Have you ever stopped to think that cases such as Tommy's, whose innocence I believe in, the person or persons that committed a murder are still free to kill again?
After being involved in a case of someone I care about and having the police, prosecutors, and the judge betray that person, I started reading stories of other real life people who had also been betrayed by the police, prosecutors, judges, well... the whole "justice" system. One of the first books I read was "Fatal Flaw". After reading this book, with my heart breaking for Tommy and his mother, I contacted Tommy. He became a very dear friend of mine, as did his precious mother. Tommy has lost both his father and his mother while being in prison. I cannot think of a more hurtful thing in the world than to be in prison, an innocent person, and to lose someone you love. Not to mention Tommy's wife having been murdered, and not by him.
This book is the most wonderful book about the way the lack of justice is allowed in our country. It is easy to read, easy to follow and understand. Phillip Finch is a wonderful author who did not go into the telling of this story because he believed in Tommy's innocence. Because of his ability to do research and his honesty, he had to come to the conclusion that Tommy is innocent. If you read this story, you will see why he and others thought Tommy could be guilty. You will think... wait! I thought he is suppose to be innocent. Keep reading.
You might also think on this while reading. Other facts have come to light since the book was written to prove even further that Tommy is not just "not guilty" but totally innocent. Where are those who committed these murders? Not in prison! Does that worry you? Does it make anyone safer because "someone" is in prison for the murders? Sadly that does satisfy too many people.
Does it bother you that this can happen to anyone? Maybe you or someone you love? You might think that it never would, but if you are in the wrong place at the right time for the police, you could have evidence put together to make you or someone you love look guilty. Think about that! Read this story. You can read this book online at no cost. Do a search for Tommy Zeigler.
One thing that I would like to tell you about this book that was most shocking to me is concerning the jury. Did you know that other than physical abuse, a jury can do or say just about anything to get other jurors to change their mind. Nothing is suppose to leave the jury room about what is said or done during the trial. Nothing is recorded. In this book you will learn how a juror was allowed to hold a gun to another juror's head and pull the trigger. This woman was a hold out for "not guilty". The juror wanted her to change her mind. The woman tried to tell the judge, but he would not allow the woman to talk. He did not want a mistrial. Finally the woman managed to get a message to the judge. He had a doctor write her a prescription for Valium and she was told to take the medication. She finally could hold out no longer, and caved in from the pressure, never believing Tommy was guilty.
Tommy is innocent. The system is flawed. Real killers are going free. Is that okay with you? What if you are the next person that gets murdered because of a case like this, convicting an innocent person, especially when the state knows the person on trial is innocent. How sad and scary! How unfair for the innocent and it brings no justice for the victims that are killed.

That Southern justice can be an oxymoron is no surprise. But this book lays out in stunning detail how the system can close ranks to create an impenetrable thicket of corruption. It methodically deconstructs the state's case to reveal a disturbing array of official misinformation, mistakes and misconduct. The case is no less pertinent today, almost 30 years later, for the defendant still resides on death row. Perhaps the most stunning aspect is that the case has never been successfully appealed as it wended its way North through Federal courts. In 1975, Winter Garden, Florida was a small, one-horse migrant labor and truck stop town bypassed by the supposed prosperity brought to Central Florida by the Disney Company. Spared the rapicious raping of the Kissimmee-St Cloud area, with its swamp draining killing of animals, Winter Garden remained as it had been--a lower class white working community dependent on trucking and citrus for its existence.
Enter William Thomas Zeigler who, by the author's own description drove oldsmobiles and detested rock and roll music. Unknown to many residents, the Zeigler family wealth stood at just over one million dollars--a princely sum in the 1970s. The quiet, modest veneer of the Zeigler family was broken by the existence of sexual problems between Tommy and Eunice Zeigler. Two weeks before the murder of Eunice, the couple stopped having intercourse with Eunice threatening to go to a fertility specialist in Orlando. Rumors abounded that Tommy was homosexual and a member of a sex ring of important local men. The author points out that Zeigler commited two unforgiveable crimes. One, he helped a black man retain a liquor license in the face of local and state opposition. Two, he helped break up a loan sharking ring manned by members of the Orange County (Orlando) Sherrif's Department. Later that year, the Sherrif, Dave Starr, resigned under pressure and his chief deputy, Leigh MacEachern, wne to jail convicted of charges of official corruption.
