Throughout their history, the American Indians have healed with rituals using herbs, fungi, and other natural materials. They have valued as sacred the spiritual side of life and their connection to the earth. Their medicine has always been holistic, treating the body and spirit as one and illness as a sign of imbalance. Now we can benefit from American Indian wisdom with American Indian Healing Arts: Herbs, Rituals, and Remedies for Every Season of Life. This book is organized by the stages of life, presenting different tribal perspectives on the significance of each, with ceremonies and healing rituals (songs, prayers, botanicals). The book includes more than 60 recipes for treating health problems and other needs, from "cramp bark tea" to "marigold-calendula deodorant cream." There are also directions for making tonics, ointments, tooth powders, and digestive remedies, and illustrations consisting of leaf-rubbings of 80 plants. Besides learning to use American Indian remedies, you learn fascinating facts about their ceremonies. The Navajo celebrate not only birth, but the infant's first smile and first laugh, for example. An Apache girl celebrates first menstruation by running and dancing for four days (guided and massaged by an elder woman). If you're interested in alternative healing, or intrigued by American Indian culture, this book will add to your knowledge. --Joan Price
Book Description
American Indian Healing Arts is a magical blend of plant lore, history, and living tradition that draws on a lifetime of study with native healers by herbalist and ethnobotanist E. Barrie Kavasch.
Here are the time-honored tribal rituals performed to promote good health, heal illness, and bring mind and spirit into harmony with nature. Here also are dozens of safe, effective earth remedies--many of which are now being confirmed by modern research.
Each chapter introduces a new stage in the life cycle, from the delightful Navajo First Smile Ceremony (welcoming a new baby) to the Apache Sunrise Ceremony (celebrating puberty) to the Seminole Old People's Dance.
At the heart of the book are more than sixty easy-to-use herbal remedies--including soothing rubs for baby, a yucca face mask for troubled skin, relaxing teas, massage oils, natural insect repellents, and fragrant smudge sticks. There are also guidelines for assembling a basic American Indian medicine chest.

TOO VAGUE.......2005-08-19
I found this book to lack depth and explanation. It vaguely lists certain herbs and plants that are of a healing nature, but the true content I was looking for was not here. I wanted more in-depth remedies for particular ailments, where this book applies certain remedies to a very hazy and small range of problems. I was also looking for a guide to ritualistic traditions rather than unmeasurable herbal concoctions.
Review fraud.......2004-12-14
The Institute for American Indian Studies did not review this book. The attributed review originated with the author.
A Gift.......2001-11-25
I've always had the fantasy of becoming an apprentice to a gifted Native American medicine woman--that is until reading "American Indian Healing Arts" by E. Barrie Kavasch and Karen Baar, when my fantasy became a reality. This book is rich with history, accurate herbal information, great medicinal recipes presented in an easy to follow format. "American Indian Healing Arts" is wonderfully reflective of Native American spiritual practices especially in its attention to rites of passage and stages of life. The tender manner with which the information is presented is welcoming, encouraging, inclusive and heartwarming--bound to lead many an apprentice down the path of pursuing greater understanding of Native American medicine.
A Guide to Exploring our Native Cultures.......2001-08-12
I found this book exciting to read. It is filled with traditions of Native Americans and gives us recipes for herbs and rituals to try. If you are looking to expand your knowledge of American Indial Healing Arts, this is the book to help you on your way.
A great read, although not very practical.......2000-08-24
This book has beautiful artwork both inside and out. What I liked the most were the different prayers and rituals that are described in rich detail. I found that if you do not have direct knowledge of herbs and how to identify and obtain them, that this book will not be of much use to you.
Book Description
Richard Alan Miller has thoroughly researched the historical use, chemical structure, preparation for consumption, and magical rituals related to narcotic, hallucinogenic, stimulant, and depressant herbs. He explains how these natural substances can be used for the enhancement of sexuality, muscle relaxation and massage, initiation, spiritual growth, and astral projection.
Provides a fascinating study of nineteen herbs that not only stimulate our energies, but also combat fatigue, assist healing, and relieve tension.
Customer Reviews:
Magic herbal ride!.......2004-01-16
This fascinating book investigates the habitat, cultivation, historical use, chemical structure and benefits of nineteen psycho-active herbs. These plants are discussed by chapter in the following categories: Stimulants (including Damiana, Passionflower and Guarana), Depressants (including Lobelia, Skullcap and Valerian), Narcotics (Wild Lettuce and Wormwood), Hallucinogens (including Kava Kava, Yohimbe, Amanita Muscaria, Morning Glory Seed and Psilocybe Mushroom). Their preparation, ritual use, primary effects and potential hazards are described in detail.
Some of the benefits that may be derived from the wise use of these plants include stress relief (Kava Kava and Valerian Root), increased energy (Guarana), restful sleep and cleansing (Wormwood) and spiritual development (Fly Agaric, Psilocybe). The author writes with great authority, effortlessly blending scientific and esoteric knowledge. I enjoyed his no-nonsense factual approach. The book includes a Quick Reference Chart, a Bibliography and a Chemistry, Botanics/Organic and General Index, making it a valuable reference work in addition to a fascinating read.
Very Cool.......2003-04-18
This book is a great all around kind of reference book. Covering a wild variety of plants it includes lots of interesting details such as traditional preparation and chemical structure for active ingredients. Highly recommended.
A well written resource on some of the more potent herbs.......2000-12-06
One in the series of books by Richard Alan Miller. (The others being "Magical and Ritual use of Perfumes" with Iona Miller, and "magical and Ritual Use of Aphrodisiacs") This book is a typical example of the attention to detail, clarity of writing, and concise nature that I have come to expect from the author.
Covering some of the more Pharmocologically active herbs, the coverage is complete enough for my friends in the medical feilds, without losing readers with less chemistry knowledge (like me). There are diagrams of the active chemical compounds, when known, and lots of details about growth and habitat, but the directions and hazards of use are clear enough for a novice.
While not covering the more common herbs, such as Rosemary, or sage, this book is a valued part of my herbal library. I sincerely hope that the author writes a more wide ranging book on herbs in the future! Definately worth every penny.
Informative and clearly written and well organized........1999-06-09
This book is very informative, clearly written and well organized. One must have knowledge of wild crafting (plant gathering) and a pretty good knowledge of chemistry to take full advantage of what it has offer. It provides excellent and concise information on herbal effect and very clear warnings. Some good recipes also.
Book Description
Healing with Herbs and Rituals is an herbal remedy-based understanding of curanderismo and the practice of yerberas, or herbalists, as found in the American Southwest and northern Mexico.
Part One, "Folk Healers and Folk Healing," focuses on individual healers and their procedures. Part Two, "Green Medicine: Traditional Mexican-American Herbs and Remedies," details traditional Mexican-American herbs and cures. These remedies are the product of centuries of experience in Mexico, heavily influenced by the Moors, Judeo-Christians, and Aztecs, and include everyday items such as lemon, egg, fire, aromatic oil, and prepared water. Symbolic objects such as keys, candles, brooms, and Trouble Dolls are also used.
Dedicated, in part, to curanderos throughout Mexico and the American Southwest, Healing with Herbs and Rituals shows us these practitioners are humble, sincere people who have given themselves to improving lives for many decades. Today's holistic health movement has rediscovered the timeless merits of the curanderos' uses of medicinal plants, rituals, and practical advice.
Healing with Herbs and Rituals is an herbal remedy-based understanding of curanderismo and the practice of herbalists as found in the American Southwest and northern Mexico.
Book Description
Herbal Rituals is about connecting with Nature and the plant world in order to keep us near to the ground of our own souls. The book records, month by month, a yearlong journey in to the earth's natural cycle. Each monthly section describes a facet of the earth's temperament, offering us an opportunity to immerse ourselves in Nature's unique expression of birth, growth, fruition, decay, death and regeneration, the primary cycle that weaves a thread of continuance through our lives. Even in an urban environment, the constant presence of the elemental natural world and the use of herbs can be a touchstone to bring both body and soul back to a natural cadence. Each monthly chapter discusses one herb in detail - what it's like, how it grows, what it does - as well as presenting recipes for teas, lotions and foods, along with rituals appropriate to the season that can bring your life into harmony with the moods of nature.
For thousands of years, humans have used herbs and trees for just this kind of medicine, in addition to calling on the plants as a source of nutrition, remedy, heating, shelter and magic. These are the old ways.

