    Book Description

With few exceptions-such as corn and pumpkins-everything edible that's grown in a traditional garden can be raised in a container. And with only one exception-watering-container gardening is a whole lot easier. Beginning with the down-to-earth basics of soil, sun and water, fertilizer, seeds and propagation, The Bountiful Container is an extraordinarily complete, plant-by-plant guide.

Written by two seasoned container gardeners and writers, The Bountiful Container covers Vegetables-not just tomatoes (17 varieties) and peppers (19 varieties), butharicots verts, fava beans, Thumbelina carrots, Chioggia beets, and sugarsnap peas. Herbs, from basil to thyme, and including bay leaves, fennel, and saffron crocus. Edible Flowers, such as begonias, calendula, pansies, violets, and roses. And perhaps most surprising, Fruits, including apples, peaches, Meyer lemons, blueberries, currants, and figs-yes, even in the colder parts of the country. (Another benefit of container gardening: You can bring the less hardy perennials in over the winter.) There are theme gardens (an Italian cook's garden, a Four Seasons garden), lists of sources, and dozens of sidebars on everything from how to be a human honeybee to seeds that are All America Selections.

Roz is a woman of independent means who thinks love is all in the past-but she's about to be taken by surprise.

Number-one bestselling author Nora Roberts presents the second novel of her In the Garden trilogy, as three women discover the secrets from the past contained within their historic home.

Another of Nora's books that grabs you within the first 10 pages, but this book is a little slower than the Blue Dahlia.

This was a very good trilogy. It will keep you interested to the last page!

    5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2007-04-12

All three books in the trilogy will go on my keeper shelf forever. I love books that are connected through women who become close friends.

Saving Graces is another favorite of mine, although there all three heroines get their stories within one book. The Saving Graces: A Novel

And I just started a new 4 book mini series that feature 4 women who are thrown together in adversity and end up friends as they fight for their lives. Secret Contract (Harlequin Intrigue Series)

5 out of 5 stars The best of Nora Roberts.......2007-02-15

This is my favorite Nora Roberts book. I am an avid gardener, so the setting of the garden center, and details of the business was an added bonus. The characters in all her books seem real, but never more than in the In The Garden series. I love the balance of personalities, and their wonderful interaction. I felt as if I knew these people! When I started reading Black Rose it was like visiting old friends. Black Rose is my favorite, I think, because it is centered on Roz. She is such a strong woman, but does not let her strength take away from her warmth and femininity. I usually pass on my paperbacks to the library, but will not give away the In The Garden series. I have read them several times and enjoyed them each time!

    5 out of 5 stars Great read.......2007-02-09

Nora Roberts has done it again. The way she brings characters to life is enchanting. I loved reading this part of the trilogy and following the lives of the women involved. I especially loved the plot line of the Harper Bride. Needless to say, the gardens were an intricate part of this book and their descriptions were just lovely.

I Never Promised You a Rose Garden is the story of a sixteen-year-old who retreats from reality into the bondage of a lushly imagined but threatening kingdom, and her slow and painful journey back to sanity.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Regardless of her actual diagnosis, a great read.......2007-08-01

INPYARG is a well-written book from the perspective of a highly intelligent adolescent girl. Recent mental health professionals that have analyzed the work do not see her symptomology as schizophrenic/psychotic, but as severe depression, loneliness, and possibly autism, a combination of which led to her "creative" inner detached world.
Regardless of what her diagnosis may be today, Green does a wonderful job of capturing the mindset of someone with severe mental illness who is crying for help and simultaneously fears the change that is associated with mental health. A must read for anyone in the field, and highly recommended to anyone else looking for a good read.

    3 out of 5 stars Vivid Unreality.......2007-06-14

Deborah is sixteen years old and for years has known that something is not right with her. She always feels isolated from others, unable to make friends and to make good connections with the world. Her parents like to pretend that everything is fine, though, and nothing is wrong with her at all. They have a status to keep up, and having something wrong with their daughter would reflect badly on them. But finally Deborah is so sure something is wrong, she has to do something about it. She makes a feeble attempt to kil herself by giving herself small cuts on her wrist. The result of this cry for help is a stay in a mental hospital, where she is finally able to meet with a doctor who will help her to figure out what is wrong and how she can go about fixing it.

