Prescription for Nutritional Healing by nutritionist Phyllis A. Balch and James F. Balch, M.D., has long been considered one of the most trusted, comprehensive sources on the mind-boggling array of vitamins, minerals, herbs, and other dietary supplements now available. Working from the premise that a good diet promotes good health, this third edition of PNH still starts with the basics: consume fresh produce, grains, and lean meats; avoid foods that are processed or high in saturated fat; cook using glass, stainless steel, or iron--never aluminum; and drink filtered water. The authors also stand by their claim that the government-prescribed recommended daily allowances are ridiculously low, and that the book's optimal daily intake for nutrients should be followed instead.

So what's new in the third edition? Along with now-accepted remedies, like zinc and echinacea for the common cold, the Balches also explore many of the newer supplements to hit the market: SAMe (recommended for depression and joint pain), phosphatidyl serine (mental acuity), red yeast rice (cholesterol), and 5-HTP (weight loss, insomnia, depression). You'll also find an expanded chapter on alternative therapies that encompasses Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, along with a hefty section on pain control that offers a grab bag of options such as acupuncture, biofeedback, guided imagery, chiropractic care, and massage.

Still, the bulk of the book remains the more than 250 health conditions--from everyday problems such as insect bites and bad breath to serious diseases including bulimia, cancer, and AIDS--and the nutritional protocols the Balches recommend for treatment. Since any number of supplements can be taken for the same condition, the Balches make sifting through the glut of information a little easier by separating their nutrient recommendations into four categories: essential, very important, important, and helpful. And they take a lot of the guesswork out of buying supplements by listing the brands they know and trust. Once again, the authors have squeezed in an impressive amount of information, including valuable sidebars on topics such as the dangers of aspartame; how to choose a calcium supplement; common heart problems and procedures; cancer risk factors, diagnosis, and treatments; and sports nutrition. This is not relaxing reading, but it's enormously useful. While the material can be dense, the authors still manage to present it in a straightforward manner that's understandable even for readers without a medical degree. --Norine Dworkin

3 out of 5 stars Okay, but not great.......2007-10-11

I thought this book was okay, but I wouldn't call it a classic. I did hold onto it, and it is on my bookshelf, but I rarely refer to it. When I do, it's just to get a basic description of an illness, not for the remedies it recommends. I felt like it just repeated what everybody else is saying, and didn't really have any original information to offer.

5 out of 5 stars Prescription for Nutritional Healing 06.......2007-10-04

I am not a devout herbalist, but I don't like to take a lot of medications either. If I can heal myself or prevent problems with diet, exercise, therapies, vitamins, minerals, or herbal supplements, then I would prefer to!

I wanted one natural healing book. Just one- for reference. So I read through a TON of books at 2 different bookstores and at Whole Foods. I choose this one because it covered SO much.

It has sections on almost 300 ailments (for example: anxiety, hair loss, hypoglycemia, arthritis, stress, migraine, depression, indigestion, flu and bee-sting) and it lists the vitamins, minerals, and herbs good to use for each problem. Compared to my internet research, it recommends many of the same things and more. I love that it also gives advice on what not to take, what not to mix, how much, and what problems can arise (no other book seemed to do this as well). In addition, there is info on diet, exercise, and alternative therapies. In the front of the book, she explains herbs, minerals, the different types of enzymes, and more. I also enjoy the essential oils list in the back.

It is a little confusing when she lists some supplements by Brand Name (I don't like that). And the herbs are more of a post script to each list, but if you want more on herbs she does have a separate book just for that ("Prescription for Herbal Healing").

I am happy with just this one book- plus the advice of the wonderful folks at Erewhon and Whole Foods (who, as it turns out, reference this same book!).

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference Tool.......2007-09-28

What I love about this book is how thorough it is. Not only does it cover a lot of ailments, but when it lists helpful supplements, it explains exactly how they work, recommended dosage, and the importance of it. It also give suggestions for lifestyle changes (for example, foods to avoid, the importance of exercise, etc.) Amazing. It's organized well, you can look things up by ailment OR supplement.

