5 out of 5 stars An excellent color correction tutorial!.......2007-01-22

I have spent the last two years learning and improving my editing skills, but I have always been a little (a lot) intimidated and in the dark (no pun intended) when it came to color correction. I'm still working in FC Express, and thought that this book may be pointless, since Express lacks many of the tools discussed. But I started reading the color correction section today and have devoured every bit of it. Although I don't have the scopes to work with, I have really appreciated the clear, concise, methodical way that the book explains the concepts and procedures behind color correction. The subject is now demystified for me, and I feel confident in applying what I'm learning to the tools that are available in Express. I will eventually upgrade to Pro and purchase a monitor as well, and when I do, I'll be well prepared to take on the color correction process.

5 out of 5 stars A very good book with helpful hints and tips.......2006-03-22

Now I am an advanced Final Cut Pro user who has made a living with it for going on 5 years now, but still this book gives me new tips and tricks that I hadn't realized, and an excellent section on color correction which is really why I got the book in the first place.

4 out of 5 stars Good for someone, not for me........2006-12-06

I purchased this with the hope that I would be able to use the pictures for discussion about apples with the preschoolers that I teach. The illustrations are wonderful but are truly geared toward an early elementary school level science curriculum. A better choice for my age level children was The Season's of Arnold's Apple Tree by Gail Gibbons in which a little boy interacts with a tree throughout the seasons of the year.

5 out of 5 stars How do Apples Grow?.......2000-08-03

Betsy Maestro has done it again! Her book about how apples grow is both informative and fun to read. Students will be captivated by the story and the pictures. This book is a must have for all classrooms!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall.......2007-01-19

This book takes us through the four seasons of an apple tree, with the great pictures that are always found in Gail Gibbons' books. It's a nice introduction to the seasons for my pre-school grandson.

4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-12-12

This is a wonderful book. It goes through the seasons of the year with the apple tree. There are large illustrations on each page, along with a sentence or two of text. This book is great for those wishing to learn about seasons of the year and also about phases of an apple tree (from buds to blossoms to apples to bare branches and back to buds again). Although I wish that the text had some rhyme or cadence to it, its still a very good book that my daughter asks to have read to her again and again.

3 out of 5 stars Can be used to teach about trees and their seasonal changes........2006-10-12

This book covers the basics of what a tree goes through every season. Arnold and his dog take you through each season and explain what type of activities they do with the tree. Winter they build a fort around the tree for company, summer they build a treehouse, fall they rake and pick apples and in spring they hang out in the tree and smell the apple blowwoms and build a tree swing. Arnold treats the tree as his friend through-out the book. On a few of the pages, there is a recipe for apple pie, directions and explanations of what a cider press is and does and facts about honeybees. My overall impression of the book is that it is an okay book with okay pictures. If it wasn't partially educational, it wouldn't have been rated with 3 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Useful and sweet, although, perhaps, a bit bland.......2006-09-22

I found this to be a very useful book for introducing the concept of seasons to my 5 yr old son. It's beautifully illustrated and the story is quite sweet, although I'm not sure how frequently he will ask to hear it again. It's not likely to end up on his list of favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Teaching the Seasons.......2006-03-20

I recently purchased this book for my kindergartener to do a book project. He needed a book about the seasons, and this one fit perfectly. It simply illustrates and tells what happens to Arnold's apple tree around the year as each season passes.

5 out of 5 stars Apples-Apple Pie.......2007-08-24

Here is another beautifully illustrated book for the young child. I use this in my classroom as we make an apple pie for our cooking experience in the classroom.

4 out of 5 stars MMM mmmm. Time for pie........2004-08-20

When I was a kid I loved loved loved reading picture books that involved apple pies. I didn't particularly care for pie in real life, but on the printed page there was no desert more delectable and delicious to read about than scrumptious nummy buttery apple pie. I had to grow to adulthood before I really grew to appreciate this particular dessert, and I've been devouring them ever since. Looking back, I was also a big fan (when younger) of the beautiful apple blossom. For those of you living in Michigan, the apple blossom is the official state flower (a fact remembered almost entirely by elementary teachers and school children). Looking at Zoe Hall's enjoyable, "The Apple Pie Tree", a book at combines these two long distant loves, I find myself wishing I could have had this book at my disposal when I was a kid. A tale that examines the step-by-step process of how apples grow and are later turned into pies, it effectively conveys seasons, growth cycles, and (literally) the birds and the bees.