This story follows Deborah's thoughts as well as the thoughts of her doctor, an older woman who has never seen a patient as young as Deborah but who thinks she will be able to help. Through their therapy sessions, the doctor learns that Deborah has been living her entire existence in a fantasy world that exists in her own mind, with its own language, gods, rules, and logic. The doctor's challenge then becomes to teach Deborah about the real world around her, so she will be able to decide whether she wants to continue to live in this fantasy of her own creation or to live in the real world with other people.

It was fascinating to read about a fantasy world that was so vivid, it could overshadow reality. I felt like I gained a better understanding of how terrifying and disorienting a disease like schizophrenia would be. Although I don't know how realistic the treatment aspect of this book was, I liked the mental illness descriptions.

    1 out of 5 stars eye-roller.......2006-12-13

I've been trying to finish this book for about 2 years now and everytime I pick it up I roll my eyes at each instance of her slipping into her fantasy world.

The book's language is way too advanced to describe a young teen and seems more like it was written by the psychiatrist instead of 3rd person narration. Every time the fantasy world is described I keep imagining the author sitting at her typewriter trying to invent nonsense words.

Everytime I try to keep reading I want to throw it into traffic.

3 out of 5 stars A look into the life of a girl suffering from schizoprenia.........2006-12-06

I thought this was a good book. For me personally, it wasn't the type of book I would always choose, and I couldn't really get into it. It took me awhile to finally get intreseted in the book, so it was easy for me to forget about it and set it asid.I Never Promised You a Rose Garden was an extremely well written book. It goes into great detail about a teenager suffering from schizophrenia. In my opinion though, it was a bit slow moving, and it could be confusing at times. When I first began reading the book I was confused because it didn't state that she had schizophrenia right away. Therefore, when it went from the real world to Deborah's world I got confused at times, until I finally found out exactly what the problem was with her, 18 pages into the book.

I Never Promised You a Rose Garden tells the story about a 16-year old girl, Deborah Blau suffering from schizophrenia. She is brought to a mental hospital, without her consent, in an attempt to make her situation better. Her mother and father keep her condition quiet, and they don't even tell their youngest daughter, Suzy, the real reason why her sister was taken away, and why she will be gone for such a long period of time. This books tells you about Deborah's journey from a world of her own, back to the real world, hopefully to her own light at the end of the tunnel.

I recommend this book to teenagers, around the ages of 14 and up. I would also say that you should be able to comprehend things easily because towards the beginning of the book the lack of detail of what was going on, and exactly what was wrong with Deborah made it hard to understand.

