Book Description
A celebration in words and breathtaking images of thirty-five landscapes created for private clients by today's preeminent designers.
This is a time of renewed originality in garden design. The last twenty years have seen a lucky confluence of money and talent lavished on gardening, and the results are surprising, enchanting, sometimes even controversial. The range of possibilities suggested by these thirty-five gardens is extraordinary: from Jacques Wirtz's undulating beech hedges that recede mysteriously into the mist to Penelope Hobhouse's latest interpretation of the traditional English garden, to Martha Schwartz's Texas creation of red, yellow, and pink painted garden rooms.
These hidden masterworks of modern gardening are unlocked for us by the authority, experience, and resources of House & Garden magazine. Every page is an invitation to explore landscapes that have never before been seen by the publicand may never be seen again. International in scope and lavish in its production, this book is the last word on the state of design in the garden world. 340 color photographs.

Customer Reviews:
Discovering Tuscany.......2007-10-12
This is a lovely "coffee table" book.
I found the information to be extremely general - book does not contain information that cannot be obtained in any take along travel guide such as Foders, Blue Guide, Cadogan, Rough Guide, etc. In addition, this book is NOT a good reference for individuals who travel on a budget. Most accommodations & ristorantes fall into the 4 star range; expensive.
This book is the perfect book for the pretentious American tourist.
Dreaming of Tuscany.......2007-06-07
As a frequent traveler to Tuscany, I find this book one of the best. It reflects the romantic and unique part of the world known as Tuscany. Wonderful coffee table book, resource for Tuscany and reading for rainy days.
Dreaming of Tuscany.......2007-01-15
Since my daughter and I are going to be in Tuscany in the spring, I found the book to be a great resource for the area. I'm looking forward to seeing things firsthand...but so glad that Ms. Ohrbach has done the groundwork for us...a much more efficient use of our limited time there!

Love this book.......2007-10-01
Love, love, love this book. I garden nowhere near the same amount, but I am in zone 6 too -- so the advice is spot on for me.
Great reference - great gift.......2007-07-05
I really appreciated the extensive research the author did for each section - she separates the folklore from the things that have been tested and documented, but presents both. I also like the suggestions and options she gives...if you want to follow a pre-designed plan you may, or you can pull together your own combinations that appeal to you or that work better for your situation. I have read my own copy cover to cover many times and have given this book as a gift to several like minded people. The two aspects of her system that really appeal to me are the reduction in weeding and the principle of "no sprays"...I really disklike the idea of putting poison on my food!
This is the book you want.......2007-06-27
Perfect. I've looked at a number of books on companion gardening and this is the one I'd recommend. Friendly, easy to read with nice illustrations and photographs. This is a book written by a woman who loves gardening for people who love gardening.
Great book for the organic home gardener!.......2007-06-06
I read this book from cover to cover. The author's style of writing is conversational and very easy to read. I bought a couple of other organic gardening books but I liked this one the best. Her love of nature and plants really comes across. I understand now how the balance in nature takes care of pests with some planning from us. She shares a lot of really good, easy-to-do tips on how to garden organically. I've implemented many of her ideas in my own garden and can see them working already. Most of all, this book has made me aware of how important the insects and bugs in my garden really are. I recommend this book to anyone who really wants to garden organically.
How does common sense get published?.......2007-05-24
Great Garden Companions may be a suitable book for some, but I found it very disappointing. The book is aimed toward a very general audience--one without an organic gardening, scientific or ecological background--and is consequently dumbed down, brief and incomplete. The title is misleading, and really just seems like an excuse for the author to talk about her own garden (and which plants she likes to put together, seemingly on a whim). It should be marketed as a gardening journal or introduction to organic gardening for kids, if anything.
Hardly any useful information about companion planting is found in this book--what little exists is there without any sort of explanation or reference. Even common information about well-researched companion plants is missing. The book is, instead, about which plants look nice planted together, have been grown together for centuries, or allow you to conveniently pick crops. The author provides detailed information about which plants she likes to group together in her own garden, including planting maps, but never explains why. It is a book littered with old wives' tales and inaccurate and unresearched information, with just a little bit of useful information that is generalized and brief. And then a bunch of other stuff that has nothing to do with companion planting, which may actually prove useful if you've never read a decent gardening book before.
The book itself is rather poorly written and targeted toward the lowest common denominator of gardeners, but the photographs are nice and the author's practical, organic and naturalistic approach are right on. The book stresses ecological balance within the garden, but doesn't include much information outside of the realm of common sense and common knowledge, and I expect more out of a book.

