Geek Pool Book.......2007-09-09
We bought a house with an inground pool 5 years ago. A bit of a surprise really. We had ZERO experience with pools, and knew only by rumor that we were buying something that required a LOT of care and maintenance. I hunted through bookstores for a guide I could learn from. I am a technical writer by profession, so I know a thing or two about how to present complex ideas to the innocent. Browsing through this volume I was impressed with the author's skill at getting ideas across (well structure informattion - here's the idea, heres' the basics, here's the gory details). I bought it on the strength of his organization and writing, not on the content (about which I knew zilch).
It is still in regular use 5 years later. YES, it is technical. YES, it sometimes provides way too much information for the novice. But if you have a brain and you can handle some complexity, this book is BRILLIANT. I knew nothing, and in very short order I learned what I needed for basic care. This book is a bible for pool maintenance. Over the years I've learned (from experience guided by this book) how to strip a DE filter, how to repair my Polaris pool robot, and more about water chemistry than I ever thought possible. This past summer ('07) it guided us through a plaster refinishing (pool is ~30 years old) and taught me how to restart the pool.
It IS written by a pool professional, FOR pool professionals, and even has advice on how to run a pool maintenance business (which is of zero interest to me). But if you can learn from a pro talking to other pros, this book is it.
The "Haynes" manual for pools.......2006-11-10
This book is to swimming pools what the "Haynes" car maintenance manuals are to your car. It contains all the information required to maintain your pool, even though probably someone else is going to do it for you. If you own a pool, it is worth reading the book to understand what the service technician should and shouldn't be doing, and when the pool is in need of help. It can also help you save some money by doing the work yourself. The book is entirely about maintaining a pool, not owning one. It is written in a friendly, readable style, and you can simply keep it as a reference manual to know what to do when things go wrong. If you are considering installing a pool or spa, this book will show you what you are letting yourself in for. If there is one omission in the text it is that the author ignores electric pool cleaning robots, though they are probably the most effective way of keeping the pool clean.
Save your Money.......2006-04-24
This book was a wasste of time and money. The book focuses more on being a pool professional then the actual "how-to" a pool owner needs to work on their pool. It has more information on changing a light fixtures and on bilking wealthy Malibu folks out of cash then actual useful information.
After reading this (useless!) book I went to my local library and reearched several books on the subject, there is a title called "What color is your pool?" That has lots of information for the first time pool owner. There may be other more technical guides our there, but this book has few drawings and illustrations, poor writing, and ultimately is lacking in adequate information.
Trust me...SAVE YOUR MONEY!
Helpful Tool.......2005-08-26
This book is a helpful tool for any pool owner or someone interested in having a pool.
NOT the best book to buy........2005-05-15
This is my first Amazon review, but I feel compelled to share this experience with others.
This book as said to be for the professional and the novice. It was said to contain all the information one could possibly need. It was suggested that you could take what you want from the weighty tome, and leave the rest. In reality the book is clearly NOT written for a new pool owner. In fact, its not written for an experience pool owner. The book was written for a pool repairman. Moreover, it does not contain the practicle information a pool professoinal would require to steer clients toward pool products.
Which cleaner should you get- Vacume or pressure driven? No answer here. What about a heating- Solar, oil, gas? No advice, no direction....
In fact, the book reads more like the diary of a pool man. About how one manufacurer was driven out of business by refusing to compromise quality, or how he cared for the pool of come Malibu celebrity.
Having recently purchased a home with an in-ground pool, I have read three books so far, and gotten quite and education. This book however failed in almost every regard. Finnally, the book deliniates ways of making money of customers as a pool professional. Information I simply have no use for.
Lastly, it bears mentioning that there is a quote on the book jacket from another Amazon reviewer "If you want to buy one book on swimming pools this is it!" Why not a quote from a noted pool authority or publication? Why quote some anonymous amzazon.com user like you or me? Most likely because there were no favorable reviews from newspapers or magazines.
This book was more then a waste of 30 dollars. It was also a waste of time. Unless you need to know how to change things like light fixtures in to pool. The book is not awful, so I gave it 2 stars, but I urge you to look elsewhere.

Needs more specifics.......2007-07-13
I liked the idea pictures in this book, but ultimately the "how-to's" left me wanting for more. I didn't feel it went into enough detail of things such as, how to make the rocks look natural and how to place them on the rubber liner so they don't wash away immediately. A good idea book, though.
Major waterfalls.......2007-06-26
This was a good book if you are going big time waterfalls. I was looking for something a little bit simpler.
GREAT PURCHASE AND VERY HELPFUL.......2007-01-10
THIS IS THE BOOK YOU NEED IF YOU ARE GOING TO CONSTRUCT A WATERFALL ETC. PACKED FULL OF USEFUL INFORMATION. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Most complete and detailed book for creating Ponds and Streams.......2006-06-12
Good book. Pictures are good and the descriptions and details from the creation of Ponds, Streams and Waterfalls is the most complete of all the books that I have purchased or read. It could do a little better job of describing how to integrate a Bog Garden with a Pond. I still have questions about that.
Overall the best of the breed.

Great Ideas.......2006-11-03
The book was great for visualizing what we wanted and to convey that to our landscape architect. It also provided good information regarding care of a pondless waterfall.
Fairly detailed.......2006-03-07
This book isnt overly long and filled with over the top water gardening items most people cant afford. The applications discussed a common and to the point. The
contenet isnt bad for a beginning pond builder but you can gather most information from the book from websites online like pondmegastore or lilypons.
Beginners & Novices go ahead.
Ortho's Building Ponds.......2005-09-07
Gives how to, how much, where and why. Probably the best pond construction book I bought.
Great Teaching Tool.......2005-05-21
Great book to learn about building water gardens. Excellent resource and I would highly recommend it.
GREAT STARTER.......2005-03-16
This book is excellent for the price and with a handyman mentallity you might be able to figure our the blind spots yourself and commence your pond.

