Fans of James Patterson's resourceful cop Alex Cross will be relieved to find that he's back on familiar territory with Violets Are Blue--and, more importantly, that this is one of the best Alex Cross thrillers yet.

The malign criminal genius of Roses Are Red is fixing to give Alex a hard time once again. The FBI joins Patterson's dogged cop in a particularly unsettling investigation: two San Francisco joggers have been viciously murdered and are found suspended by their feet, with all the blood drained from their corpses. And when further brutal deaths follow in California and on the East Coast, Alex is forced to contemplate the bizarre possibility of modern-day vampires, although his instincts point him to one of the many sinister religious cults that flourish on the West Coast. Aided by Jamilla Hughes, a streetwise young woman detective from San Francisco, Alex finds that he has to crack not one but two impenetrable mysteries to stop further bloodletting.

Patterson fans expect the extremely concise, page-turning chapters (116 of them here!), along with a reluctance to dawdle over details of his hero's personal life, and both characteristics are firmly back in place. If you can resist reading this one in just a few sittings, you deserve some kind of a thriller reader's medal. --Barry Forshaw, Amazon.co.uk

Alex Cross has never believed in vampires. But when two joggers are found slain in a manner that suggests a macabre ritual, he has to reconsider. Someone believes in vampires enough to have committed a series of bizarre murders that appear to be the work of one. Local police are horrified, and even the FBI is baffled.

Cross takes on the case and plunges into a netherworld of secret clubs and role-players, a world full of poseurs and playactors--and someone demented enough to have crossed the line from dark ritual to real blood. At the same time, a lethal supercriminal from Cross's past known as the Mastermind is stalking him, taunting him, and threatening everything he holds dear. Cross has never been closer to defeat, or in greater danger. In a shocking conclusion, Alex Cross must survive a deadly confrontation--only to discover at last the awful secret of the Mastermind.

2 out of 5 stars violet guide review.......2007-04-14

I was quite disappointed in this book. I was looking for a basic how to guide in the care of violets. It was to scientific in nature, and not basic in the information needed. I would not recommend it for novice violet growers such as myself.

    5 out of 5 stars Very pleased!!.......2006-05-25

I grow hundreds of violets, I'm experienced but always searching for something new and better to learn. I find this little book very informative and well written! The types, history, hybrids (incl. the list & tips for some variants), cultivation, reproduction, tips & tricks, pests - it's all here.

I guess if you ever happen to seriously grow african violets or have some of them on the window sills, this book is will tell you everything you need to know for successful keeping these pretty little plants! :)

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK TO ADD TO YOUR COLLECTION.......2006-01-14

Being an enthusiastic hobbyist, I have found this work to be most helpful. In one way or abother, this one work is able to answer the majority of my questions and has certainly enhansed my ability to enjoy by hobby. Of course one book can not do it all, but this one certainly comes very close. I collect books on the subject of African Violets and enjoy them almost as much as actually collecting, raising and enjoying the plants. This work has been a great addition to my collection and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The Latest Book on African Violets.......2000-12-23

This is the latest book on African Violets and it is certainly one of the most updated ones regarding techniques and products available in the market. This book shows how to propagate, cultivate/grow and show your beloved African Violets. Great ideas on type of water, soil, light, humidity to obtain great show plants. Also, it has ideas on how to prevent diseases such as cyclamen mites, crown rot, ... Great book for beginners and even for those wanting to hybridize their African Violets.

    3 out of 5 stars A OKAY BOOK BUT I HAVE RESERVATIONS.......2006-01-14

I was in complete agreemnent with the first reviewer of this particular book. I did find certain aspects to be quite helpful and am certainly glad I added it to my collection (of books on this subject). On the other hand, I could not recommend it for the beginning in this wonderful hobby. To start with, the author did seem quite full of himself and did indeed treat the reader as if he were lecturing a small child. I am no expert in this area, but again, I did not just fall off a turnip wagon either. While worthwhile reading, there are certainly better books out there for the money and I would suggest you take a close look at some before you leap at this one. If like most of us, you do not have all that much money to throw around, you could probably spend you money more wisely elsewhere.

