The American Horticultural Society's Plant Propagation is one of those stuck-on-a-desert-island books. All the information you could ever possibly want in order to propagate virtually any plant or tree or cactus or succulent that might be growing on said desert island is to be found somewhere between the covers of this marvelous, informative book. If you're tired of buying many pots of expensive perennials, tuck a copy of Plant Propagation under your arm and buy one good specimen. From that specimen, following the simple directions, make many plants. It's the kind of skill that all grandmothers of a more distant generation seemed to have.
Still mixed up about hypogeal and epigeal germination? Can't tell a bulbil from a cormel? The very first section covers all the basics of plant biology as well as the history and basic how-to of propagation. The body of the book is divided into "Garden Trees," "Shrubs and Climbing Plants," "Perennials, Annuals and Biennials," "Cacti and Other Succulents," "Bulbous Plants," and "Vegetables." Each section begins with an overview of appropriate propagation techniques: the many styles of grafting, seed saving, taking cuttings, and bulb and root division. Individual plants within each section are addressed alphabetically. With Plant Propagation in hand, you can hybridize your own rose and name it after yourself. The text is written to an intelligent, somewhat experienced gardening reader, and the lush illustrations are accurate and effective. --Schuyler Ingle

Plant Propagation.......2007-09-29
An excellent resource for propagating just about any plant using a variety of techniques depending on the time of year and the purpose. While it took me a while to figure out where to find the guide for plants not featured in full page explanations, once I did I was ready to take on new projects. A great book for growing new plants for the garden and for friends.
I loved my book.......2007-07-08
This book walked me thru step by step on the project I had wanted to do.It let me propagate my blackberry bush from just a small twig.It has different ways how to propagate and on different types of plants, and I will keep this book close to me at all times
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK FROM THIS PUBLISHER_BUY SAME BOOK FROM NHGC FOR 5 BUCKS!.......2007-05-26
This book is amazing but I strongly recommend that you buy Alan Toogood's "Plant Propagation" from a different publisher. The National Home and Gardening Club published this exact same book (with a different hardback cover) the same year the AHSociety published the above book. This book is currently selling on Amazon for just under $5 and is a much better buy.
Note: Amazon does not have a photo for Toogood's other book and most people probably overlook that and purchase the above text.
Excellent manual for gardeners.......2007-05-15
This is a necessary book for those of us who need an all encompassing reference for plant propagation. There is no better source than the American Horticultural Society to give you a straight answer on the best methods for propagating each type of plants. Nicely illustrated and plainly written.
Excellent coverage of plant propagation techniques.......2007-05-07
A excellent book for anyone including the professional who wants to review plant propagation techniques, and at the same time not to technical for the beginner who wants learn basic plant propagation. I bought it as an aid in teaching one of my sons basic plant propagation even though I am a professional horticulturist myself.

Not useful for the gardener or landscaper.......2007-09-19
This book is intended for plant scientists, and I was astounded to find how useless a gigantic tome like this can be to a gardener. For starters, in 1188 pages there are zero photos. There is zero color. There's a huge number of amateur black ink drawings that suggest major details of leaves, etc., but no refinements. For visual identification purposes this book is near-useless, so it cannot be thought of as a woody plant encyclopedia. Also, the author has a peculiar manifest of political correctness: he won't speak ill of a plant. So, for example, the discussion of Rhus never mentions that at least three species (poison ivy, oak, sumac) are known for inducing allergic skin reaction after contact. You'd better know that and be able to recognize these because to Dirr that's unmentionable. Nor can I find mention that any berry, leaf, or bark is poisonous though to be fair, I didn't check all 1188 pages. Nor will I; I exchanged my copy for the same author's "Hardy Trees and Shrubs" which is what I should have bought to begin with. It has everything the scientific Manual lacks. That's Dirr's book for gardeners, and still gives you a taste of his political correctness peccadilloes.
Dirr is the Most Comprehensive.......2007-07-05
I am an OSU Master Gardener and we are taught to look to the best experts when we research information for ourselves or to give out to the public. This book, Dirr's "Manual of Woody Landscape Plants" and Carl Whitcomb's "Know It and Grow It III" are the best references a person can use when researching woody trees and shrubs for a landscape. Although Whitcomb's book has a map showing regions where the plant would grow best, Dirr's book has by far more trees and shrubs reviewed with more cultivars listed also. Additionally, Dirr's book is listed entirely by scientific name making it easy to locate information about a plant quickly.
"Manual" is the right name for this book........2007-03-06
I bought this book because other books that I have by Dirr are worth every cent I have spent on them. This book is no different. No glossy pictures are present, but instead there are excellent, detailed line drawings of the identifying features of plant leaves and twigs. What this book does offer that other books I have read do not, is exhaustive information on just about every woody plant one might ever encounter. This book is a true "manual"; it is packed with information on every aspect of selecting, planting, managing, and propagating woody plants.
I doubt this book is essential for the casual gardener, but if you want a serious treatment of trees and shrubs for reference, this book is just what you are seeking. I bought the hardback because I knew that this is a book that will need to take years of abuse.
The best textbook I've ever bought.......2007-02-26
Easily worth ten times the price; an indispensable guide for any horticultural student. Contains encyclopedic knowledge, written in a friendly and approachable way. My copy is already tagged with post-its and notes in the margins; I will no doubt be using this regularly for my whole career.
Great resource.......2007-02-12
This is a wonderful book for those with at least moderate plant knowledge. Very valuable for looking up the difference between varities, but there are no color pictures.

