pretty good book.......2007-01-10
Good beginning and ending. Kind of lost me in the middle. A bit touchy, feelie.
A good basic Introduction to TCM.......2006-11-10
For anyone looking for a basic, easy to understand introduction to the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, I can highly recommend this book. It focuses mainly of the five element theory of TCM, and it manages to explain a very complex concept in clear terms. It has nice self-test chapters to help the reader figure out their own predominant elements, and also offers good advice on simple herbal supplements and dietary advise based on the patterns.
However, it is very basic. If you are looking for more in-depth information on Traditional Chinese Medicine, or if you already have a basic understanding of the five elements, The Web that Has No Weaver is probably a better book to read, since it explains not only the five elements, but also the organ networks and their associated functions and spirits in much more depth.
I usually recommend Between Heaven and Earth to people who want to gain a basic understanding and introduction into the Chinese Taoist Philosophy that is the basis of Traditional Chinese Medicine. I think it is a great introductory text, and will make subsequent, more complexly written books much easier to understand.
The book is a mish mosh.......2006-09-06
It's too bad this book is a mish mosh and that neophytes in Chinese medicine are not going to know this. Some of the material is very standard and authentic, but a lot of it is the authors' own invention. So be careful with this. If you want the real deal, this is not the book you want. A better introduction to standard Chinese medicine is Kaptchuk's classic, The Web That Has No Weaver.
Excellent Guide to the Novice.......2005-10-04
I am a novice in the art of TCM and I do not speak or read chinese. This was an excellent guide for me in my studies in preparation to attend school for TCM and also how to get some practical benefit from my Chinese herbs. This was an Excellent Guide for the Novice.
An excellent introduction to the tenets of TCM.......2005-08-10
I recommend this book to all of my clients! With so much focus being placed on alternative therapies in health care, it staggers me that so much of the general public still thinks that acupuncture is for idiots acting as a human pincushion. While it is far from an instruction manual (which was never its intent), Between Heaven and Earth gives laypeople a simplified and elegant explanation of an ancient science. If you're looking for a definitive education in TCM, go to a university and get a degree. If you want an introduction to wellness through Chinese Medicine, read this book.

Customer Reviews:
A lovely book.......2006-02-23
I was very pleased when I received this book. It has a very good breath of information on herbs within it.
A brief chapter on the medicinal properties and actions of herbs, with multiple examples of herbs in each category, is followed by a good materia medica. It only covers 160-170 herbs, and so is not the most comprehensive one available, but each entry is a very good mix of modern medical and traditional herbal details: the part(s) used, taste/smell, "tendencies" (e.g. cooling/drying), dosage, mental picture and specific indications.
There are good size sections on herbal formulae for different conditions (mentioning both appropriate adjunct therapies and any cautions that should be observed) and also on how to make different herbal preparations. There are even a few small chapters on dosages.
All in all, a very good buy !
Herbal Medicine from the Heart of the Earth.......2003-11-25
As a busy naturopathic physician who sees a wide range of patients, I found Dr. Tilgner's book invaluable in researching effective formulas.
Combining both Western and Traditional Chinese Medicine perspectives, Herbal Medicine will be useful to traditional herbalists as well as TCM practitioners.
This would be a primary reference book for conventional medical offices who seek to work with their patients using natural therapies.
But Herbal Medicine is not just for the professional. Dr. Tilgner's straight-forward writing style makes the book easy to use for those new to herbal remedies. Instructions on how and when to take, and not take, the herbs are clear and meet high standards for safe use.
The directions for concocting and using formulas are concise. And I know from using them in my practice, the formulas are extremely effective.
The section on making tinctures, salves, teas and capsules provides clear instructions and information for either creating your own remedies at home, or working in an herbal pharmacy.
If you have to get one book on herbal medicine, this is it! No one who uses natural medicine should be without Herbal Medicine from the Heart of the Earth.
It just as appropriate on the bookshelf of any family or individual interested in safe and effective self-care as it is in the office of a professional health care provider.
Book Description
It costs a lot of money to build a well in Africa - a lot more than Ryan Hreljac had thought. Still, the six year old kept doing chores around his parents' house, even after he learned it could take him years to earn enough money. Then a friend of the family wrote an article in the local newspaper about Ryan's wish to build a well to supply people with safe, clean water. Before long, ripples of goodwill began spreading. People started sending money to help pay for Ryan's well. Ryan was interviewed on television. He appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, twice. His dream of a well became an international news story. In Agweo, Uganda, villagers were used to walking a long way every day in search of water. What they found was often brown and smelly and made a lot of people sick. But when Ryan's well was built, life in the village changed for the better. A young orphan named Akana Jimmy longed for a chance to thank Ryan in person for this gift of life - clean water. When they finally meet, an unbreakable bond unites these boys from very different backgrounds, and a long and sometimes life-threatening journey begins. Ryan and Jimmy is a true story of friendship and compassion in which a simple wish to help others brings focus to the necessities that unite us all.