Finch outlines in great detail the malfeasance of police and prosecutors. First, sherrif's deputies trampled evidence at the crime scene. Later, judges and FBI authorities joined in to complete a fait accompli ensuring the swift journey of Mr. Zeigler to Florida's death row, where he remains to this day. Despite having two of the finest criminal defense lawyers in orlando--Ed Kirkland and Terry Hadley, Zeigler stood no chance of even getting a routine continuance or investigator access to the crime scene. Additionally, Finch outlines how key witnesses were not interviewed nor called to trial leaving the reader no doubt that the fix was in. Finch leaves the reader wondering an age-old question--how can a nation that calls itslef a democracy allow such malfeasance in its criminal justice system?
I have a special interest in this book having lived in Orlando at the time of the crime and having visited the crime scene as recently as last year. Finch has written an important, readable indictment of southern justice.

Carola Dunn has created a fun 'heroine' in Daisy. The stories are well plotted, and the settings are well crafted. Altogether an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon.
A great Sophmore Effort.......2007-08-16
The second in the Daisy Dalrymple Mystery series, this book continues with Daisy going to another acquaintance's house to write about their house. This time, however, the matriarch of the house doesn't appreciate Daisy's personality. Not long after arriving, things get worse when Daisy is present when the body of a missing parlourmaid is discovered. Alec is called in and Daisy proceeds to try to help.
This book continues to develop the characters of Phillip Petrie, Daisy, and Alec Fletcher. It develops the track of Alec and Daisy's attraction to each other, as well as a developing friendship between Alec and Phillip. Ms. Dunn's storytelling is fun and light. An excellent British cozy!
Disappointing.......2003-01-29
I was pretty disappointed with #2 in the Daisy Dalrymple series. The mystery doesn't start to unfold until about half way through the novel-- the rest is just set-up. When things finally do get rolling, I wasn't very engrossed by the mystery, and found the final resolution anticlimactic.
A Fun Second Mystery.......2002-02-03
The Honorable Daisy Dalrymple is working on her second article for Town and Country Magazine. This time, she's been invited to profile Occles Hall by a friend from school. Lady Valeria isn't completely happy about Daisy's presence, but agrees to let her continue. While touring the winter garden, the discovery of a dead bush leads to the discovery of a body. Grace Moss, the parlor maid, was presumed to have run away two months ago. When Lady Valeria pressures the local police into arresting one of the estate gardeners, Daisy's observations convince her that an innocent man has been arrested. She calls her friend Detective Chief Inspector Alec Fletcher to come help, but can they solve a murder that's two months old?
This is the second book in the Daisy Dalrymple series, set in 1923 England. It's a cozy with an emphasis on character and interviewing the suspects over tons of action. But don't misunderstand; it's a great read. Lady Valeria is a strong character, and watching the other characters try to work around her is lots of fun. The pace of the story doesn't lag, with lots of new information and complications coming on a regular basis. Daisy and Alec's relationship is also very fun to watch, as they are not willing to admit to any feelings between them.
If you're looking for a book with lots of shoot-outs and close calls, look elsewhere. However, if you are looking for a good mystery with great characters and an intriguing plot, this is the series for you.
Fun and interesting!!!.......2001-12-03
This mystery, set in 1920's London is a great mystery novel that is not cluttered with gore and sexual innuendos. It's interesting and fun. I especially enjoyed the endearing flirtations between Daisy and Alec. Their interactions are a nice change from the often crassness of today's t.v. You won't find much to stress you out here, everything fits into a neat package by the end of the book. It's a great way to relax and be taken away from daily life. And Daisy's such a great gal! I really loved it! Check out Carola Dunn's other Daisy Dalrymple mysteries. They're all great!

The author suggests that you plan your garden with winter in mind. She explains which plants need special care and how to care for them. She shows how to improve plant survival, where and how to plant more sensitive species to avoid damage from snow or frost, how to protect plants from frozen soil, etc.
Buchanan organizes her book by plants that stay green over winter (evergreens), have showy bark or twigs, bear fruits or berries, and by grasses and first flowers. Within each group, she suggests several plants and describes them (look, height, light requirements, growing zone, and attraction points). About a quarter of the plants are shown in photographs. The book is a great reference for anyone interested in creating a year-round attractive garden.