Zillions of Pictures.......2007-06-08
This is a great book for pool ideas. It contains ideas for just about every kind of pool and there are lots (350, at least) of photographs. This is just what I was looking for since we are planning to put a pool in our yard and it's a blank slate. This books is great for those without a lot of imagination, like me.
More pictures than you can shake a stick at!.......2006-05-02
I looked through lots of pool idea books in my local book store and none of them had as many pictures as this book. There are a few pages of text in each chapter, but the bulk of this book is 4 (or so) pictures per page which is exactly what I wanted in an idea book. I recommend highly.
Excellent Buy.......2004-06-15
This book has a great variety of pool designs from contemporary to rustic designs. Fabulous book with alot of great pictures.

Ponds.......2007-01-22
This book is applies to northern ponds more than southern ponds. We do not ice over nor do we put trout in our ponds because of the warm waters. It is a good book for what it applies to.
Earth Ponds: The Country Pond Maker's Guide to Building, Maintenance and Restoration .......2006-03-18
i was looking for a book to help me design and build a pond, this book was more of a story, with a few helpful idea's.
Earth Ponds.......2005-09-17
I was looking for more techinical and not so wordy reading. It was interesting reading in a Walden's Pond sort of way. I want to build a pond myself and have the equipment to do it. But wanted to know How the big boys do it.
Lots of Prose......No nuts and bolts........2002-09-13
All those pages, all those words............yet if you are looking to satiate an appetite for information that will allow the building and managing of a pond...you will go hungry.
It's an average book for an average day for an average consumer, but not for construction or problem solution.
I will sell my copy or leave it as a "coffee table" book.
Sorry, but I made a bad purchase choice.
For serious pond builders.......2002-02-08
I bought this book for my husband, who has been planning the restoration for our 4+ acre pond. Many books on ponds seem to be focused on smaller water gardens, not on sizeable wetlands. This is the first truly helpful resource book that he's found. The author writes from the perspective of a conservationist, but his passion for what he's doing comes across as poetic. Extremely helpful guide for facts, resources, and the issues/challenges you're likely to encounter, as well as key environmental considerations.

Coffee Table ho-hum.......2007-01-18
While the book is titled The Swimming Pool, I think it is more about the "outdoor room" The "Classic" pools are still more lavish than will be helpful to the average pool owner. A good book to use for a few weeks from your public library.
Pool Owner [...]
More Than Just Beautiful Photographs of Pools.......2006-06-18
Martha Baker's THE SWIMMING POOL is a coffee table book of some of the most beautiful pool around the world, but it is much more than that. Written with an easy style but always a poignant conciseness that makes every paragraph count, this book gives visual and conceptual ideas for creating the home swimming pool.
Baker is careful not to just limit the text and photographs to the water container in which the swimming takes place: Baker gives as much attention to the logistics of pool layout, landscaping, lighting, and vantage points that make the pool an integral part of the landscape and garden.
Whether the reader is actually planning the addition of a swimming pool to the home, or is more interested in viewing the myriad possibilities of adding water to the garden, this book is an elegant and satisfying resource - as well as a beautifully designed art piece! Grady Harp, June 06

Pools that belong on the Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.......2005-09-01
I am so disappointed that I wasted my money on this book. I had hoped for the amount of money spent that it would have had practical ideas for how to landscape around an average pool. Unfortunately, it is more of a coffee table book that shows glamourous pictures of pools from international locations. The majority of the landscaping tips it does give cover extravagant and costly enhancements and not anything that someone with a normal budget could afford. For an average pool owner, with an average pool, this book does not give any practical advice whatsoever. Furthermore, in the opening pages of the book the author cautions against buying a kidney-shaped pool because she feels they are old-fashioned and reminiscent of the 50's and 60's. To me, it seemed very pretentious to say. We have a kidney-shaped pool and it's absolutely beautiful, as are other kidney-shaped pools I've seen. If you're looking for a book where you can "ooh and ahhh" over the pictures... this one is it. If you're looking for a practical book to help you landscape around your pool, please save your money.

Customer Reviews:
Coffee Table Book.......2006-11-06
I purchased this book to get an idea of infinity pool designs. Really it's more of a coffee table book. The pictures are beautiful, but it's very difficult to really assess what the pools look like as the pictures are more artistic than technical. The photo assignment for this book must've been a blast as the pictures are from luxury locations around the world.
Beautiful Book of Striking Pools.......2006-10-01
Infinity pools, sometimes called infinity edge pool is a pool that has one or more edges of the book being submerged below water level so that the water surface merges with the horizon, providing the illusion of an infinite plane. As seen in this book this effect is particularly impressive when the invisible edge is set against a larger body of wter such as the ocean, or perched on an elevated so that the sky becomes the backdrop.
This is an expensive pool, with the requirement for a trench to collect the water escaping over the submerged edge and then for a pump that will recirculate the water into the main pool. But when it is done correctly by skilled designers and contractors, the result is often stunning.
This book pictures and describes thirty houses from literally around the world that incorporate infinity pools into their design. The book is beautifully photographed and printed and will serve as an idea book for architects and their customers.
