Book Description

reaking the Limit is one woman's account of riding her motorcycle from New Jersey to Alaska and back. Realizing that years of work and travel in other people's countries made her a stranger in her own, and with an invitation to meet her biological father for the first time, Karen Larsen set out on a fifteen-thousand-mile trip with nothing but her motorcycle and the barest of essentials. Larsen's journey tests the limits of her own endurance, challenges her long-held beliefs and values, and asks what it means to belong to a family. Through the the fields of Iowa and the deserts of the Southwest, over the Rockies and across Alaska's Kenai Peninsula, Larsen confronts questions of femininity, family, independence, and personal identity. Her journey speaks to the immense space and over-whelming beauty of North America, as well as to the diversity and vitality of the people she meets along the way. Breaking the Limit invites you to join her as she braces against the wind, trades security for freedom, sacrifices stability for motion, and opens herself up to the vast canopy of a continent.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing endurance.......2007-07-01

What an incredible read by an amazing woman. The book is intelligently written, including bits of history in her descriptions of areas traveled and her encounters with strangers. I also ride a "SPORTY" and men are amazed that I have ridden over 10,000 miles on it, much less a "short distance" trip of 450 miles in one day. I am in complete awe that this women did it on a model that was not rubber mounted as is mine. Have shared excerpts with my husband and he is interested in reading the book also. And being the man that he is, knowing I would enjoy a solo/soul searching journey of travel, encouraged me by stating he would "hold down the fort" so I could have a similar but shorter experience. Definitely recommend this to all women who ride.

5 out of 5 stars To the Point.......2006-07-21

Don't waste your time reading this review ... man or woman, find and devour it as I did.

5 out of 5 stars A book to relate to.......2006-06-19

Breaking Limit was an awsome book to read. She describes her trip where you can feel your there. Having family that have gone to Alaska and being adopted myself, I was able to relate to what she was feeling on her trip. I myself ride a bike and Karen's bike from what my husband says would be a hard trip that long and that far.Karen gives an amazing travel journal with the roads she chose and gives someone the ideas of what to expect on a bike trip.My husband enjoyed the book aswell.Any bike rider would enjoy it and relate to it. Ladie riders it will give you the confidence and encouragement that us gals can travel and do it.

5 out of 5 stars A Story for Everyone.......2005-05-09

This book is about life on and off a motorcycle - a book for everyone.

I just purchased by tenth copy to give to a friend. If you ride a bike you'll love it; if you dont't you'll still love it! I started the book about nine o'clock one evening and just kept on reading until I finished the story.

Karen Larsen uses a ride from New Jersey to Alaska and back to review her life and project her future; you can join her and live your own adventure as you pour through the pages. You can laugh with her, cry with her and come away in awe of the world in which we live - if you liked Pirsig you'll love Larsen.

5 out of 5 stars Great journey, great adventure, great book.......2005-01-03

If you liked Robyn Davidson's book, Tracks, you will like this book. In my opinion this is a great adventure book, a great feminists book and a great travel book. It is about one woman's two-wheeled trip from New Jersey to California to Alaska and return on a motorcycle. One her journey she met fellow travelers (including bicyclists like me,) local folks and her birth family. Larsen is an excellent writer and her trip, like all good journeys, led her to a lot of self-revelations. If you can't make the journey yourself you should at least read the book. It is a great trip!

4 out of 5 stars Good- But...........2007-04-03

This book is very informative, but a lot of the book deals with how the sinuses work, and how they are subject to irritation. While this is not bad information, it is dealt with too often. I basically wanted this book for relief of my problems, and in that respect, it is quite thorough. However, just skim through the first few chapters to get ideas about correcting your sinus problems.

