Book Description

An all-encompassing guide to entertaining, amazing, and possibly even educating children, Be the Coolest Dad on the Block provides the perfect excuse to stand on a balloon, play with grated cheese in the microwave, and unroll an entire roll of toilet paper, all in the name of spending time with your kids.

Written by a comedy writer and a cartoonist with thirty years’ combined experience as dads, Be the Coolest Dad on the Block is a cornucopia of practical parenting advice, like how to skip stones or teach a kid to ride a bike. It has answers to the pesky questions kids love, such as “Why is the sky blue?” or “Where do babies come from?” And it can help dads entertain large groups of kids with slapstick gags (“burp the alphabet”) or cool tricks (“the hole in the head”). Be the Coolest Dad on the Block also contains spooky myths for telling around the campfire and loads of quizzes and jokes for rainy days or endless car rides.

With a range of ideas to suit all situations and sensibilities, Be the Coolest Dad on the Block gives any dad the right stuff to be the wackiest and smartest guy in the room.

5 out of 5 stars Works for anybody, not just dads.......2007-01-30

I bought this after a recommendation on the Cool Tools blog. It seemed like a good way to learn some fun tricks to amuse children and generally be a cool guy.

The book will teach you very quickly how to: perform a variety a simple magic tricks; organize impromptu games requiring little to no materials; build rope swings; identify common trees and plants; answer many of the 'why and how' science and nature questions children ask; bedevil your child with riddles and jokes; occupy your children on car rides; and dozens of other things.

Even if you're not a parent this is a fun book. You can use the ideas when visiting friends and family to become a celebrity among the kids. It's a really fun book, and worth twice what it costs.

4 out of 5 stars Some see as "fun", others see as "essentail".......2007-01-09

Okay, it's not classic literature, but it fills a void which, for some, could be just as important.

This group of "must know topics, skills and abilities" for Dads, could certainly be valuable knowledge for any parent, regardless of gender. As for the value of contents, here's the proof of this kind of book: As mundane as they might appear to adults, the items included in this book are the very things many children will take with them into adulthood as "best memories". What could be better?

5 out of 5 stars A great book!.......2006-08-09

This is a reeeally fun book for all ages. Lots of fun gags and such.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for Dads!.......2006-05-18

I found this book extremely entertaining. Cleverly written and chock full of information, games, puzzles and facts that kept me reading and practicing the long lost art of engaging with and entertaining kids. If you would like to have your children put away the Nintendo in favor of some quality time that you will all enjoy, or if you are not a parent but would love to know the secret behind those magic tricks, pick up "Be The Coolest Dad On The Block".

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate Father's Day gift!.......2006-05-10

This is a very, very funny but also surprisingly useful book on how to entertain and amaze your little monsters. You might want to read it even if you don't have kids, for self-defense material the next time you're stuck in a room with a bored and complaining child. A perfect present for the dads you know (much better than a tie!).

Book Description

In I Love You Like Crazy Cakes, Rose Lewis and Jane Dyer told the heartfelt story of one woman's adoption a baby girl from China. These sentiments are brought to life again in this touching portrait of birthday celebrations and unforgettable moments between a mother and her little girl: from joyous hugs for a new puppy, to quiet nights gazing at the stars remembering a faraway family. Capturing the richness of both Chinese and American cultures, Every Year on Your Birthday is a poignant tribute to the growing bond of love only a parent and child can know.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Perfectly delightful.......2007-08-01

Once again Rose Lewis and Jane Dyer so perfectly captures an extraordinary aspect of childhood...that being a birthday. The book and the experience of reading it will delight any child and any parent. I loved every word and every picture.

5 out of 5 stars Lewis & Dyer's second gift to the adoption community.......2007-07-29

What a joy to open up that Amazon.com box and see the smiling face of Alexandra Mae-Ming Lewis, daughter of Rose Lewis, starring up at me rendered by Jane Dyer in her familiar and much-loved watercolor illustrations. If you and your little ones enjoyed I Love You Like Crazy Cakes (2000), I think you'll want to take a look at Every Year on Your Birthday.

Aimed at children 4-8 years of age, Every Year on Your Birthday is a sweet, simple and lovely book that illustrates, birthday by birthday, how the lives of Rose Lewis and her daughter have proceeded since they first became entwined in a hotel room in China. I think that many who have adopted from China will be able to identify with both the images and the experiences offered up in the book. For example, with my own girls now 4 and 6, I could identify quite completely with lines like "I think about how quickly your gurgles have turned to giggles." And I was equally moved by Jane Dyer's poignant illustrations showing the little one's progression from toddler to little girl; her illustrations could have been watercolor renderings of many of the snapshots awaiting placement in a scrapbook here at our house!

