greatest landscaping book I've seen so far.......2003-06-23
This is really a great and very comprehensive book, I love it. I saw it the first time in a store and I was really impressed by it, so I decided to look for it on amazon. My favorite part is the different ways shown to incorporate water. Also I liked the thoughtful tips that should be considered when planning a garden, such as a form of privacy around the spa.
Book Description
Stonescaping is one of today's most popular outdoor landscaping design trends. Now homeowners can find a landscape design and project book combined in one with Landscaping with Stone. The first section provides readers with a framework for incorporating stone in their yard designs, including a look at the different types of stone used in landscapes, sources of inspiration, and ways to think about stone in relation to other outdoor elements. The second part of the book provides readers with tips on working with stone, from transporting to cutting and setting. There is also instruction on how to complete some of the most popular stone projects, including patios, walls, and rock gardens.
Customer Reviews:
You'd never know you could do this much with landscaping.......2007-06-25
What beautiful and innovative designs this book has. My husband and I wanted to landscape much of our property with stone. We actually did more than planned because we were so impressed by much of the ideas in this book. A concern of ours was the price. Much of the simpler projects you find you can do yourself (such as the small retaining wall around the garden), which saved on additional labor costs. We were guided which stones to use, and stones that could be found around the property. For the work that was a bit more extensive we called in a professional and showed him from the book what we wanted. He was very much impressed with this book himself.
If you're looking for inspiration, this is it........2007-05-07
Beautiful book, well put together, LOTS of pictures. I especially liked the way the author covered different styles of stonework. I'm not a fan of very formal design and he included examples of more informal, earthy landscaping.
Great pics.......2007-02-03
I love the full color pictures - it gave me all sorts of ideas. I just wished there were a few more pages on "How to do it" I'd recommend this book though for the price - it was awesome.

New Complete Home Landscaping.......2007-01-03
There are some interesting and workable ideas in the book. Before purchasing you might want to check out your local library first. I'm not disappointed with it however I think the layouts are more for the professional landscape/design area. There is even a section for making your own pesticides. It is a nice book to have on hand.
Definitely complete.......2006-05-19
This book touched on all aspects of gardening and landscaping - design elements and plans, water features, walls & fences, gazebos, decks and patios. It offers suggestions on plants and flowers appropriate for specific areas and climates. There is also a section with solutions to common problems. I highly recommend this book. The text gave me a lot of knowledge, while the pictures inspired me to start working on my own yard!

Landscaping aid for central Florida.......2007-05-11
The book I've been looking for. Living in central Florida poses a challenge to landscaping. This book is informative, current and a major help in deciding how to do what you wanted to do with your property. It has become my guide to planning and planting for beauty and value.
I highly recommend this publication.
Southern gardening.......2006-07-26
This was for my daughter, a new resident of Florida. She was very excited about the book and is looking forward to trying out many of the suggestions.
Gardening and Landscaping in Central Florida.......2006-07-08
Being fairly new to Tampa,Fla I needed a book with great color illustrations not black and white hand drawn pictures. This is THE book. The layout, with examples of landscaping and the vivid photos gave me what I has desperately been searching for. Kudos to the author for a sorely needed gardening book for this area.
Well Written, Poor Photography.......2006-06-19
Being new to central Florida, I was really looking for a book that focused on what plants would thrive in this area. Most books are generic to Florida and often feature plants that only grow well in south Florida. "Gardening & Landscaping in Central Florida" fit my need exactly. It is well written and organized. So why didn't I give it 5 stars? Two main reasons. First, the photographs were clearly taken with an early generation digital camera which makes them fuzzy and lacking detail when printed. Overall, the book just doesn't do justice to otherwise well photographed pictures. Second, there are just a handful of pages in the middle of the book that go through a listing of the plants best suited for central Florida. Whle this is great, I walked away feeling the list was bit a skimpy. I've seen many plants at my local garden centers and in landscapes that weren't mentioned. While that doesn't mean those plants are ideal for the area, I think would be worth mentioning some of these other plants and if there are risks planting them. It would be impossible to list every plant available, but I just felt that the listing of plants included in the book is pretty short and more time could have gone into making the listing more comprehensive. So it's still a recommended book, just note these two weaknesses.
Gardening and Landscaping in Central Florida.......2006-05-26
This detailed book unravels the mystery of gardening in a zone that is really hot in the summer, drenched by rain occasionally, often dry, sometimes freezing in winter and has soil that looks nothing like "up North". I found answers for many of my questions, plus photo illustrations that helped me understand concepts in Florida landscaping. I am thrilled with this book, and will be sharing it with my gardening friends. Our next trip to the nursery for plants will be with much more educated minds.