5 out of 5 stars My go-to reference for family health..........2007-09-22

I have a bachelors degree in holistic health, and was introduced to this book years ago when I first began studying alternative medicine. I have used this reference time and time again in treating myself and my family for common ailments. It never fails to yield useful information, always directing the reader to conventional medicine for more serious illnesses. An extremely useful tool for family healthcare.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference.......2007-09-18

This is a great big book with a wealth of information about a great number (a few hundreds) of ailments, what causing them, and how to deal with them the natural way. With close to one thousand pages this is a complete resource of medical problems from A to Z. It is well researched, well referenced, and well written. It is also very simple to use, all ailments being ordered in alphabetical order. It is an excellent reference book, a health bible that should be readily available in each household. If you have a health problem I suggest checking what this book will tell you about it, before going to your doctor.

    Book Description

Cancer can now be cured, not just treated

We are not accustomed to thinking about a cure for cancer. We think of remission as the only possibility. But this book is not about remission. It is about a cure. This is possible because in 1990 Dr. Clark discovered the true cause of cancer. The cause is a certain parasite, for which I have found evidence in every cancer case regardless of the type of cancer. So lung cancer is not caused by smoking, colon cancer is not caused by a low roughage diet, breast cancer is not caused by a fatty diet, retinal blastoma is not caused b y a rare gene, and pancreatic cancer is not caused by alcohol consumption. Although these are all contributing factors, they are not THE cause. Once the true cause was found the cure became obvious. but would it work? I set a goal of 100 cases to be cured of cancer before publishing my findings. That mark was passed in December, 1992. the discovery of the cause and cure of all cancers has stood the test of time and here it is!

    Book Description

The companion volume to Chinese Herbal Medicine: Materia Medica, this book of Chinese medicinal formulas in English serves as both a textbook for students and a major reference source for practitioners. Included are nearly 600 Chinese medicinal formulas arranged in 18 functional categories.

For each of the 250-plus principal formulas there is a discussion of its therapeutic actions and indications, analysis of the functions and interactions of the ingredients, method of preparation, and a list of modifications to customize the formula in the clinic. Commentary explains different interpretations of the formulas, compares them with related formulas, and discusses their application in treating biomedically-defined disorders. Almost 350 variations and associated formulas offer additional options for the practitioner in the clinic. An informative introduction traces the historical evolution of the formulas, and provides practical pointers for their preparation and use.

5 out of 5 stars Chinese Herbal Medicine: Formulas and Strategies.......2005-11-08

As a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine I can attest to the value of this book's information. It is a fantastic reference book and provides practitioners with detailed formulae descriptions, analysis of formulae and is invaluable to any Chinese medicine practitioner.

I would not recommend this book to non-practitioners as it is very in-depth and does assume an detailed understanding of traditional Chinese medicine.
I have used this book extensively in my own practice for many years and still use it on a very regular basis.

    4 out of 5 stars Bensky's Formuales & Strategies.......2004-09-26

This is a classical book about Herbal Formulaes. I have read it several times and consult it often. I believe Strategy refers to how an herbologist will be able to use the book to add or modify ingridient and dosage. Unlike the review I wrote for "Material Medica", I find this is a useful book with much needed information to come up with a prescription. Needless to say the translation of this book is choppy in many places. The authors can keep the terms more to the point. These flowerly terms used is a minus.

The original source of these prescriptions are of interest to the medical historians only as modern pharmacologist are more concerned with the chemical interactions and its function. The lack of modern Chinese and western sources also shows this is just a compilation of old sources. In that respect there are many formula prescription books out in Chinese which can be translated nicely into English. The book does have IDs showing important formulas required for certain state or national examinations. However, these required formulas are not always detailed enough or exist to explain in details what they really are. Similar to Material Medica it also has PinYin flaws in many places showing its obvious lack of proof reading capability using modern Chinese word processors. All in all, this is still an authorative English language source on the subject of Formulaes.

