2 out of 5 stars More cottages than gardens.......2007-09-19

A lovely book with interesting stories but I was after beach gardens and there are very few. The title is misleading as it is from the magazine by this name.

4 out of 5 stars Hamptons Cottages and Gardens.......2007-09-06

This is a beautiful book which is as entertaining to read as it is to gaze at the pictures! I would have appreciated it more had all the houses featured been in a similar style to the one on the cover. There is quite a large spectrum of different designs. I wished they had presented more photographs of each individual home, but overall there is plenty to feast your eyes on.

5 out of 5 stars Hampton Havens Review.......2006-08-27

The book was purchased for an anniversary gift for my daughter who resides on one of the Hamptons. She liked the book and even was familiar with the owner of the garden on the cover.

Book Description

Illustrations galore, plans, plants, and expert advice for creating dream gardens.

There’s no garden more evocative than a cottage garden, and no experts more knowledgeable about how to devise the perfect design than leading horticulture authority Toby Musgrave and the editors at Country Living. Musgrave reveals, with the help of outstanding images by award-winning photographer Jerry Harpur, that cottage gardening actually encompasses a wide range of approaches. Almost any gardener will find the answer to his or her dreams, whether it’s a sweetly scented romantic garden, complete with a gentle fountain and secluded bower, or one that’s formal with tightly clipped yews and precise plantings. Eight designs focus on particular themes and climates, and all include a detailed plan and plant list, making it easy to re-create or adapt Toby Musgrave’s beautiful arrangements.

4 out of 5 stars Cottage Gardens Review.......2005-01-22

When Country Living puts its name on a book, it is usually chock full of pretty pictures. The new book Cottage Gardens by Toby Musgrave is no exception. Anyone who isn't sure exactly what they want in a garden, but leans toward an informal style, will enjoy flipping through the book for ideas. Also, the garden plans are nicely done. The book is well written, but it is hard to write yet another book on cottage style gardens and come up with much new and exciting information.

One of the things I liked most about Cottage Gardens is the way it is laid out. The first section discusses "designing by theme." It goes into a bit of history for each type of garden and talks about how to achieve each look. In this section, you will find traditional, tapestry, potager, romantic, rural, formal, painterly and modern garden pictures and plans. The "designing by use" section covers aromatic, wildlife, herbal, harvest, cut flower, all year round, easy care, and dry gardens. Again, there are many photos and there is a design for each type of garden. Finally, there is a "plants for cottage gardens" section. Frankly, I was not impressed with this section, as it is quite small and has few photos.

If you are a new gardener who enjoys the cottage garden style, the book is definitely worth a look, but advanced gardeners will probably be a bit disappointed.

    Book Description

For gardeners who love the riot of shapes, colors, and textures to be found in the cottage garden, Stephen Westcott-Gratton's Creating a Cottage Garden in North America offers a rich mix of history, practical advice for starting one, design tips, and plant profiles--especially of those native to our continent. Although this cozy style of garden originated in England among peasants who need pretty practicality--it fed livestock and it also satisfied the need for the beauty of flowers--it has much to offer the modern American gardener. Traditional English cottage gardens had about the same amount of garden space as do modern homes in many urban centers. Applying the wisdom of a garden style in which plants--whether flowers, herbs, fruits, or vegetables-- are packed densely together makes perfect sense for the gardener with only a postage- stamp yard.

1 out of 5 stars I can't believe the high ratings this book received!.......2006-04-12

The titled of this book should be "Creating a Cottage Garden in North America unless you live in the south. If you live in the south, this book is usless to you." If it were titled that, I would have saved my money. What a disappointment. The are few pictures and the narrative is really boring. If you live in zones 3-4, you may find some vage (very vague) interest in this book but there are so many better books out there. I bought the book based on the recommendations on Amazon. I hope you save your money or review this book at the book store before spending your hard earned money on it.

