2 out of 5 stars Not very useful for anyone........2004-04-26

I recently purchased this book, along with several others, to help me with a backyard landscaping project involving a flagstone patio, walkways, and low retaining walls. I found this to be the least useful of the lot. It is neither a good how-to book nor a source of inspiration and ideas. It covers far too many different techniques, from stepping stones to pavers to bricks to concrete to flagstones, all of them at a fairly superficial level. It had very little on using flagstones, which is primarily what I wanted information on. Furthermore, some of the excavating and edging techniques recommended seemed at odds with what I had read elsewhere.

The book had some pictures of completed projects, but they were for the most part pedestrian and had little or no explanation of the design principles demonstrated in them. For a more comprehensive look at the topic, I would suggest "Start-to Finish Patios" from Ortho Books. It is much longer and covers both ideas and suggestions and building techniques much more comprehensively. It even goes into lighting and pergolas.

5 out of 5 stars Such a pedestrian name for such a lovely book.......2004-07-22

This is a simply stunning book. Not only does Colborn discuss various garden floor options, but he provides lucid, approachable philosophy of garden design. You'll find yourself looking at the many pictures not only for groundcover options, but also for ideas that make your garden sing.

5 out of 5 stars This is the one!.......2000-10-31

My bookshelves are full of gardening books with lots of beautiful photographs but little usable information - unless of course you can take 3 months off your job as a finishing carpenter, or your landscaping efforts consist of hitting the speed-dial button for your favorite Master Gardener. Otherwise, you might as well be satisfied for your landscaping to look like everyone else's. "The Garden Floor", though, offers refreshing design ideas for formal, Japanese, cottage-y, contemporary & woodsy gardens, involving a range of materials from your basic grass & concrete to scree, recycled materials, many kinds of stone & wood, brickwork, plant materials, even glass beads. For the not-so-design-oriented reader, the author covers designing your garden to look appropriate to the style of your home. The suitability and maintenance required for a vast array of materials is covered frankly, including the best information I have found in my search for lawn replacement plants. As the title says, the focus of the book is at ground level, but both the photos and the text give enough information & advice on adjacent plant materials (and alternatives) that the less experienced gardener won't feel unprepared to recreate the look in their own backyard. Instructions for the DIYer are thorough & include sketches, but thankfully don't take over the book. The end product: a book for the novice or advanced gardener, that is beautiful enough to buy for the photos and thorough enough to convince my husband I bought him a DIY book to save money!

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not bad at all.......2004-12-02

I started reading the Dancing Floor with no expectations, after finding it in a second hand book store. It was much better than I expected, though there were certain annoying parts of the book.

I found the story to be very interesting and entirely unique. The setting was beautifully described. There were many references to art, and garden history which were quite interesting - though sometimes pointless. The main female protagonist, Heather, is not your usual run of the mill herroine. Heather loved to eat, was confident (to the point of being rude), and definitely had her bad points as well as her good (like any normal human being).

The story seemed to go downhill in the last quarter. I felt that it was a hurried finish, and a bit of an anticlimax. The name of the book is a part mentioned slightly, and is not really relevant to the story, so a strange name for the book. The big 'mystery' which at the end is revealed, is not as dramatic as it could have been.

All this aside, I sometimes found Michael's writing style to be quite tedious. There were sections that were very annoying to read , for example in a tense, action packed scene Michael's would write conversations in a style that did not capture the mood ie. "Oh no! It's" Heather exclaimed while thinking of how lovely Lindsay looked in her new sweater "hard to believe you saw him!". That quote was made up, but her style is simlar. As you can see, it's easy to forget the first part of the sentence and have to re-read it in order for it to make sense. Confusing?

There are also references to 'She', 'He', 'Her', 'Him' and often I had no idea who she was talking about.

Overall, The Dancing Floor is certainly entertaining - and I would recommend it to anyone looking for an unusual setting, original set of characters with quirky conversations, and mildly mysterious plot.

    5 out of 5 stars Not Bad.......2004-06-01

I have to admit I read this book five times. Now I am just waiting for it to come in stock in the nearest bookstore.
The story and plot is good if you are into mystery which I certainly am. What made me pick up and read this book for the 1st time was not only the title but the cover because the cover itself says that this book is a mystery. For those of you that are a Barbara Micheal's reader and have not read this book. Read it.

    4 out of 5 stars Realistic heroine.......2003-06-25

    Heroine: husky

American school teacher Heather Tradescant has journeyed to merry Olde England on a trip that is anything but merry. She is living out her father's last wishes and visiting the famous ancient gardens as they had once dreamed of doing together.

Heather particularly desires to see the seventeenth century garden of one Troyton House, but is denied access by the owner. Determined to at least get a glimpse of the fabled grounds, she gives in to impulse and trespasses on the property, blundering her way through a monstrous prickly hedge that does far more damage to her than she does to it.

Arriving on the far side of the vegetation Heather is left with a deep-seated sense of uneasiness extending far beyond that of merely breaking the law. She senses that perhaps God's own laws are somehow being broken at Troyton House, but by who or what she does not know--and is desperately afraid she will find out.

    What worked for me:

I give Heather big points for being a teacher, and a lover of gardening, traditional Regency romance novels, and chocolate!

I enjoyed the fact that the story was steeped in the lore of several cultures. I wish it gone into even further detail in some cases, it was so interesting.