    5 out of 5 stars No contenders.......2004-01-30

The fact that no real contenders have emerged in more than 13 years since this book's publication is sufficient testimony to its quality.

Formulas and Strategies is used in virtually every formal program in Chinese herbal medicine in the English-speaking world. It is by no means exhaustive, but it is more than sufficient as basic classroom text, and the quality of the content, while inconsistent, is on balance very high indeed. The book has not been updated in a while, so some information about herb-drug interactions is not reflected here, but there is not enough new information of that sort that its absence detracts in any major way from the book's value as a textbook. Any good teacher will be able to fill in those few blanks, and numerous journal articles have been written about the errors and omissions in Formulas and Strategies. To summarize, there are few errors and omissions for a work of its size, and the ones that are present are minor.

Some disagree with Bensky over translational matters, but it should be pointed out that he did provide a glossary of terms as an appendix. It is possible, with some effort, to get back to most of the Chinese terms he has translated.

A strength and a weakness of Formulas and Strategies is that Bensky chose, whenever possible, to go back to the original source where each formula first appears in history. This is actually very interesting in some ways and difficult in others, because many formulas have been used in different ways over the course of their history. It would have been nice to see more of that type of information, but the book is already quite large, and it is clear that some editorial decision had to be made. A much larger work would have been too expensive too produce and would not have sold well.

Formulas and Strategies has so far stood the test of time admirably. While it would be nice to see more competition in this area, Formulas and Strategies is just the sort of book you like to see in a market that is dominated by just one book. It is much better than it has to be to be the only one out there.

4 out of 5 stars Still the Standard.......2002-04-03

Regardless of its very few flaws, this is still the standard reference for basic chinese herbal formulas. Many books have formulas with herbs and dosages, but none speak so extensively of how each herb within the formula works. This is an indispensable tome for the OM student. As for whether the general public will appreciate it, I doubt it. This is the kind of book needed by those who aspire to writing personalized modifications of classical formulas... but no one else except the extremely curious patient will find it worth the price.

    4) Improving the soil

I am so impressed with this big, beautiful book! The photos are inspiring, and the technical aspects are thoroughly covered. I love the historic background of each vegetable and herb.
I think there is literally everything I ever needed to know about vegetable gardening from seed germination, through care and feeding, to harvest. Detailed charts outline fertilizer, pests, water, soil conditions, and planting and harvest times.

I keep it on my coffee table and flip through it daily just to enjoy the photos and learn some new fact.

You will not be disappointed with this book!

I am a new gardener and this book has helped so much! I look everything up in it. RIght down to problems with plant to how much water each plant gets. It has a guide to all plants and great pictures. Also has tips for gardening.

5 out of 5 stars Well Organized, Comprehensive, Excellent Layout.......2002-08-14

Burpee's "The Complete Vegetable and Herb Gardener: A Guide to Growing Your Garden Organically" is fantastic. In addition to what Burpee lists on the back cover of what is inside the book, there are also many easy-reading tables that contain excellent information such as the vitamin(s) that each vegetable contains, different cultivars, plant PH needs, watering needs per week, crop yields, etc. Many interesting tidbits.

The layout is so wonderful, one does not feel overwhelmed with all of the information that is in the book!

5 out of 5 stars Vegatable Gardening Made Really Easy.......2001-11-02

Very similar in content and structure to Ortho's Complete Guide to Vegtables. The difference comes in the experience the writer has growing and maitaining the various plants. I find using both books gives different perspectives for growing and caretaking of plants but conatins the same basic information. For instance the Ortho book has better Garden Setup and maintenance data, and raw data on the various gardening aspects like fertilizer and pest eradiction. The Burpee book focuses on plant and cultivar details a little better. The book is filled with plenty high quality pictures of plants and their fruits using multiple pictures of various cultivars within plant families.
The book is geared for both beginners in gardening and the handy do it yourselfer types. Chapters progress you through the steps from site selection and plant selection to harvesting, crop rotating and soil conditioning over winter and indoor greenhouse seed starting. The book also contains references to various cultivars within vegtable species, so a beginner gardener could not only successfully select and grow well know vegtables, but could also grow and use the odd often hard to find fresh herbs.
I consistently flip between both this book and Ortho's book. I find using them in this manner makes the information extracted complimentary and thorough.

