Book Description
It may or may not be contagious. There seems to be no cure for it. Yet, Monmow Disease, a life-threatening condition that transforms a person into a dog-like beast, is not the only villain in this shocking triumph of a medical thriller by manga-god Osamu Tezuka. Said to have been the personal favorite of the artist, who held a degree in medicine, and surprisingly attentive to Christian themes and imagery, Ode to Kirihito demolishes naive notions about human nature and health and likely preconceptions about the comics master himself.
From pregnant vistas of the Japanese countryside to closed rooms full of sin and redemption, Tezuka astounds for more than eight hundred continuous pages, his art in turn easefully concise and flamboyantly experimental, his inquiry into our most repugnant instincts and prospects for overcoming them unflinchingly serious. Incorporating elements of the often lurid and adult-oriented “gekiga” style for the first time, Tezuka entered into his fruitful late period with this work.
A promising young doctor, Kirihito Osanai visits a remote Japanese mountain village to investigate the source of the latest medical mystery. While he ends up traveling the world to discover what it takes to be cured of such a disease, a conspiracy back home attempts to explain away his absence. Hinging upon his fate are those of his loved ones: an unstable childhood friend and colleague trapped between factions of the medical establishment that nurtured him; a fiancée emotionally transformed by Kirihito’s mysterious disappearance; and a stranger who becomes his guardian angel, a sensual circus-act performer with volatile psychological secrets.
From plutocratic Taipei and racially divided South Africa to backwater Arabia and modern Osaka, ambition and desire beckon “normal men” to behave uglier than any beast. Riveting our attention on deformity and its acceptance like The Elephant Man by David Lynch, Ode to Kirihito examines the true worth of human beings through and beyond appearances.

(Not a very good poem, but not very bad, either.).......2007-08-24
Kirihito
Gentle dog-faced doctor,
You wander such a difficult world.
Your self-importance, your violence,
emptied out by suffering,
You are more you now
Than before you had a dog's face.
This was the first "comic book" I had read since 1940. I read it in one sitting.
Awesome !.......2007-08-22
This is my 3rd Manga ever and I was simply blown away. I ordered this book along with Osamu's other Buddha titles. I had no intention of reading it at first glance because I had other more coveted titles, anyway I just took a while to browse it and I couldn't put it down for next 4 and half hrs till I finished it. Its hands down one of the most engrossing book. Osamu is simply brilliant and is a master story teller weaving all human emotions in this superbly crafted book. His brillance lies in developing each character and handling it in such a way that left you gasping and wonder how keen an observer Osamu was.
Epic and thrilling.......2007-07-25
If this were a film, it would surely be a mixture of art-house in moments and Cecil B DeMille in others -- with intimate character development but spanning Japan, China and the Middle East. It's thriller, love story, medical drama, spiritual quest, adventure and crime story with an eu de scifi wafting over the whole concotion. Typical Tezuka drawing style, which I find clear and compelling but others may have their own opinions.
Human Prosperity in the Face of Adversty.......2007-05-21
Ode To Kirihito is one of those stories that fills you with inspiration and hope. Tezuka doesn't hold any hands or make the world more gentle then it needs to be: the picture he paints is a very bleak one, filled with racism, elitism, selfishness and greed. And yet, we as humans can still somehow overcome all this.
This is an excellent manga, and I highly recommend to anybody who enjoys a great story.
What no American would ever do........2007-05-09
This is an amazing story and one that clearly no American would ever do. And I am referring to more then simply setting it in Japan. The blending of genres is something that Americans get touchy about, Americans like genres that are clear cut and a book that is part medical drama/part interntional adventure/part love story would put a lot of them off.

