5 out of 5 stars GARDEN MOSAICS.......2006-11-03

This book is great! Both funky and eclectic, the many projects enclosed in its pages are worthy of exhibition in anyone's garden. I highly recommend this book to anyone just starting out in mosaics or to the seasoned mosaic artist.

5 out of 5 stars highly recommended.......2005-07-06

if you are like me, you might own several mosaic books. This one is one of my favorites! Here's why:

Clear, concise directions with good pictures-most projects could be done by a beginner but there are also MANY projects to make a more advanced artist happy.

Great variation of mosaics-this author covers some mosaics styles I've never seen in other books. Like making your own wire mesh base for cool animal mosaic sculptures-with enough how to pictures that even I can contemplate making one:), making several different shaped stepping stones-from scratch-these are GREAT-there are footprints and fish to die for. And unusual mosaic creations like windchimes and garden "cones".

This book helps you to think outside the box and many of these projects would look wonderful outside or inside as well. Well worth the $13 bucks that Amazon sells it for-highly recommended!

This is a joint project between the editors of Better Homes & Gardens and the Home Depot, and much like their earlier collaboration, Home Improvement 1-2-3, they cover a lot of ground in this big, detailed book. Clear, step-by-step instructions and diagrams for just about any outdoor project one can imagine--from deck building and maintenance to building a retaining wall to making outdoor furniture to installing an outdoor faucet or constructing a customized fountain--it's in here.

A very useful series of features throughout the book helps guide the homeowner: "Skill Scale" assesses the skill level needed for individual projects; "Trip Saver" helps save time and money, eliminating numerous trips to the store; "Safety Alert" warns of potential dangers on given projects; "Oops!" describes common errors and boo-boos and helps find solutions; "Designer's Corner" helps the reader with design and style choices.

Overall, as a comprehensive and nitty-gritty guide to all of the most common outdoor projects, this is a perfect book for the novice, but will have information and shortcuts for the experienced homeowner and do-it-yourselfer, too. --Mark A. Hetts

5 out of 5 stars Great for the 1st time landscaper!!.......2006-12-07

My husband is a carpenter and very good with working on things in the home. He needed a little guidance for outdoor projects that he never had done before. This book was even great for me who has no knowledge or training in building or landscaping. The two of us redid our entire back yard and it looks wonderful....we added a deck, patio, retaining wall, and lots of plants. Now we are looking forward to working on the front yard next Spring. This book will definitely get more use.

4 out of 5 stars nice book!!.......2005-08-14

This book truly gives you the most "bang for your buck". If you are interested in learning how to do a wide variety of things and are somewhat mechanically inclined.....THIS is the book for you! I have my own contracting business and refer to this book many times for that "extra" insight I need on a project. The diagrams and pictures are very helpful and I truly would recommend this book to anyone!

5 out of 5 stars A boon for us non-carpenter, born-in-the-big-city types........2001-01-01

Generally when I used think about home improvements (indoor or out) I thought about calling somebody (experienced or not) to help me with it. It was usually at this point that the neighbors would bring their kids inside. . . Just to be safe. . . To be honest, until just after I bought this book (a year ago) I didn't think I had the inate skills needed to do something as alien to modern men as replacing a fawcet washer, much less replacing the whole fawcet and installing a greenhouse!! This book, aside from not being very good at helping you lift heavy things, is all the help you will need to complete hundreds of different improvement projects in and around your house.

The skill gauge is very acurate in it's time estimates and tells you what level of skills you should have before starting a project - This is helpful if only so you can put your local fire department on call. With all the information on tools, their usage, and the type, amount and quality of materials you will need this book could make Homer Simpson look like Martha Stewart. . . Well, maybe more like Tim Allen, but you get the point.

I highly recommend this book and the Home Depot "HOME IMPROVEMENTS 1-2-3" book as well!! Truly money well spent!

4 out of 5 stars love this book.......1999-10-25

this book is great my husband wanted it and now he loves it he uses it all the time and it give us both ideas on things we can do and then shows us how.

5 out of 5 stars The Handymans Hand Guide.......1999-09-01

A user-friendly search manual of OutDoor/Indoor do-it-yourself projects. This book is a quick read with adaquate illustrations depicting vital home upkeep/improvement projects in simple lay terms. Sport reading for the seasoned professional, critical for would-be's.