2 out of 5 stars Outdated. See Herbal Medicine: Expanded Commission E Monographs.......2007-07-19

Very limited information in this book and it is not up to date. A great deal of more recent scientific research is not included.

If you want this type of book, the expanded version published in 2000 titled < > is more complete, but it too has flaws, but not nearly as many as this book. I can't think of any reason to buy this book instead of < >, unless for legal reasons one wants just the information from the Commission E Monographs and nothing more.

One very important difference between the Commission E Monographs and < < Herbal Medicine: Expanded Commission E Monographs >> is the expanded book contains extensive references, photographs and additional resources. The Commission E Monographs contain none of the references used to evaluate the herb nor any photos.

Another related book is the < < PDR for Herbal Medicines (Second Edition) >> it has considerably more monographs (700 herbs), but one serious flaw is the references are only listed at the end of each monograph. There is no way to know which reference a particular statement of fact came from. Thus it is very difficult to very a claim. At least the < > cites the source with the body of the text so any fact or claim can be verified or clarified by going to the cited source. The PDR has more European references, especially German references (which will not be useful to the average non European unless they know German) compared to the Expanded Commission book.

Note, the third edition of the < < PDR for Herbal Medicines >> has the references cited within the body of the text and the monographs are much expanded from the second edition. A fourth edition will soon be available.

Other than the above I have nothing new to say that the other reviewers haven't already said. I have met Paul Berger and I agree one hundred percent with his review for this book. He is an experienced clinical herbalist and published author with an excellent reputation.

1 out of 5 stars Not useful in practice, outdated safety information.......2007-05-09

The German equivalent of the FDA has a special section that approves or disapproves herbal medicines for sale, and states what claims may be made, and what cautions should be issued. The process for approval began more than 20 years ago, and approvals were finalized in the 1990s of a set of herbs. This book is a translation of the herb reports. The book is interesting historically, and perhaps legally, because here we have a modern industrialized country approving herbs for use, and not declaring them automatically to be either ineffective or dangerous without review, as is done by the US FDA. The book is almost useless, and sometimes dangerous for either the consumer or the herbal practitioner. The arcane rules and regulations of the commission have led to a book with bizarre contradictions and inconsistencies. Echinacea purpurea is approved for use. Echinacea angustifolia, the stronger herb in practice is not approved. To make matters more confusing, although Echiancea angustifolia is not approved, it is listed as contraindicated in autoimmune diseases because it might aggravate them. Which is it? Either it is an ineffective medicine or it is safe, it can't be both. The book is riddled with such inconsistencies. In some aspects of safety, the book is actually dangerous. In North American and British herbal practice, it is a common understanding that emmenagogue herbs (which promote menstrual flow) are contraindicated in early pregnancy. Several emmenagogues are described in the book, but none have any contraindication for pregnancy. In another matter, input into the monographs in the book was cut off in the early 1990s. A large body of research into herb side effects, and especially drug-herb interactions, has been published since that time, yet did not find its way into the book. The safety information is seriously out of date and incomplete. For reliability of the information, there is no way to check. By German law, the scientific references for the monographs are not available for review. This may be an important text in the history of herbal regulation in the modern world, but it is not recommended as a reference for common use.

5 out of 5 stars What else one can say about this book?.......2007-04-30

If you work with Phythotherapy, you must have this book because it has real information. I believe that it is time to have the volume number wto. One is not enough.

4 out of 5 stars Natural Medicine Education.......2006-11-05

The Complete German Commission E Monographs is a reference book that anyone dealing with natural medicine should have.

The knowledge gained from this book give one the tools to administer natural medicine in a much safer manner.

