4 out of 5 stars So you want to be a writer.......2007-04-26

There's a poem in this book called, So you Want to be a writer, and I think it should be read before anyone decides to call themselves a writer. Then they should look in the mirror, and ask themselves whether or not they're a fony. If they can answer that question "no, I'm not a fony," Then they should never attempt to write another word, because if they did everything that I just said they should do, then they were never a writer in the first place.

The consensus is the there is some good and some bad in this book, I own it, have read it and am inclined to agree.

4 out of 5 stars What Do Expect, The Guy Is Dead.......2005-01-27

If you're a Bukowski fan, you can't get enough. Just read it, it can't hurt except your pocket book, and if you're that skeptical go to the library.
Is that one says about a great artist/author's work after they're dead? It's redundant and mediocre?
It's just like when you like certain music and end-up collecting compilations. This book contains a lot of the old, but some new material and Bukowski carries on from the dead.
By all means you should read his earlier works, but all is good too.

Charles Bukowski, Sifting Through the Madness for the Word, the Line, the Way (Ecco, 2003)

Yet another collection of posthumously-published work from the ten thousand pages Buk left after his death, Sifting... is an inconsistent piece of work at best, like most of Buk's later collections of poetry. Every once in a while you get a great snatch of writing like the one that became the title of the collection, but it's mostly just the same old Buk, chopping up witty observations into line that look like poetry. That said, Buk was better than most at the chopping itself; he had an innate sense of what was really important in a piece, however vague it might be, and accenting it with the size and shape of the poem itself, making his prose-chopped-up-into-lines more readable than the vast majority of same.

The best thing about Sifting... is that it contains a lot more of the gems among the dross than many of Buk's later collections. You'll find yourself nodding and smiling every two or three pages here; not as much as in his best stuff (Burning in Water, Drowning in Flame remains the height of Bukowski's poetic achievement), but a lot more than in some of the recent books.

Worth it for Bukowski fans. Others might want to start wth Burning in Water, Drowning in Flame, War All the Time, or one of the other "best-of" collections from the early and middle periods. *** ½

2 out of 5 stars please be more careful with the man.......2003-05-24

To make it short: this is not Bukowski's best work. And it doesn't have to be. He published over 40 books when he was still alive and all that is released now after his death are the Left-overs. Some are stronger, some are weaker, but one thing is clear: with collections like this one you might scare off future readers because what can be found in this collection is less than average in quality for Bukowski. If you want to go ahead and discover Bukowski (and I strongly recommend that), buy one of his earlier books of poetry like: Burning in water, drowning in flame OR Dangling in the Tournefortia. This is where you find some of the best poems ever written in English. This new book is o.k., but at least wait until it comes out in Paperback...

5 out of 5 stars Getting the Hang of Being Dead?.......2003-05-02

Much better stuff than previous posthumous publications. Buk may eventually surpass Hemingway for more books published dead than alive.

5 out of 5 stars A pearl of thought from Goldratt's genius!.......2007-08-18

This is one of the best books on business administration I've ever read. OK, reading the final chapters related to information systems might be somewhat boring, but Part I alone is worth the highest praise. Why? Because it tears apart the obsolet Cost Accounting paradigms and other Jurassic sacred cows of the traditional administration that still nowadays, in the vast majority of the companies, lead business leaders to wrong decisions, with severe damage to the financial performance of companies and even countries! For example, if you read this book with an open mind you will learn that product cost is nothing more than an "accounting phantom" that haunts our daily routine and prevents us from seeing the whole picture and reaching to the best decisions for the company's objective. Moreover, Goldratt's system of Throughput Accounting is so much simpler that you'll be amazed about why we needed a physicist from Israel to teach us the obvious, common-sense thinking. The answer here is that common-sense is the least common of all resources, and learning to see the obvious simplicity in the middle of so much complexity created by ourselves is not obvious at all. Read, or better, study the book, and be prepared for mental challenges!

I think Goldratt is an excellent business consultant with excellent ideas to make your business a lot more profitable.

I ordered this book over 2 months ago from Amazon. They recently informed me they were cancelling my order as they could not obtain a copy to ship. Pretty poor availability and customer relations. Recommend finding someone else to order from if you really want the book.

3 out of 5 stars Heavy going.......2006-01-28

I am a huge fan of Goldratt and have got good results applying his ideas. This book is valuable, but only to those who have ready the more accessible books and thought about the content for quite a while. Definitely not an entry level Theory of Constraints primer.