5 out of 5 stars Followup Q&A with Josephson.......2007-03-08

This book is approachable by a layperson and which covers most of what a sinus sufferer should know before seeking treatment. It provides a good overview of the anatomy, a brief description of surgical evaluation and intervention, and detailed descriptions of medications and recommended lifestyle adjustments

I'm a patient of Dr. Josephson and he strongly encourages patients to read this book so I read it. Before reading my review, I recommend you first read the best review I could find, written by Walt Ballenberger who is founder of PostNasalDrip, "a resource web site for sinusitis sufferers like himself". You can find the review at the following links: [..] Ballenberger's review identified a number of questions which were unanswered in his book. By talking with Josephson in person, I was able to get answers for some of them.

LASER
The book doesn't explain the tradeoffs of laser vs. traditional cutting instruments. Before Josephson, I saw an ENT who recommended laser to lightly cauterize the turbinates in order to reduce their tendency to swell when inflamed (the scarification reduces the membrane's elasticity). Dr Josephson is not a proponent of laser except in certain cases. Although a laser is self-cauterizing and therefore reduces bleeding, it causes heat damage to surrounding tissue (more than the damage caused by a cutting instrument) and instrument setup adds time/cost to the procedure. Only where the decrease in bleeding outweighs these costs is use of a laser justified (e.g. when the patient has many small polyps). I didn't ask him but I'd imagine that the thermal heat injury would likely cause more damage to mucus-producing goblet cells and mucus-transporting cilia cells than cutting tools.

SINUPLASTY
This book doesn't explain the tradeoffs of sinuplasty® vs. traditional cutting instruments. Sinuplasty® is a proprietary tool made by Acclarent which uses a thin balloon similar to an angioplasty balloon to open the sinus passages. As in heart vessels, the balloon is placed into position and inflated, then deflated and removed. According to Acclarent's description, this results in permanent widening of the critical areas leading into the sinuses while leaving the nose lining unharmed rather than destructing this lining as occurs in typical sinus surgery. I would have to imagine that if the pressure applied expands bone than it certainly will crush the membranes and must do some damage to them and the cilia which are so necessary to remove the infection and mucus (mucociliary clearance) which is the whole basis by which the sinuses protect you. When I asked Dr. Josephson about what the pressure does to the membranes he said that he knew of no studies that showed what the effect of the balloons on the membranes and cilia were. It turns out that Dr. Josephson is trained in sinuplasty but relies almost exclusively on FESS (endoscopic cutting instruments, as described in his book). He pointed out that unlike angioplasty, which operates on only soft tissue and requires a stent to hold open the expanded tissue, sinuplasty expands a passageway or sinus by dilating bony openings and pathways--widening one passageway by crushing an adjacent sinus cavity. He speculates that such pressure fractured cells could result in a problem later such as mucocele formation--the procedure was too recently developed and long term studies were not available. In addition, while sinuplasty can open up a closed frontal, maxillary, or sphenoid sinus, it cannot open up the labyrinth of the ethmoid sinus. If the ethmoids are closed, functional FESS may be required in conjunction.

FUNCTIONAL ENDOSCOPIC SINUS SURGERY (FESS)
Josephson doesn't much describe his surgical techniques in this book, which makes it difficult to compare FESS with alternative approaches. Dr Josephson says Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) uses microcutting instruments to remove bony partitions and to widen openings into the frontal, maxillary and sphenoid sinus when necessary. I asked how he expands the passages to closed sinus cavities. He explained that, in my case, he would remove the wall between the passage to a frontal sinus and an adjacent ethmoid sinus cell (rather than crushing the ethmoid cell as in sinuplasty). This would be more controlled than expanding a balloon (as in sinuplasty) and avoid creating a new closed cell which could become a cyst. While FESS changes the connectivity of the cavities, it avoids potentially closing off the adjacent cells. He claims that research shows that mucus transport from the now-opened frontal sinus to the ostiomeatal complex is preserved with this method. This book should include and expand on these descriptions. I also asked in what cases the membranes grow back which seems important when polyps are removed from sinus cells, leaving bare bone walls. He replied that they quickly grow back. This book should include pointers to research validating this claim.