The heroine of this story and her baby sister show the viewer the process that goes into making apple pie. In the winter, the apple tree that sits in their backyard is bare and bereft of life. With the advent of Spring, buds turn to leaves and birds build nests in the branches. Spring means baby birds and apple blossoms covered in bees. In the summertime the blossoms become small green apples. We watch as the kids play in the sprinkler and the baby birds fly from the tree. Then, oh joy of joys, the tree is filled with shiny red apples. These are picked, cored, cut, and piled into a pie shell. A sprinkling of cinnamon and sugar on top seals the deal and out of the oven pops a delicious apple pie. And, as our heroine is quick to point out, "There's nothing as good as an apple pie you grew yourself".

For those readers who live in geographic areas that can support apple trees, this might be the perfect book to read before heading out to the nearest orchard and picking a few. Even those who claim to be cuisinely challenged will find the recipe for apple pie in the back of the book a simple process (though I advise you to buy a crust rather than make one, as the book suggests, if you're inexperienced). The back of the book also provides a little more information on how exactly bees turn blossoms into apples. Nothing like a little plant reproduction lesson to sum up a swell story. This book would read especially well in the fall, since that's the time of year the tale ends with. Sadly, the story's art is not particularly exceptional. Using a painted and found-paper collage technique, it gets the message across but doesn't really blow you away. I found myself wishing idly that Lois Ehlert (of "Snowballs" fame) had been placed in charge of the illustrations here. Still, illustrator Shari Halpern does her best and the pictures, while not spectacular, detract from neither the narrative nor the lessons. They're just a bit dull.

This book will not make you crave apple pie if you've never craved it before. And it will not stun you with its brilliance. It's just a nice little story about baking, time, and the circle of life (sans that whole icky death part, of course). If you'd like a colorful picture book for some autumnal reading, this "The Apple Pie Tree" is probably a sure-fire winner. I should mention too, that if you DO happen to enjoy the delightful taste sensation that is apple pie, this book WILL make you crave it. Intensely. Best read with a piece in your hand for easy reference.

4 out of 5 stars The Apple Pie Tree.......2000-09-20

Interested in teaching about plants, the seasons, pollination? Read this book. Along with wonderful pictures, you can branch out into so many different science related topics. The apple tree grows, is pollinated, and finally, in fall, is ready for harvest. This book even includes a recipe for apple pie!

5 out of 5 stars A favorite!.......2000-04-05

This book is a favorite for me and my 3 year old son. We love following the apple tree from winter to fall with the two sisters. They're growing "the best part of apple pie" right in their yard. It's help to teach him about the seasons as well as the process of growing something and the pride in having a hand in creating something. He is enthralled by the collage style illustrations and watching the baby robins grow up in the tree. A recipe for the apple pie is included at the end of the book, but we always use our own. We just bought a second copy of this book to give to my son's preschool library and the teachers and children both were thrilled for the new addition. Sure to be a classic!

Book Description

The master photographer best known for his extensive, insightful documentation of "the American social landscape"--from jazz musicians to factory hands to New York pedestrians and office workers zoning out at their keyboards--has recently been spending more time looking at the literal, natural landscape. His monumental 2005 MoMA retrospective showed, for the first time, a new series of landscapes made in the American West, while for Olives and Apples, he has looked back over the last decade's work and culled a forest, tree by tree. His docile subjects, apple trees photographed in New York State and olive trees photographed in France, Italy and Spain from 1997-2004, are presented in circumstances ranging from sunny, leafy summer health to glittering winter ice-storm glory. Some of the most striking compositions are shot from just inside the reach of a tree's furthest twigs, so that expanding branching limbs fill the frame, stretching out around the viewer.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Late work from a master.......2007-01-11

I'm still thinking about this one.

I'll put the landscapes of Friedlander's "Cherry Blossom Time in Japan" and "Flowers and Trees" up against any landscape pictures ever, for their sweep, their grace, their wholeness.

These pictures are not the same; there is less clarity here, less direction, more crowding, as trees and leaves and branches fill the frame.

Maybe it's switching to a square format camera; maybe it's the subject matter. Whatever, there isn't much peaceful here.

What there is, is the suggestion of a world of infinitely many details, one that you can only get a glimpse of.

This is a more private, more wintery Friedlander. The pictures are richly rewarding, but best viewed after you've seen his earlier works.

