Good ideas.......2007-08-31
This is a good book for beginners. Wish there was a little more variety of design style. Haven't built my deck yet, but either way if you follow this books suggestions I imagine it will be a very good deck.
Building Second deck now.......2007-07-05
My wife and I successfully built a deck using this book 2 years ago. Planned, submitted plans to village got building permit and final inspection. It felt good to accomplish such a large task with only 2 people who are not carpenters and haven't built a deck before. The deck is around 300 sq. ft. so it is not small. The book has all the information you need to build a solid deck. It also includes information on problems you could run into and ideas for customizing the deck. We are now building a smaller 100 sq. ft. deck for the front of our house. Believe me, we could not have done this without this great book.
Beginner to Expert, Something for all........2007-06-12
I am a firm believer in the KISS method of doing things. (Keep It Simple Stupid") Every step is covered in this book so that anyone can learn from it. The "Build Like A Pro" series of books are all laid out like this one. The "Expert Tips" are great. They show you short cuts to help you do the jobs right, but in less time. This is stuff you only learn by doing the job everyday. They are trade secrets.
Excellent book for the novice and the pro!.......2007-02-20
This book has great details and illustrations. The book flows from beginning to end and is written so that even the novice (me!) can clearly understand and comprehend. I read it cover to cover and can' wait to use it as a reference again and again.
Agreed.......2006-05-30
After doing my own research, I ended up purchasing this book. I agree completely with the other reviews - its the best book, its the only book you need, and I congratulate the author on making this a flexible yet thorough resource that guides you pictorally through every step of the process. Just plain awesome, and I just finished my deck and I love it - it exceeds my expectations and its due to the advice in these pages.
Book Description
The fundamentals of assembling a greenhouse and custom designing it to the gardener's needs, from simple cold frames to large free-standing and attached-to-the-house structures.
Customer Reviews:
I built one of the Greenhouses from this book.......2007-01-12
This book was well written and offered many interesting greenhouse plans. I built a 22x40 foot model from the plans and have been very happy with the results.
Building Your Own Greenhouse (Greenhouse Basics).......2006-01-30
Pretty simple to follow instructions and drawings. Not the most exciting book of its kind I have read recently, but some good information and alternative building ideas.
The Least Expensive Way to Get Started.......2006-01-10
This is simply a magnificent book on how to construct your own hobby greenhouse as well as other gardening structures such as simple cold frames or installing a bay window with a nice ledge in your home. The main advantage of building your own greenhouse is cost-savings; manufactured greenhouses are very expensive to buy and even more expensive to have assembled. And you don't need to be a handyman to put one together - in most cases you'll be building a frame to hold plastic sheeting to keep out the cold and let in the sun's rays. So what if it's a little crooked here or there? Chances are neither you nor anyone else will notice, but the flowering assortment of vegetables, fruits, and specimen plants will grab everyone's attention!
The author, Mark Freeman, shares his own experiences as well as the experiences of others in building greenhouse structures. First he explains how greenhouses work. Then he shows you every step toward the completion of your own hobby greenhouse. The rest of the chapters are 'Site Selection and Laying a Foundation', 'Framing', 'Glazing', 'Ventilation' (a very important chapter because successful greenhouse gardening hinges on this), 'Supplemental Heating, Insulation, and Heat Sinks', 'Plumbing and Wiring', and 'Shutters and Shades'. Sources for suppliers, manufacturers, and distributors are also listed in appendices. In conclusion, he shares designs for eleven different DIY greenhouse structures including a hoop house. Another design is called Mary's Madhouse (an attached second-floor solar greenhouse built lean-to fashion over top of an adjoining shed) and Alwin's Plumber's Friend is a greenhouse made from PVC pipe. Mark Freeman's greenhouse is attached to his home and includes a hot tub nestled among his seedlings and houseplants.
In short, this is a great resource for the home gardener who has thought about building his or her first little greenhouse because you will no doubt experience success without too much fuss.