This answers everything from selecting a plant to pests and problems.
Buy only a used book.......2005-11-05
I bought this book through the mail and I wont tell you how much I spent on it. It really does have some interesting facts. A lot of repetitive ideas that can be confusing some times. Some of the tonics and things that I tried made my garden worse. In fact, it burnt some of my plants to the ground! Some of his recipes are confusing. Such as: he recommeds everything in this 20 gallon hose end sprayer. I went to many garden centers and everyone laughed at me. Nobody carries anything that large. that is for a garden the size of Texas! Who are these people that the tonics worked for? Come to my house and help me, then.

This is a wonderful and practical book. I tried two of the receipes in the book and had instant improvement in the appearance of my indoor and outdoor plants. I will be getting several copies for my gardening friends and family.

Customer Reviews:
A VOLUME TO SAVOR AND RETURN TO AGAIN AND AGAIN.......2006-12-07
The ideal garden we are given to understand is a paradise - "a haven of comfort, abundance, and beauty." Many of us try to achieve that paradigm in our own way, as have countless others before us. Now gathered in one gorgeous volume are the results of those endeavors gleaned from diverse cultures and climes.
We begin our armchair tour with "Gardens Through the Centuries," a journey covering four thousand years beginning with the earliest gardens alive in the deserts of the Middle East. The first Mughal Emperor Babur (1483 - 1530) had a number of gardens including the Garden of Fidelity which was divided into four parts with a central pool.
Of course, the gardens designed in China and Japan expressed a respect for nature, evidenced in vast areas where the placement of each stone had meaning. Places for contemplation, stroll and moss gardens were found in Japan.
For this reader what can compare with the gardens of Italy? Hadrian's Villa near Tivoli boasts open porticoes, enclosed atriums, fountains, basins, statuary. It is a wonder. La Mortola on the Italian Riviera is a place for dreaming with a steep slope to the sea rich in agaves, aloes, white roses, salvias and citrus trees. A virtual Eden on earth.
Ms. Hobhouse continues our tour with a look at modern garden design as represented by such designers as Roberto Burle Marx, Fernando Caruncho, and Beth Chatto.
"In Search of Paradise" holds 240 pages and 200 illustrations all in glorious color contributed by the world's foremost garden photographers.
The is a volume to be savored and returned to again and again.