    4 out of 5 stars Nice book.......2002-12-28

I do like this book and I'll probably refer to it often but I'm not quite as enthusiastic about it as the other reviewers. The history was very interesting but because there was so much of it, there wasn't as much coverage of suitable plants as other books. On the plus side of that, the author also didn't go into "information overload" and provide umteen-zillion varieties of every possible rose that could be planted. He did discuss some rarely used plants that I definitely want in my garden and he knows how to grow them, too, which is a plus. He also included some recipes for some of the unusual vegetables. And the pictures are wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Anyone can make a Cottage Garden.......2001-03-23

Stephen Westcott-Gratton has written a 'hit the nail on the head' how to book on putting in a Cottage Garden. It is obvious he is both gardener and writer because his advice is methodical and his suggestions very workable.

He dispels the myth that English Cottage Gardens need to be contrived, reinforces the necessity for tight plantings and encourages the experimentation of different plants which provide the fun and color for this kind of garden.

This book covers the history of the Cottage Garden and some of the plants traditionally used. It is both an enjoyable read and an informative tome for taking your small spot and turning it into a riot of color and a haven for life of all kinds.

The plant selections are typical of someone who gardens in Canada, but that does not diminish the how to information the book provides.

Plus, Mr. Westcott-Gratton definitely leans to the organic and that is dear to our hearts.

5 out of 5 stars A book which provided both validation & inspiration for me.......2000-06-19

For those of us who like the cottage garden look and live in North America, this is a valuable book. Written in a style laced with humor, it debunks myths and inspires an adventurous approach. It is full of detailed information about how to create the cottage garden look and includes a well organized glossary of specific plants which lend themselves to an easy approach to this style. It also includes a palatable dollop of horticultural history, well written and not overwhelming for those more interested in today! Good enough that I decided I must own it!

I loved this book, and keep going back to it again and again, for comfy and yet clean looks for a more modern interpretation of cottage. I'm not that much into white, and like a spare but not modern look, and this book had enough examples of ways to do that to be really helpful. yarrow_m

I truely enjoy this book. The photography and ideas are very current and create a mix of style, comfort & ideas I personally delight in. However, I was so disappointed there was no resource guide...at all. :(
I have spent days trying resource the botanical prints and have come up empty.
    oh, well.

    3 out of 5 stars Just ok.......2006-05-18

Not my favorite cottage book, and I own many. There was just nothing special about it. It didn't inspire me as I had expected. I didn't enjoy the reading - didn't hold my interest. It does have some nice pictures.

2 out of 5 stars Sorry to say............2006-02-25

This was just an O.K. book. I love decorating books, this is my least favorite. Usually decorating books inspire me and I can't put them down or at least have to fill the book with post-it notes to mark great ideas. This book I looked at,once maybe twice... it didn't give me the inspiration to do anything. Pictuers are nice... but the context, the way its split up ,then and now is just boring . There are much better books on cottage decor out there. just have to say sorry but not my fav.

5 out of 5 stars This is a Beautiful Book.......2005-08-13

Finally, a Cottage Decor book with pure class. I rarely leave reviews but felt a overwhelming need to share my thoughts. My first thought just looking at the pictures, WOW! This book is packed with many inspirational ideas that is very doable for anyone interested in creating a home in beautifully updated Cottage Style. If you like Cottage home style, this book will give you a fresh new approach to all types of Cottage Decorating. As a Interior Decorator, I highly recommend that you get this book. Book Description

Thanks to the extraordinary photographs and gardening wisdom in this classic book, the elegant intimacy of the English cottage garden is a practical possibility for amateur gardeners in diverse regions of the United States. The author has analyzed the aesthetic and horticultural elements in ten representative cottage gardens--eight in England and two in the United States. Her spectacular photographs render the look and atmosphere of these gardens, while her text focuses on easily grown, readily available plants that are adaptable to a wide variety of climatic and soil conditions. In the back of the book--completely updated for this new edition--may be found specific horticultural information on a wide variety of cottage garden plants commonly available in the United States, glossaries of Latin and common names, and a list of sources for old rose varieties. The gardens in this beautiful book are not those of the great estates of England, manicured by staffs of professional gardeners. They are, instead, labors of love on the part of individual homeowners, many of whom started with bleak, rubble-strewn lots and went on to create the enchanted settings pictured here.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great for the pictures.......2007-08-15

But of little use if you're a novice looking for more of a "how-to" guide with practical advice on what flowers, etc. to plant and when. It got to the point I hardly read the text by the end.

