature. I highly recommend this book.

1 out of 5 stars Guide to Flowering Plant Families by Wendy B. Zomlefer [Paperback] .......2005-07-04

This should be a five start rating but something happened when I wrote the review so I can't change the star rating. Suffice it to say that this is a very comprehensive book with wonderful black and white illustrations. A very useful guide for students of botanical art or for anyone interested in plants.

3 out of 5 stars Missing Families.......2005-05-06

Many floras and the USDA Plant Database use Cronquist's classification system. Several families in that system are missing in Thorne's system as used in this book. I would suggest supplementing this book with James Payne Smith's "Vascular Plant Families."

4 out of 5 stars Very handy reference to have around........2005-04-05

Occasionally I have to (try) and key out plants at work. Not having a botany background makes this difficult and when I get stumped on a particular term or piece of plant anatomy I call up this book to walk me through the terminology. It is particularly useful if you can key the plant out to family level. It's picture (line art) illustrations are very clear and help tremendously when trying to understand what it is the key is referring to. Well worth the 35 dollars if you deal with the anatomy of plants at all or need to know family characteristics.

Book Description

In the 20 years that have passed since the publication of the first edition, both Poison Control Centers and Emergency Departments have witnessed an expansion in the number and variety of poisonings caused by toxic plants. At the same time, there is a proliferation in the diversity of plants in our gardens and homes, continually expanding the range of possible consequences from exposure to toxic plants.

This second edition of the Handbook of Poisonous and Injurious Plants is created to assist the clinician in the initial response to the needs of a child or adult exposed to a poisonous or injurious plant. It lists common plants that might lead to the development of the symptom complex and describes the mechanisms of action of the implicated toxin, additional clinical manifestations, and specific therapeutics for each presentation. It has methodically enhanced the previous edition’s botanical rigor with insights from both pharmacognosy and clinical medicine to make it a truly comprehensive source.

With its thorough references and full-color photos of hundreds of potentially toxic and injurious plants inside the home, anyone who has an interest in plants will find this book useful outside in the garden or out in the wild.

This book will fascinate botanists, horticulturists, and naturalists as well as hikers, gardeners, and all those who simply enjoy the wonders of nature and the great outdoors!

With Foreword by Lewis R. Goldfrank, MD and Introduction by Andrew Weil, MD

3 out of 5 stars book of poison.......2007-08-24

Hyped in NYT review. All things are toxic, including apple pits. Well, I would consider that if you chew that en mass. Pictures are a bit small. Good collection of common garden flowers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource .......2007-06-15

This book fills a real void, since the publication of the first edition (in 1985 by Lampe and McCann) has long been out of print. There are over 150 species of plants discussed, detailing the description, location, toxin, toxic parts, clinical findings and management, each with a few key references. The photographs are of very high quality. Often there is more than one photograph of a particular species depicting the plant with and without flowers or perhaps a view from a distance and then a close up. This handbook is essential for all poison centers and toxicologists and would be extremely useful for any healthcare provider, botanist, or gardener who wanted to learn more about poisonous plants!

5 out of 5 stars What I have been waiting for.......2007-04-22

This is the book that I have been waiting to own. As a mother of young children, an avid gardener, an ethnobotanical researcher, a naturalist, and a practicing physician, I think this handbook should be on the bookshelf of every member of these professions. The information provided is practical, insightful, and accurate, and the plant photos add life to a very abstract subject. It is also a beautiful book--in handy field guide proportions with vivid photographs-- this book can go out into the field with you or grace your coffee table. I only wish that it had been published 10 years ago, because it fills a niche left empty when the AMA stopped publishing their book on poisonous plants. Worth the wait--this book is better.

5 out of 5 stars Best handbook on poisonous plants in 20 years! Replaces the AMA Handbook.......2007-01-24

The rigorous organization and approach to this topic results in a tremendous practical contribution to the clinicians who care for the poisoned patient.
Thre first four sections provide detailed management guidlines and general principles for dealing with the poisoned patient. The 5th section is a beautifuly detailed description of the poisonous plants complete with sharp crisp color photographs, pertinent clinical information, and references.
This book should be in every Emergency Department, Poison Center, and Office that gives advice to children and adults who have come in contact or ingested plants that are potentially toxic.

5 out of 5 stars Gardeners handbook.......2007-01-23

This book is full of surprising facts and information about many plants which are commonly known. This is a great book for anyone interested in gardening.

      1 out of 5 stars SMALL size.......2006-05-04

I ordered this book and returned it due to the extremely ridiculous small size. It is about the size of a CD. I had read this book in the library at the full size and the small size ("Compact edition") doesn't even compare. If you really want this book, get the full size. Otherwise it isn't worth it.