In part that is because of the writing style, which is full of CAPITALISED TERMS which make the text HARD to read.

OK, we expect you to publish on your theory frequently.

Um, but I have nothing new to say. The theory was only big enough for one book.

Book Description

How should Tolkien's literary work be interpreted? Greg Wright, a life-long Tolkien scholar, in applying Biblical principles to Tolkien's fantasy, shows some surprising revelations about Tolkien's work that every Tolkien fan should read.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars chatty and churchy.......2007-07-16

Without a doubt, there are Christian resonances in Tolkien that are worth discussing, but Wright's methodology is rather heavy-handed. Wright does his best to impose an evangelical perspective on Tolkien with an emphasis on dogma rather than a sensitive reading of Tolkien. Moreover, Wright's conversational style would work well in a talk, but becomes irritating in a book. No index.

5 out of 5 stars A Genuinely New Perspective.......2004-03-22

If you want a quick, easy read that skims over Tolkien's works and then pops them into a convenient, lightweight package, do NOT read this book. On the other hand, if you are looking for a thoughtful examination of various aspects of Tolkien's body of work and an insightful exploration of how Tolkien's corpus could create the impact that it has had on our culture, then this is a book you MUST read.

One of the joys of this book is the author's commitment to maintaining a dialogue with his readers. Although an outgoing Christian himself, he never "preaches at" his reader. Rather, his approach is that of the website where his series on LOTR and Peter Jackson's films have been posted on for the last five years: "One of the practices at Hollywood Jesus is never to throw rocks at any artist or their work. Rather, we approach each work on its own terms, find common ground and open the doors of dialogue."

Here is an author who has written not to convince you that he is right, but to present some new ideas in order to stimulate your own thinking about Tolkien's thoughts and intentions. This is an author who is genuinely interested in feedback and discussion, who can sincerely and dispassionately dialogue with his readers, who wants more to provoke thought and discovery than just to prove a point.

If you want to know more about the text of the book, read the review posted below by "la solinas," but rest assured, no matter what you think of this book, you can take the opportunity to discuss it all further with the author himself. Don't miss it!

4 out of 5 stars Evangelical analysis of Tolkien.......2003-12-11

Greg Wright's book is an evangelical analysis of the Tolkien myth. I would recommend it to evangelicals who misunderstand the Christian basis of Tolkien's myth, or who wish to explain to one's stricter relatives why Tolkien is a good Christian.

I enjoyed Wright's analysis. He goes into detail into the general ideas behind the LOTR myth, analyzing the secular and Catholic roots of the story. (His explanation of Catholic Christianity's use of allegory is excellent).

However, there is quite a bit in the book about the spiritual helps and spiritual dangers of Tolkienmania, with an emphasis on a strict biblical world view.

If one is allergic to bible quoting, skip the book. If one wishes to see an analysis of Tolkien's tales from several religious/ethical worldviews, it is an excellent study. And, if one is a strict evangelical, it is a welcome addition to your library.

4 out of 5 stars Wright's corn worth its weight in gold.......2003-10-19

Greg Wright offers a perspective on Tolkien we don't often hear about these days, arguing that The Lord of the Rings is fundamentally pre-Christian in chronology and content. His book thus comes as a refreshing alternative to defensive Christian interpretations like Bradley Birzer's "JRR Tolkien's Sanctifying Myth" and Ralph Wood's "Gospel According to Tolkien".

Readers should be aware, however, that Wright has an aggressive evangelical agenda. The subtitle, "sifting the gold from the glitter", hints at the angle he's coming from. He warns that pagan elements in Tolkien's story need to be recognized for what they are -- glitter not gold, chaff instead of corn. Needless to say, one person's gold is another's glitter, and in truth we should recognize both pagan and Christian elements as part of the "gold" of Tolkien's classic.

Wright is correct, however, to point out that Tolkien thought he had chaff in his own corn, even if we as readers are not inclined to recognize it as such. From a Christian point of view, there is too much "long defeat" in Middle-Earth, and never enough confident victory. The Fourth Age grows even darker than the previous cycles, and men have to confront evil without help from wizards and cheerfully courageous hobbits. As the apocryphal dialogue between Finrod and Andreth indicates, the race of men remains hopeless without the Christ event. But the flip-side to Wright's observation is equally important: Tolkien couldn't do without this chaff, and he even liked its taste. He loved and emulated pagan themes like hopeless courage, even if as a Christian he couldn't quite "go there".