5 out of 5 stars Apple Pro Training that Doesn't Disappoint.......2006-09-13

DigitalFilm Tree's text, "Advanced Editing and Finishing Techniques in Final Cut Pro HD", is part of the Apple Pro Training Series--the curriculum for professionals studying to become an Apple Certified Pro. And that makes perfect sense, since the book mimics Apple's famous dedication to user-friendliness. The text is clear and concise, and the pages are filled with full color photos that mirror your computer screen. In fact, the learning process glides so seamlessly that the advanced techniques you learn feel like kid stuff.

You don't just read about how to edit, you cut and modify and apply effects to the footage supplied on the DVD-ROM included with the book. You actually key out a green screen, you actually color correct poorly-lit shots to match, you actually create a piece of music with Soundtrack and animate titles with LiveType. And in the bonus lessons included exclusively on the DVD-ROM, you actually perform a batch reverse telecine with Cinema Tools and output cut lists so that if you ever edit a project that was shot on film, you're fully prepared.

What's more, the book doesn't just teach you the how, it teaches you the why. You don't just learn the 3 way color corrector filter, you learn about the basics of color itself, how the color wheel works, how hue is different than saturation, and what complementary colors are. And then you take this knowledge into various primary and secondary color correction exercises. The book even teaches you how to calibrate your monitor.

Within the steps of the longer lessons, the book also interjects small, time-saving tricks and alternate ways of performing simple tasks. So while you're discovering new and advanced techniques, you're also honing your speed and comfort with the techniques you already know.

Because of its depth of knowledge and superb presentation, "Advanced Editing and Finishing Techniques in Final Cut Pro HD" is an essential book for any self-taught editor wanting to take his or her editing to the next level.

Note the words in the title Advanced Editing. This is a book written by professional video editors for professionals or at least advanced amateurs. This is actually the same as the book Advanced Editing and Finishing Techniques in Final Cut Pro 4. If you purchased the earlier book, you don't need this one.

This book is the official advanced training course for Final Cut Pro HD. It is a detailed guide to advanced editing and finishing techniques using Final Cut Pro, as well as the three programs that come bundled with it: Soundtrack, LiveType and Compressor. The premise of this book is to build upon the base of knowledge that the reader has by providing practical, professional techniques that will be used on a daily basis.

Book Description

Final Cut Pro is a serious tool for serious (usually professional) editors--which means that if you're like most users, you already know the software's interface, are well-versed in editing basics, and are interested in just one thing: going as deep as possible with the software's tools and features. This is the book for you. In Apple Pro Training Series: Advanced Editing and Finishing Techniques in Final Cut Pro 4, the post-production and training company, DigtalFilm Tree, provides step-by-step instruction in all of the tasks real filmmakers are most interested in: using Mattes and filter effects, creating different "film looks," achieving complex transitions, working with video scopes, adjusting contrast, balancing color and luminance, and more.

Each chapter in this self-paced, Apple-authorized guide represents a self-contained lesson--with a project to complete, a review section, and bonus exercises to reinforce what you've learned. The accompanying DVD includes lesson files and all the materials you'll need to complete the book's projects for a comprehensive course in Final Cut Pro.

DigitalFilm Tree is a West Hollywood-based post-production and design house and authorized training center for both Apple and the Motion Picture Editors Guild. The group, which includes members of the original Final Cut Pro design team, began a revolution in the post-production industry by proving that innovative and affordable systems can produce professional results.

For this book, DigitalFilm Tree assembled an unparalleled team of experts, each contributing his or her area of expertise. Join film director and editor Michael Wohl, effects and color correction specialist Andrew Balis, audio pros Martin Sitter and Mary Plummer, type effects wizard Steve Martin, veteran DVD producer Yan Shvalb, and award-winning film editor Daniel Fort as they bring together their decades of experience in this consummate guide to Final Cut Pro's powerful advanced features.

3 out of 5 stars Certainly helped, but don't really have any use for 80% of the material.......2005-07-28

I would reccommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about using special fx, filters, motion, compositing, titles, or "sound track" in final cut pro, but to those who'd rather do all of this in after effects and would like to know more about codecs, HD, workflow, audio mastering, encoding, compressing, formats, and delivery in Final Cut Pro, I'd have to guess that there's probably something better out there. It would be unfair to say that this book ignores these subjects, but it certainly does not concentrate on them. I'm not dissappointed in my purchase for I certainly learned a lot, but I did expect a bit more. Good for what it's worth, but not great.