Some good ideas..........2001-07-27
For those who live in cold climates, or those who want to be assured of some year-round interest from their plantings, this is a good source of ideas. The Winter Garden lists (with many color photographs) plants of all types and sizes which remain interesting in winter for their color, shape, berries, or texture. It's a good book to read for gardeners who are suffering from let down when the blooming season passes. I found this bit of advice useful: plan any landscape as if it were a winter landscape. Then you will be assured of some beauty all year, and even more so when the flowers do finally pop up. Also, plant an evergreen shrub and maybe some ornamental grass (or Christmas ferns) in the center of a garden bed; colorful annuals and perennials can surround this when weather permits.

I absolutely loved this book! The tension between Madeline and Thomas was obvious from the start and I liked the fact that she was a woman who was not afraid to be in charge of her sexuality, which for the time period was practically unheard of.

I was in the mood for a passionate story. This one tipped the scales. It was not what I expected but I still very much enjoyed the book. I couldn't put it down. (If you're offended by explicit material, this book will not be for you.) Once the relationship started between Thomas and Madeleine, I couldn't wait to see what they'd do next. It was that hot. If you like it hot, you'll like this one. Happy reading.
PORNOGRAPHIC! Not a romance!.......2006-09-09
Okay, so here I am again, buying a book because of the "5 star" rating. In fact, it had such rave reviews I even forked out $21.00 to buy the dumb thing used - thinking I would have this "classic" of a novel to add to my collection. I have NO IDEA how in the world it was rated so high! First off, I haven't and won't be finishing this book. There are 24 chapters in the book, I read to chapter 19, and had enough! The characters are yet to have any feelings toward one another other than for pure lust! The book has no plot thus far, and the entire thing has been about nothing but explict sex acts and sexual comments about what they want to do to the other! And just when I thought it couldn't get worse, chapter 19 proved me wrong. I have NEVER read anything so explicit in a "romance" novel before! Madeline is a "loose" character, the one instigating every sexual encounter, because she has never been loved in her life and does not know what love is. Thomas, wants love, but lusts after her in the same way, because he is trying to fulfill a dream of being with the woman for many years. It has been hard to keep on reading, and I have been doing so thinking at some point, a story is to be told here, but it hasn't yet. There is no story - just sex! I can already obviously tell where it is going and how it will end without getting there yet. This is in no way a "romance". I think the author obiviously wants people to "get off" on the sex and knows not how to write about anything else - so if you are in to that type of thing, you will enjoy the read - but if you are in it for a great romance of a love story - in which the sex comes naturally and in not such explicit detail, after the "FEELINGS" and chemistry have developed between the characters, then this is not the book for you!! Mine, is on it's way to the trash can where it belongs!!!!!
An absolutely beautiful and luscious love story.......2005-08-25
adele ashworth has quickly joined my short list of authors i simply must read. she has the wonderful ability to not only write emotionally engaging love stories but also write the most sensuous, luscious love scenes of any one in the business. to top it off, she even does a good job of providing a back plot that, while interesting, doesn't take away from the telling of the love story.
in this story, madeleine dumais is an uncommonly beautiful and sophisticated french spy working for the british government. she has enough emotional baggage to come to the conclusion that she will never marry, but she's not really sad about it. she prefers the life of a spy, being an independent woman in a time when women were seen as nothing more than possessions. the british government has sent her to winter garden to partner with another spy as they attempt to uncover a opium smuggling ring.
thomas blackwood is the other spy. he is tall, broad, and ruggedly handsome. he is also painfully disfigured in his legs from an accident. he's a reclusive renaissance man, widowed for many years, with a son studying abroad. he harbors a really large secret where ms. dumais is concerned.
ms. dumais isn't one of those shrinking flowers who isn't comfortable with her sexuality. she's 29 and has had several lovers. she is honest about her sexual attraction to thomas and lets him know early on that she wishes to be his lover. however, she initially only sees this as a pleasant interlude to be experienced while they investigate the smuggling ring. however, blackwood has other ideas.
watching this love story unfold left me completely enthralled. ashworth depicts the yearning thomas feels for dumais with a deft touch, never making it overly dramatic or unbelievable. thomas is the kind of hero the reader will easily fall in love with. he's strong, intelligent, sensitive and emotional, and his expressions and actions are open and honest. madeleine, because of her confidence, makes for a wonderful heroine. she is intelligent, generous, candid, gentle, and caring. in other words, she is the perfect match for thomas. the chemistry between these two is palpable and it left me feeling as though i was right there, experiencing all of their emotions with them. that's the gift of ashworth's writing.