5 out of 5 stars Not Your Typical Beach Read.......2006-08-25

Living in two separate worlds is an idea that seems to only be portrayed in science fiction or fantasy novels. However, for Deborah Blau, this concept is part of her reality. I Never Promised You a Rose Garden reveals the story of Deborah, an adolescent diagnosed with schizophrenia who comes from a background of mixed feelings within her immediate family, an overpowering grandfather that holds expectations for her that seem almost out of reach, and anti-Semitic discrimination from her peers. Instead of a lengthy exposition, the plot begins with Deborah's parents finally making the decision to remove her from high school and send her to a mental institution for intense psychological treatment.
The reader learns about Deborah's dark history and the deep processes of her mind through her thoughts and consultations with her therapist, Dr. Fried. Since setting is primarily in the different wards of the mental facility, leaving little room for any major plot development outside of Deborah's successes and failures while receiving treatment, the character development is paramount in this novel. The author, Joanne Greenberg, does a superb job of depicting dysfunctional characters that not only serve the purpose of comic relief because of their erratic behavior, but also reveal deeper, more melancholic aspects of the life of a mentally ill individual.
Greenberg juxtaposes the horror of mental illness with the relative safety it provides for the affected from facing the challenges of the real world. This is the core of Deborah's conflict within her mind. She must decide between her imaginary place, Yr, that offers safety yet keeps her locked away from the world, or she must face her fears and experience life with both its challenges and opportunities. The friendships that she makes in the institution highlight the novel's stress on the importance of building relationships for personal growth and allow her to accept the fact that most people have problems and possess the ability to work through them.
Dr. Fried is the epitome of a knowledgeable, patient, and committed therapist that is dedicated to helping Deborah release herself from the depths of Yr and to bringing her back to a relatively normal life. Though the novel is focused on Deborah's life in the mental facility, there are several parts that allow the reader to experience, through heartfelt descriptions, the effect that her institutionalization has on her family. Her parents learn to accept and ward off judgments from others that stem from Deborah's "label" of being mentally unstable. Despite their problems, the Blau family members are readily supportive of Deborah and hope for a successful recovery.
I Never Promised You a Rose Garden is an absolutely fascinating book because it provides clear insight into the complicated lives of the mentally ill and stresses that people should neither fear nor revere these individuals due to their altered state of consciousness. Rather, society should endeavor to view them and their issues in an unbiased manner, for there is not a person living without some type of challenge that he or she must face.

5 out of 5 stars Companion veggie gardening.......2007-01-10

I originally bought this book over 20 years ago from Rodale press and lost it in one of my many moves. It is an excellent resource for companion and inter-planting of flowers, many of which are edible, with vegetables. I now garden in containers and the concepts in this book lend themselves easily to this kind of gardening.

3 out of 5 stars More about "Other Secrets" than "Companion Planting".......2001-10-19

I was a bit disappointed in this book. There were some references as to what plants complement each other, and what ones are used to repel certain insects, but those references were too few and buried deep within certain textual descriptions of various plants. Many, if not most, plant references did not even have companion planting information. Then there were the chapters referring to cosmetics, fragrances, and skin care that better belonged in a health and beauty aid book. I will be looking for a different book to supply my needs on companion planting--but this time will preview the book at a bookstore or library so I know what I am getting.

5 out of 5 stars Companion planting at its finest.......2000-05-25

Roses Love Garlic is a great book for novice and experienced gardeners alike. For the beginning gardener, chapter 19 offers many sample garden plans for both small and large plots. The more experienced gardeners might enjoy chapters 12 and 13 which provide projects involve dried flowers and the use of natural dyes. My personal favorite is chapter 7, "Companion planting with flowers and herbs." This book is a must own for anyone interested in chemical free gardening.

    Book Description

Mike Shoup has put together hundreds of evocative photographs illustrating creative and imaginative gardens blended with Old Garden Roses. As owner of the Antique Rose Emporium Inc., Mike has created a business that has made these roses available to gardeners through mail order and through three display garden centers. Each center is in itself unique, and distinct from each other, due to their location in three different environments. He uses this experience to profile the best roses for their proven and most excellent garden use.

Among each rose profile, not only are there numerous sumptuous photographs, but also descriptive captions and side-bars that instruct the reader on how to best achieve the results seen. The experienced and novice gardener alike, from the forested East coast to the arid Texas plains, will find this book to be, not only beautiful to look at, but also a delight to read with its straightforward discussion. The book not only expresses the culture and placement of the rose in creative and sometimes whimsical gardens, but also the author's love of gardening in a personal, and at times, humorous way.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful book for rose lovers in the south.......2000-06-28

This is a valuable book for selecting antique roses that perform well in the southeast and southwestern areas of the U.S. After a brief introduction, chapters are arranged as follows: 1) Vigorous climbers 2) Mannerly climbers 3) Large shrubs 4) Small Shrubs 5) Specialty roses. Each variety is given a two page spread which contains a few paragraphs describing the rose and its habits and numerous photographs. The most valuable aspect are the photographs because they show how the rose grows in different situations, such as on a fence, an arbor, etc. There are close-ups of the rose and views of the entire plant. There is no horticultural advice, so this book can really only be used as a selection device. The photos alone, however, make this a worthy purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Review amendment from East Bay grower.......2000-11-06