Jeff Cox provides the information new gardeners want in Perennial All-Stars: how to produce a garden full of healthy, attractive, low-maintenance plants. Cox, the enthusiastic host of HGTV's &Grow It!, has selected 150 perennials, both flowers and grasses, that grow well in North American climates. Each double-page plant entry tells how and where to grow the plant, how to propagate it, and a list of ideal planting partners. In addition, each entry displays a quick-glance sidebar that includes ideal hardiness zones, blooming season, size, color, light and soil requirements, and a substantial list of plant sources (detailed in the back of the book). Cox further assists the beginning garden planner with useful groupings: "Fragrant All-Stars," "Deer-Resistant All- Stars," "All-Stars for Full Shade," "All-Stars 4 Feet or Taller," and so forth. It's in no way intended to replace a complete plant encyclopedia, but novices will be happy with the excellent selection and informative, friendly format of Perennial All-Stars. --Barrie Trinkle
Book Description
No longer must you waste your time or money browsing catalogs or wandering the aisles of your local garden center. How often have you ended up with perennials that dont live up to the breathtaking photos that convinced you to buy the plants in the first place? Garden expert and HGTV host Jeff Cox takes the guesswork out of shopping for perennials by selecting 150 of the most beautiful, top-performing plants based on attributes such as bloom time, ease of care, disease resistance, and fall color. A Perennial Plant Finder helps you find the ideal plants for your garden whether you live in Palm Springs or Portland. Youll also find suggestions for hard-to-plant conditions like heavy shade with acid soil or drought-prone gardens with alkaline soil. This all-star lineup is pictured in 260 full-color photographs that show each plant plus how each looks in garden combinations with other great plants.
Customer Reviews:
great for gardeners.......2007-05-17
I am really enjoying this book. It has given me a lot of good ideas for my garden this summer. I already have some of the flowers it lists, and I agree they are winners. An excellent book for beginning and experienced gardeners looking for new flowers for their yard.
One of the best !!.......2007-02-26
My wife wore out her 1st copy and the yard looks great.
A great reference.......2007-01-11
Keep this book on your counter all spring and summer long - you'll find lots of reasons to refer to it.
Handy reference book to have around.......2006-11-04
Great for the beginner gardener, it's easy to understand and gives a lot of information on planning your perrennial gardens to look great from early spring right into the fall.
Inspiring and informative.......2006-08-19
Many of my gardening books are useful for referencing the occasional problem or plant profile, but "Perennial All-Stars" was an engrossing read from cover-to-cover. The author has a great deal of enthusiasm for his subject--so much so that I think he picked more than 10 'Top 10' perennials out of his favorite 150.
That's okay. I admire his devotion and his knowledge of the perennial flower kingdom. His 150 all-stars also purport to be easy to grow and maintain, which is what I was looking for when I decided to add to my garden this fall. Unfortunately the author was so persuasive, I'm going to have to dig a new bed to fit in all of my choices from his book.
If you have a rough idea of the plant you're searching for, the front of this book is cross-indexed by various perennial characteristics such as 'spring blooming,' 'deer-resistant,' and 'full shade.'
Each of the perennials that was chosen for this book, is described in the following sections: an overall description and photograph of the plant; how to grow it; propagating the plant (useful especially for the more expensive or hard-to-find perennials); the right site for growing the plant; and other plants that go well with it. A 'spotlight' section summarizes the USDA plant hardiness zones, season of bloom, height x width, color, light requirements, soil requirements, place of origin, and where the perennial and/or its seed can be purchased.
The author tried to choose perennials that would flourish in all of the U.S. hardiness zones, but there are some exceptions that can't take the heat and humidity of the Deep South, e.g. peonies, or won't live through a very cold winter, e.g. Broadleaved Bear's-Breech.
"All-Star Perennials" is very useful and interesting. Just plan on doing some digging when you do read it.

Book Description
Finally, for every resident and visitor to the region, a comprehensive guide to the gardens of eastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey, and northern Delaware. Magnificently illustrated with nearly 200 full color photographs, A Guide to the Great Gardens of the Philadelphia Region provides essential information on how to locate and enjoy the finest gardens the area has to offer.
As the horticultural epicenter of the United States, Philadelphia and the surrounding towns, suburbs, and countryside are blessed with more public gardens in a concentrated area than almost any other region in the world. Stretching from Trenton, New Jersey through Philadelphia and down to Newark, Delaware, this area (often called the Delaware Valley) offers more horticultural riches than a visitor can possibly see even in a couple of weeks of hectic garden hopping.
In A Guide to the Great Gardens of the Philadelphia Region you will find:
- detailed coverage of almost 100 gardens;
- maps to indicate where area gardens are in relation to each other to plan day trip itineraries;
- key information about each major garden, including hours, fees, time needed for a tour, history, acreage, and special features;
- over a dozen gardens that have never before been featured in any garden guidebook;
- arranged by interest, to help guide readers to gardens that will most meet their needs;
- notations about historical houses, cafes/restaurants, gift shops, and children's features at each major garden
Customer Reviews:
Well-designed and quick reference to many Philly gardens.......2007-03-04
The publishing of this book coincides with the 2007 Annual Philadelphia Flower Show. It covers roughly 40 or so of the major public gardens in the Philadelphia area.
Nice design by Philadelphia firm of Joel Katz who have formatted the information in a user-friendly layout. Maps, color coding and tabs make it very easy to locate specific gardens.
The photographs by Rob Cardillo are beautiful and, even at their small size, capture the gardens at their peak.
Adam Levine's brief descriptions and histories of each garden are succint without being overly dry.
My one disappointment is that, with the exception of the Azalea Gardens by the Art Museum, the Japanese House, and the West Laurel Hill Cemetery, and a brief description of the Horticultural Center, the authors do not detail the scope, history, and hidden gems of the Fairmount Park system.
Granted, and due to the state of upkeep, the park may no longer be called "great." But the park is still the "lungs of the city" and has its surprises: The miraculous row of dozens of cherry trees that create a wonderful pink line towards the Japanese House every Spring, and the natural walking and bike paths that surround the Horticultural Center are just a couple of these "secret" gems.
At a time when Philadelphians are talking of creating new green areas, Fairmount Park deserves our attention, our love, and our care.
Overall, a very good guide to Philadelphia garden treasures for visitors and locals alike.