Customer Reviews:
Dream Book.......2006-06-27
This book will set your imagination on fire and motivate you to turn your ordinary backyard into a mini-paradise. Lots of pictures to drool over, you will find yourself thumbing thru it again and again..
Outdoor Rooms.......2004-07-28
This is a great "thumb thur" book. It has really nice pictures of outdoor areas that are very "architectural".... Not helpful for the "average joe" looking for ideas to create your own backyard/outdoor patio/room.
Great for Entertaining Types.......2002-02-28
If you need ideas on how to create outdoor spaces for entertaining - this book is for you. Dining, lounging, dining, lounging... Even different photos of the same patio have different place settings on the tables to give you dining ideas. After a while, I began looking for spaces where you could do something other than dine, or lounge. Overall, nice photos of nice outdoor spaces, but limited appeal.
Fresh ideas, lots of variety, great mixing of materials.......2001-04-17
When looking for fresh ideas and inspiration on how to create the prefect outdoor space you needn't look any further than this book. From a modern symmetrical porch to lush English gardens, it showcases a wide range of styles. With so much to choose from anyone can find something to suit their taste.
Many of the outdoor rooms have pools. It is amazing how they manage to flawlessly integrate the pools into the environment without making them seem out of place or just thrown there. The magnificent outdoor spaces truly become a part of the home.
I love the combination of styles and how they compliment one another. One room features the creamy white walls of Greece, a timber roof and hot Mexican colors in a cushioned seat. Large color photos tell the story with brief descriptions of each example.
In the back there is a sampler of fine furnishing and accessories form a variety of different styles including historical, rustic, Mediterranean/island, and geometric. There is also a helpful directory of design professionals, photographers and product sources.
If you love concrete & steel, this book is for you!.......2001-04-04
Or if you love browsing Swedish furniture catalogues, buy this book! Unfortunately, I'm not a big concrete & steel fan or heavily into Swedish furniture. It's a lovely book but if, like me, you're looking for garden inspiration or expecting visions that incorporate trees and plants, look elsewhere and save your money. The designs for outdoor rooms in this book left me cold. I gave it a reasonably good rating because I realize that readers who love modern architecture will probably enjoy it.

An Insider's Look at "Glass Houses".......2000-03-12
As a young entrepreneur in the late 80's, I was directed to May Woods' book as a source for researching my newest endeavor - designing and fabricating conservatories for the North American market. A builder, by trade, I was looking for a new venue in the construction arena. Until reading Ms Woods' book, I was only interested in the structural aspect and marketability of these beautiful glass facilities. I was so impressed by the historical background, personal insight and the obvious love of conservatories presented by Ms. Woods through her print media, that I took steps to arrange a meeting with her during a planned trip to London. Through a fellow conservatory design, who was a personal friend of Ms Woods', I was able to meet with the authoress. Her background in the "inner workings" of conservatories and her experiences as a conservatory owner in London helped me discover the most important aspect of conservatory designing - the ambiance of conservatory living. "Glass Houses" is the first book I recommend to my clients when they have questions regarding their desire to own a conservatory and what to do with it once they have it. More than just pictures, structural drawings and technical garble, it can serve as a terrific research tool when you are considering conservatory ownership.

Another excellent buy!.......2007-03-21
This book is great for people looking to either build or purchase a greenhouse. With recommendations about the location, to different types of greenhouses, this is a perfect reference book!
Great information!.......2007-01-11
This book gives great information from building the foundation to shelving. I found it a great help in choosing my greenhouse kit and what foundation to use. Anyone interested in purchasing or building their own greenhouse needs this book. I read several, this one was the best.
The beginner's introduction to greenhouses........2006-12-27
Good book for those who just want basic information and principles. Descriptive literature is good, pictures are excellent, and the book is pleasantly / logically arranged. Is it the "source" on greenhouses, no. However, it is a good read and good book. I have purchased other resources (including the heavy text recommended by another reviewer) and find this book to be generally as informative as the others, particularly given its price.
great book!.......2006-11-05
this book was just what I was looking for! It has great instructions on how to manage by small greenhouse that the kids got me for my birthday. Great for beginners! I was so impressed I bought one for a girlfriend!
Ortho's All About Greenhouses.......2005-10-22
This book was very informative. How to deal with frost and protect plants to their fullest! How to create the style and form we are looking for and do ourselves. Highly Recommended!
Book Description
For avid gardeners, the biggest downside of the hobby is the limited growing season in much of the country. Gardening during the winter is often reduced to tending houseplants and browsing seed catalogs for next summer’s tomato choices.
Master Gardener and builder Roger Marshall enthusiastically presents his case for home greenhouses with a thorough examination of everything the potential builder needs to know. Marshall’s coverage of the subject begins with a careful consideration of the various purposes served by greenhouses. Will the structure be used as a damp, warm hothouse for rare orchids? A tropical paradise for banana and citrus trees? A friendlier environment in which to get a jump on a summer vegetable garden is the goal for many gardeners, while an inviting setting for a year-round hot tub surrounded by lush greenery has an undeniable appeal. Whatever its eventual use will be, Marshall helps the reader examine every option and make an informed choice.
After determining the type and style of the structure, Marshall progresses, chapter by chapter, through the construction elements of the greenhouse — from choosing a site, to laying the foundation and determining which glazing material will work best. Plumbing, heating, supplemental lighting, misting, and automatic venting systems are also covered for the truly committed reader/gardener.
The final section of the book includes detailed plans for nine actual greenhouses, from a simple cold frame to an elaborately detailed framed, detached structure. Whatever the greenhouse goal, Marshall opens the way to longer growing seasons, abundant organically grown fruits and vegetables, and many more happy months playing in the dirt!

