    Book Description

Hang up your shovel and trowel! Now you can use the time (and money) you save laboring in your garden to actually enjoy it. Drawing on the amazingly simple layering sys-tem of gardening developed in her previous 'lasagna gardening' books, Patricia Lanza applies these principles to the ever-popular topic of growing herbs. Her organic, commonsense approach uses natural ingredients, close planting, and generous mulching, with little or no fancy equipment. Here she shares her homegrown methods, based upon almost 50 years of experience, to give readers tips on: lUsing more than 50 favorite herbs in recipes lMaking herbal wreaths and creating delicious herbal teas lUsing herbs for aromatherapy and potpourri lGrowing and using edible flowers This is the perfect book for all the busy people who want to reap the rewards of a garden but who lack the time, the energy, or the confidence to get down in the dirt. Accomplished and amateur gardeners alike will love this ingenious process that allows you to create beautiful, productive, low-maintenance herb gardens.

5 out of 5 stars Worth Trying ..............2005-04-12

First things first, this book was great fun to read. The author writes with passion on her subject and clearly has a great love of this topic. It really does shine through. The description of different herbs is workman like and covers off on all the kitchen herbs in everyday use.

The book is punctuated by some interesting recipes. Those that I have tried I like.

Now getting down in the dirt: lasagna gardening is a combination of using composted materials coupled with a layer of news papers between the soil and the compost to eliminate weeds. Preparing rich compost from kitchen waste is something I do already, the use of newspaper as a weed suppressant is something I would never of thought of (very logical though). I love the thought of minimal work.

In general herbs can do very well in dry sandy soil and will tolerate poor conditions. My main problems are countering winter cold.

The technique outlined should be great for raised bed and limited space gardening. I plan to try out the technique on a small area, for growing annual herbs. I plan to document my progress on my blog page (check out if interested):

Great book, well worth a read if you want to try something different. Very out of the box thinking.

We think of herbs as food, or as medicine, but we don't often think of them as aesthetic objects. Gardeners are taught to grow herbs for a reason--these are plants that should be harvested. The author of Landscaping with Herbs, James Adams, aims to show readers how to appreciate herbs as decorative plants. He wants to illuminate their hidden potential, their "other half." Because herbs are so integral to our lives, Adams believes they should be more integral to the garden, sharing in a gardener's landscaping fantasy as much as tulips or magnolia trees.

This coffee-table book is mostly text, with a few scattered photographs, and the prose is a dense mixture of ideas. A chemist by trade, Adams has a complex mind, even going so far as to classify "the volatiles that we perceive as odors released by both flowers and foliage." One highlight: a section on the many ways to landscape a fragrant herbal garden, scattering jasmine and rosemary so that each garden room is flooded by a distinct natural perfume. --Emily White

    Book Description

This book is a veritable treasure-trove of garden, landscaping and herbal information and lore, presenting a variety of landscaping designs complete with layout plans. James Adams includes descriptions of the more than 600 herbs incorporated in the plans, recipes, medicinal uses, cultural requirements, herbs for a fragrant garden, useful charts and tables, and splendid line drawings and illustrations. This is a book that herb enthusiasts as well as general gardeners will want to have on their shelves.

5 out of 5 stars Herbs Aren't Just for Cooking Anymore!.......2002-01-19

This is an idea book. A book that every time it's read another point of interest is noted. Mr. Adams really loves his herbs and wants to make a successful herb gardener out of each of us. More than that, though, he wants us to expand the way we think of herbs to include common culinary herbs in our landscape.

There are six major chapters that include; creating a Fragrant Garden, a Formal Garden for Beauty, a Beneficial Formal Garden, an Informal Landscape, a Contemporary Landscape, and a Wild Landscape.

Much appreciated is how each chapter introduces the reader to a myriad of herbs including specific named varieties of well known herbs. For instance, instead of just Thyme, many different Thymes are mentioned and discussed and often a photograph of that plant is included. Also, in each chapter are plans for using the herbs and several color photos of the herbs actually being used in the landscape. This realistic view of the plants is a big help when choosing plants for the landscape.

There are also useful, fun tidbits on many other aspects of using herbs including information on Topiary Training, Knot Gardens and Kitchen Gardens. There are recipes too, like Meatballs with Lovage, Oregano, Savory and Basil, that make use of the herbs we grow.