Beautifully photographed, well written. Will be appreciated by those who have visited these houses as well as those who enjoy fine architecture and interesting history.
Makes you want to go see them for yourself!.......2006-07-04
If you love historical architecture, and the histories of old homes, then you shouldn't miss this book. The photographs alone make this a book worth owning, but the author has also included well written, indepth, and informative stories about these incrediable homes, their builders, owners and subsiquent owners. Reading this book has encouraged me to plan a trip to visit to the Hudson River Valley to see these beautiful places for myself.
Mansions For Miles.......2005-05-19
This is a nice overview of the best of the estates along the Hudson. The book give a nice short history on the houses presented and the photos are nice, though the pictures could be more crisp. Having said that, I did enjoy the book and was just amazed at the variety in the styles of the houses from period to period; really a very informative book. If you are interested in this sort of thing, then you will certainly be pleased with this book, though the $50.00 price tag is a bit daunting.
Hudson River Mansions.......2002-04-27
This book is fantasic! I highly recommend it. It has loads of spectacular color photographs, and the mansions are breath taking. Being someone who has never visisted the area, this book really makes me consider a trip to New York, if only to see these mansions.

Book Description
An evocation of the British garden past, present, and future, A Gardener's Labyrinth celebrates 50 visionary gardeners and their glorious gardens. Illustrated with outstanding images by acclaimed photographer Tessa Traeger, the book reveals a history of gardens from tiny city allotments to country estates and formality to wilderness, as seen through the eyes of those who have shaped them. Whether as designers or writers, horticulturists or conservationists, explorers or scholars, all have enriched and furthered the tradition of gardening. Patrick Kinmonth unravels the principles and philosophies that have informed the gardeners' work and explores new directions for gardens of the future. A brief biography of each gardener completes this elegant book, designed by Stephen Gan of Visionaire magazine.
Customer Reviews:
A celebration of great English gardeners.......2004-01-14
Fifty great gardeners are profiled here in this beautiful coffee table book. Chapters are divided as "The Garden Proposed," "The Garden Described," "The Garden Planted," "The Garden Preserved," and "The Garden Explored." A four or five page essay accompanies each portrait in which the gardener discusses various aspects of their career, their philosophy of gardening, inspiration, opinions on design, or the making of their own personal garden. A portrait of the gardener and photos of their gardens are included. The photographs are by Tessa Traeger (renowed for her work in British Vogue) and they are simply outstanding.
The gardeners included are Andy Goldsworthy, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Charles Jencks, Kim Wilkie, Penelope Hobhouse, John Brookes, Arabella Lennox-Boyd, Mary Keen, Dan Pearson, Julian and Isabel Bannerman, Roy Strong and Julia Trevelyan Oman, Bob Flowerdew, Robin Lane Fox, Anne Scott-James, Pamela Schwerdt and Sibylle Dreutzberger, Graham Stuart Thomas, Anna Pavord, David Wheeler, Andrew Lawson, Tony Lord, David Hessayon, Geoff Stokes, Valerie Finnis, Carol Klein, Christopher Lloyd and Fergus Garrett, Beth Chatto, Keith Wiley, Alan Bloom, David Austin, Joy Larkcom, Jackie and Alan Gear, Mike Snowden, Miriam Rothschild, John Sales, Marchioness of Salisbury, Xa Tollemache, Robin Compton, Angelika Cawdor, Gilly Drummond, Martin Puddle, Beth Rothschild, Brian Mathew, Roy Lancaster, Christopher Brickell, James Compton, Nigel Marshall, Barry Unwin, Ghillean Prance, and Tim Smit. Biographies on each gardener are included at the back of the book.
Only one complaint - the unconventional size of the book (15 inches wide!) makes it awkward and impossible to look at comfortably (the only good way is to lay it flat on a table). Still, this shouldn't deter the gardening enthusiast. This is an exceptionally beautiful book and comes in an equally nice slipcase.