Action.......2007-05-29
Every person - child or adult - should read this book. Ryan is the perfect example of someone who saw a need and took action. As a teacher at an International Baccalaureate - Primary Years Programme, this book stands side-by-side with the profiles and attitudes of a reflective learner.
A much needed resource for a shrinking planet.......2007-02-28
The story begins with a teacher telling her classroom of young children about the plight of children in Africa who are without clean drinking water. A boy saves up money from household chores to help. But the book is far more than just a story about bringing a well to an African village. There are enough twists and turns in the plot to keep everyone on the edge of their seat. Not only do Ugandan children drink unclean/unsafe water, but their very lives are at stake because of roving bands of kidnapped children who were forced to become soldiers. A thoroughly engrossing book suitable for classroom read-aloud time.

Two Pagan Subjects Merged into an Excellent Craft-Book= .......2006-12-18
I like Druidry and i like Herbcraft. So, when i read this book ,it was a wonderful surprise. As expected ,it's a specialised reading, for those of us in the Craft. So,if you do not like druidism, yet enjoy studying about pagan use of herbs, you may be only half satisfied.Or if you enjoy Druid rituals, minus the natural herb aspect, you might be turned-off .I guess anyway.Yet,you may learn something about the complete Druid experience. The synergy of these two distinct subjects into one cohesive book,is an excellent united topic to explore.I gave this book the full five Druid stars.Enjoy!
Good starter resource on Druidism.......2006-12-10
This is a good primer and starting place for anyone interested in delving deeper into Druid lore and thought, as well as some of the larger pagan spiritual traditions that were active around that same time. Definitely a breath of fresh air from valentines day and labor day celebrations.
Useful, Informative, Fun and Reverent.......2006-10-13
I just got this book last summer, long after it was originally written, so though I am a johnny-come-lately to this work, that doesn't diminish my appreciation for it. The cover shows a lovely woman with braided ribbons in her plaited hair, and on further refection I feel this is a perfect image to symbolize the book, as it weaves in lore, medicinal herb information and homeopathic information on the same entry. It's well organized around the Wheel of the Year, each holiday being a chapter, plus one on The Herbs of the Druids. Cross references to an herbs original placement reduce repitition and make the book clear and very accessible. This book is most definitely is part of my permanent collection of "the lore".
Dawn Killen-Courtney, author of The Trollton Chronicles fantasy series.
A great book by a respected elder.......2006-09-30
Hopman is one of the most respected elders of the Druid community. This book is packed with information on various herbs and their corelation to Druidry. It weaves the herbs to and through the druidic holidays and other correspondances. It's an attractively presented book for the Druid who is yet a novice to herbcraft.
Necessary Reference for Neopagans Across the Board.......2006-09-16
I enjoyed this book and will be using it undoubtedly as I prepare for each season and seasonal holiday- or any other rite of passage I may be involved in! It is well written and organized, divided into sections by holiday or specific rite of passage, allowing the reader to use it as a valuable reference. My only complaint with this book was that the section actually describing how to make salves and tinctures, ect, was quite brief, although it did seem useable. I just wish a little bit more detail was used there to assist the reader in utilizing this beautiful book just a little bit more!

An Herbal Book by an Actual Clinical Herbalist.......2007-04-24
Alan Tillotson is an experienced herbalist and independent thinker whose One Earth Herbal Sourcebook is useful for professionals and educated consumers alike. Trained extensively in Traditional Ayurvedic Medicine in Nepal, Tillotson draws upon a sophisticated herbal repertoire in dealing with MS, opthalmologic conditions, hepatitis C, diabetes and allergic rhinitis. He uses the best of Chinese, Ayurvedic and western herbs in protocols that are practical and effective. Written with humor and intelligence, the book is over 600 pages of useful herbal and nutritional advice. This is one of the better books of herbal medicine I own.

By far the most scientific based compilation of information on herbology. Dr. Tillotson provides clear, organized information in a systems based format. As an osteopathic physician I highly recommend this source to all medical professionals interested in integrated western and eastern approaches to health and disease.
The One Earth Herbal Sourcebook by Tillotson.......2004-04-23

This juice fights against cancer, arthritis, heart disease, back
pain, fibromyalgia, fungal infections and immune disorders.
There is a National Nutritional Foods Association which watches
herbal preparations and animal byproducts containing minerals.
Herbal preparations require comprehensive disclosure as to
contraindications. Natural blood thinners are kale, parsley,
spinach etc. Thyroid herbs are betal leaf, coleus root, lemon balm leaf and root bark. Antimicrobials reduce bacteria.
An example would be oregano. Dandelion leaf stimulates the
production of urine. This work is an important compendium
on herbal preparations, their benefits, contraindications
and use in the context of alternative/complementary medicine
and conventional medicine. The book is a worthy purchase
for a wide constituency of health buffs.