Book Description

This book features all-new projects aimed at the hottest trend in garden and yard decoration - rustic structures and accents made from green wood, soldered copper, weathered wood, rough cedar, unfinished iron, and other common materials. Rustic ornaments and structures now dominate most upscale landscape centers and arboretums - some structures sell for hundreds of dollars, using materials that can be acquired for a few dollars. Given the expense of these pieces of yard art, the cost savings offered by doing it yourself are enormous. The book opens with an idea section demonstrating how rustic structures and accents can transform the look of a landscape. This is followed by a section showing where to find green wood and other materials, and how to work with them. The heart of the book is 20 plans and step-by-step directions for a wide range of projects. Projects include: rustic bird houses and wildlife feeders made from weathered cedar; arbors and trellises made from rough willow branches; a garden bench made from bark-on branches shaped by an ax; a garden obelisk made from soldered copper allowed to weather; woven-twig garden edging. The projects are remarkably easy to build, and most can be completed in a single weekend. Dawn King has taught the art of building bark-on garden art pieces at the McLaughlin Woodworking Museum in Kingston, Ontario, and her work has been featured in magazines. She lives in Perth, Ontario.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-06-30

Great book. Has good instructions and lots of projects. I have already built a 2 trellises based on this book, and am getting ready to start on some chairs.

5 out of 5 stars Alot of fun!.......2007-05-17

I just attended my 3rd course with Dawn King. If you can take a course with her it is well worth it! The book is easy to follow and the projects actually end up looking like the pictures in the book!! Dawn is a super teacher with a light hearted approach. 5 stars for her and her book.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-08-09

This book has photos of some neat projects, however, there is one page of basic 'instructions' which is not helpful at all. There is no advice on selecting wood/branches, bending them, curing them, finishing/varnishing etc., nor is there instruction (except for screws and a very basic tenon on the aforementioned instruction page)on how to attach the pieces. The only 'directions' are simple illustrations of what order to put the pieces together in. A real disappointment.

    Book Description

Energizing, Inspiring, Edible, and Exciting: That’s what bestselling author Katherine Whiteside says gardening ought to be. Whether you have a half acre of land in the country or a tiny patch of grass in the city, whether you’re an experienced digger or you’ve never held a trowel, Whiteside offers forty-one versatile projects that will make anyone into a proud gardener.

In The Way We Garden Now, Whiteside, known as House Beautiful’s Garden Goddess, tackles every aspect of creating beautiful and personal gardens, from making a new bed to adding decorative details. Always down-to-earth, Whiteside believes that “fretting over having a perfect garden is not fun, but getting out there and accomplishing basic garden goals will always leave you happily fulfilled.” To that end, she shows how to create the garden that’s just right for you by mixing and matching projects according to your skill level, space limitations, climate, and even how much time you have. The Way We Garden Now is graced with whimsical watercolors, fun sidebars, and Whiteside’s expert tips. In five accessible sections, she teaches you how to:

-Get going with ten easy, manageable projects that will turn your yard into a garden while helping you master basic garden chores
-Surmount design dilemmas with solutions such
    as hedges, paths, and patios
    -Organize ornamentals—from containers to a

-Add edibles: Start a small salad garden that can evolve into an organic herb and vegetable potager
-Be a gardener for all seasons with summer bulbs, winter gardens, spring shows, and more...

With all the information about the supplies you’ll need, preparations to make, and even a helpful rating of how big an undertaking each project is, this is an indispensable book from a wise and witty mentor—a gardener who has been there and tried that.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT ADDITION TO YOUR LIBRARY - RECOMMEND HIGHLY.......2005-09-07

I have been a "birder" for over 45 years and a gardener (in a very sloppy, haphazard way) for just about as long. This is a wonderul work that fits well into my hobbies. It is simple, practical and a joy to work with. As another reviewer pointed out, the ideas put forth in this book actually work! I was also thrilled that most of these projects were ones that my four grandsons were more than able to help with and in doing so, actually taught them something. I happen to live in a rural area, infact, I live in the middle of the woods. Most of the projects in this book were non-intrusive and blended in well with the natural look that my wife and I strive for. Recommend you add this one to your library. Now if I can just train my nine barn cats......

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Informative and visually stunning.......2006-02-04

The photos in this book are enough to attract any aspiring homeowner to read through this wonderful book about remodeling.

Tastefully done, and covering all angles of remodeling, I found this book very informative as well. It covers additions, interior improvements, facelifts, curb appeal, enhancing your space, and much more; and all sections are aided by beautiful, breathtaking photos that will surely make you dream of having something similar to wake up to every day. It inspired me to go through my house, room by room, and reassessing everything.

    Well done!

5 out of 5 stars A good buy for everyone.......2002-12-14

I'm not planning on remodeling my home in the near future, but after looking through this book, I had to buy it. The information is useful to both people who are and who are not planning on remodeling.

Benefits for those who are going to remodel:
This book is jammed backed with information! It shows you how to evaluate your house and neighborhood before you remodel, how to "finesse" a floorplan and what is involved with remodeling (e.g. the section on working with contractors), it discusses potential problems and pitfalls to avoid when remodeling, it has case studies (the problem, "the program," the cure), it has information on both interior and exterior remodeling with special sections on bathrooms and kitchens. It discusses different materials and many different types of changes you can make to your house.