Dry as Sawdust & a Paucity of Photos.......2006-09-01
This 638-pages work, published previously by the American Rose Society (ARS), is THE nitty-gritty dig for serious rose growers, plant science researchers; those involved with academic and industrial settings, horticultural nurseries, botanical gardens, and informed amateur enthusiasts. There are descriptions for more than 25,000 roses along with a sparsely populated (28) group of token photographs. The current edition is list priced at $130.00 and includes a CD.
Book needs more pics; CD needs better search capabilities.......2002-07-03
I bought this book and CD in the hopes of being able to identify several rose plants that my husband had rescued from the city's bulldozers. It is not designed for an amateur like me who needs pictures and drawings. I am less interested in the parentage of roses than I am in what the terms "semi-double, reverse, exhibition form, cupped" mean. Some roses did not even have the color of the bloom listed. The CD is great if you know the name of the rose you wish to search for, but cumbersome if you do not. Yes, you can search based on characteristics of a rose, but it's not easy. For example, there are no drop-down menus for options on search criteria. A search for a red rose with a "strong" fragrance yielded no results; "intense" fragrance did. When the results are shown, there is no number count on how many roses fit the criteria, and when you select one rose from the results to view, you must re-perform the search to look at another one. It's extremely frustrating. There are pictures of roses on the CD, but the search result listing does not show you which ones have pictures and which do not. Help is limited to FAQ's (with only two questions listed) and an email address. There is no online method for updating the program so there is no hope of this version becoming any better. ...
The ultimate reference work on roses.......2001-09-05
If you love roses and if you want to know about the full range of rose varieties that you may encounter at your local nursery or in mail order catalogues, this volume is essential. The expense is justified in part by the CD-ROM, which gives you the ability to search the underlying database at will. I enjoyed the pictures (although they don't match other works like Botannica) as well as the articles on famous European rose gardens. In any work of this magnitude there are bound to be errors (e.g., Meilland's Michelangelo is yellow, not pink), but the overall accuracy is very impressive. If you are only dabbling in rose growing, this encyclopedic work is probably more than you need. But if you are crazy about roses, you will be crazy about this book.
Review of Modern Roses XI and CD-Rom.......2000-05-16
This edition of Modern Roses takes a giant step up from the last one! (MR10) By including *all* roses that could be reasonably well-documented, the usefulness of this reference has increased dramatically. In addition, the inclusion of a CD-ROM with great search capabilities is FANTASTIC.
Of course... as with any book of this nature... there are still a few errors in description, etc. However, this is very minor, compared to the volume of information contained.
Indispensable reference work for serious rose lovers.

Super book.......2002-03-04
Great reference book! Gives you all the information you need to propagate--nurserymen to laymen.
A book by a pro for the professional propagator.......2002-01-23
I propagated woody plants as a sideline business for a number of years and considered this book THE source. For many species, specific concentrations for rooting hormones are specified. This is invaluable information since for many plants there is an optimal concentration and using a higher or lower concentration of reduces rooting success rates as well as root development.
Michael Dirr is the Absolute Expert in Plant Propagation.......2000-09-03
Dirr has done all the research and you reap all the rewards. His conclusions are backed up by many scientific studies by various individuals and groups. The first part gives a summary of the diferent propagation methods and the second part has very detailed data on specific species. I save hundreds of dollars each year by propagating by own southern magnolias, red tip photinas, and navel oranges. This is, by far, the best book on propagation out there!!
Woody Plant Propagation.......2000-04-19
Uncertain which manual would be best, the reviews on this book were so good that I selected it. I'd have to say it's the best all-around propagation manual I've seen for woody plants. The only problem: now I have not only detailed info on desired plant material, but also want to try SO many others!
This is the best book out there........1999-10-25
This is by far the best book out there on this subject. I have bought all the books on this subject and none can compare to this one. If you only want to buy one book on this subject this is the one.