While Jane Dyer's illustrations were probably my favorite part of the book--I love watercolor and will admit to a particular soft spot for her work--I was also very appreciative of the way the book stayed connected to the child's history before her adoption. For instance, one section of the book celebrates the little girl's relationship with her "first friends," her orphanage "sisters" and those who cared for her in the Social Welfare Institute. And, as was the case in Crazy Cakes, the book offers a remembrance of the child's Chinese birth family, using the idea of looking up at the stars as a point of reference for them and a way to send them good wishes.

With Every Year on Your Birthday Rose Lewis and Jane Dyer have given another gift to the adoption community and to those who wish to better understand the experiences of adoptive families. For some, it will be a way to remind a child of the good time spent; for others, it may be used as a springboard for discussions about birth families and a life before adoption. Either way, it is a beautiful, heartfelt addition to the books on adoption from China.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-07-27

This book lacks the emotional connection of 'Crazy Cakes.' Nice illustrations, but the story struggles to find its way forward.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful, Thoughtful Book for Growing Chinese Adoptees.......2007-05-24

I Love You Like Crazy Cakes came out just as I was completing the paperwork for my daughter's adoption, and Every Year on Your Birthday arrived just in time for my daughter's 4th birthday.

When she opened her present, she held up the book and proclaimed, "It's ME!" I can't overemphasize how important seeing other Asian faces is to my daughter-- and our family goes out of its way to ensure that.

The illustrations are beautiful, the sometimes difficult subject matter of orphanage life is treated sensitively, even positively.

I highly recommend this book for Chinese adoptees-- and even other Asian adoptees-- although the content doesn't *quite* match all experiences, it is an excellent starting off point. For example, we talk about what we did on various birthdays, speculate as to how she celebrated her first birthday before she was adopted, how we celebrated her birthdays and GOTCHA days each year. What a wonderful, easy way to begin sometimes difficult conversations.

An excellent addition to any pro-adoption library!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-05-15

I LOVED her first book and couldn't wait to get this one. I Love You Like Crazy Cakes was great because it was generic enough that it could have my daughter's story. This one was too specific so I had a lot of explaining to do after each page. It is a wonderful book for the author's daughter but it is her story not ours. The illustrations are just as wonderful as the first book.

Book Description

When Ernest Hemingway committed suicide in 1961 he left four unfinished works--A Moveable Feast, Islands in the Stream, The Garden of Eden, and an untitled work on his travels in Africa. The edited versions that have come down to readers and scholars of Hemingway appear as distinct, disjointed texts that fit oddly into his oeuvre. Through extensive literary detective work Burwell has uncovered substantial evidence that Hemingway in fact designed the three published works as a trilogy, what she terms "his own Portrait of the Artist."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking Study.......2005-09-28

This is the only in-depth scholarly work extant on the mass of unfinished books Hemingway left behind in 1961. Besides that, it is fluidly written, thoroughly documented, thoughtfully analyzed, and excellent in all respects.

It matters not whether or not the thesis -- that the posthumous works constitute a loose unified work -- holds up. To state it and explore it, as the author does, is to cast a lot of light on the very complex issue of Hemingway's last works and their difficult manuscripts. No one had even gone as far as to lay the groundwork for such a question before Burwell. Indeed it was doubtless necessary to proceed on some sort of hypothesis to go through these widely divergent manuscripts chronologically, as the author does, and to then present a coherent text of her own regarding her studies.

The author also has a great openness and sympathy for Hemingway and his tortured, insistent aestheticism. It shines through the entire work and raises it to a very rare level in modern literary criticism.

A year of Roses is an excellent reference book for rose gardeners of all varieties. The author conveniently breaks the book down in chapters by month. This allows one to quickly reference what should be done at a certain time of year. I read this book one chapter a month over the course of the year and my roses were the beneficiary. It is certain that I will refer back to this book frequently for years to come. I give this book my highest recommendation.

Book Description

Remember the last good party you attended? No, not the office mixer where the chips were served from the bag, you had to mix your own drink, and the conversational topic was the latest child-rearing theory. No, the last good party you attended, the one where there was a theme with real food and yummy drinks and decorations to match and people actually talked to you. That's the kind of party we are talking about. And sadly, that's the kind of party that is harder and harder to find-until now.

Now sorority sisters Kristina "Morgan" Rose and Deandra "Brooksie" Brooks are here with step-by-step party plans, including themes and concepts, decoration designs, menus and recipes, signature cocktails, and tips to make your event the party that everyone's talking about.

With "A Word About" specific issues such as how much alcohol to buy per guest, and humorous quizzes, rants, and Top Ten lists, the only thing more fun than this book is the party you'll be inspired to throw because of it.