Customer Reviews:
Great book for beginners.......2007-09-25
My boyfriend and I are serious cooks but have never attempted much Indian. We found this book browsing in a small local book store and it's such a great find. First attempts at cooking last night resulted in some great dishes. Of course, we added a little more tumeric here and there, more pepper, and more garam masala, but it was a great place to start and has veggie dishes we like too. A great buy for the beginner!
Absolutely Fabulous!.......2007-07-09
If you love Indian food, you'll love this book. Fifty curries doesn't sound like very many for curry offcianados but this book is a great tour of what the Indian subcontinent has to offer. From regions all over India, each mouthwatering recipe is accompanied by full coloured pictures. Definitely a must buy to add to your curry collection.
Outstanding Cookbook.......2007-01-10
This is a wonderful cookbook. In addition to the detailed, but not overly complicated recipes, it has a good amount of basic information about ingredients. This is important, because many of the ingredients are new to non-Indian cooks.
I've been very happy with the recipes. Good photos of each dish, and a nice write up on each recipe, explaining the region where the it came from, and the cook or restaurant that created that it.
A wonderful range of curry recipes presented by an expert.......2007-01-05
This book not only provides some wonderful curry recipes from different parts of India but also helps clear a lot of misconceptions about curry and what it actually is!! A must have.
Camellia Panjabi knows her stuff.......2006-07-07
This is an exceptional authentic Indian cookbook for those who are willing to invest the time for the proper outcome and want to expand their repertoire. In addition to the recipes, Camellia Panjabi has done an excellent job explaining the reasons for what and how the ingredients interact and enhance the collage of flavours in the dishes. The illustrations are first-rate. This book is not for those who want to quickly throw something together.
Book Description
Little is known about the print artist Koson, whose career commenced at a time when the Ukiyo-e print tradition was dying out and the shin hanga ('new print') movement had not yet begun. He received little recognition in Japan but many of his prints of birds and flowers, characterised by their peaceful charm, were sold abroad, mainly in the United States and Europe, where things Japanese found an eager market. Japan only recently honoured Koson with an exhibition, organised after the discovery of some valuable material, including many of his original paintings and sketches. This book about Koson is the first Western publication of his oeuvre of prints and paintings, based upon a private Dutch collection. It provides all known information on the artist's life and work, his teachers and publishers, facsimiles of his signatures and seals and illustrations of an estimated ninety percent of his total print output. The definitive reference book for Koson collectors.

Koson, Shoson or Hoson.......2007-01-11
It is not offen, even in the world of Japanese woodblocks that one finds an artist with three different names but here he is. Family name - Ohara. Artist name - well, that depends on who was publishing his prints. He used the name "Koson" (taken from his teacher Suzuki Kason) in the early years when his works were published by Kokkeido and Daikokuya. When he worked with publisher Watanabe, he used "Shoson" and then finally "Hoson" for the prints published by Kawaguchi. This book has a brief but good review of his career. Koson's work is almost entirely focused on the natural world. There are 179 annotated color plates in the main body of the book. These are all from the collection of Jan Perree and while not a complete collection, they are representative. What makes the book a complete catalogue is the checklist section which lists all the known woodblocks with a thumbnail of each, usually in color. The final section on signatures and seals is most helpful.
Love Ohara Koson, but would have liked a better book.......2003-07-15
Instead of trying to include so many smaller photos of the artist's prints, I would have loved to see some larger photos. This is more of a catalog of Ohara Koson's work, instead of a great way to see the work in all it's glory.