Book Description
Landscape Construction provides detailed instructions for the installation of a majority of landscape elements used today. The text proceeds step-by-step, offering readers a clear, chronological order. First, the construction process is outlined and the pre-construction activities are covered. Then, the steps of site grading, landscape related utility installation building of landscape walls, paving sites, construction of wood improvements, placement of fences and freestanding walls, landscape amenities such as pools, fountains, and site furniture are explained. The text concludes with the installation of plant material and turf areas. Irrigation installation is not included in this text, since that aspect of landscape work has grown into a specialized construction area. An Essential Resource For Landscape Contractors .......2007-06-08
I'm glad I decided to buy this book, despite its high price. Having just recently become a landscape designer/contractor, it proved invaluable many times in the course of our company's first big job. For example, the sections on stone paving were very helpful when we were building a flagstone patio, as they helped us select the best foundation and edging materials.
I like the way the book is arranged, i.e. having a large section on paving, beginning with materials and site preparation for paving in general. This is followed by a chapter on each of the specific paving materials, such as concrete, unit pavers, dry laid stones, mortared paving, and granular paving.
The extensive section on retaining walls, which I am about to take advantage of in our next job, is arranged similarly.
This book is the industry standard. It is used as a text in City College of San Francisco, and it is also listed as a resource in the California Contractor's State License Board's Study Guide for the Landscaping (C-27) License Examination.
So if you want to do landscape construction, I highly recommend this one.
Great Professional Book.......2007-04-10
This book is full of incredible and professional information related to Landscape Construction. It's not meant to be a DIY book you'd get from Home Depot or Lowes. This book is meant for students and professionals wanting to learn best practices regarding Landscape Construction. Amateurs, landscape designers and architects can gain some valuable insights, too. We used this book as our textbook in the various landscape construction classes I took, studying to be a landscape designer.
The Source.......2007-02-13
I found clear concise information on this subject rare until discovered Mr. Sauter's Landscape Construction. There is a host of Better H & G / Sunset books available, but those are really idea/coffee table books written for the weekend warrior. If you really want to know the best-practices and standards for the industry, this is the reference for you. Great for the student and pro alike.
Landscape Construction.......2006-06-29
Just another really expensive textbook with no real information provided. The Better Homes and Garden series has much more how-to information, great photographs, and ten percent of the cost too.
Landscape Construction-David Sauter.......2000-06-19
I found this book to be very thorough and detailed in its approach to a variety of landscape construction issues. It has detailed pictures and diagrams that illustrate the processes and make it easier to understand. The information is up to date, easy to read and a great learning tool for the student, professional or hobby person. As a landscape student, I find it a great resource book.
Customer Reviews:
Best moderately priced plant/garden problem solver book on the market .......2007-08-07
I searched a long long time for a decent, yet reasonably priced problem solving book for plants/gardens. This book had the answers I was looking for; it really is three books in one. There is a section for basic plant maintanence and prevention, problems by plant types (blueberry, apples, roses, exc.), a flow sheet that shows what symptoms will manifest if (leaves, roots, bark, exc.) are being attacked by an invader, and an in depth section on damaging and beneficial creatures (with color photos). This book gives you everything you need to get started and problem solve your plant or garden. A solid book, and a good investment.
Western Garden Problem Solver.......2005-09-09
It is very informative. I'm new to gardening, so this will be a great help to me.
Great book -- puts one's mind at ease.......2002-05-09
This is a must-have book for any gardener or anyone who has the luxury of a gardener, second only to the Sunset Western Garden Book. It is superb at describing and illustrating problems and instructs you on what can be done, if anything. For example, it told us that the sudsy-looking substance on plants was relatively harmless and there is nothing much we can do about it. That put our minds at ease so we can move on to tackle other, more pressing problems. Sunset rules when it comes to their gardening books and their magazine!
Another indespensable book for the western gardener........1998-12-18
This is the best book I've seen on identifying problems in your garden. Clear color pictures make identifying diseases, weeds, insects and other pests easy and it tells you the most benign way to rid your garden of the problem. Insects good for the garden are shown as well, so you know what to kill and what to keep. Several chapters cover how to prevent problems from occuring in the first place. A heavy emphasis on evironmental gardening.