A handy chart at the back of the book lists each plant and many of its physical characteristics such as zone and bloom season. There is also a use chart which lists the landscape use and herbal use of each plant.

It is easy to see why this book was honored by the American Horticultural Society as a Great American Gardening Book.

5 out of 5 stars Herbs are Special.......2002-01-11

More and more people are realizing that herbs are special. In the garden they not only provide texture and fragrance, but they are also waterwise. This previously published book, now in paperback, provides the reader with information on more than 600 species and cultivars of herbs. John Adams explains how to use these herbs in a variety of garden types both formal and informal. Through this book I was introduced to new thyme species and prompted to plant a thyme garden.

This is the first book I have seen on the use of herbs as bonsai material. It is great book. It is informative and very descriptive with many black and white illustrations used to help explain text. Having only one-hundred pages, it is packed full of information on selecting herbs (including author recommended choices) suitable for use as bonsai. Training, developing, potting, shaping, caring for, and displaying herbal bonsai are all covered in detail. References and resources include mail-order nurseries. Terrific for beginners who don't want to invest a lot of money, but would like to try their hand at this hobby.

      • Clear directions for growing and using many wild and cultivated herbs.

      • Detailed pen-and-ink drawings help readers identify 70 herbs.

With irresistible enthusiasm and an endless store of knowledge about the plant kingdom, herbalist Adele Dawson traces the human-plant relationship through the seasons, providing practical and enlightening information about every aspect of herbalism, including spring foraging, summer gourmet gardening, the preparation of remedies in autumn, and the brewing of healing potions in winter. The mysteries of preparing infusions, decoctions, tinctures, and essences are unraveled through the author's clear and cohesive chapters on how to identify, collect, and preserve herbs. Detailed pen-and-ink drawings show the essential elements of flower and leaf anatomy as well as 70 wild and cultivated plants in their budding, blossoming, and dormant stages. Sprinkled throughout the text are recipes for impromptu wild feasts such as milkweed buds tempura, directions for soothing hand lotions of marigold and milk, and an enormous variety of medicinal and culinary teas. 5 out of 5 stars Blessed Gardens loves Dawson's Herbs.......2007-09-04

Adele Dawson's "Herbs: Partners in Life" is a great garden companion. There is much detail on the art of gardening, cooking, and healing with wild plants. It serves itself up as a great read and a source for quick information.

I liked Dawson's voice. She conveyed much reverence--not only for the plants, but for the reader as well. I enjoyed the well-placed historical anecdotes, and came away feeling enriched.

One of my favorite stories centers around the 17th century pastor, Cotton Mather. During his time, if a woman was caught dabbling with herbs, she was accused of witchcraft and often hung or burned at the stake. However, Pastor Mather praised the 'gentlewoman' that kept a closet of 'harmless' herbs. He, himself, encouraged his congregation to chew on the 'Bible leaf' herb, costmary, because it had a stimulant effect and was often the only thing that would keep his listeners awake through his lengthy, and dare I say boring, sermons.

"Herbs: Partners in Life" brims with beautiful and detailed illustrations of each herb and flowering plant. Dawson also provides natural remedies for a spectrum of ailments from high blood pressure to bronchitis, with simple instructions and the occasional song or blessing.

Make "Herbs: Partners in Life" your partner in the garden, and start using wild plants to enhance your quality of life.

The Village Herbalist is a long overdue love letter to all of us who serve our communities as herbalists.
Covering every aspect of herbal practice, from setting up a business, practical tips, information on making preparations, to questions of ethical practices and some of the internal/political struggles concerning the herbal community, this book will give those interested in herbalism as a livlihood a good sense of what to expect.
My favorite aspect of "The Village Herbalist" is the many profiles of practicing herbalists scattered throughout the book, along with quotes from other herbalists concerning their opinions on the various topics covered.
My initial reaction was to sit down and devour this attractive and well illustrated book, but my instincts told me to read slowly and savor it instead.

As an Herb Educator/Speaker I find she gives accurate and well written herbal history to use in my presentations.I turn to her books often.

Livind With Herbs is a great read. Try making "Jo Ann's Kitchen & Garden Herb Salt" on page 186. If you don't already grow the herbs in this recipe (or any other metioned in the book) Jo Ann gives you the advice to make you feel you can succeed .