Customer Reviews:
a terrible disappointment.......2007-09-12
I've bought that book 'cause I'm planning to transform a small corner of my garden into a nice patio. But this book is about balconies, sky gardens, decks, pools, back yards, seaside retreats, etc...Nothing about patios!!! If you're looking for ideas for your patio, this probably isn't a good book for you.
Best Inspiring Book for Outdoor Design.......2007-05-25
A definite must have. This is by far one of the best inspiring books for outdoor designs. If you are looking for something modern, minimalist, different from ordinary, don't look any further and buy this book. I designed my own terrace thanks to the great ideas and inspiration by Jamie Durie.
This is one of my favorite inspiration books.......2006-06-09
This is the best of Durie's books and is an excellent companion for the California garden designer. The plans are helpful for understanding the layout of a garden, but the photos are what really make the book. The light modern style, clever detailing, and CA compatible plants give me new ideas every time I open it.
Must-read for garden design.......2004-07-12
I must admit that I wasn't expecting much from Jamie Durie, knowing him mainly for his home renovation shows in Australia.
However, after much searching through countless books on garden design in bookstores, I found his books to be far and away the best I've seen.
His designs are very modern and innovative and the book gives a lot of insight into the design and construction process. Backgrounds and reasoning on particular choices made and goes into detail on subjects such as lighting, plants and materials.
I own quite a few garden design books and I would definately rate this the best I've seen and just about every design in his books I would rate amongst the best I've seen.
A more elegant modern.......2003-08-30
This book is an excellent sourse of inspiration for the garden designer who is tired of traditional garden design. Jamie Durie explores new materials and plant selections in a way that is comfortable and exciting. A must read for those of us who are tired of English garden design!

Courtyards: Intimate Outdoor Spaces presents a pictorial survey of an increasingly popular part of indoor/outdoor design-the courtyard. Today's architects and designers are creating beautifully private indoor/outdoor spaces amidst escalating urban development.
Customer Reviews:
disappointing.......2006-08-25
This book was recommended as a guide to developing sculpture gardens and outdoor living spaces. It is not. The photographs appear to be very dated as are the subject courtyards. It is a dull, unispired book.
A rare look at the function, definition and purpose of a courtyard.......2006-01-05
Douglas Keister's Courtyards: Intimate Outdoor Spaces takes a rare look at the function, definition and purpose of a courtyard surveying courtyards around the world which grace both home and public establishment. Courtyards can be adapted to both large and small spaces, vary in greenery, stonework, and lighting, and are perfect additions for homeowners seeking to remodel with style. Turn a backyard into a courtyard setting or consider many options through the phone color exhibition of photographer Keister, paired with text which considers design options and successful examples.
What a Beautiful Book.......2005-10-01
The author has definitely done his homework. We are in the process of creating a courtyard in our back yard after having added a sunroom this past season. Our theme has been "New Orleans" for the sunroom ... even though we live in a suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, we have visited New Orleans many times and consider it our "home away from home". There are courtyards from New Orleans featured in this book - but many from other places as well. Whatever you are looking for in courtyard ideas, you will find it here.