1 out of 5 stars Will not teach you how to create a cottage garden.......2007-01-29

Beautiful pictures, impenetrably dense text. I got this because of all the great reviews, but I have to disagree with them. I was expecting "how to create a cottage garden," but this is more like "two dozen cottage gardens and the two million plants that are in them." It was information overload, and yet not very informative. I was very disappointed. I returned this and got _Cottage Garden_ by Elisabeth Arter, which was much cheaper and much more what I was looking for.

    2 out of 5 stars Huge disappointment.......2006-12-21

This book is full of lovely photographs of English cottage gardens but I found it to be of no use to me as a gardener in the United States. The so-called layout plans are just rough sketches with no labeling of plants. The growing guidelines and plant lists are standard--nothing new there. I enjoyed looking at photos of Tasha Tudor's gardens but I think this book is a waste of money.

    5 out of 5 stars USEFUL RESOURCE.......2006-11-10

A great guide on creating a cottage garden for those new to gardening.

4 out of 5 stars Useful, although I do not live in North America!.......2006-11-10

I just love english gardens. That is why i bought this book, thinking that I would just have a great time looking at the photos, but I must say, it has been a great tool when working on my "english garden to be". As I don't live North America, I turn aroung the seasons and I'm ok!

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!.......2006-05-15

I am stunned to see some bad reviews for this book! I came across it accidentally at the library and intend to buy it soon. It is certainly not a "garden book" in the sense of what to plant where. What it is is an extraordinary history of grandmothers' gardens and accompanying art, culture, and values. I love cottage gardening, history, the Arts and Crafts movement, Gertrude Jekyll, etc. and this book is about many of these things. I've also learned through it of many interesting books and writers and plan to research them. Highly recommended. Well written too.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-11-25

I was really disappointed in this book - it's more of an art history book than a gardening book, and it's a history of some fairly insignificant art at that (with some exceptions). I found the text to just be a list of artwork. It was extremely uninformative. Even the illustrations weren't all that attractive, since so many were in black and white.

4 out of 5 stars Seeing the garden through an artist's eyes.......2003-02-10

I'd borrowed this book from the library and I had to go out and buy it! If you are a painter and love the era of early American Impressionism, you'll love this book because it shows you the paintings and it shows you the actual gardens that inspired them. I see gardens as potential painting subjects - especially the "cottage gardens" or "grandmother's gardens" - that were so inspiring to the artists of the late 1800s. If you don't paint, you probably won't get the point of this book.

    1 out of 5 stars A disappointing work.......2001-08-01

I waited and waited to afford to buy this book. It's on its way back to Amazon. What a disappointment..short superficial chapters and useless pictures. I suspect you'll see this book on remainder tables everywhere ...very soon.

2 out of 5 stars More like History of Gardening.......2001-07-22

I was disappointed. It was more a history of gardens than anything else. They described historic gardens in cursory detail. Yes, it's a pretty book but most of the photos are in black & white because these gardens are the real thing (i.e. from the turn of the century), the color photos are of artwork. If you're looking for inspiration or how-to's, bypass this one.

Cottage gardens are popular in North America for their abundant informality, but British gardener Christopher Lloyd reminds us that a working cottage garden isn't all hollyhocks and lamb's ears. In its Old World origins, it served many purposes: as vegetable patch, cutting garden, and a place to sit in the cool of the evening. "It has evolved through common sense, combines need with enjoyment and is entirely unpretentious." The Cottage Garden, by Lloyd and photographer Richard Bird, is an homage to this centuries-old style that allows a multitude of plants to flourish in a small space, with a minimum, if crucial, amount of control exerted by the gardener.