A construction book.......2006-07-27
Great book if you want to know how to build structures like gazebos, walls, fences, pools, ramps, decks, irrigation systems, etc. It shows you the step by step with photos and drawings.
This book is not the right choice if you are looking for plants arrangement.
Great book.......2001-11-14
I am new to landscaping and bought this book because I have a lot of questions. This book gave me a lot of great ideas. If you are new to landscaping you will find it very usefull. Don't hesitate to buy if you are a newbie to landscaping.
A excellent buy; very good structure and content........1999-08-01
This book walks you through the processes of landscaping, from planning to installation, in a very readable, understandable and enjoyable manner. As a landscape designer, I'm always searching for references of any type to use when creating "yard spaces" and presenting those ideas to my customers. With books, I'm usually disappointed either with the graphic and/or written content regarding the details of landscaping, particularly those publications sold at the Home Depots et al. This was different. Technical to the point that's necessary and not too "flowery" in it's narrative, it just provides well written ideas and executions for many landscaping tasks.
The illustrations & photography in many books I've seen work OK but give the books an "old" feel, because, in many cases, they are old in date and style. With few exceptions, the artwork and landscape "styling" in this book appear current and appropriate. That made it a more believable book too.
All said and done, this book is an excellent value for those seeking general-to-semi-technical information for a wide variety of landscaping tasks. With its emphasis on extensive and educated planning, this book is an asset to the homeowner and the landscape professional alike. In my opinion, one of the book's greatest achievements may be that homeowners, after reading it, can decide better whether to tackle a project themselves or work with professionals.

Book Description
Permaculture is a verbal marriage of permanent and agriculture. Australian Bill Mollison pioneered its development. Key features include:
use of compatible perennials;
non-invasive planting techniques;
emphasis on biodiversity;
specifically adaptable to local climate, landscape, and soil conditions;
highly productive output of edibles.
Now, picture your backyard as one incredibly lush garden, filled with edible flowers, bursting with fruit and berries, and carpeted with scented herbs and tangy salad greens. The visual impact is of Monet's palette, a wash of color, texture, and hue. But this is no still life. The flowers nurture endangered pollinators. Bright-featured songbirds feed on abundant berries and gather twigs for their nests.
The plants themselves are grouped in natural communities, where each species plays a role in building soil, deterring pests, storing nutrients, and luring beneficial insects. And finally, you--good ol' homo sapiens--are an integral part of the scene. Your garden tools are resting against a nearby tree, and have a slight patina of rust, because this garden requires so little maintenance. You recline into a hammock to admire your work. You have created a garden paradise.
This is no dream, but rather an ecological garden, which takes the principles of permaculture and applies them on a home-scale. There is nothing technical, intrusive, secretive, or expensive about this form of gardening. All that is required is some botanical knowledge (which is in this book) and a mindset that defines a backyard paradise as something other than a carpet of grass fed by MiracleGro.

Inspiration and the tools to go with it.......2007-09-14
I have totally enjoyed this book. The principles are a little murky because apparently this is a pretty new field and not very well developed for the eastern seabord which I live but it does provide enough guidance to begin setting up your own permaculture areas and start developing areas to be more ecologically sound food producing and living environments. I would HIGHLY recommend it as a first book on permaculture and the resources section alone has been a joy.
Great book.......2007-08-23
I highly recommend this book.
It is a fun place to start, if you wish to create a sustainable garden. All the basics are covered, from grey water, to ponds, to guilds, to forest gardens, and it is enjoyable and easy reading.
Well documented, practical and enticing.......2007-07-24
I bought this book together with Patrick Whitefield's "Permaculture in a Nutshell" and read the latter first, which is a mere introduction compared to Toby Hemenway's "Gaia's Garden". Toby transmits his love for and knowledge of permaculture very well. I am trained as an agricultural engineer and did learn a lot while reading. He first teaches the basics and then rehearses them in the different chapters. The concepts sort of grow and develop while reading, which leaves you with the feeling that you don't have to open the book again to start designing your own garden. Toby's enthusiasm is also tangible and infectious.
The only thing that's missing for me is more examples and better documentation about existing permaculture gardens/farms. My design would be quite different from Toby's (I live in Spain and we have our own favourite mediterranean crops) but the book provides the tools needed to do it your own way and Toby comes over as an open minded teacher.
So good it got stolen........2007-07-22
Sad but true. As a former library worker, I can tell you there is no better praise than when a book gets ripped off.
It is annoying mine was lifted from me but it happened and I am sad; it's a good one.
Thanks for writing it.
Gaia's Garden is a practical guide for transforming yard to Eden.......2007-05-12
This book is a fascinating read, very informative, and approachable for anyone trying out sustainable living, whether experimenting for the first time or with some experience. The author is inspiring and maintains a level of hopefulness not always found in environmental literature. He balances idealism with practicality and treasures the process of growing one's own food and flowers, recognizing that this is a lifelong journey and the gardener is always learning in a dynamic process. I find myself reading a chapter or so and being drawn out into my own yard to putter around with a new idea, then rocking on my front porch while I devour another chapter. This book is life-giving on several levels!