SINUS ANATOMY
This book describes the sinuses as cavities which clean and humidify inhaled air. However, the diagrams show the sinuses as dead-end spaces off the primary airway connected only by tiny passages. Why does air travel through them except a small amt via turbulence? Although I suspect they do indeed clean and humidify inhaled air, it would be helpful to me if the book resolved this seeming contradiction.

CAT SCANS
The book includes a series of diagrams showing an idealized representation of the sinuses and other organs. I found it very difficult to relate my CT scans to these idealized diagrams even though I'm quite good at 3D visualization. It would be helpful if this book included a link to an online series of example CAT scans with annotation explaining what's what, how the structures relate to disease symptoms, and (assuming some patents get post-operative CT scans) what the structures look like after surgery. Josephson told me that he had a CT review in a draft of the book and Penguin Publishers needed to make the book shorter and insisted that he cut it out. Eventually he plans to put it on line.

Overall, an excellent book and highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars finnally a book that works.......2007-03-08

Sinus Relief mow is the most comprehensive book i have read on the subject. It is the first book that links Sinus Problems,Allergies,ASTHMA,SLeep Apnea, and Gerd (gastroesophageal reflux) i suffer from most of these problems and have been treated for years by many different physicians. And no one has made these connections which Dr Jordan S Josephson makes. He is brilliant and i am living what he describes. I am using his book asc a feference and have been following his five step program. I am already seeing a difference. I like the fact that DR Josephson combines the best from traditional and alternative medicine to bring relief for these problems If you suffer from any of these problems this book would be the best investment that you can make. It has many tips that woll help you with your problems. I am going to actually make an appointment to see DR Josephson. I like the wat he thinks. It makes sense.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful advice.......2007-03-05

In the interests of full disclosure, I should reveal that I am a patient of Dr. Josephson's. In fact, he recently performed a FESS procedure on my sinuses.
It needs to be noted that Dr. Josephson practices what he preaches. Before we arrived at the decision to perform the surgery, I followed each of his recommendations, including a long use of antibiotics, smoking cessation, the use of an air purifier and a humidifier, etc., etc. Only after these actions failed to result in a "cure" for my sinus problems did he recommend surgery. True to his word in the book, post-surgery did not require packing and I hope that the procedure will result in long-term improvement. In the meantime, I constantly refer to Dr. Josephson's clear and coherent book to guide my treatment.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a formula that works.......2007-03-02

This book is a God-send for sinus suffers. The regime it recommends works as advertised. I can attest to this--I have suffered from sinus problems all my life. The 5 step solution recommended by Dr. Josephson REALLY works. Sinus irrigation for example has made a huge difference in the quality of my life. The power of this book is that is does not over-simplify. Sinus problems originate from a range of complex problems and these need to be understood. What this book does well is break down the solution into pieces the average person can understand and implement.

Book Description

For over three thousand years practitioners of Chinese medicine have known that food is health-giving. Now path-breaking nutritionist Linda Prout synthesizes the basic principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with the science of western nutrition. With a clear focus to help readers achieve balance, Prout introduces the concept of balance and describes the signs and symptoms of various patterns of imbalance from a TCM perspective. She provides simple self-assessments readers can use to determine their own tendencies toward imbalance, and recommends foods, cooking methods, and lifestyle changes to balance each pattern. Fats, proteins, carbohydrates and sugars are each discussed from a western nutrition and eastern perspective, with beneficial and potentially unhealthful choices given for each body pattern.

5 out of 5 stars Personalized Nutrition.......2007-04-03

This is a great book if you are tired of the "one approach fits all" way of eating. It examines the time-proven message of Traditional Chinese Medicine: we can improve our health by changing what we eat. I have been following the eating plan for dampness for three weeks and have lost 5 lbs effortlessly. I have more energy and no cravings. Best of all, I feel in control of what I am eating and doing. Linda presents the information in a clear way that is easy to follow. If you want to make the right changes in your life to regain and maintain your health, this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars I swear by this book!.......2006-10-04

About four years ago I was very ill. I had sinus infections, colds, and bronchitis just about every month for about a year and a half. I was stressed out at work and in my personal life, put on 30 pounds, and developed GI problems doctors were unable to explain. Tired of traditional western medicine prescribing costly drugs which made no difference and constantly being sick, tired, and unable to focus, I decided to consult a holistic healthcare practitioner. Unable to pay the cost to have a formal in person consultation (since my healthcare did not cover it), she referred me to this book.