the love scenes? OH.MY.GOODNESS. ashworth doesn't fall into the purple prose pit. she doesn't get into pornographic description despite what another reviewer has stated. instead, she paints her scenes with a sensuality and eroticism that builds to a wonderful crescendo of emotion that left me gasping for air. her scenes are bold and extremely beautiful. if you've read lisa kleypas or sabrina jeffries, then you'll have an idea of ashworth's abilities, although i will say that ashworth does an even better job of making the scenes emotionally satisfying as her characters are totally engrossed in the scenes and the scenes themselves are several pages long.
the plot of the smuggling ring is totally secondary here. most of the book takes place in the cottage madeleine and thomas share, but it's not so overwhelming that the reader gets cabin fever. they interact with other characters and that helps in fleshing out both of them as people. however, i've always preferred romance stories where the hero and heroine spend alot of time together so that it gives me a chance to watch each minute of their love story unfold. if you like this too, then you won't care about the lack of additional depth to the plot.
if you like stories where there is alot of interaction between the hero and heroine, a high level of emotion, titilation, sensual dialogue and luscious love scenes with a plot that is very much secondary but well done in keeping the story moving, then you simply must get this book. i cannot recommend it highly enough. i'll just say that when i finished it at 1 a.m., i was ready to read it all over again! you will too, especially the last couple of chapters, which are an explosion of romance and emotion.
Not your typical, boring, predictable, old school Historical (That goodness!).......2005-08-09
Thank you for those reviewers who gave me some insight into this book. The characters are different from the 'older' romance books as well as the staid formulas of so many historicals and one of the reason's I quit reading them a long time ago. But this book was worth going back into the genre'.
There are many differences from the basic plot lines that make this story just not feel or sound so familiar.
One of the differences is in the characters----
First, the hero is far less than physically perfect, a first for me after reading bizillion's of 'romance' novels. I don't mean just a mild problem either, but something heartwrenching even by today's standards. Sadly, in so many of the formulamatic HR's, the worst any hero had to deal with was maybe an eye patch and a facial scar that just, well, made him look sooo much better in the end.
But this hero will just about tear your heart out. I don't know, but the term tortured for the first time really seems to apply here. For me, I was actually aching from the descriptions.
Secondly, the heroine is well, not a spring chicken and not pure as snow. OK, so I'm old enough to be her mama, but still..
As a woman who is no longer young or a virgin, the 'first time virgin bedding' of some books was getting a bit tedious to say the least. And boring.
Purity can be dull because it can also mean a character without facets. But she has many layers, lots of personality and you can see why the hero has fallen for her. She's also, GASTHP!!! pretty outgoing sexually. Not in a skanky manner either, but in a loving, generous, "I really do care for you and want to make you happy" way that just makes you like her all the more.
WG is also different in the intent and context---too often we have the woman jumping through hoops to win the man's love. Or we have the tortured Alpha-male that is fighting his feelings. Or we have a couple that hasn't figured out yet how they feel for each other. Predictable to the in'th degree and often frustrating.
Well, this just sets the whole pattern on its ear. Not only do we have a hero that adores the heroine, but Oh my, the degree is so intense.... It had me in tears in a few places.
Lastly, the book is very erotic, but it's so right with these two characters. It adds to and flows with the story line....
WARNING- For those who think this book is pornographic, erm...PLEASE don't go near anything by Kenyon, Moning, Knight, Feehan, Howard etc, and stay the HECK away from Ellora's Cave. You'll be toast.
So, on a rating of 1 to 10, with 10 being burn the house down Angela Knight and 1 being genteel Woodiwiss...this book is about a 6 or 7. OK, maybe more a 8. But a very sweet 8 ;)
Lastly, the ending will have you squalling. The next to the last chapter was dang near heartbreaking for me (geez, I'm just a marshmallow). But the last chapter is so sweet. I found myself afterwards going back to re-read it several times.
OK, recommended for not being predictable, not being a boring HR that is so overdone that my teeth hurt at the covers alone, having very different characters, absolutely fabulous eroticism and lastly, a sweetness that permeates the book and just makes it a joy to read.

So many garden books so little time! Yet take time for McIntire's hands on common sense. McIntire has spent 14 years experimenting and learning. It's as if your friend had decided to help you get started. And she can write. Good for First Timers.......2005-12-11
Sensibly organized, this book was a terrific guide for a new grower like me. Though I've long been a gardening fan, I've rarely grown flowers for cutting and never with a plan. This helped make it managable and fun.