Size-wise Heather describes herself as being big-boned but flat-chested. But it didn't seem to lessen her appeal to the other gender, as she had four men interested in her at one time or another.

    What didn't work for me:

Reading this story felt like mentally traversing a maze with its twists, turns, and false leads. And yet, it wasn't that highly suspenseful for me. I think I went into it expecting something shocking, like a "Blair Witch" meets contemporary gothic romance sort of hybrid, and when I didn't get that kind of intense, high-speed action I found it to be a bit draggy.

    Overall:

"The Dancing Floor" didn't quite have the zing the back cover blurb really promised. Still, it's definitely worth the searching out at the library if you are a fan of witches and/or gardening.

Warning: There are several mentions of the occult in this novel and don't expect many mentions of floors, dancing or otherwise in this oddly-named story.

If you liked "The Dancing Floor" you might also enjoy "Thornyhold".

3 out of 5 stars Not so spellbinding.......2003-02-23

The title of the book is very misleading. Besides the fact that you can't really tell if it means "floor that dances" or "floor on which to dance" the term doesn't appear more than a few times in the whole book and it doesn't have anything to do with the plot or the outcome of the book. Between p.175 and p.345 is seems to have been completely forgotten and unmentioned. The author has key characters react strongly to the mention of the term "dancing floor" but it is another ploy to keep up your interest, because in the end it isn't even pertinent.

Ms. Michaels shows off her knowledge of the history of witches, witch trials, witch craft and 16th and 17th century English landscape history. it's as if Ms. Michaels had all this good information about witch lore and historical gardens she wanted to use and had to invent a lame plot to tie it all together. It is slightly entertaining because you think it is leading up to something really "mysterious." She is also adept at the "red herring" technique of emphasizing certain elements or characters to throw you off-track, but it's pretty obvious.

The "heroine" is referred to as a "spinster school teacher" although she is only 25 years old and while still single, not virginal. The author gets "into her head" by providing parenthetical exlanations and thoughts that are distracting to the storyline. More than once this character compares herself to the main character in a suspense-romance novel, which she actually is. This heroine describes herself as overweight, not pretty, man-ish in her actions, and yet she has four men showering attention on her. You will be surprised at which one she ends up with, however.

There's even the local town "good" witch. The end of the story is too unbelievable... I stayed up late to finish it and was thoroughly disappointed. If you'd like to read a good mystery containing witchcraft, try the Three Sisters Trilogy by Nora Roberts.

"Distinctive House Design and Decor of the Twenties: With Over 500 Floor Plans and Illustrations," edited by Richardson Wright, is yet another in Dover's superb series of architectural reprints. The bibliographic note on this book's copyright page states that it "is an unabridged republication of the work originally published by the Conde Nast Publications, Inc., New York in 1925 under the title _House & Garden's Second Book of Houses_."

This volume is full of great visual material: floor plans, elevation drawings, drawings and photos of interior furnishings, drawings of landscaping ideas, and photos of actual houses and architectural details. The book also contains a lot of text. The articles include "Hints for Builders and Buyers," "How to Build a Smokeless Fireplace," "Facts about Paints, Stains and Varnish," and more.

Many different architectural styles are represented: Georgian, Spanish, Tudor, French, bungalow, Dutch colonial. The photos, drawings, and floor plans are full of fascinating details: brickwork, molding styles, bay windows, dormers, wrought iron balconies, fireplaces, chimneys, and more. If you are interested in period home architecture, don't miss this great book. Thanks again, Dover!

This was a great investment that helped me get the best quality at the lowest price. Thanks to this book, I was more knowledgeable than most carpet salesmen. They'll tell you anything to make a sell. Be armed with the best information before you make a large purchase such as carpet.

4 out of 5 stars A Quick and Helpful Read.......2004-05-20

Helpful information is provided which certainly makes the book worth the cost. However, it is short and should be combined into one book with another book by the author, "The Quick and Easy Guide to Carpet Shopping."

One tip that seems to have worked well for us is to get estimates on a specific brand and style of carpet. That way the sellers are forced to deal against each other simply on terms of price.

5 out of 5 stars More information than expected.......2003-09-25

I recently purchased this book, and saved 425 dollars on carpet for my rental. If I saved this much on every rental, I could take a vacation!! Anyway, there really wasn't a question that I had that wasn't answered by this book. I heartily recommend this to anyone who is going to buy carpet.

1 out of 5 stars Perhaps better information elsewhere?.......2003-09-20

I did not like this book because: It was too short. It was only 60 pages. 60 pages of paper stapled in the center. The information could be helpful to some If they had never read anything anywhere else ever about carpeting. I didn't feel like this "book" was worth the money. I think there might be more informative resources at a more economical value for the carpet buying consumer.

5 out of 5 stars A very useful and informative guide........2002-10-28

Before I read this book I was confused and did not know enough about carpet to know whether or not I was going about it in the right way. The stores I visited were not much help either, and in fact, they made me even more confused. I did an internet search hoping to gain a better understanding about selecting a carpet that would last, and that's where I found the authors website and about his carpet buying guide. I am glad that I ordered it, his book seems to be fairly complete, and it goes in depth about carpet scams and how retailers can overcharge. It has also helped me understand how this whole carpet buying process works. I have now gained the confidence to know what type of carpet I want and how to go about getting it without the fear of being taken advantage of. It has been quite a learning experience for me and I would recommend this book to people planning on buying carpet.