5 out of 5 stars The answer to every question, "it's in there!".......2004-11-07

I'm sold on the Apple's Pro Training series for Final Cut Pro. Final Cut Pro 4 and Final Cut Pro Advanced, offer training very economically. If you work independently and learn well from text books, these two offer clear instructions that can be trusted and followed with confidence. By following them carefully, I accomplish complicated tasks, such as animating titles, easily. Although, there are a few misplaced characters there aren't any missing words. By following Apple's lesson plan, I learned how to use tools in FCP. Some of them are so clever they're difficult to comprehend. The slip edit tool, for instance, lets you change which portion of the source file will be shown in a clip without lengthening the sequence. It took awhile before I could understood what was going on. It wasn't like anting I'd encountered before. How to operate the levers, buttons, and bells is important but these two books also teach how to make movies. For example, Final Cut Pro 4 describes how to slip the video into synch with the audio tracks rhythm pattern: how to finesse the leopard to move his head at a specific time in the music. After completing many tutorials in these books, I appreciate documentaries more. I've heard it referred to as a mid-range video editor but I can't foresee needing more power to edit my DV. At first I wondered why LiveType came bundled with Final Cut and why it took up so much room on my hd. After building the example projects, in chapters 19 and 20 of Final Cut Pro Advanced, however, I don't care how much room it needs. My motion titles impressed everyone saw them. Even experienced FinalCut Pro users may learn something about LiveType by reading this book. These books cover color correction, working with film, project management, nesting sequences, multi-track trims -- I'm reminded of the jingle about a good spaghetti sauce, the answer to every question, 'it's in there! I'll be using these two books, Final Cut Pro 4 and Final Cut Pro Advanced, for a long time. Tip: The lessons will go smoother if you read ahead.

2 out of 5 stars Problematic..........2004-06-27

I found several mistakes in the book. In one chapter it is recommends that you apply the 3 way color correction filter, when in fact you needed to use the normal color correction filter. I was able to figure out what was actually intended, but it baffles me why Apple as well as Peachpit Press would put out a book like this without a quality assurance check. This was not the only issue with the lessons. In my copy, on lesson 21 it asks you to modify the auxillary 24fps timecode of a clip, but I was unable to do so with the file that was included in the DVD.

If Final Cut Pro was as buggy as this book was, I would have switched over to Premier a long time ago. I am concurrently teaching myself Shake with Apple's Pro Training series for that program and haven't noticed anywhere near the mistakes that I have with this one.

I do have to admit I learned a hell of a lot from this book, WHEN THE LESSONS WORKED, but next time they should have someone do a QA check on the files as well as fact check on the lessons.

BTW, Peachpit has not addressed any of my emails regarding these problems. Not Good!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2004-04-19

A very clear definition of how to do nearly everything in FCP4. Having only the knowledge of how to do a simple cut, I was able to follow the book and understand it. I'm still in high school, so you know if I can do this, you can as well. The book contains with it a DVD that offers 8.3 gigabytes of lessons that you give you all the shots you need, and then you open the book and the book explains what to do with the shots given to you. Depending on your current skill level, you can skip any lessons that you already know. The book does require some knowledge of the interface, like the canvas, viewer, browser, and timeline, and how they all function. I recommend the book to anyone that wants to learn FCP4 very well.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2004-03-21

I only wish I had more time to spend with this book. I am fortunatly busy editing! Everytime I sit down with this thing it changes the way I edit. It is clearly written and takes you through good editing techniques as well as how to use FCP to accomplish them. Best $35 I ever spent.

    Book Description

Written by the author of The Forsyte Saga, Caravan is a collection of 56 short stories composed between the years 1900 and 1923. The Apple Tree comprises the first twenty-four tales of this collection. For the majority of the stories the author grouped works of a similar theme in pairs, one from before 1914, the other written after 1914, in a deliberate attempt to illustrate how his ideas and technique changed over time. The stories themselves encompass a wide range of topics and emotions, from despair and death to salvation and hope, and there is even an appearance by the Forsyte family. Written in Galsworthy's descriptive and engaging manner, this collection is a thought-provoking and entertaining body of work.

This book is worth acquiring if only to read The Apple Tree, a heart-hammeringly tragic romantic story that will lurk in the back of your mind ever after. Poor Megan David -- you must know that someone like her truly existed, and Galsworthy merely happened to be the writer whose imagination brought the tale to us all.