I felt like Linda Prout was reading my mind. Although the food choices she recommended were not at all what I was used to eating, I decided to give it a try. Within the first week I noticed a difference in how I felt. I lost 20 pounds in the first three months (without exercising) and have maintained a healthy weight since, with regular exercising and meditation. I eliminated stressors in my life as well. This book in so many ways saved my life. I have not been sick at all for the past three years. The acute asthma I developed at that time is nearly nonexistent. I enjoy the foods Linda suggests for my body type and have minimized the others which are not so good. I love it and swear by it!

5 out of 5 stars Almost didn't buy this book but so glad I did........2005-04-10

I have never written a review before, but I feel compelled to comment on this book. I read the reviews of Live in the Balance but was still hesitant to buy. I have a strong background in nutrition, eating for health, alternative medicine, etc...and was unconvinced Prout would have anything new to say. I am so thankful I made the purchase anyway. Highly readable, incredibly well researched with all studies and facts documented, this book is changing my life and the life of my family. Plagued with terrible allergies, eczema, and low energy, I feel better after following some of Prout's suggestion, IN ONE WEEK. I feel like a new person. Some of the information is also helping alleviate a family member's struggle with worsening depression. I am introducing some of the principle to make food choices for my two small children and already it seems to be helping boost their immune systems--an ongoing battle in our house. I have learned so much from this book. It is much more readable and well formatted than Food and Healing by Ammemarie Colbin (another excellent and informative book on food and healing). Buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting read, invaluable handbook.......2002-11-05

I came across Linda's book after months of looking for a resource that integrated Eastern wellness and nutrition principles into the Western lifestyle realities. Linda's book was a blessing! One month after taking some of the suggestions in the book, I was finally able to get rid of a respiratory condition that my Western-trained physicians had simply labeled hayfever and prescribed an allergy pill. The usefulness of Linda's book didn't end there, though. I find myself regularly consulting it as seasons change from damp to dry, hot to cold, etc. It's an excellent resource for anyone who likes to be aware of how their food and lifestyle choices affect moods and wellness. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Dropped Cholesterol 50 Points.......2001-12-18

On the urging of my doctor to get my blood pressure and cholesterol down or face a lifetime of taking drugs, I went on Linda's program with amazing success. In 6 weeks of eating by her prescription in the book my BP went from 144/94 to 130/80 and my Cholesterol from 264 to 208. And my appetite is completely under control for the first time in my 44 years. I have lost weight, inches and my skin is clear and glowing. And I have escaped getting the colds that have plagued everyone around me at work. I find it easy to eat her way with a bit of planning. My doctor is amazed at the change in my health. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has struggled with overall health and weight problems. It's the first thing that has worked for me.

* Draws on the very latest research into the workings of the human brain

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Cognitive science meets Madison Avenue.......2007-05-24

This treatise is designed for patient, methodical readers with a quest for insight. Erik Du Plessis is committed to explaining how advertisements work on consumers' consciousness, so he reviews existing research on advertising, and includes cognitive science's understanding of how the brain works on a chemical and cellular level. His research is accessible, since he often recaps and provides analogies that bring it to life, but some of the material remains dense and even obfuscates key points. Du Plessis' results are accurate but may seem self-defining such as the idea that ads you like are ads you remember and they can be difficult to apply. This is an impressive attempt to bring social science and neurological theory to bear on advertising. Given the intangible nature of creativity, a strong intuitive understanding of what makes advertisements likeable might help ad designers get more from this dissection. Of course, the industry also wants to know how it can reach a tech-oriented audience that records its favorite programs on TIVO and fast-forwards through the ads anyway. We find that this innovative book may be most useful for professionals in areas that involve a quantifiable, systematic approach, such as methods for determining how many ads to buy and how to allocate them across television outlets and other media.