When I first got this book I wasn't impressed with its layout. However, after using it and other reference books for 9 months I find it has the BEST photography for clarity when identifying a rose and it has roses listed that are not in other reference books. I've been able to identify some "mystery roses" because of the excellent and very natural appearance of the roses photographed. It's been an excellent reference source and I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars The Random House Book of Roses.......2000-03-18

Excellent illustrations, but not in alphabetical order within groups. The index will direct you if you are looking for a particular rose. Not as informative or comprehensive as the Ultimate Rose Book, which is my preference. But it would be a nice addition to your library.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential for a meaningful rose library!.......1998-07-28

Learning about roses from what's available in your local garden centers or through the major rose suppliers' catalogues doesn't even HINT at the incredible diversity of types of roses. This is a book to fire the imagination and open the eyes to extraordinary possibilities. The 1400 rose photographs are wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. The book uses a seldom seen and tremendously useful technique, in some cases, to show you roses of a certain category all laid out in a single perfect photograph. If you want, for example, a yellow rose, then its so useful to see them all together to compare and contrast their blooms. If appearance is a strong criteria in your rose selection and you'd like something besides the frequently average roses the commercial rose people are pushing, take a look at this book!

5 out of 5 stars Great pictorial coverage of many kinds of roses........1998-05-12

If you are looking for a book which will allow you to see many different kinds of roses, this is it. This book is packed with pictures of roses. An added bonus is that these pictures are not "perfect" pictures of roses - the roses are pictured as they would appear in your garden. Many are shown in all stages of bloom, from bud to full blown rose. There is a very interesting section on the history of roses, and many wild roses are shown growing in their countries of origin. The only thing I didn't care for about this book is that the roses are not arranged alphabetically within their divisions. However, use of the index makes it easy to look up any rose you might have in mind. This is a great book to dream over during the winter!

      2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-04-15

I really wanted to like this book because I love mysteries and gardening, and the author seems like a nice guy. However, by halfway through I was turning pages as fast as I could, not because it's a page-turner but because I wanted to be done with it. As another reviewer mentioned, the book is full of cliches and one-note good guys/bad guys. Poor dialogue, excessive irrelevant details, awkward use of Britishisms, and thoroughly unbelievable behavior on the part of the husband during the last part of the book (humorous comments on the weather, for example) made this hard to read. Definitely a 'first novel' - maybe he'll get better as he goes on.

1 out of 5 stars I'm disappointed in the reviews for this book.......2006-01-24

I picked up this book on a whim. I didn't know the author, but since I am a gardener and I enjoy mysteries and the reviews on the cover were favorable, I thought I would enjoy it.

The first few chapters were ok, interesting premise, likable characters, but after that it degenerated into a mawkish mess, with cliches that usually only tacky romance writers use.
Example: "It's only a flesh wound" says Alex about his friend being shot in the leg. And other gems such as "The man collapsed under the jarring impetus of Alex's perfectly executed rugby tackle." (As far as we know Alex doesn't play rugby, so why is it a rugby tackle?)and "What a stroke of luck it had been, her eavesdropping just at that very moment.":read ...needed a way to move the plot along.
This seemed very amatuerish to me and I am quited disappointed in Publisher Weekly and the Washington Post for recommending it.

      5 out of 5 stars A Great Summer Read.......2005-07-31

"The Blue Rose" is a great mystery novel and a great summer read. The story is brought to life with rich detail and interesting characters. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys a good mystery!