Customer Reviews:
Gorgeous photographs, excellent information, easy to use.......1998-11-24
This book is a very useful guide to a large variety of Florida plants, as well as a superb collection of truly stunning photographs. It can be used for simple visual identification, but its organization by family and its binomial key make it user-friendly for the botanist as well.

The Story of the Apple
ASIN: 1405139838 |
Book Description
The formation, dispersal and germination of seeds are crucial stages in the life cycles of gymnosperm and angiosperm plants. The unique properties of seeds, particularly their tolerance to desiccation, their mobility, and their ability to schedule their germination to coincide with times when environmental conditions are favorable to their survival as seedlings, have no doubt contributed significantly to the success of seed-bearing plants. Humans are also dependent upon seeds, which constitute the majority of the worldrsquo;s staple foods (e.g., cereals and legumes). Seeds are an excellent system for studying fundamental developmental processes in plant biology, as they develop from a single fertilized zygote into an embryo and endosperm, in association with the surrounding maternal tissues. As genetic and molecular approaches have become increasingly powerful tools for biological research, seeds have become an attractive system in which to study a wide array of metabolic processes and regulatory systems. Seed Development, Dormancy and Germination provides a comprehensive overview of seed biology from the point of view of the developmental and regulatory processes that are involved in the transition from a developing seed through dormancy and into germination and seedling growth. It examines the complexity of the environmental, physiological, molecular and genetic interactions that occur through the life cycle of seeds, along with the concepts and approaches used to analyze seed dormancy and germination behavior. It also identifies the current challenges and remaining questions for future research. The book is directed at plant developmental biologists, geneticists, plant breeders, seed biologists and graduate students.

The New England Wild Flower Society is the oldest plant conservation organization in North America. It celebrated its 100th birthday by publishing this beautiful and useful guide to identifying, growing, and propagating native wildflowers.
Cultivating and appreciating native flora is a first step towards ecological gardening, a concept whose time has come. By choosing to grow the plants that thrive naturally in the conditions your garden offers, you are working with rather than against nature, resulting in easier maintenance and a reduced need of water and chemicals. A great many of the very loveliest flowers are available as natives, such as columbines, iris, trout lilies, violets, trillium, and even orchids. The delicacy of the native species, their simple forms and unadorned beauty, make many of the cultivars we see in the nursery appear overdone and blowzy, like a girl who has overdressed for a party. Horticulturists have worked for years to make new colors, double forms, and larger, brighter flowers, but these small natives have all the appeal of the original, plus they naturally thrive in appropriate conditions.
More than a thousand species of flowers are discussed and pictured, with thorough information on native habitat, cultural requirements, propagation, and design considerations. At the back of the book are lists of plants ideal for specific situations and with certain characteristics; look here to find what species have large leaves or attract butterflies, as well as which do best in dry shade, rocky areas, bogs, and, perhaps most useful of all, which wildflowers are deer-resistant. --Valerie Easton
Book Description
This most complete and authoritative guide to North American wildflowers offers clear and detailed information on growing and propagating 200 genera and 1,000 species of these precious plants. No matter what your level of interest -- whether it is to introduce a few plants into your garden or to learn how to propagate them for yourself or for sales, this book will inspire as well as inform you. With Cullina's guidance, you'll learn in which parts of the continent the plants are found in the wild, and -- even more helpful -- where and how to succeed with them in your own garden wherever you live. As open land disappears, so too do many of the native plants that once flourished on this continent. Gardeners may be their last resort. It is the author's philosophy that a garden is not just an extension of our houses but a habitat we share with plants and the animals that depend on them for food and shelter. He writes: "There is value in preserving wilderness, but there is equal value in restoring the suburbs and cities where most of us live to something closer to balance -- for our children's sake and the sake of all the other species around us. Growing wildflowers is not only fun and easy, it fosters a genuine connection with the region you live in." William Cullina is the nursery manager and propagator for the New England Wild Flower Society, the oldest and one of the most widely known plant conservation organizations in North America. In 2000, the Society celebrated its 100th birthday. In spite of its regional name, their commitment is to the study and protection of all temperate North American native flowers. The Garden in the Woods, in Framingham, Massachusetts, is the popular showcase for the NEWFS. It features naturalistic displays of native plants organized by habitat and includes woodland, bog, meadow, pine barren, western/alpine, and pond side plantings.