3 out of 5 stars Too much research.......2006-11-22

I found this book to be filled with irrelevant research. I had the idea that this book would be more simplistic but unfortunately it's to involved and makes no sense to the common man on the street. If you want quick straight forward ideas on marketing and advertising this is not the book for you. If you are student who is needing bucket loads of information to impress the lecturer you should buy this book.

4 out of 5 stars Correcting the Record.......2005-08-13

The author's report of the Gibson/Dubow advertising recall controversy (p166-167) includes inappropriate statements which should be corrected and the record set straight.

It is not true that, "Unfortunately, the 'gist' of the 'answering' was that Larry was offended that Joel had not consulted with him before making...the results public....". Apparently the author missed my answer, published in the Journal of Advertising Research, May/June 1994, Vol. 34, No. 3, which directly rebutted Dubow's charges. It had no hint of the personal pique suggested by this quotation.

The author states, "Professor Joel Dubow reanalyzed Gibson's data and found that he was guilty of 'sloppy statistics'." This 'finding' is absurd. First, I did not conduct any statistical analysis so I could not possibly have been guilty of 'sloppy statistics'. Second, "Not Recall" contained very little 'Gibson data'-- of the 38 papers cited in this literature review, only 2 were by me and Dubow ignored both of them.

The author concludes, "Both.....and Gibson's papers have subsequently been 'debunked': that is, the evidence they presented has been shown to be invalid." Not true! There is no basis for this sweeping conclusion other than the already rebutted Dubow charges. Indeed the author himself notes, "In the end of this illuminating exchange, many people in the industry still thought that "Not Recall" provided real evidence that recall was not a valid way of measuring the effectiveness of advertsing".

Over 20 years ago, I said that the 'persuasion/recall' argument was the longest playing controversy in all of Marketing Research. Unfortunately,in 2005 it is still going on but I hope that the written record of that argument can be kept accurate.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of what makes advertising work.......2005-07-09

I am an accountant by trade who has recently taken on a volunteer advertising position. I found the book very informative in that it offered good common sensne to advertising. The conclusions were supported by research from all over the world. I will be reading it again.

A virtuoso musician before studying architecture, Libeskind has designed iconic buildings around the world, including the Jewish Museum Berlin and the Imperial War Museum in Manchester, England. In February 2003, Libeskind was chosen as the Master Plan Architect for the World Trade Center reconstruction. Full of the vitality, humor, and visionary spark that helped win him the Trade Center Commission, Breaking Ground invites readers to see architecture-and the larger world-through new perspectives."

4 out of 5 stars Only an idiot can be brilliant at breakfast.......2007-04-04

Libeskind proves in this personal account of his life that living dangerously has his rewards. He describes his endless struggles with authorities, bureaucrats in Berlin, New York and so on. He tells marvellous tales of taking a stand in architecture, how architecture and good design can add value to a city. But his life in architecture is an adventurous one. He won the commission for the Jewish Museum in Berlin just by good luck and an ambitious wife. Libeskind received too late the invitation to take part in the architectural competition. His wife succeeded by sheer thougness in nominating him for the contest and eventually he won. His struggle for the World Trade Center commission is a tough one. Larry Silverstein is his main opponent. Libeskind can never be confident about the outcome of this fight. Why insist on theoretical books on architecture when such personal accounts are available? Libeskind pleads for architecture with heart and soul. I liked this book tremendously and would like to recommend the book to every student of architecture. Just to learn that architecture is about winning competitions as much as about designing. Libeskind cites Einstein: Only an idiot can be brilliant at breakfast. Libeskind could have written this beautiful book during breakfast.