Wow. And, thought "growing up" and writing a book on how to create pockets of joy every single day was extending my college giddiness as far as one possibly could!
As the President of Ohio University's Alpha Xi Delta Chapter ('84), I wholeheartedly applaud everything about this book. My book helps women to realize that every day can be a celebration, and Deandra Brooks' book tells them how to do it with style. Perfect.

4 out of 5 stars It's time for a party!.......2006-02-21

As a young professional who enjoys entertaining & misses all of her friends being together all the time, this is a great book! It is full of creative ways to have a great time without digging deep into your pockets. The book is light hearted and can easily be used by anyone, but cherished by the true sorority girls!

5 out of 5 stars Party Planning with Humor!.......2005-12-30

Not only did this book take the stress out of planning any party, but it made me laugh! You can read this for fun, or for planning your latest shindig. I found that the recipes highlighted for the various parties can be mixed and matched for any occasion. Who knew I could throw a party for the Kentucky Derby? The party plans outlined in the book are easy to follow, use easy to find ingredients, and are not expensive to create. Also, the additional commentary, lists and suggestions are helpful in preparation for the party as well as making you laugh! I highly recommend this book for anyone, sorority and non-sorority girls (& guys!) alike!

5 out of 5 stars Like Rush with liquor!.......2005-11-04

I was in a sorority as a collegiate and we threw and attended some great parties in my day. As a result, I knew how to throw a great party and keep with a theme, but had some trouble coming up with ice breakers that weren't cheesy but still managed to help my guests mingle and get to know each other. Thanks to Morgan and Brooksie, I have some great ones now! I especially loved their ideas for the New Year's Martini bash (Happy New Martini!).

5 out of 5 stars What fun!.......2005-04-26

I've never been a big fan of throwing one of those "cool," "chic" parties- I always thought it was too much work... but WOW have these girls made it easy... and fun!! It looks like even a non-sorority "Recovering Sorority Girl" can handle this!!

        Book Description

In 1806 Lt. Louis Garneray's ship was en route to France when it was captured by the Royal Navy. Confined for nine years with hundreds of others in the cramped quarters of a prison ship off Portsmouth, he tells a compelling story in turns violent, poignant, dark, and humorous. Originally published in 1851 in French as Mes Pontons, the memoir is considered to be the most detailed account of shipboard prison life at that time. Translator Richard Rose presents the first full, unabridged English-language version of the classic and draws on extensive research to examine the veracity of the more fanciful elements of the narrative. As an added feature, the book is illustrated with paintings and etchings done by Garneray, who became a distinguished maritime artist later in life. This rare first-person exposé on a little-known facet of the age of sail is a valuable resource and makes fascinating reading. 30 illustrations. 6 x 9 inches.

          Book Description

On a muddy riverbank, a hungry dinosaur stalks her prey. From her hiding place in the nearby trees, she spies a giant, four-legged plant eater. At the right moment, she leaps from the trees and lunges at the slower dinosaur, tearing at its flanks with teeth and sharp claws.

It's an average day in southern Texas, 115 million years ago.

This dinosaur attack happened. We know for certain, because these two animals left their footprints in the mud -- and they're still there, hardened into stone for all to see. Dinosaur Hunt presents this dramatic event and brings the two combatants vividly back to life. It is the tale of a young Acrocanthosaurus, a predatory dinosaur similar to T. rex. As she grows she learns to hide, hunt, and survive in the eat-or-be-eaten age of dinosaurs.

The astounding, lifelike art of Karen Carr transports us to this strange and threatening world and re-creates one of the most gripping tales a few footprints ever told.

          Book Description

Neil Leifer is a master of the art of sports photography. Among his wellknown images is a victorious Muhammad Ali having just defeated Sonny Liston in Lewiston, Maine, considered by many the best sports picture of all time. More than forty-five years after publishing Leifer's first photograph in Sports Illustrated, the current editor assigned him to go on a year-long shooting spree. It was a chance for Leifer to go back in time and shoot many of the same events that he had photographed in the past. The awesome results of his coverage of thirty-two extraordinary events over the course of a year are featured in this captivating book. Included are such exciting events as the World Series, the British Open at St. Andrews, Scotland, the Super Bowl, the Kentucky Derby, the Daytona 500, Wimbledon, and the Tour de France. Supplementing these recent images are vintage pictures from Leifer's archives that illustrate how sports and sports photography have changed over the decades.

Award-winning sportswriter Frank Deford provides a lively, anecdotal introduction commenting on Leifer's artistry, composition, and ability to freeze time in just the right moment. In addition, Leifer contributes a preface providing insight into his remarkable career witnessing the world's greatest sports competitions and also offers introductions to each month's celebrated events.

For anyone who loves sports or great sports photography, this is a must-have book or prized gift.
