5 out of 5 stars Home landscaping book review.......2006-02-24

This was a very helpful book - straightforward and practical ideas for plantings around my house & yard. It included planting layout diagrams, plant list and sketches of what things might look like during different seasons.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for Ohio gardening.......2003-06-26

This book is a tremendous resource for landscaping in the midwest. It provides great ideas for landscaping for different seasons, conditions, and locations. Most of the recommended varieties of plants are easy to find at your local nursery which has always been a problem with other books I have used. The pictures and drawings really provide extreme value when trying to picture how plants will look together. It has already given me enumerous great ideas and suggestions.

4 out of 5 stars Good ideas for Michigan landscaping.......2003-06-20

This book is a good source for midwest-specific plantings and landscape ideas. I found I didn't have to look up the growing zones of plants I found interesting, wondering "Would this plant grow well around here?"

I also enjoy the overall friendly tone of the text. Some other books of this type that I own are written in a stuffy, almost highbrow manner.

The only thing I would have liked to have seen more of in this book is more actual photographs of the landscapes. There are many photos of the featured plants, but the book relies heavily on artwork for the landscape design images.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource!.......2003-02-27

A big problem I've had with gardening books is that they so often cover areas with different climates (such as the wet Pacific Northwest) than that which I have to face here in the American Midwest. This book, however, has shown itself to be an excellent resource!

It starts out with a portfolio of 23 designs, giving the reader excellent advice on appearance and what plants to use, complete with color pictures, and a sample graph paper design. After that, it has step-by-step instructions (again with great color illustrations) on building projects, such as sidewalks, walls, patios and so much more. The final part of the book is a series of plant profiles that looks at garden plants and their needs.

So, just to make everything perfectly clear, I loved this book, and highly recommend it to every gardener in the American Midwest!

5 out of 5 stars A very helpful design book for all levels of landscaper.......2002-01-13

Excellent ideas and designs with excellent plant choices. Great for the beginner or designer to create updated and hardy garden designs that put on a show throughout the seasons.I am a designer and love books, this is once of the easiest to understand and carry out.

A very thorough and well organized guide. It not only tells you what to do but helps you frame the questions you should be asking. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT GARDENING BOOK.......2007-01-14

I bought my first house in October 05 and I wanted beautiful spring and summer flowers. The property had roses and several other perennials. I needed a book that would help this beginner know what to do with what was already there as well as help me add new plants and flowers. I reviewed 25 gardening books from my library network last spring. This was by far my favorite. It gives you all the things you should know for lots of different flowers and plants and lets you know things you should be doing each month...like plant, prune, fertilize, etc. There are two versions of this book the original and this revised version. The revised costs a little more but there are color pictures in this edition as well as a much better layout in general. To me the newer edition was worth every extra penny and is the only one that I actually purchased out of all the books I reviewed. A must have for any Ohio gardener.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book by one of Wisconsin's garden experts!.......2007-09-11

This book met all of my expectations. I recommend it to any Wisconsinite who enjoys backyard gardening.

    5 out of 5 stars Good resource.......2001-09-10

This is one of the books that I refer to often when deciding what to plant in our yard.

Descriptions of the plant, whether it's a native species, and recommendations for certain varieties to look for, are very useful.

Is it a single resource that answers all of your questions? No. But no one book could be, and that's why you choose a few valuable books to provide a range of information.

If you live in Wisconsin, this book should be in your reference collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Garden Book for Wisconsin.......1999-12-26

The book contains 445 pages, about 30 pages are on general gardening and 30 pages are specific to Wisconsin. Specific information includes a full page color USDA Hardiness Map of Wisconsin with detail showing county borders, Wisconsin frost maps, monthly temperature & precipation data for 27 Wisconsin cities, lists of Wisconsin gardens and societies, and more.

The remaining 385 pages are about selected species. And these pages contain some of the best information that I have ever read in a garden book. If you buy it just for these pages, you will have an excellent reference book no matter where you live.

The species info covers 26 annuals, 15 bulbs, 17 ground covers, 10 ornamental grasses, 28 perennials, 6 roses, 25 shrubs, 30 trees, 3 turf grasses, and 9 vines, with 160 small photos. The info is perfectly arranged with two pages of text per each species. Each contain a paragraph on when to plant, where to plant, how to plant, care, additional info, and other varieties. My kind of book - all the info in one place and easy to find.

If you garden in Wisconsin, this is a must have book!

Unlike all my other garden books, I actual know of every species talked about in this book. The book talks about the plants we grow in Wisconsin. And best, Myers tells us about some popular plants that don't do well here (I wish the plant nursery would have told me this before they sold me many wrong varieties). I learned this by trial and error.

My only criticism about the book is that I wish she had written another volume. Great information!

3 out of 5 stars Good, But not REAL regional.......1999-05-20

I heard great things about the book but was a little disappointed. She dedicated only a very small portion of the introduction to the specifics of WI soil conditions, etc. I suspect the rest of the material regarding plant varieties was written on a formula provided by the publisher. (they do these books for a lot of states) Although she does address some WI specific issues for each variety, I thought the coverage was over simplified and I would have loved pictures included with the text. (All of the pictures are less than an inch high and inserted in the center of the book.) It's a nice attempt at a broad set of topics. Maybe it would have been even better with less of a "follow the formula" form.

As a new and inexperienced gardener, I found this book to be very helpful when planning my small garden. The language is very clear and easy to understand, especially for people who are unfamiliar with basic garden terminology. In addition to planting tips, there are sections devoted to all the different types of plants, flowers, and shrubs. Each spread contains basic information about various plants, including information on when and where to plant them, specific planting instructions and a "TLC" section for each plant. There are also beautiful color photos of hundreds of different plants and suggestions on which plants make great garden companions. I'm very glad that I have this book to help me along during my adventures in gardening!

Acanthus Press puts out the most beautiful books and this one does not disappoint. Garden's of the american aristocracy of the northeast and midwest are put on display with gorgeous images to accompany the scholarly text. These gardens are breathtaking and though layed out many years ago, they resonate today; true beauty is eternal I suppose. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in formal gardens of the Gatsby set or frankly to anyone with a love for beautiful things. A gorgeous book on a gorgeous subject, another great book from Acanthus Press.

      2 out of 5 stars No illustrations.......2006-08-29

While this may be an excellent resource for around-the-year gardening, I was disappointed that there were absolutely no photographs of the recommended plants or examples of blooming beds that could be created. I purchased this book and intended it for a friend who is moving to Missouri and thought illustrations of the flora that thrive there would have been an asset, especially if she is unfamiliar with something Mr. Miller recommends. End the end, I returned the book and purchased his other book, Missouri Gardener's Guide that does have a photo reference. While the book description did not say there were illustrations, I assumed (incorrectly) that a book boasting blooms all year would have plenty of pictures to prove it!