    3 out of 5 stars A little disappointing.......2003-05-18

Let me preface this by saying that this is the first book on African Violets that I've purchased. I have just gotten into the "Violet" hobby, and presently share my home with 26 of them (and growing!).

I was looking for a reference guide. I'm a novice but not neccessarily a beginner. There was a lot of great information there, if you are growing your first AV, and have no idea where to start in caring for it and there was a nice section on creating your own hybrids. But somehow I felt like the writer was talking down to me through the whole book. I would have liked to see more discussion about the different leaf and flower types, and a little less obbsessing about drownings.

If you're not starting at the very beginning of your African Violet hobby- maybe this isn't the right book for you, but if you are just starting, and need all of the basic information this could be a good jumping off point for you.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL LITTLE BOOK.......2006-01-13

I raise African Violets strictly as a hobby. I have owned and used this great little book for a number of years now and have found it to be quite valuable hobbyist like myself. It has a number of very nicely done illustrations, both color photos and black and white drawings. Like another reviewer, I have found the Q&A Section of the books to be more than useful. I have yet to come across a question that this section did not at least touch on at the very least, or refer me to where I could find the answer. The text is well done and quite understandable. I have a number of other books on the same subject and some of those get quite "techy" at times...not so this volume. Recommend this one highly.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book with much information for the novice!.......2000-08-12

Tony Clements' "African Violets" book is an excellent, one-stop reference with a wealth of information.

Being new to the hobby, I found this guide amazingly useful. It features seven main sections, beginning with the history of African Violets (very interesting) and continuing through the basic topics of plant care and propagation. It includes sections on basic care, pests and diseases, propagation by seed or leaf, and discussions on displaying African Violets.

Most useful, however, is the seventh section entitled "Your Questions Answered" which features a handy and easy-to-use reference of common questions and answers. These are separated by category headers (e.g. "Pots And Repotting", "Temperature, Humidity, And Water", etc) and contain a shortened, easily accessible version of the information found within the first six sections of the book.

The book also includes a "List of Popular Named Varieties" and a "Suppliers and Useful Addresses" list. Neither is overly informative (the suppliers list contains only six references, three for the United Kingdom and three for the United States), however both are nice touches.

As a new participant in the African Violet keeping hobby, I found this book to be an excellent source of information. For those more experienced in this hobby, "African Violets" is still a great reference, and an easy, informative read.

5 out of 5 stars great reading-I'm trying their technique of hybridising-.......1998-01-26

Very interesting book.I've already had success with stem propogation. This book explains how to cross pollenate two different colored violets.I just cross pollenated a single white flowered violet with a double pink flowered violet. I won't find out if it's a success for at least a year but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a bi-color double bloom. We'll see.

      Book Description

This study of Boston's West Indian immigrants examines the identities, goals, and aspirations of two generations of black migrants from the British-held Caribbean who settled in Boston between 1900 and 1950. Describing their experience among Boston's American-born blacks and in the context of the city's immigrant history, the book charts new conceptual territory. The Other Black Bostonians explores the pre-migration background of the immigrants, work and housing, identity, culture and community, activism and social mobility. What emerges is a detailed picture of black immigrant life. Johnson's work makes a contribution to the study of the black diaspora as it charts the history of this first wave of Caribbean immigrants.

      Book Description

The summer that Viney is eleven years old is extraordinary. It takes her out of school and puts her under the wing of Missy Violet, a well-loved midwife whose wise and warm ways help teach Viney about the business of catchin" babies. Suddenly, Viney must learn about roots and herbs and their medicinal purpose, understand the contents of Missy Violet's "birthin" bag," and contend with a snooty peer and wild, irrepressible cousinCharles Elister Paxton Nehemiah Windbush. And all this before she actually helps to deliver a single baby! At turns scary, funny, and exhilarating, the rhythm of Viney's rural life in the South quickens as she embraces her apprenticeship and finds her own special place as Missy Violet's "best helper girl." Hot jiggetty!