Very High Quality Read.......2007-09-07
This is an excellent Manga. Furthermore, I think it has a good chance to appeal to readers who enjoy more western graphic novels but struggle with esoteric themes found in a lot of Manga. There is something very literary about this story that contrasts with much of the other manga Ive been exposed to. File with "Fun House," "American Born Chinese" and other more personal story arcs before lumping it with "Battle Royale" or "Lone Wolf and Cub." Despite this charactization, Apollo's Song is not a biography by any means (Im getting sort of sick of autobiographical comics).
"Apollo" is basically a collection of several smaller stories that fit within a larger framework, and it holds together well both ways. It is a strong title and certainly one of the best comics of 2007 (at least here in the US, where it is finally appearing!). I think readers of mature graphic novels will be quite happy with this lengthy read.
Epic, cosmic; transcendent.......2007-07-16
Osamu Tezuka is called the father of manga and anime, and consequently, nearly all of animation in some form or another.
It's great to see another one of his works make it to American shores, and in such a respectable manner as well. "Apollo's Song" follows Shogo Chikaishi through many eras and time periods, parodying the story of the Greek god Apollo and his love, daughter to the river god, Daphne. It's difficult to give a summary, because -- well, it just shouldn't be done. This is an epic on (nearly) the scale of an ancient Greek history, and is drawn with a distinctive style that has become synonymous with the name Tezuka (or maybe "Astro Boy" to the American fans).
Tezuka seems to enjoy his philosophies, and they are certainly clear on several levels. This is worth noting - that a comic artist is able to create such emotion from such "cartoon" faces. At the same time, however, it also shows some of the past generation's faults; there are numerous occasions where women are treated badly (and this isn't just something experienced with this one publishing of his, trust me) and there is also some near-propaganda with some of the early chapters focusing on Shogo as a Nazi private.
All in all though, this is a fine edition to any comic fan's library, especially those who know the name, or those who wish to know more about Tezuka. He often says more with his pages that hold no text; his drawings have been called mechanical, but I have nothing but the opposite to say - they speak volumes louder than any size font. His characters nearly always have flaws, but I think that's why he's remembered -- for creating a style, as well as wonderful stories like this to envelope inside of it.
Recommended.
WOW another great graphic novel from the Godfather of Japanese Mangas! .......2007-06-26
I loved Apollo's Song! I am a fan of Osamu Tezuka's works. I've read his Buddha & Phoenix series. Apollo's Song is as good as Buddha. A THICK graphic book of over 500 pages long filled with great artwork and story! As not to ruin the story, it moves slowly throughout the whole book all about life and death. It seems that Osamu is fascinated with life and death as it is in most of his books. A great great read!! You won't be disappointed! I'm looking forward to his next one, titled MW out in October of 2007!
Wide Spaces, But Interesting Ideas.......2007-06-23
Various elements and transitions in this story were very overly simplistic. Tezuka's art style, while very captivating and possessing a very unique quality all its own sometimes detracted from key emotional moments. Also, I wonder if it is the quality of the translation that loses a lot of the meaning behind the scenes and actions -- the context.
But, the ideas that he covers -- the philosophical and very mortal issues of love, existence, and death are very poignant. The protagonist Shogo is a very interesting character that both attracts the reader with the struggles of his own trauma, and repulses through some of his actions.
Ultimately, this story, through a succession of different stories within that do not always find the unity or smoothness they seek (though again are very interesting and poignant ideas) deals with the human condition of eros and thanatos -- love and death as the universals of human life and how we find the meaning between them.
It also briefly deals with reincarnation, and makes mention divinity, but the main focus you'll find is on the allegory of Apollo and Daphne as the eternal human experience. But in the end, how you perceive the ending will all depend on your own perspective. For, as Tezuka seems to ask us, are we doomed to repeat our actions, or do we learn from each repetition? You decide, and enjoy.
Book Description
The year is 2030. Advances in robotics and cyberbrain technology have transformed the world into a miraculous place where almost anything is possible — even the melding of humans and machines. In this not-too-distant future, the crimes of flesh and metal are investigated by Section 9, an elite counterterrorist squad headed by Chief Aramaki and his cyborg first-in command, Major Motoko Kusanagi. When dead bodies, drained of blood and with two bite marks on their necks, start turning up on the streets of Tokyo, it isn’t long before the entire city is in a panic. As Major Kusanagi and the other members of Section 9 investigate the killings they begin to wonder — is the killer a real vampire or something much worse? In a dark world of murder, where cyberbrain hacks and treacherous conspiracies reach to the furthest heights of government, Section 9 is all that stands between the people and anarchy.

whats to say.......2007-04-06
if you like the anime you should like this to because it was not a story in the anime series it is it's own story. but i got to warn you it was written by one of the writers of the anime and it reads like it to. you should also read the first two books also.
Good concept, poor execution.......2007-04-02
These novels, based on the films and manga Ghost in the Shell, illustrate how hard it is to translate from Japanese to English. To do so successfully, especially in fiction, the translator must also be a good writer. Unfortunately Camellia Nieh, the translator, is not and the novels come across as what the industry used to call "Juveniles" or books targeted at high school age kids.
The publisher probably has a contract with this translator to do the entire series, I wish they would put them through a rewrite after Camellia finishes with them, it would make these novels much better.
This is a review of the listing, not the book.......2006-12-30
I wish the listings made it clearer which of these are manga and which are novelizations. I enjoy the first, but dislike the latter, and wouldn't have bought this if I'd known it was a novel.
Vampires?.......2006-12-22
White Maze by Junichi Fujisaku is a novel based in the Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex universe. It seems that very important people among the government's elite are being killed. By vampires. Of course nobody within Section 9 believes a word of it. But when they start running into people with fangs and brainwashed minds, they start to wonder what is going on?
Another novel with plots within plots, wheels within wheels, a great book with Motoko, Batou and Togusa. Plus S&M, the wild Tachikomas and lots of combat action.