The best parts of the book are the last two chapters which focus on the Fourth Age and alternate Catholic ways of viewing Tolkien's work. Wright is sensitive to Catholic doctrine (rare for an evangelical) and has done his homework. He cites Regina Doman's excellent contrast between the Protestant and Catholic views of history, the latter of which puts The Lord of the Rings into perspective as an historical episode consistent with Christian salvation-history. The heroes of this story are "faithful" to the extent that Eru has revealed himself to them. But ultimately the pagan world-view is operative in Middle-Earth, and Frodo was doomed to failure.

Wright and I come to similar conclusions for very different reasons, but the important thing is that he understands Tolkien's story for what it is: pre-Christian myth as opposed to Christian metaphor. For those who can wade through the evangelical chaff, Wright's corn is worth its weight in gold.

5 out of 5 stars Very Insightful.......2003-10-16

This book was very helpful to me. I am not a 'Middle Earth' freek, but I wanted to know more about Tolkien's work, especially in view of the attention it is getting in the movies. As a Christian, this book gave me the insights I needed. Greg's style of writing is easy to read. His candid observations are a big help to any Christian who wants to further understand how to interpret Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. And, if you are in Christian leadership, this book is a must for you to read. Thanks Greg...a BIG help!

Book Description

"It is one matter to forget things when you have a million thoughts flooding your mind and quite another to forget when your head is as empty as a looted store."
-from Remind Me Why I'm Here

In the spring of 1996, Diana Lund was a top-ranked project manager in her mid-thirties when a car accident instantly changed her personality and her life's direction. Thrust into short-term memory loss and cognitive deficit, self-perception kept colliding into reality. Neurologists underestimated her difficulties; they sent her back to work, to manage multi-million dollar contracts, in a mentally compromised state.

Beyond an account of devastating internal transformation, Remind Me delves into neurological research and trends. Lund pushes her intellect to its limit to unravel mysteries about her brain and accident. And on her quest to become whole again and to understand the neurological world, she discovers hope.

"A topic that could be dense and heavy becomes a page turner. Even sophisticated professionals can relate to the freshness of observations . . ."
- Leonard Diller, PhD, Prof. of Rehabilitation Medicine, NYU School of Medicine; Director of Psychology, Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine

"A superbly written volume . . . illustrating . . . that even so-called minor brain injuries can produce functionally incapacitating cognitive and neurobehavioral impairments . . ."
- Yehuda Ben-Yishay, PhD, Prof. of Clinical Rehabilitation Medicine, NYU

"Essential reading for clinicians, families, and counselors."

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable story.......2006-11-26

Reviewed by Cathy Yanda for Reader Views (10/06)

Diana Lund's story cannot help but inspire anyone who reads "Remind Me Why I'm Here." As the reader is increasingly drawn into her daily life, one quickly realizes how different her life has become. One day she is a top-ranked project manager; the next, she is struggling to be able to focus on her computer monitor. One day she is able to keep track of work and social commitments; the next she sits and cannot concentrate on even one small task. One day she is a woman in love, thinking of marriage and children; the next she is dependant on him for everything from grocery shopping to keeping appointments straight. One day she is a loving daughter; the next she doesn't recognize her mother in a restaurant. There is much more.

As the reader walks with Diana in her daily life, watching her trying to fit into her previous work and social life, continuing to do her best to research what is going on with her, one can't help but develop great respect for this remarkable woman. This is not only a memoir. It is an eye opening look into something that could happen to any of us. Diana learns to set the laundry basket in the middle of the living room floor to remind her that she has a load of laundry in the washing machine. She puts a sign in the kitchen to remind herself to set a timer when she puts food on the stove so it will not burn. She discloses many other tricks that could be helpful to those who are aging.

Over time, Diana's relationship with her boyfriend fizzles, she loses her job, and she loses track of her finances. Many of us would have given up on things. She did not. She worked harder to learn all she could, to write things down because she knew wouldn't remember them, and to keep the journal that eventually contributed to this book. Diana, now in love with a wonderful man, writes, "I am at peace with who I am. My new life of work brings joy, creativity and goodness to me, as does my partner-for-life." She is not a whisper of the woman she was before the injury, but truly a shouting voice for those who have endured brain trauma. "Remind Me Why I'm Here" is beautifully written and should be in the waiting area of every neurologist. Personally, I am eager to read her second memoir.