The book gives the uses, actions, doses, side effects, interactions with other medicines and contraindications. It also gives the duration of use for certain herbs.I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Important work if one understands its place.......2003-12-03

This is an important work, helping to document the validity of herbal medicine. However, it is not an all-encompassing work and obviously isn't referenced. Nevertheless, the German Commission E's method of publishing monographs based on the information gathered from companies, researchers, and practitioners (but apparently kept confidential) serves a useful purpose. It is always helpful to consult this text to get some solid conformation for common traditional uses. Every practitioner and researcher should have this book, though it certainly cannot be used in a vacuum.

    Book Description

With few exceptions-such as corn and pumpkins-everything edible that's grown in a traditional garden can be raised in a container. And with only one exception-watering-container gardening is a whole lot easier. Beginning with the down-to-earth basics of soil, sun and water, fertilizer, seeds and propagation, The Bountiful Container is an extraordinarily complete, plant-by-plant guide.

Written by two seasoned container gardeners and writers, The Bountiful Container covers Vegetables-not just tomatoes (17 varieties) and peppers (19 varieties), butharicots verts, fava beans, Thumbelina carrots, Chioggia beets, and sugarsnap peas. Herbs, from basil to thyme, and including bay leaves, fennel, and saffron crocus. Edible Flowers, such as begonias, calendula, pansies, violets, and roses. And perhaps most surprising, Fruits, including apples, peaches, Meyer lemons, blueberries, currants, and figs-yes, even in the colder parts of the country. (Another benefit of container gardening: You can bring the less hardy perennials in over the winter.) There are theme gardens (an Italian cook's garden, a Four Seasons garden), lists of sources, and dozens of sidebars on everything from how to be a human honeybee to seeds that are All America Selections.

4 out of 5 stars Well worth the price.......2007-07-18

There's an endless list of titles devoted to container gardening, but it turns out that not many are useful for growing vegetables. I borrowed several from the library, including Bountiful Container, and this is the only one I found useful. It's a valuable reference tool, so I'll be getting my own copy.

I have never gardened before; my parents and grandparents had gardens as I grew up, which convinced me that I don't have the patience to go out and dig a big plot, then spend hours weeding it. In addition, we live in a condo with a small yard, so containers seemed to be the way to go, if only I could figure out how to successfully coax veggies from a container. Still, nobody I knew had really done this, so I found the book invaluable.

A lot of it may be old news to experienced gardeners, but as a beginner, it was extremely helpful to read what conditions each type of plant liked. There are some notes on design, as well as some great suggestions for themed gardens - I particularly liked the idea of attracting hummingbirds with a vibrant red garden. The book is well organized, with several pages devoted to the planting, care, and harvesting of each plant.

I knocked the book down 1 star because I think a few things should really be added. First, some color photos or illustrations. A previous reviewer mentioned that the illustrations are charming but lacking, and I agree. Second, further information about crops that can be planted twice - I know several cool weather plants can be put in for both spring and fall, which the book also mentions. The book walks through the spring planting, but then doesn't discuss the timing of the fall planting. If I have limited space for growing veggies, I really want to plant as much as I can in cycles, and it'd be helpful to have that information! Finally, some sort of chart that groups together plants which like the same conditions would be an extremely helpful addition to this book. You can get by with notes, but a chart would be a great reference tool.

5 out of 5 stars Best Father's Day Gift Ever!.......2007-07-09

My parents are beginning to feel the effects of the years. This spring, my Dad had serious surgery and he and Mom were both depressed that there could be no vegetable garden this year. What luck that I had stumbled onto the Bountiful Container while doing research for a garden class I was asked to teach this spring. I purchased the book and two self watering containers for them for Mothers and Fathers Days this year and they are having a ball with them! Their garden has always been in the back forty, and now, they are in an "intimate relationship" with their tomatoes, peppers, beans and cucumbers. This book is inspiring and hope building. It's the answer for all of us who don't have time, don't have space, don't have money, and simply don't need the overwhelming bounty of an in-ground vegetable garden. If you are such an expert gardener that you can't learn something new from every listing in this book, why didnt' you write this book? This book will ALWAYS be on my book shelf!