4 out of 5 stars Still useful, if slightly dated..........2005-07-20

Pick up the May/June issue of The American Gardener or September issue of Herb Companion and you will find an article by Jo Ann Gardner about herbs. Gardner wrote LIVING WITH HERBS a few years back, so in some ways the information in her book should reflect her thinking then, while the articles should reflect her experiences since writing the book. For example, she began harvesting herbs drying them in bunches (some not all herbs dry well using this approach) and discovered that other ways of preserving the essences of the herbs worked better with some plants. First she used string and then she moved to the use of rubber bands. I too use rubber bands because they contract as the herb stems shrink, and you are less likely to loose a bunch of dried herbs. And, while Gardner eschews them, I use paper sacks as they catch falling material, particularly lavender buds/blossoms and the like. However, the current Herb Companion shows a photo accompanying Gardners article where of bunches of herbs are drying on a nifty `under-window' rack, and tied with string, some stems are falling on the floor!!

Gardner says some herbs dry best hanging in bunches and some on drying racks (you can cheat by drying some of them in an oven on low heat), and some should be macerated while green and frozen or put up or in jars of oil or vinegar. LIVING WITH HERBS is a useful book, because you not only read about Gardner's experience with 100 or so of her favorite herbs (growing, preserving, using) you also discover some culinary applications (jellies, rolls, breads, salts, etc.) If you don't grown herbs yourself, you can order them from a number of sources. Gardner has provided a useful if somewhat out-of-date bibliography that lists books and sources she prefers, but her gardening information is still useful.

      5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book!!.......1998-12-10

This book was so helpful. I went to the library for books on herb gardening and returned home with a bag full. This book was the only one I felt compelled to purchase. It contains tons of great information accompanied by interesting annecdotes. This book is a must for anyone interested in growing and--more importantly--using herbs everyday. Oh, it also has lots of great recipes!!

      5 out of 5 stars Refreshing........1998-12-05

" Though herb books are everywhere you turn these days, a classic guide for the home gardener hasn't been produced in my opinion since Adelma Simmons'HERB GARDENING IN FIVE SEASONS. Until now. Jo Ann Gardener's new book should be the herb classic for this generation. It was refreshing to read an herb book so full of deep, personal, first hand knowledge...Gardener grows her herbs in the harsh environs of a farm on a windy peninsula in Cape Breton. Isolated, with no phone or vehicle, she's has to rely on her resourcefulness to make her herb gardens work. They became so abundant she was able to start her own business, "Jo Ann's Kitchen & Garden". In her book, she shares all the methods she's developed over the years for growing and harvesting herbs, using them in the home and intergrating them into the landscape. Though I've looked through lots of herb books over the years, I found many, many fresh original ideas here. In the heart of the book, "The Herbs in MY Life: 74 Herb Portraits" all the information is based on Gardener's experience. They are deeply personal rather than encyclopedic and a true joy to read...A definite classic for the herb garden book shelf. Pinetree Garden Seeds Catalog, New Gloucester, Maine"

5 out of 5 stars Memories of Sector.......2000-11-22

This book is Linda's best. I have them all, being part of her family. She has captured the lifestyle and history of this part of West Virginia and combined it perfectly with her herbal lore. This book is just not for the hebalist but would be enjoyed by everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Makes me homesick!.......2000-09-06

This beautiful book is bursting with information and wonderful word pictures. I would read it without the info about herbs just for the trip back to the Appalachian mountains I love and miss. However, the information is very interesting and helpful to anyone who wants to make use of the "everyday" plants that are around us. Great book!

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2000-06-13

What a beautiful book! Rago's writing is more poetry than prose, and really captures the beauty of what must be a wonderous place. Never before have I wanted to travel to West Virginia so much! The legends she weaves are fascinating, and the recipes are fun and easy to make. Try the West Virginia Blackberry Cobbler-delicious!

      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful!.......2000-06-10

Initially, I bought Blackberry Cove Herbal as a wedding shower gift for my sister, but after looking through the book, I ended up keeping it for myself and buying her another copy. What a lovely book! The illustrations are beautiful, especially the paintings by Toni Walker. I am not someone who uses herbs or is terribly interested in that whole lifestyle, but this book is a wonderful story and reference tool.