Daniel Liebskind designed the new wing of my local (Denver) art museum, and to coincide with its opening, my book club chose to read "Breaking Ground." In reading the book I was expecting to gain a little insight into who this man is and possibly how he came up with some of his ideas. But I never expected to find that he is a very good writer, incredibly well-read, and to learn of the amazing thought processes behind his designs (e.g. the Twin Towers Memorial among others world-wide). It was a wonderful surprise and a book I will read again some day.

5 out of 5 stars A riveting summation of Libeskind's philosophies........2006-08-29

I purchased this book after attending a lecture of Daniel Libeskind's at my University. Daniel is one of the most sought after architects of the twenty-first century, for good reason. I found his writing style to be intelligent and concise, with moments of sheer brilliance. This book is a quick read for those familiar with Libeskind's work and the famous architects of today. There seems to be a distinct polarity in the reviews of whether one "gets" Libeskind's work or does not. His literal translations of idea and emotion into space are at times discomforting. The projects he has chosen often revolve around tragedy and loss, and much of the substance of his design process is esoteric and abstract to those not familiar with his background. Music, harmony, space and art seem to flow together in his composition with a certain logical order and reason. I recommend this book to any architect or student interested in the intangible qualities of design.

1 out of 5 stars An Architect's Unmanly Behavior.......2006-08-03

You could be forgiven for thinking that `Breaking Ground' was written by a four-year old who had his favorite toy taken from him and has never gotten over it. This biography manages to emphasize it's author's weaknesses and insecurities more than it highlights any positive aspects of the life recorded. Author, Daniel Libeskind, airs many old grievances and seems hell-bent on boastfully proclaiming one-upmanship at any opportunity. He begins by telling a story about beating Itzhak Perlman in a musical competition when both were children. It may be honest trivia, but it sets a tone for the self-praise that is the book's most constant and ultimately most disturbing trait

The enormity of Libeskind's ego is matched only by the scale of his resentment towards everyone else. Libeskind's most severe criticisms are saved for fellow architects, all of whom he holds in especially low regard. In Daniel's mind, he is an architect without peers. Of architect (and Ground Zero competitor), Peter Eisenman, Libeskind says with evident venom that, "No one ever called him (Eisenman), a mensch!" It is a curious comment from Libeskind who is hardly a poster boy for masculinity himself.

In fact, as the book proceeds, it becomes clear that it is Daniel's wife and business partner, Nina, who wears the jockstrap around the Libeskind household. Whenever the going gets tough, and some recalcitrant client or municipality challenges one of Daniel's designs, it is Nina who flexes her biceps and steps in to do the heavy lifting. Daniel pits his mammoth ego against all comers, and might even blubber with rage, but usually he just resorts to "storming out of the room", a tactic he records frequently throughout his book. Unfortunately, the Libeskinds are not about building consensus or about listening to others, so most of their projects becomes embroiled in time-consuming controversy.

Most disappointingly, Libeskind fails to see the humanity of the world outside himself. The Ground Zero commission becomes just another opportunity to do some more bragging and to whittle away at the reputations of people he could have learned something from. `Breaking Ground' never becomes the inspirational memoir that it could have been. If you want a book about a true post-911 hero, you'll need to bypass `Breaking Ground' and try General Tommy Franks' recent biography instead. `American Soldier" is the story of a real man, one who fights his battles face-to-face, and doesn't need to hide behind a pen. And what a difference having some testosterone makes!!

1 out of 5 stars Complete Rubbish.......2006-07-22

I came across a pile of these books remaindered for 10 cents and figured - "Well, you can't go wrong for a dime, Right?" - WRONG!! What a load of rubbish this book is. Pomposity and egotism on every page. Libeskind's love affair with himself is not worth the paper it is written on ... not even at 10 cents a copy! This one goes straight into the recycle bin.

    Book Description

Vigorous, colorful, bold and highly personal, Breaking New Ground is the autobiography of Gifford Pinchot, founder and first chief of the Forest Service. He tells a fascinating tale of his efforts, under President Theodore Roosevelt, to wrest the forests from economic special interests and to bring them under management for multiple- and long-range use. His philosophy of "the greatest good for the greatest number over the longest time" has become the foundation upon which this country's conservation policy is based.