4 out of 5 stars The real "world's oldest profession".......2005-05-02

When I first heard of the concept of this book I was skeptical. Another children's book about midwifery? Goodness me, didn't we already have "The Midwife's Apprentice" to fill that particular gap? Why on earth would the world need more than one book on the painful process of birthing babies? But after a moment of such ludicrous thoughts, I came to my senses. After all, we're talking about one of the most difficult and underappreciated professions in the world. The kind of job that's never received the respect of the medical community (in spite of having preceded it) or even the general modern populace. And this is the kind of job that's universal. Wherever there are humans, there are midwives. Heck, thinking in such terms as that, it's amazing that there aren't MORE children's books about it. Where's the Chinese midwife tale? The Roman? The Pict? Till such stories come, we must be content with what we have. And what we have is a lovely little number called, "Miss Violet and Me". A slim 100 page novella, the book had its flaws and fumbles, but altogether it's a good egg. A nice little tale.

Viney hasn't a clue where babies come from. All she knows from experience is that once in a while her mama gets fat and then the amazing Missy Violet comes in the house and leaves them with a beautiful new baby. Unfortunately, Missy doesn't work for free and Viney's father owes her a child or two. The fairest method of payment turns out to be Viney herself. Turned into Missy Violet's own personal helper, Viney has the joyful task of going out and helping her idol "catch a baby" or two. In the process, she learns the truth of birth, how to cope in difficult situations, and eventually how to save the day. Set in the rural South around the 1930s, the book tells short enjoyable tales about the rarely recorded lives of African-American midwives.

I commend the book fully for its subject matter. First time author Barbara Hathaway based the tales on the stories told by her mother about a relative who'd served as a southern midwife in the 30s. Through the book we get a peek into the inner workings of those professionals that relied on useful herbs and home remedies to produce healthy babies and mothers. Unfortunately, the book is only 100 pages. Just as you begin to learn a little more about Missy Violet and Viney, the book stops with a screech. I couldn't help but feel that there was so much more to say in this story. So much more to tell. Also, I got the really clear sense that white people get off pretty darn easily. Every white person in this book seems to be exceptionally broadminded towards their African-American neighbors. There's hardly a whiff of prejudice, let alone Jim Crow. And though I probably wouldn't have wanted the book to indulge in lengthy speeches against the evils of the world, a little realistic glimpse into just how HARD it was to be black in the South in the 30s wouldn't have been out of place.

So credit towards a great story and interesting characters. Points off for an overabundance of nice whites and zippo recognition of the reality of the setting. As a first book, "Missy Violet and Me" has lovely potential. Author Hathaway is certain to produce more fine books in the future. Here's hoping they're longer.

5 out of 5 stars An African Vilolet's Best Friend (And Your's Too).......1997-09-27

A few years ago I checked out from the Public Library "Growing African Violets and some other flowering houseplants", by Ruth Coulson. It was like finding a good friend or neighbor.

This book has the most practical advice and so very well written, I have been searching for it ever since. Its a great reference book and is so well laid out you can pick it up and find the area you are particularly interested in with wonderful advice. Not only was it well written and organized, what she writes really works.

I have been searching for the book ever since. As it was published in Australia in 1986, it has been very difficult to find. Thank you to Amazon, and my friend Jane who told me about Amazon.

To all of those folks out there that would like to grow African Violets and think they are hard, get this book. Violets are really very easy and Ms. Coulson helps you right over that hurdle.

5 out of 5 stars Queen of african violets.......2003-08-30

M's Van Pelt brings her considerable experience and knowledge to the writing of this book. At one time, african violets were the most popular indoor blooming plants.* This book came out during that first flush of popularity for violets.

This book not only has beautiful color photos, but detailed black and white line drawings. M's Van Pelt explains everything from "boy" and "girl" foliage to how to grow and show violets. There are a few outdated comments - there are now some yellow african violets and the internet has made swapping leaves a much quicker process. But her methods of plant care are clear and concise, based on the plants needs as well as the folks living in the house. If you're interested in african violets, I recommend this book highly.