Lloyd's introduction is a brisk examination of the cottage garden tradition, after which he describes a large number of cottage garden plants. Happily for North American gardeners, these include plants that are commonly found outside of Great Britain as well as those that have been in the English cottage garden for centuries. A chapter on cottage garden features addresses hedges, waterways and ponds, garden furnishings, and outbuildings. The book's final two chapters are "Planning the Cottage Garden," with several different layouts emphasizing different types of plants, and "The Working Cottage Garden," which offers details for tending the garden through the seasons and using its produce. Some of these seem rather deliberately quaint, such as the recipes for parsnip wine, mead, and pickled eggs. But overall, Richard Bird's serenely intimate photography and Lloyd's affable, opinionated erudition make The Cottage Garden a book to linger over. It's a pleasant addition to the lush DK Living series, which includes other notable gardening titles, such as Anna Pavord's The New Kitchen Garden and Pippa Greenwood's The New Gardener. --Barrie Trinkle

5 out of 5 stars Full of Details.......2001-01-23

This book covers many topics related to the traditional English cottage garden without alienating the modern gardener. There are a great many color photographs which include overall garden shots and pictures of individual traditional cottage garden favorites, many of which are easily available in the U.S. There are also many color drawings with various cottage garden designs (aerial views) including the traditional cottage garden with primarily vegetables, a garden with fruits and vegetables and flowers, and flowers only and flowers and vines.

The book is well organized and is both charming and useful. If you are very visual you won't be disappointed with the combination of pictures and drawings.

The end of the book contains information on what garden tasks can and should be completed during the four seasons, and how to accomplish them, including a brief section on pruning. There is also a section included in this part of the book which gives traditional recipes and ideas about how to use the bounty from your garden, including dandelion wine, and mead. This book is a good read and there is plenty to return to again and again.

    4 out of 5 stars Sacred Gardens............2000-12-31

THE ENGLISH FLOWER GARDEN by William Robinson, was first published in 1883 and republished a number of times afterward. The current version available from Amazon is a reprint of the 15th Edition Robinson edited shortly before he died in the 1930s. This new reprint of the 15th Edition contains the "Botanical Revisions" prepared by Graham Stuart Thomas for the 1984 Edition, as well as a Forward by Henry Mitchell, and an introduction by Deborah Nevins.

The book is set in old style type and contains numerous black and white illustrations--etchings of photos and prints of sketches. Some of them are a bit grainy, but many are not, and even the grainy ones have their good points. The content of each photo is quite interesting, and the sketches provide the "personal" touch one seldom sees in text books these days.

In one print, taken at Gravetye Manor over 100 years ago, a climbing tea rose clings to a bamboo split-rail post fence surrounded by bush roses. The sunlight reflects from the walkway and warms the flowers and a huge clay pot sitting in a corner. In another photo, pots of 'Chimney Campanula' guard an old Jacobin chest sitting in a hall at Staunton Court. Sketches and photos are used to illustrate flowers all through the last half of the book--a flower dictionary with anectdotal and literary "blurbs" written by Robinson himself.

Mitchell says Robinson "for all practical purposes invented gardening as we know it." Robinson's garden, 'Gravetye Manor' is a hop, skip and a jump from Sissinghurst, but few know of it's existence. Yet, Robinson is the "grandfather" of Sissinghurst, because Gertrude Jekyll who helped Mrs. Nichols design Sissinghurst, was Robinson's disciple. She literally followed in his footsteps and emulated his style.

Robinson found most of the gardens of his day deplorable (19th Century Victorian). Those of the wealthy were modeled after the French and Italian formal plan, loaded with clipped Yews and bedded out every spring with ribbons of color provided by geraniums and marigolds. The walkways were lined with ornate scupture and surrounded by towering "imprisoned" evergreen shrubs and trees including clipped Yews which he loathed. He said these gardens reminded him of graveyards.

His ideal was the cottage garden. He considered the garden a sacred space. He said one had to visit the houses of the poor to find truly beautiful gardens. Henry Mitchell reflecting on this says, "The thing that separates the true gardener from the mere architect or designer (and there is something extremely suspicious in the airs they give themselves nowadays) is that the gardener stands in awe before his violets, while others think of them in terms of [sic] plant materials."

Robinson's ideas grew out of the Romantic movement of the late 18th and early 19th Century. His designs and thinking were reflected in the Arts and Crafts movement based on the importance of reconnecting to nature. His contemporaries in thinking were Ruskin, Morris, Stickly, Frank Lloyd Wright, and others we identify with this movement. If you're a Stickly, cantilevered, picturesque kind of person, you'll like this book.
