The problem with this book is that most of the shown arrangements are plainly not beautiful. They don't look balanced as real ikebana should look, containers don't seem suitable for flowers, color combinations are not always harmonious, and in many cases it is not clear why this is called ikebana at all. There are some pieces of useful information such as diagrams, tools, and tips, but I don't think it reasonable to buy the book for those 10 pages (like I did).
There is a really great book on ikebana: "The art of arranging flowers; a complete guide to Japanese ikebana" by Shozo Sato, but it is out of print I am afraid. I got this book to go with Origami Flowers by Hiromi Hayashi. Reiko Takenaka does a good job explaining how to make an arrangement that looks like the pictures, with step by step instructions and clear diagrams. Some of the containers seem to clash with the flowers, and some of the special occasions arrangements are lost in translation for someone not intimately familiar with Japanese culture like me. My only real criticism, however, is that the book does not really explain any principles about why and how and what looks good - it's more a menu to find an arrangement that looks nice in the picture and repeat it.

This is a clearly written, well thought out explanation of the basics of Ikebana. The photographs demonstrating the combinations of materials, and their height relative to each other, are great as examples for beginners. Many ikebana teachers don't speak English well, so this book is useful for a cross reference for something you were taught in class. One problem - there are many schools of ikebana so the book has to be quite generic in its explanations, which is not necessarily how your particular school may approach a certain principle. But again, as a study supplement to a class, it works well.

Many ikebana books shows a very traditional way of arranging flower. This book, however, shows a simpler and more modern way arrangement with the result of nice and unusual looks of flower arrangement. The step-by-step is helpful and quite detailed. The book shows lots of different variations for cool vases or containers as well.

This book is a pleasure to read and look at even if you don't do flower arranging. The illustrations are beautiful and the writing is clear and direct. I bought multiple copies and gave them to clients for holiday presents, and it was very well received.

I bought this book because I love having flowers in my home, but I'm not very good at arranging them. I also bought the book because I like the spareness, the openness of Ikebana. What I especially like about this book is its simple illustrations that explain the various concepts, and that are easy to follow. I also like that it presents arrangements for each of the seasons. This book has definitely been worth the money. I highly recommend it!
Beautiful Photos.......2007-01-08
I bought this book for the pleasure of viewing, rather than of flower-arranging. The book does a very concise explaining of What is ikebana? and of The Techniques. The picture instructions are simple and easy to follow.
What I love most about the book is the careful and thoughtful planning and presentation of ikebana through the seasons.
I've compared this book to other books at the bookstore, and this by far the only one that lived up to the philosophy and practice of Japanese aesthetics. From what I've read on Zen and its philosophy, there is a concept of "ma" and "wa" - one of which is about enough "blank space" around the art form, that helps the eye to appreciate the quality and beauty of lines / texture / forms / space. This book complies to that philosophy.
I am pleased with the quality of paper, and the general layout of the photos, and there is enough text to support each selected flower-arrangement which is helpful to someone who does not know much about the specific aesthetic discipline that is ikebana.

Arrangements in diverse locations show just how modern ikebana can be. A wonderful read, whether as a guide to ikebana or as a coffee table book.

Ikebana is perhaps the most well-known and actively practiced of all Japan's traditional arts. Its origin dates back over six-centuries and it continues to be a vital art form today. There are numerous schools of ikebana, each with its own set of rules and techniques. One such school is the
Ichiyo School. Ichiyo, pronounce ee-chee-yo, meaning "one leaf" in Japanese, refers to the logo of the school. The School was founded in 1937 by a brother and sister, Meikof and Ichiyo Kasuya, who sought to create original ikebana that would be more suitable for modern lifestyles and environments.
Today the Ichiyo School instructs students worldwide and in 1996 the School founded centers for instruction both in Europe and the United States. They focus on two types of flower arrangement: one to fit diversified personal surroundings, from traditional Japanese tokonoma, or alcoves, to Western
entry tables, and another for public spaces, from stage settings to hotel lobbies.

If you love to learn flower arrangement but are frustrated by pretty books that don't show you HOW to make an arrangement, this is the book for you! There are detailed step-by-step instructions for each arrangement. As one of the reviewer had mentioned, the only shortcoming for this book is that some plant material may not be available in the US. Still, I don't see this as too much of an issue as it is not too difficult to substitute native plants with similar look and color. I highly recommend this to ikebana neophytes.

A most inspiring book on the essence of form and beauty........1998-08-19
Ms. Takenaka is a remarkable artist. Her ability to combine shape and texture of natural (and man-made) materials to reveal the simple elegance of Japanese style is inspiring. Each of the 60 or so examples have reasonable instructions. I gave it only 4 stars because some of the plant materials are not readily available and alternatives are not suggested. Nevertheless this book will generate many ideas of your own.

What becomes abundantly clear as one reads through this bok is that H.E. Davey writes from experience. He has practised several of the "ways" to a very high level, and he is able to write about his experiences in a readable, almost conversational manner. He sees quite deeply into the heart of Japanese culture, taking the reader along a path of understanding and discovery as he presents the key concepts of that tradition. In addition to the text, the marginal reminders and definitions of the key concepts reinforce what one has already encountered in the text, and serve as a glossary of important terms. Davey provides exercizes to try at home, as well. All in all, this is a first-rate book -- helpful, accessible, accurate, and often profound.