5 out of 5 stars Respect Requires a Memory.......2006-08-14

"Respect requires a memory." This is just one discovery Diana Lund makes during her journey as a brain-injured individual. This book is amazing on many levels. In Remind Me Why I'm Here, the author tells the inside story of brain injury. It is filled with minute detail cataloging the day-to-day progression of how her life changed after what she thought was a relatively minor car accident.

Even though the author has a degree in psychology, this is not an essay final, nor is it a thesis paper. Without question, however, it is extremely useful material for psychologists, neurologists and those associated with rehabilitative medicine. Even if you are not in these fields of study, it makes for interesting reading. Diana Lund is a truly unique individual. Clearly an intelligent, educated and highly capable woman, she started a journal of all of her actions shortly after the accident when she noticed her odd and changed behavior. Had she not done this, it seems this book would have been impossible to write. She recalls things as silly as leaving the milk on the counter instead of returning it to the refrigerator, as well as things more alarming, like having no memory of a conversation had only five minutes prior. She burned her food. She took hours to write simple notes. Her IQ dropped 30 points. She couldn't get through her in-box at work, and she even had difficulty recognizing her own mother. Through this personal and brave journey, the reader not only gains respect for the fragility of what we perceive to be a normal life, but also the importance of emotional support for the disabled.

It is a well-written medical and psychological journey of discovery and rediscovery and should be required reading for anyone associated with a brain-injured individual.

One of Americas greatest landscape designers and conservationists, Jensen used native plants to introduce the influential Prairie style of landscape architecture. In Siftings, Jensen shares his memories of "wandering in many lands" and his life in the heart of Middle America. His recollections--like his designs--express a love of natural landscapes and regional cultures. As he sifts through a lifetime of ideas about gardens, cities, towns and parks, Jensen makes an eloquent case for a natural style of American landscape.

    1 out of 5 stars A Woman's Guide to Manipulation.......2006-12-25

This book teaches women how NOT to have a good relationship with a man. Women who follow this book become spiritual "police" rather than trying to have a normal relationship with a man. It is important to pay attention to a man's character, but it isn't right to tell women to corner men and bash them with Bible verses and expect them to whimper and follow. All people, men included, need to be allowed to think for themselves and change in their own time. No amount of nagging and pestering from a significant other is going to change a person by itself. "From his lonely pits, traps of blind, dead end pursuit, a man cannot remove himself..."

This book emasculates the role of the man as the pursuer and leader in a relationship and makes the relationship into character lessons rather than a vibrant, loving relationship. Please, use your brain rather than rely on a book like this for how to have a relationship.

5 out of 5 stars Sifting Men:A Woman's Guide to Assessing Male Character.......2005-10-08

Excellent Christian point of view for the "dating","partner seeking" woman. Great male character check by using the book of Proverbs.

    5 out of 5 stars Single Woman's Essential Guide.......2003-05-16

This book helps to shine a light on the murky world of dating. With compelling biblical principles and sometimes humorous stories, Ellis provides a practical guide to spiritual discernment. Particularly interesting to me(as a woman) was the male perspective that Ellis gives. The book is easy to read and addresses the subjects most pertinent to the topic, providing Scripture to back up the concepts. This would be a great book for a young ladies' Bible Study group, or for personal edification. You will no doubt recognize yourself and the men you know in the illustrations (I did)!

        Product Description

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on bran, sharps, and other residues derived from sifting, milling or other working of cereals or of leguminous plants in United States face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying bran, sharps, and other residues derived from sifting, milling or other working of cereals or of leguminous plants to United States? How important is United States compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of bran, sharps, and other residues derived from sifting, milling or other working of cereals or of leguminous plants vary from one country of origin to another in United States? On the supply side, United States also exports bran, sharps, and other residues derived from sifting, milling or other working of cereals or of leguminous plants. Which countries receive the most exports from United States? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for bran, sharps, and other residues derived from sifting, milling or other working of cereals or of leguminous plants in United States. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for bran, sharps, and other residues derived from sifting, milling or other working of cereals or of leguminous plants for those countries serving United States via exports, or supplying from United States via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where United States fits into the world market for imported and exported bran, sharps, and other residues derived from sifting, milling or other working of cereals or of leguminous plants. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for United States in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that United States is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize United States compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.

          Product Description

This study covers the world outlook for chemical mixing, kneading, crushing, grinding, sifting, homogenizing, emulsifying, and stirring machines excluding dairy homogenizing machines across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.