Customer Reviews:
A great help in taking power back into our own hands.......2004-01-31
The Shakers movement started in the United States with the arrival of nine believers from England in 1774 with the purpose of increasing the work of God and establishing the Millennial Church. They established a large number of villages, many of which have died out, some have been preserved as museums and two continue to operate as active communities. Devoted to creating a more perfect spiritual heaven on earth, the isolated communities with mills, factories, meeting houses and farms offered men and women a secure home where they could perfect their talents for a higher purpose. They were entrepreneurs with an ability to understand trends that allowed them to provide quality goods at competitive prices, one of which was the seed, herb and herbal remedy business - the subject of this book. We are told that: "Every commune, to prosper, must be founded, so far as its industry goes, on agriculture. Only the simple labors and manners of a farming people can hold a community together." Their goal was to live separately from the world and to be self-sufficient, which in turn dictated their land acquisition policy and the establishment of the herb trade that was one of their most successful financial endeavors. Everything made or sold had to be perfect and "The Shakers' seeds and herbs gave the members a reputation as excellent horticulturists. Eventually they mass-produced these products for sale throughout the World, and their businesses evolved and lasted into the twentieth century."
The Shaker physicians were excellent botanists to select the correct plants, understand soil types, weather, pests and when to harvest. To avoid mixing, they collected only one variety of plant at a time, at the peak of its growth, and only the part that was needed. Flowers were taken at their first opening after the dew had evaporated but before the day grew too hot. Great vigilance was required as the gardeners were competing with birds and other wild life. As the demand for their products increased, sales expanded beyond the local area, capitalizing on the need for large quantities of pure, conveniently packaged herbs for the pharmaceutical trade. To meet demand they planted gardens, growing plants under carefully controlled conditions. "For vegetables such as squash, cucumbers and melons, the Shakers cut the pulp out of the skins and put the meat into barrels to ferment. They stirred the mixture for about five days. When the seeds sank to the bottom of the barrels, they rinsed them in sieves. After the seeds dried, the Shakers packaged them for sale." Early in the year hot beds were filled with dung ready for spring planting. By the 1830s they had published their first catalogue offering 137 herbs for sale, followed in 1843 with the Gardeners' Manual with instructions to purchasers for growing their seeds. It is from these records that we have been provided with a book of great knowledge and accumulated wisdom.
Chapter 5 is "Persevering Faithfulness: Creating Your Shaker Herb Garden" with details of a herb tea garden with 18 teas, a culinary herb garden with 23 herbs, a medical herb garden with 25 herbs, a flowering herb garden with 20 herbs, and a fragrant herb garden with 21 herbs. There is information on preparing the soil, starting seed indoors, dividing plants, hot beds, transplanting, starting seed outdoors, cultivation, mulches, pest control, harvesting, storing and preparing the garden for winter. Other chapters tell us about the Shakers' medical practices, cosmetics, dyes and other household uses for herbs. The Shakers' agrarian lifestyle supported their large communities and fitted well with their belief in "hands to work, and hearts to God". Throughout the Shakers' history, their lands supported a variety of profitable enterprises. Today, the benefits of creating a well-kept, healthy garden are still as numerous as they were 100 years ago.
This book is an excellent gift for the avid gardener, a useful guide for those not making full use of the garden space and an excellent reference for those who are considering using their surplus ground to start a small business. The Shakers developed a tremendous amount of valuable expertise that is contained in this book. Their business declined as the big seed companies moved in with more sophisticated advertising and promotion. Today, when our choice of seed varieties is much reduced, when the big seed companies have wrested too much power and impose upon us genetically modified crops, the Shakers would undoubtedly have provided a welcome alternative today. This book is a great help in taking back some of that power into our own hands.

Product Description
From one of America's most sensitive and fervent nature writers comes this classic of herbal lore and legend, new in paperback. This is not strictly a gardening book (although there is plenty for the gardener to learn in it), but a singular example of a man thinking about what he grows not only how it grows, but its roots in religion, the Bible, history and medicine. The book was written at Chimney Farm, the Maine homestead immortalized in Northern Farm to which he repaired in 1931 with his wife Elizabeth Coatsworth, and where he died in 1968.
Beston described his efforts as "part garden book, part musing study of our relation to nature through the oldest group of plants known to gardeners." But, as Roger Swain observes in his moving introduction, "Herbs and the Earth has an intensity that evokes the herbs themselves, as if, pressed between the pages, their aroma has seeped into the pages." The book is lovingly illustrated with the woodcuts of the great American stone cutter/letter designer/craftsman John Howard Benson.