      2 out of 5 stars Hardly Engaging.......2005-04-26

I've read some of the other reviews, and I couldn't disagree more. This book is not a page-turner. I found myself skipping over whole sections of prose because they were boring and sometimes needless. The story is straighforward. Hardly any surprises. Hardly any twists or turns. Bad guys are always bad guys. Good guys are always good guys. There's no hidden agenda lurking through the story. The blue rose is a natural anomaly. The people who really want it -- the people willing to steal and kill for it -- are conveniently identified as people willing to steal and kill for the blue rose. There's no "mystery" here really. It's just a matter of getting to the end of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Beware the blue rose.......2004-12-23

When Kate and Alex Sheppard move into their dream house - a 19th century cottage complete with a walled garden - they make an exciting discovery - a rose bush in their garden sports blue flowers! Kate, a gardening enthusiast, knows that this mysterious rose could bring them worldwide fame and fortune. They try to remain calm and decide to seek advice from a botany professor and a lawyer. Despite their best efforts however, the secret is soon out, and the couple find themselves badgered by determined opportunists clamoring for the rose and a nightmare that includes kidnapping and murder.

This is Eglin's debut novel and it is a delightful page-turner. Gardeners will love the horticultural details thrown in and mystery fans will appreciate the well-paced plot and the author's attention to detail and believable dialog. This is an author to keep an eye on!

Burpee is a widely known and trusted name in the gardening world, and the Burpee Basics series of colorful growing guides to specific plant types is a great reference for novice gardeners. In Roses, Mary C. Weaver clearly presents the necessary information for beginning rose growers: how to select the right roses for your garden, prepare the soil, plant, fertilize, water, and prune. Rose growers have a distinct vocabulary, and the large section on rose varieties contains a helpful glossary to terms used throughout the book. This is also the section most eager readers will turn to first: it's packed with information on the different categories within the four basic classes (old roses, modern roses, shrub roses, and climbers and ramblers) and presents excellent descriptions of 100 rose varieties, with photographs of most. As if anxious not to leave any good candidates out, Weaver also gives lists of additional varieties in each category. A generous resource list in the appendix recommends additional reading and offers North American sources for roses and garden supplies, rose societies, Web sites, and newsletters. Concise, reasonably complete, and easy to use, this is a good first rose book for any rose-loving gardener.

      5 out of 5 stars A treasure of a book!!!.......1999-01-11

Exceedingly well researched and clearly presented, this book makes roses doable for everyone-no matter the climate, type of rose, or gardener's experience. There are terrific sections on choosing roses (grafting or own-root, grades, where to buy, etc.), planting, and general care. But the best part is "the rose gallery"-a list of 100 most carefree roses from among all the rose types, including old roses, modern ones, shrubs, and climbers. Weaver checked with some 70 rosarians, plant pathologists, and nursery growers in 40 states and weighed disease resistance, hardiness, general vigor, and overall performance to come up with the list. Each rose gets a good description and most have photos. A wonderful book.

      Book Description

When Ernest Hemingway committed suicide in 1961 he left four unfinished works--A Moveable Feast, Islands in the Stream, The Garden of Eden, and an untitled work on his travels in Africa. The edited versions that have come down to readers and scholars of Hemingway appear as distinct, disjointed texts that fit oddly into his oeuvre. Through extensive literary detective work Burwell has uncovered substantial evidence that Hemingway in fact designed the three published works as a trilogy, what she terms "his own Portrait of the Artist."

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking Study.......2005-09-28

This is the only in-depth scholarly work extant on the mass of unfinished books Hemingway left behind in 1961. Besides that, it is fluidly written, thoroughly documented, thoughtfully analyzed, and excellent in all respects.

It matters not whether or not the thesis -- that the posthumous works constitute a loose unified work -- holds up. To state it and explore it, as the author does, is to cast a lot of light on the very complex issue of Hemingway's last works and their difficult manuscripts. No one had even gone as far as to lay the groundwork for such a question before Burwell. Indeed it was doubtless necessary to proceed on some sort of hypothesis to go through these widely divergent manuscripts chronologically, as the author does, and to then present a coherent text of her own regarding her studies.

The author also has a great openness and sympathy for Hemingway and his tortured, insistent aestheticism. It shines through the entire work and raises it to a very rare level in modern literary criticism.