Great introduction to Indian food.......2007-05-07
I received this book as a gift and at first sight put it alongside the growing pile of "ho hum" cooking books. As a regular visitor to India, I have collected more than my share of cooking books, none of them capture the essence of Indian food as well as this, while keeping it simple. The Introduction explaining the underlying philosophical assumptions behind a menu is interesting and enlightening. Above all the recipes work, which sadly is not often the case.
You'll think twice or thrice before ordering take out; go on make your own Indian feast!
Good Idea, Good Pictures, Bad on cooking steps.......2006-10-13
Having bought this book and making some of the curries. I found that the steps and the ingredients just do not jive at times. She should've spent more time make sure the steps were correct. The curries just didn't taste right.
New edition with corrections please for what could be a great book.......2006-05-01
The book is great for people who are already familiar with Indian cooking. What it does not specify is that Indian spices vary widely in potency and quality.Personally,I have needed to change proportions and cooking timings in every dish. Also far too many typos for an expensive book.
Mainly though, the ingredients are right, the sequencing works and it does enable one to make delicious curries. I do own over a hundred cookbooks including several Madhur Jaffery books and find hers go heavy on the oils and are far too much for the western palate. This book is easily the best of the lot. I wish the author would take the time and effort to do a truly authentic Indian cookbook...she certainly has the resources.
Absolutely beautiful.......2006-02-09
This book is worth buying just to look at! Reading the first 50 or so pages, you are provided with background information on the author's culinary experience, cultural influences, and most of all an in-depth look at the spices involved in cooking all Indian meals. Once one reaches the curry recipe portion of the book, one is treated to full page after full page of gorgeously arranged dishes of what looks to be delicious food. The only dilemma I foresee is having the book close enough to the cooking action - yet not so close as to risk splashing something on the pristine pages.
Easily one of the best..........2005-03-12
I own several Indian cook books (all the usual suspects!) and this is easily the best of the lot. I never knew about the book until I saw it on the shelves of a local book store. I I bought the book after browsing through the book for a few minutes. The main reason: the unbelievably intelligent introduction section that demystifies the main spices and other commonly used ingredients. After I got home, I also found out that this book has recipes of so many delightful curries (I blanche as I use this generic term) that turned out to be so different from each other. The intro chapter has made me enough of an expert to try my own variations. Thank you Panjabi for an excellent book!

A Must Have Book if You Love Camelias.......2007-03-13
This book contains all you want to know about ALL camelias. Contains valuable references to all types available. I have not found any book that is as complete as this one. The photos are very accurate and can be used like a field guide. [...] has the best price on this book so it's a great reference and super value.
Beautiful camelias.......2007-02-21
I bought this book to help identify my camelias. It has helped some, but this book also deals with the newest camelias. All of mine are at least about fifty ro more years old. I do not know if they are nativie to Alabama, but likely they are. It is still a very good book and well written
Beautiful book on Camellias.......2006-11-07
This is a great reference on Camellias. It tells you all about the different types and their bloom times. Best of all, it has tons of pictures - all close up of a bloom so you know exactly what each camellia looks like. An essential resource for anyone wanting to research what camellias to purchase.
Comprehensive.......2005-09-08
It was a huge help in identifying for purchase 50 new plants for our garden. Beautiful pictures and an excellent history included.
If you love camellias ..........2002-05-10
This is clearly a niche book, but it contains a wealth of information about camellias, and pictures of a large number of varieties. I have yet to encounter a better book for a camellia lover.