A Guide To Wildflowers By A True Expert.......2004-02-02
If you happen to be visiting The Garden in the Woods in Framingham, MA, you will probably notice a man puttering in the gardens or working in the nursery. More than likely he will instinctively know that you have a question about the wildflowers you are examining and he will be more than happy to share his knowledge. This amiable person is William Cullina of the New England Wildflower Society. For those who are unable to visit the garden, or have a question about wildflowers, Cullina's book GROWING AND PROPAGATING WILDFLOWERS is the next best thing. This coffee table style book is filled with lavish photographs and wonderful commentary about many wildflowers found in North America. The book not only assists the reader in identifying various wildflowers, but helps the reader who wishes to incorporate wildflowers in a home garden. Cullina mentions in the introduction that horticulture has been a life long passion. This is evident in his writing style. The information in the book is informative and while it is presented in a formal manner, it is non-threatening for the novice gardener. This work is not helpful just for gardeners. Photographers will appreciate the wonderful shots of the flowers, many of which were photographed by Cullina himself.
Disappointing if you want to cultivate these plants.......2003-01-03
I was under the impression that this book would provide the information I needed to cultivate these plants on some scale. I was very disappointed. There is no way that you could reliably produce these plants with the information provided in this book. There are much better books out there for that purpose. If you are a novice, homegardener wanting to learn about wildflowers and grow a few in your backyard, this book would be okay for you. But if you are knowledgeable on the topic already, I think you will be disappointed.
Great Information, Weak IIlustration.......2002-11-05
This is a wonderful book about the culture and propagation of North American native flowers. The author clearly knows his stuff and communicates it well.
The only weakness is the limited and low quality photography (lots of depth of field problems) which, I gather is not the author's work, but came from a wildflower society. There really are far too few pictures considering the wide variety of plants. Don't plan on being able to tell which of the diverse Eupatoriums or Asters you want to plant by looking at their pictures.
HOWEVER, this book would be worth it without pictures, just for the information. Go buy the book and then write the pubisher a note saying the illustration is beneath the writing....just like I just did.
Cool book.......2002-08-07
This is the best reference I've found for native plants, and it's a worthy book for a coffee table. Accessible and extensive, it's pleasantly written, with care information about the species and then add'l info on specific plants in the species. The photographs are often quite nice, although I wish they more consistently showed the plant's habit in addition to flowers. There's also an appendix in the back on seed propagation.
If you get this, purchase the companion shrub&tree reference, too. It's just as good.
This is the propagation book I've been waiting for!!!.......2000-10-18
I can't add much to Jeremy's marvelous comments; I can only reiterate the praise. This book has the complete, clear, concise and honest information lacking in so many wildflower guides, especially when it comes to propagation. It is apparent that most information comes from the personal experience of the author and I've enjoyed the comments about individual plants. My only suggestion for the next edition would be the addition of photos of the seeds on the plant, especially for species such as Pachysandra, where it is unclear exactly where to look.
Book Description
Acclaimed since its first appearance as the most practical guide to plant tissue culture and widely adopted as a textbook, this standard work is now even better. This expanded edition introduces new developments in biotechnology, such as genetic engineering and cell culture. It provides detailed recipes for propagating plants from more than 30 families. It explains clearly how to set up a propagating laboratory, from a hobbyist's kitchen to an elaborate commercial enterprise.
Customer Reviews:
just what the title says.......2007-05-12
Well laid out, easy to understand for a non-technical person like myself. You do not need a doctorate to use this book successfully.A good basic book for micropropagation.
Introduction.......2007-01-11
I liked the book and I have read most of it twice, The book starts with the basics and and then moves on to the very heart of micropropagation, where it gets hard for me to understand. but if you want to learn about this subject you should get it.
Soon.......2006-09-18
Certainly one of the better books I have read on this subject. Very descriptive and scientific. One downfall to the book and to the whole idea of tissue culture is the massive costs of lab equipment and growing media. Very well written book though, and a good starter book.
The Best curently available.......2000-05-31
This book contains everything that you need to know to start cloneing plants. Some of the material is geared more towards comericial operations but there is a lot for the hobbiest too. I thought that it could have been organized a little better. The authors talk about equipment and media before they go through the cloning process. Parts of it will be boring unless you are planing to actually culture plants. For example there are several step by step lists on how to preform transfers etc.
Perfect for the novice........2000-04-27
For those just starting out, this is as good as it gets. Good for the beginner, but contains information useful to the more experienced. If you get hooked on this hobby, it shows how to set up your own lab without breaking the bank. The bibliography and list of supply sources will let you go as far as you want.

Seeding Made Easy.......2001-07-18
Whether you're a home grower or beginning a commercial/retail greenhouse you'll find this book to be one of the best tools at your disposal. The tabled information is clear, concise, consistantly conveyed, and very easy to understand. Information includes germination temperature, light requirements, grow-on conditions, days to finishing/sales, and much more. I have used this book as my sole reference for production and have had great success, even with the more difficult seeds to germinate.