      2 out of 5 stars book SIZE.......2005-03-18

My order just came and was I disappointed. The book is beautiful yet the size is absurd. Measures 5 3/8 by 6 1/4 inches. This is not stated anywhere in the book desription. I just assumed it would be the standard 8 1/2 by 11 inches. I KNEW it wasn't the coffee table size but this size is just not suitable for this type of book. I will be returning it.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Fabulous Book of Flowers!.......2002-07-16

This is one of the best flower books I have ever seen! Richly illustrated, with many details, and glorious color! I am a painter, so these are very important for an illustrated book. A must have for all flower lovers!

      5 out of 5 stars Perfection.......2002-04-26

This book is beauty and knowledge. An absolut treasure!

5 out of 5 stars A simply gorgeous floral art presentation........2002-03-23

Flora straddles the line between being an art book filled with flora pictures and a gardening title packed with details about garden flowers. Both audiences will welcome this lavish presentation but it's the artist who will have a rare opportunity to appreciate the detail and color of floral designs. Full-color, oversized pages of floral art are gorgeous presentations.

          Product Description

The delightful illustrations in The New York Botanical Garden Engagement Calendar for 2007 come from a marvelous two-volume folio by Pierre-Joseph Buchoz (1731-1807), a prolific 18th-century naturalist. Collection Precieuse et Enluminees des Fleurs, les Plus Belles et les Plus Curieuses, qui se Cultivent Tant dans les Jardins de la Chine, que dans ceux de l Europe (A Rare, Illustrated Collection of Flowers, the most Beautiful and the Most Exotic, Grown in the Gardens of China as well as Europe) is a rare and beautiful work and its 200 color plates are quite unusual. Published in Paris in 1776 when interest in chinoiserie was strong, the original illustrations were done by native Chinese artists (unattributed), but the ensuing engravings were hand-colored in Paris, giving them a unique and utterly charming flavor, a distinct mix of East and West. Buchoz was the first in Europe to publish illustrations of Chinese flora and fauna by Chinese artists. Volume one of Collection Precieuse is full of extraordinary set pieces featuring Chinese plants, birds, butterflies, insects, and decorative rock formations. Volume two depicts common European garden plants rendered in a distinctly Asian style. Although Buc hoz never gained the plaudits he sought for his scientific work, the composition and quality of his prints in these two volumes are comparable to the best natural history works of the period and he was ahead of his time in introducing Oriental influences to the Parisian art world. Durable hard covers and a cloth-covered spine conceal a spiral wire binding that allows it to lie flat for easy writing. Its pages are large enough to write appointments and reminders, yet it can still be easily slipped into a bag. A ribbon marker helps keep one's place. Year-at-a-glance calendars for past, present, and future make long-term planning simple to do.

5 out of 5 stars The most beautiful Calendar.......2007-05-20

I purchased this calendar and it is so beautiful. It goes above and beyond, with a cloth cover, superb illustrations of flowers and a pocket in the back for additional papers. Very well thought out. I am going to
buy another one next year. If you buy one, you will not regret it.

          5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Product.......2007-05-13

I purchases the 2007 New York Botanical Garden Engagement Calendar and when it arrived I was disappointed because I thought it was a wall calendar. However, the craftmenship is outstanding and I love it. Indeed, I plan to order this type of calendar yearly.

          5 out of 5 stars straight-up beautiful.......2007-01-14

When I ordered this, I was expecting to get a standard engagement calendar -- spiral-bound, cardboard cover, that sort of thing. This is, instead, the most spectacular calendar I have ever seen. (I know that just sounded sarcastic, but bear with me.) The cover is fabric-bound and silky, it opens nicely, and the inside illustrations (which I wish you could see on here) are the sort of thing I'd like to hang on my walls.

          Book Description

This widely acclaimed book analyzes the political effects of scientific research as exemplified by one field, economic botany, during one epoch, the nineteenth century, when Great Britain was the world's most powerful nation. Lucile Brockway examines how the British botanic garden network developed and transferred economically important plants to different parts of the world to promote the prosperity of the Empire.

In this classic work, available once again after many years out of print, Brockway examines in detail three cases in which British scientists transferred important crop plants -- cinchona (a source of quinine), rubber and sisal -- to new continents. Weaving together botanical, historical, economic, political and ethnographic findings, the author illuminates the remarkable social role of botany and the entwined relation between science and politics in an imperial era.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book.......2004-09-04

This is an excellent book, very easy to read and covering the colonial economic botany (rubber, quinin, sisal) in a true apealing way.

5 out of 5 stars Best book my mom ever wrote.......1997-07-31

The author was my mother. The book, based on her anthropology thesis, applied anthropological concepts to the sweeping GLOBAL influence and changes of Western colonization using the British empire as the model. Its a ground breaking book, easy and interesting to read (don't mind the implicit occasional politics). "The best part" (that's an inside family joke) is learning about the relationship between colonial expansion, Kew Gardens, rubber plantations, malaria, chinchona (sp?) and Gin and Tonics. I actually typed an early version of this chapter and couldn't have been happier with the content