5 out of 5 stars The best way to understand the history of conservation!.......1999-07-03

Incredible story of a difficult struggle to gather support for the creation of our national forests. I learned that people don't change. It is ironic that the book covers how over 100 years ago, many miners, land developers were so violently opposed to any land being protected-I see the same thing happening today with sprawl.

A MUST READ. It made me really feel fortunate that we have our national forests to enjoy because we almost didn't. I had trouble putting this book down. It is very long, but oh so good if you have any interest in conservation.

    Book Description

How can we learn about the lives of African slaves in Colonial America? Often forbidden to read or write, they left few written records. But in 1991 scientists rediscovered New York's long-ignored African Burial Ground, which opened an exciting new window into the past.A woman with filed teeth buried with a girdle of beads; a black soldier buried with his British Navy uniform, his face pointing east; a mother and child, laid to rest side by side: to scientists, each of these burials has much to tell us about African slaves in America.Breaking Ground, Breaking Silence shows how archaeologists and anthropologists have learned to read life stories in shattered bones, tiny beads, and the faint traces left by coffin lids in ancient soil. At the same time, by blending together the insights found buried in the soil and the results of historians' careful studies, it gives us a moving, inspiring portrait of the lives Africans created in Colonial New York.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous book! For adults as well as kids!.......2001-05-11

Great book! Yes, archaeology in NYC! Although this book is listed as a young readers book, I found it a facinating read for adults interested in this subject area of archaeology and black history. I have never found such a great book that combines both the history of a people that few books are written on with a modern day archaeological dig.

Great resource for teachers, black history month and just for those of us out there who are facinated with archaeology.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2000-06-15

This book wonderfully encompasses a vast wealth of knowledge. Archaeology, history, current events, and modern day issues are just a few things. This book is extremely well written from the introduction, to the archeological dig, to an epilogue that summarized the issues behind the dig. I found it very informative about the history of African Americans during colonial times. I also thought that it was informative on the procedures followed for archeological digs. I really got a feel for the climate, attitudes, and living of African Americans during their first years in America. I would definitely use this book in a classroom study of the early Americans. It presents an alternate view than the pioneering white male view commonly seen during these times. The many pictures are graphic, well-taken and very interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and factual data about a people of long ago.......1999-07-21

Breaking Ground, Breaking Silence was perhaps not one of the most interesting books I have ever read, but it is definitely one of the most haunting. When the book first starts out, the reader has no idea that what is beneath centuries of asphalt are people long ago and long forgotten. The most wonderful thing about the book was the way researchers were able to construct the lives of those found. I thought going back in the past and intricately constructing their journeys and lives was incredible. I also enjoyed, for lack of a better word, the photographs. Perhaps the most haunting was the one of mother and child. I felt sorrow and pity for those who had to endure such hardships, but who willed something better for themselves and those who followed. Their lives should be recorded and the place where they were buried should be sacred. I don't know how many students will enjoy this as pleasure reading, unless they enjoy finding artifacts, but I am positive no media center should be without this resource. Kids should have at least exposure with this book to know it is out there. It would be a fantastic reference and addition to any collection. These lives should be celebrated and honored. They, I feel, deserve at least that as a payment for a price so dearly paid by many ancestors.

    4 out of 5 stars great book.......1999-06-10

This was a great book. If you have not ordered it yet, Order it! When I started reading this book I was not intrested in archology. It is still not my favorite thing. It was a facinating story. thats why I liked it.It taught me stuff about the revolutiary war and slavary.READ IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        Book Description

Thirteen classroom teachers and seven teacher educators break new ground on the important subject of the relationship between reading and writing. This new ground shows how process approaches in the writing can be used successfully in the teaching of reading. Teachers have known for some time that children's writing and thinking improve as the children become involved in explaining their own writing processes from topic selection to finished draft. In Breaking Ground, twenty contributors explore the value of children explaining their own writing processes.

The twenty chapters in this book reveal:
