Texas Gardening.......2007-07-22
This is a great book. I had a very old book and this is an update.
Wonderful Source! .......2007-06-06
Guess my brother got tired of all my ?? so he got me this book!!
I absolutely LOVE it & recommend it!
It is filled with Texas-specifics from Trees-Shrubs-etc including great info & very nice, helpful descriptions!
I've been looking for trees & very impressed. Gives proper & common name(s), great descriptions, & really like that it gives a close-up drawing of leaf-pattern/shape & there seems to be a picture of EVERYTHING!!
This is a great one to find what/how to plant & care for Texan stuff!
A Must-Have!.......2007-05-24
I call it my "Garden Bible." My mom had the first edition, which I read when I was just a kid. Now that I'm all grown up, I still use this book! Very informative, very easy to read, great illustrations. Overall a wonderful gardening book for Texas. Texas aint easy gardening, but Neil Sperry makes it so.
Neil Sperry's Complete Guide to Texas Gardening .......2007-01-17
I have wanted this book for a very long time, and so I've have built up a lot of expectation and this book does not dissappoint. It was a little different than I expected, but in a good way. I expected a book that taught about various plants that grow well in Texas. It is that and more. This book is ALL about gardening in Texas. How to treat you soil, how to compost, how to plan a landscape, and more. It will answer just about any question you have.
Texas Made EASY.......2006-11-03
Neil Sperry definately knows what he's talking about in regards to what will/will not grow in Texas. As a recent homeowner, I needed all the help I could get. So far, all of my plants have made it two years and I've lived here for two years.
Awesome resource!
Book Description
Gardening is now the favorite outdoor leisure activity in America. Homeowners realize the health benefits available from gardening and the potential increase in their home's property value.
Regional gardening titles offer the most useful advice because they provide credible information on the plants that perform best in specific states. Gardeners want information they can trust and use successfully in their own gardens.
The Texas Gardening Guide is converted to a full-color edition with updated plants and the latest information on Texas gardening trends. It is revised by Dale Groom, the popular author and co-author of two other Cool Springs Press titles on gardening in Texas.
Customer Reviews:
repetitous.......2006-07-08
Too much repetition. For each entry: If you have problems, your local plant dealer can give you advice. Well, often the advice you get is not accurate. Lots of references to what his granny grew. It's great he loved his granny, but that is folksy and not useful information. Ignores the problems with periwinkle and red tip photinia diseases.
Pictures are very good. Book is well organized. Bibliography leaves out some important other books by competing radio call-in hosts.
I get the impression that Mr. Groom is a nice, well-intentioned man, but this is not a definitive work on Texas decorative gardening.
Great Color, maybe not enough variety.......2006-06-27
I purchased this book after wanting to revamp my lawn. Each page is filled with great detail on each common plant, vine, etc. found in Texas. I found it helpful that it lists the common bugs (if any) that would possibly attack the plant. The book is filled with huge colorful pictures. It is a lot more helpful than the original book Dale Groom has (I have both). I recommend this book to any one who doesn't know a lot about the plants that thrive in the many different areas of Texas.
Although I think this a great book for any Texan, I almost wished there was more variety. I used this in combination with Home Landscaping: Texas (Home Landscaping). Happy Planting!
Great book.......2005-09-21
I really like this very simple to read and understand book. It is great for checking out what plants you want to plant.
Part of a collection..........2005-07-03
As a quick reference this book compliments a gardener's information resource. This one can go with you as you do a "walk through" of a landscape design. Excellent photographs help you visualize your ideas.
Best Book for North Texas.......2005-01-29
I am a professional Horticulturist and love this book! Even though I know my plant material, the ideas and info in this book are very helpful to me in my industry. And it is written so that someone who doesn't know plant material will also learn a lot. It is an easy read and thorough covers each plant. This is the one book that I keep with me for reference all the time. I would call it my Bible for North Texas Plant Material. I have met Dale several times and he is very knowledgable about this industry and what works in North Texas. You can be sure that what he says in this book is the truth.

Great field guide.......2007-09-27
My best friend and I have a great time stopping on the sides of roads to "stalk" Texas wildflowers and the book has been very useful. It has great pictures and descriptions that help us catalog our "discoveries".
Color coding is the key to identifying flowers!.......2007-08-01
This book contains excellent photographs and is organized by flower colors for easy reference. It's small size is also a plus in the field. I highly recommend this book to my fellow Texans that love wildflowers regardless of their experience, novice to pro. It includes about a tenth of the over 5000 varieties of wildflowers growing in Texas.
Great book!!.......2007-07-25
i LOVE this book. my dad recently got a deer lease in central texas, and i wanted to be able to identify all of the beautiful wildflowers on the land. this book let me identify every single one! it's organized by flower color so it's easy to use, and has nice big full color photos of every flower.
and a major plus for me is that it has medicinal/folk uses for the flowers/plants, if there are any. and it's great for beginners. it has great in-depth descriptions of the flowers (because some of the flowers look the same as others), and if you don't know what the terms are, there's a glossary of terms and illustrations in the back.
with this book, you'll be an expert in no time!
More than just an identifier.......2006-11-25
I have LOTS of field guides. I take a lot of photos "in the wild," and have a pathological need to identify what's in the picture.
Wildflowers of Texas scores high on several counts:
Color coded entries. While the very best field guide format I've encountered is the Audubon guides, which not only sort entries by color, but also shape, etc. (taxonomic form?), I've found most guides out there sort the flowers by family. True, I'm getting good enough to know a mallow from an aster -- but, really, if I knew what the flower is, why need a guide? So, as far as the Texas specific guides I've encountered go, this one is the first I reach for, because of that first level sort.
The other reason I rate it highly, and reach for it often, are Ajilvsgi's notes about the flower and plant: how it got its name, how it was used historically, and other interesting bits. Being a collector of eclectica, this falls right into my psyche.
The pictures are also very clear and helpful. True, you wander into the yet another yellow composite section and identification gets iffy in a hurry, especially from a picture. But the AYCs give even the pros problems, so I don't feel TOO badly.
Highly recommended (in fact, THIS one was purchased as a gift for a flower-savvy friend of mine). That's pretty high praise, that I would buy it to give away, eh?
Wildflowers Review.......2006-02-18
Good read, excellent pics, is recommended for 7th and 8th grade Science classes. Good price, excellent value!

Much-Needed Photographs of Rapidly Disappearing Plants.......1999-09-07
A must-have for every library in south Texas. This well-organized book fills a large gap in reference material about vegetation which remains undisturbed on less than 95% of south Texas' landmass. Placement of photos and construction of keys make this an excellent introductory text for students of botany. It's the first volume I can recommend to junior-high and high school teachers as a "user-friendly" approach to keying south Texas herbs. Lots of south Texas plants remain unmentioned here, however. Let us not assume that they are nonnative or without "use to livestock and wildlife."
Book Description
This book shows you how to have a healthy soil and recommends environmentally safe products and even some homemade remedies to control pests and disease in your garden. You'll get nuts and bolts information on companion planting and the use of beneficial insects.
Customer Reviews:
Extension Agent information only.......2007-01-10
This book is nothing more than a compilation of information that can be had for free from the county extension agents. I found nothing new in it. Your time would be better spent talking to the county agent and getting specific information for you county, as it would be easier to find that way, than in this book.
Best Texas vege gardening book!.......2004-07-25
This book has been indispensable to me!!! This book, along with The Vegetable Gardener's Bible, have been my "text books" in starting a garden. Without them, I wouldn't have such a great garden. These books take the guess work out of what to do. Thanks Mr. Garrett and Mr Beck!!!
Great Book On Organic Gardening.......2000-02-28
Howard covers the essentials of Basic Organic Gardening as well as the how to's. I bought the book at Rohde's for about the same price before shipping. If you can't get to Garland; but it here. We just completed our 20'x20' raised bed garden. Our front yard is the lushest greenest yard in the neighborhood with NO CHEMICALS. We have been a fan of Howard for a few years now.

A Great Help!.......2006-07-11
This book is incredibly useful. It tells you everything you need to know and is well illustrated. It shows a close up of the plant and a view of the entire plant. But the best thing is that the pages are split three ways according to the plant's height. So you can mix and match pages to see how different height plants work together. It also has all the information about plants, sun, water, propagation, etc. I recommend this book highly to anyone landscaping in Texas and many of the plants work in other states as well.
Unique, creative, and fun.......2004-02-10
High marks for creativity, uniqueness and just plain fun. The book is spiral bound so it will lay flat. This makes it easy to use. More importantly each page has been divided horizontally into three independent sections. The flowers on the top section of the divided page are tall with a height range of 3-6 foot. The flowers in the middle section of the divided page are in the medium height range of 1-3 feet. The flowers on the bottom third of the divided page are of a low height ranging from 1 inch to 1 foot. So by choosing different top, middle and bottom sections you can get an idea of how the staggered heights of the flowers in your bed would appear simultaneously. By flipping back and forth between different choices for the top, middle, and bottom sections (which move independently of one another because of the division into three seperate sections) you can compare various color, height, and texture combinations. Alternatively use it to compare flowers that bloom in the cool season, those that bloom in the warm season, and those that bloom year round and get an idea of how your bed will appear over time as the seasons change.
There are 138 tall, 138 medium and 138 short flowering plants illustrated. Happily this is unique entries, that is, there is not 20 separate entries for tulips. So you are being introduced to many lesser-known varieties of flowering plants for Texas.
The general information is printed on a soothing happy shade of yellow paper. The wording is informative without being dry.
I am not awarding 5 stars for two reasons. First the illustrations are hand painted. While it is great that there is a close up of the bloom, as well as an illustration of the entire plant, this is not as informative as an actual photograph. Secondly because of the split page structure there is only a single paragraph for each plant listing. This leaves out some important information, such as pest problems (I see that disease problems are mentioned.)
I recommend this book for its fun factor. It would make a great gift for any Texas gardener. Give it a try!
The Texas Flowerscaper.......2001-03-19
I have lived in Texas for 15 years, this is a must have selection for your garden. The Texas flowerscaper gives you great references as well as care for each plant. Also many tips about which plants need alot of water for each region. Excellent book!!
Book Description
Plant growers of all kinds are turning to organic products and procedures for vigorous, healthy plants. Since 1988, J. Howard Garrett has been in the forefront of the organic gardening movement, dispensing well-tested advice through "The Natural Way," his radio program and column in the Dallas Morning News. In this expert guide, he offers a complete program for organic gardening. After an opening chapter on the basics of organics, he covers soil management, fertilization and composting, pest control (even fire ants and mosquitoes), landscaping (including tree care, wildflowers, and lawn care), food crops, and wildlife (attracting helpful animals and repelling harmful ones). With this information, professional and home gardeners alike can learn how to eliminate their chemical dependency and grow plants "the natural way." Let The Dirt Doctor's Guide to Organic Gardening be your one-stop source for cost-effective, earth-friendly, complete, and easy-to-understand gardening information.

Great information.......2006-02-21
I am in our state Master Gardener program, and the advice is to go organic. You can read contradictory advice out there on the best way to grow crops, flowers, healthy lawns and trees. So far this is the book I've found that clears up the contradictions I've heard and read about and tells you why.
I'm reading a library copy, but just ordered a copy for personal use. I'm sure it will come in handy.
The only way to grow!.......2002-11-03
This book is extremely informative, both for the beginning gardener as well as the more experienced. Contains basic planting techniques, how to begin gardening the organic way, (not as daunting or expensive as you might think!) and maintaining your new masterpiece. Disease and pest control, (MANY bugs are beneficial!!) building healthy soil, (which in turns builds healthy plants,) soil and water management, etc. Written in clear, easy-to-understand language, this is the first book I would recommend to anyone with an interest in gardening, or someone looking for a better, safer way to care for their corner of the planet. If you have children or pets, and a yard, this book is for you! If you enjoy spending time outside relishing your greenspace, this book is for you!

Customer Reviews:
not what I expected.......2006-08-06
It may be useful depending on your needs. It is somewhat brief and more than half of it contains listing of nurseries and garden centers with address and phone numbers. It begins with a brief description of each area and 2 maps. For each area it has a simple list of plants, shrubs etcs which have been selected based on zone, watering needs, soil requirements, sunlight, and design, with a very few pictures, and that is it. There are stars to note plants which are native. All the list contains is name of plant, latin name, and star if native. So I assume you would pick from the list and then refer to another text to learn more about those plants. So if this is what you need you may like this book.