Benefits for both interior design junkies and those who are just starting out:
This book is a good primer on both interior and exterior design. It cotains general information on house types and exterior color combinations. This book has a section on how to enhance existing interior space, and the pictures throughout the book can be used as inspiration for redecorating projects, in addition to remodeling projects.

Minuses: There is only one interior style represented here, a mix of traditional and country. The exteriors are primarily arts & crafts and traditional styles. I'm sure the style was created to appeal to the broadest range of people, which is a plus for the publishers, but a drawback to those who have a more individual style. However, I think that the information on remodeling can be applied to many styles.

    Recommendation:
I would recommend this book to anyone!

4 out of 5 stars remodeling project basics plus allowance for "youness".......2000-05-29

Lots of "need-to-know" information about basics of structural remodeling and personality remodeling for each and every room / each and every nook and cranny of your home. Ideas given are able to be adapted to your own style, desires or needs. Lots of GREAT pictures add much to what this book is all about! 1

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Landscaping Book.......2007-06-05

I compared several landscaping books before buying this one. I viewed them in bookstores and at home depot. This one has excellent ideas and instructions, and I especially like the photographs which are very detailed and add clarity to the instructions with visual aids. I am very happy with my purchase.

    Book Description

No one can deny the power and attraction of water features. And it's never been easier for gardeners to add the sparkle and serenity of water to their own landscapes. Garden centers and flower shows throughout North America provide both the tools and the inspiration; this book will give readers the know-how.

Projects range from simple to more advanced. Readers can choose among a classic wall-mounted fountaio spout, a traditional or contemporary cascade and garden pond, an authentic Japanese-style bamboo water pump, witty water sculptures, and more. With 16 projects in all, this book has something to offer all tastes, budgets, and abilities.

Each project is accompanied by clear, step-by-step photographs and easy-to-follow instructions, plus helpful tips and techniques. Also included is a list of tools and materials. Whether readers imagine a container bog garden, a romantic millstone fountain, or a cascade, this book will help them make it a reality.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Ideas!.......2006-07-21

This book has some good information, great design ideas,
and beautiful pictures. My pond is up and running, and
the fishies and frogs and water lillies are VERY Happy.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Helpful Aid .......2004-11-25

For anyone wanting to learn how to add water to their yard, this is the book to get. I loved it because the projects are easy to follow and there aren't any steps that you will not be able to do.
The information at the front of the book lays out a good foundation for the projects that you will find throughout the book. From everything such as designing, planning and the tools you will need, to maintenance and the many projects; this book will lead the path to having the calming effect of water in your yard.
The illustrations and photography just add to how helpful and very informative this book really is. This book would make a great gift for any gardener.

    3 out of 5 stars Ho hum.......2003-08-06

This a basic slim book that does just what the writers promise. They show the novice gardener how to make 16 water features. There are assorted fountains, including a romantic fountain, bell fountain, perpetual water tap, a cascade and a glass waterfall. There is a still pond, a wall waterspout a cascade and a natural pond. It's fairly standard stuff but there are, after all, only so many ways to present simple how-to-do-it water feature information.

There are useful sections on tools, materials and pumps, and you'll find plenty of illustrations, including cross-sections of the construction project.

There is no bibliography, just a reading list that is really tacky because it only lists other books published by the same publisher. Unless you're new to gardening I'd stay away from books published by Storey. There is nothing basically wrong with them, but they lack the depth, originality and insight that the more experienced gardener generally seeks.

5 out of 5 stars Your Garden Will Be Alive - With the Sound of Water.......2001-05-17

Do you like the refreshing sound of lemonade trickling into a glass, only you wish it would last longer? The relaxing sound of running water is refreshing and also attracts wildlife. This book has 16 projects you can build, most quite easily, with simple, readily available materials that will add sound and visual interest to your yard.

The book has information about tools, materials and plants, well illustrated with photographs and watercolor drawings. There are even maintenance tips. Some of the projects are as small as container fountains and some as large as ponds. They even discuss "bog gardening." Most of the designs fall in the small to medium size range.

Among the more interesting projects is a "Japanese Deer Scarer" which is an animated bamboo fixture that beats on a rock while dumping water. Also unique is a "Wine Bottle Spray Fountain." (We are avidly gathering the materials for this one as I write.) There are several that utilize sheet copper parts and one made from glass bricks.

There are lots of good tips on design that you can use for your own variations. If you are only going to buy one book on outdoor water features, get this one. It is sure to be an inspiration for your next weekend "water" project.