Will enjoy planting plants in containers of vegetables to eat.

5 out of 5 stars Save your money; the best book around for beginners........2007-05-09

This is hands down the best book on container gardening out there. With the exception of the edible flowers section (unless you're into that sort of thing), it's full of excellent information, from back to front. If you're new to container gardening like I was, I'd suggest that you start here with this book. It's readable, organized exceptionally and just generally well-written and thorough.

5 out of 5 stars Full of Joy and Information.......2007-04-12

I love this book and I will be pulling it out often this growing season. It's packed with very specific information on how to grow every imaginable edible plant --from flowers through vegetables and fruit trees--in containers. You will learn when to plant, which varities do best in containers, whether to start with seed or transplants, how to combine plants in a container for beauty and/or successive harvesting, what size container to use, how often to fertilize and with what, when to harvest...the list goes on and on. The writing itself is delightful, from the descriptions and planting instructions for theme gardens (Victorian Splendor, Tea Time, Childrens' Garden just to name a few) to the history of many of the plants and unusual recipes using the bounty of your containers (Begonia Sorbet, Strawberries with Scented
Geraniums and Creme Fraiche, Stuffed Squash Blossoms with Fresh Tomato Sauce)! The Bountiful Container is a joy to read and really makes you want to get out into your garden and start planting. It's both a feel good book and a very informative book--IMO a rare combination in a reference book. I can't say enough, I'm so glad I bought this book.

    4 out of 5 stars beware!.......2007-07-31

There is some potentially wacky stuff at the end of the book, as the publisher warns you. It describes herbal and dietary supplements that are basically totally unregulated. Nothing proven about efficacy. Yet still readily available at health stores. So the publisher made the pragmatic decision to include some information about these items.

If you are a layperson to the medical field, be aware that those supplements are really a walk on the wild side.

This is a great cook book. I am lossing weight and needed to find a good cook book with lower calories. The food that I have made from this cook book is great. It tastes like regular food. When I bring something to a party no one can tell the diffence. I tell others that are trying to loss weight about this book. This is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Making splendid treats with splenda.......2007-01-10

A friend of mine gave me this book for Christm,as the year that it first came out. I immediately began using it. Chai tea, hot cocoa, pumpkin muffins, glazed carrots, etc. all became quick favorites. My niece came for a visit and together we would cook up recipes to test. All winners. I sent her a copy for her birthday and she was thrilled. She had asked me to send her some of the recipies, I decided that it was just easier to send her the whole book!
For me, the only negative aspect of some of the recipies is that they are way to spicy (picante). Now I just modify the amount of spices I add and all are happy with the result!

    5 out of 5 stars Great cookbook.......2006-12-22

I like this cookbook. I have tried the strawberry lemonade, which was great, and a cheesecake. I look forward to trying more things. It also has the weight watchers points listed which is nice.

4 out of 5 stars Marlene Koch Fantastic Food with Splenda.......2006-11-06

This book has a good variety of recipes and is well organized. I also have another book using Splenda which is written by the same author. She covers the benefits of using Splenda very well. It's a great way to get rid of the empty calories in sugar without sacrificing sweet taste.

    5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Fit.......2006-01-05

I have been on a moderate carb diet for a few years and was experimenting with recipes that would fit with my exchange diet and carb counting. Splenda had been on the market for only a year and few people knew how to cook with it and gain good results. Enter Marlene Koch into my life. Her recipes from this book were just what the doctor ordered. There is just enough sugar to make the textures in the food work, but the carb count and fat content was "a perfect fit" for my diet needs. Not only that, but every recipe I tried tasted fantastic and this book has allowed me to return classic recipes such as three bean salad, coleslaw, gingerbread and "sugar" cookies back into my diet without guilt or ill effects. I've made many of the recipes in this book and make her "Heavenly Cheesecake" for my holiday table each year.

Thank you Marlene for all your hard work. I'm looking forward to reading and cooking from more of your books!