Practical and Precious.......2004-09-15
Susun Weed herself gave a beautiful review on the back cover of this book. I take her advice and keep this book with me. It goes on walks in the woods with me, it rests on my night table, it even bathes with me. If you are seeking a wise guide to living the old and wild way then you have found it. Buy this book as quick as you can, you will not regret it. It's a rare thing, these kinds of books.
Perfection on paper.......2004-09-08
This book will become your best friend. You are invited to experience a journey filled with herbal allies just waiting to make your aquaintence. I first encountered this book at a wonderful little shop in AnnArbor Michigan and was unable to put it down even though I really wasn't able to afford it at the time. I went ahead and spent what little money I had left and have never been dissapointed.
BUY ME.......2004-09-03
This book is fantastic. It takes the reader on a years journey through some simple herbs that really help to bring beauty into your life. I cant believe anyone would sell their copy.
A Beautiful Escape.......2004-01-04
Herbal rituals is a wonderfull invitation to experience simple herbs in an inspiring way. Reading this book I am taken away to the places the author decribes at the begining of the chapters. Following each chapter introduction there is a wealth of wisdom helping the reader to grow closer to the green friends of the earth. I rate this book on equal foting with Susun Weed's Healing Wise. Truly a valueable addition to any wisewomans library. Blessed Be.
At once practical and soul-filling........2003-11-19
Arwen Nightstar (whose review is below) gave me this book, and I'll be forever grateful. I think enough of it to have bought copies for numerous friends.
It's a lot more than just an introduction to the medicinal uses of several of the more versatile plants, though it's certainly that -- Berger is a fine herbalist and, what's rarer in modern herbal writers, an excellent and patient naturalist. It's also a hymn to Mama Earth in all her beauty, power and practical wisdom, and Berger's a real find as a writer (though to be picky, the book does need some editing for grammar). Her evocations of a Brooklyn childhood are especially fine.
The title is misleading; there's not much ritual here in the usual sense, so if you're looking for an herbal spellbook, this isn't it. But if you love the natural world and its cycles, or just love unusually strong writing, buy this book -- but buy several copies, because I can just about promise you're going
to want 'em for friends.

Book Description

Charming and Informative.......2000-04-10
I found this book to be both charming and informative. Having become interested in the whole idea of home spas and aromatherapy to soothe away the stress of everyday living, the ideas in this little book are refreshing ways to reach for peacefulness. The illustrations are pleasant and add to the relaxing, calming effect of the subject of the bath. This book is a great gift idea for friends to share.
Simplistic, yet informative.......2000-03-26
Hayden's writing style follows an easy-to-read format that is rather refreshing, for she still manages to provide a wealth of information. What I truly enjoyed was how whimsical the content and artwork is. If seeking a light but valuable bath book, one to be read in one sitting, this is for you!
