Volume 4 of the 3-in-1 Tintin series begins in the middle of an adventure, concluding the story begun in The Secret of the Unicorn. (Keeping all the two-part stories together was not possible in the 3-in-1 format because chronologically, the Unicorn/Rackham and Crystal/Prisoners two-parters are back to back.) Red Rackham's Treasure follows Tintin and friends as they search for the pirate booty procured by Captain Haddock's ancestor, Sir Francis Haddock, in the West Indies. They receive some unexpected help in the form of a hard-of-hearing inventor named Professor Calculus, who would go on to become one of the most endearing characters of the series. (Herge admitted that the character was one "whom I never suspected would take on such importance.") It's a lot of fun, with some submarine and diving adventures, humor from the Thompsons, and an unexpected (but satisfying) ending. The Seven Crystal Balls begins on a light note, as Captain Haddock tries to adjust to his new life as a gentleman following the events of Red Rackham's Treasure. He wears a monocle and frequents the music hall, where in a not-unusual coincidence he and Tintin happen to find General Alcazar (The Broken Ear) and the dreaded diva Bianca Castafiore. However, it's the act of fakir Ragdalam with Madame Yamilah, the amazing clairvoyante, that reveals the central adventure: the scientists excavating the tomb of Racar Capac have incurred the curse of the Inca. Despite the efforts of bungling detectives Thompson ("With a P, as in Philadelphia") and Thomson ("Without a P, as in Venezuela"), the explorers are stricken, and one of Tintin's closest friends disappears mysteriously, leading to a trip to Peru in the second part, Prisoners of the Sun. After The Seven Crystal Balls set the eerie stage, Tintin and his friends continue their adventures in Peru. There Tintin rescues an orange-seller named Zorrino from being bullied, and the young man becomes their guide in their quest to find the Temple of the Sun. But they find more than they bargained for and end up in a hot spot. The perils of this engaging two-part adventure are especially harrowing in their combination of the supernatural and the real, although the resolution is a little too deus ex machina. Calculus and the Thompsons provide their usual comic relief.
The 3-in-1 format provides excellent value, but the small size (about 40% smaller than the single-story paperbacks) makes it harder to enjoy the detail in Herge's layouts. --David Horiuchi

Not Very Good.......2007-01-12
It seems the authors of this book could not make up their minds if they were writing a reference book or a tutorial. This book fails as a tutorial by not spending enough time on basic subjects and is too disorganized to be an effective reference tool. There is a lot of information in there but good luck trying to find out how to do something specific.
Not a reference but a walk though book.......2006-03-23
I didn't find this book useful for finding what I'm looking for fast. Commands and Linux Topics are scattered about the book in different section. The directory and index had little use for finding what I'm looking for, a quick web search turned up faster focused results. This book touches the surface in order to get a novice going but thats about it.
linux informative.......2006-03-21
This is a good book for the linux "newbie" or someone who is famaliar with other flavors of linux and want to brush up on this new version of Fedora. The book gets really in depth but I realized that everything I was looking for was already self explanatory on the desktop. The core linux command line stuff isn't there but you should buy a book that contains that information before tackling a server build first anyway.
Final point: If looking for basic linux command line information, buy a linux command line book.
If looking to learn the new points of Fedora Core 4 buy this book but play with the "GUI" and you'll figure it out in 10 minutes.
Unleashed books still the best!.......2005-12-13
just wanted to say how impressed I have been with the Unleashed series of books, I worked on an old Linux unleashed book years ago and lately I have been training SuSE and RedHat courses for a Novell platinum partner training company in South Africa, I have tried other books like the SuSE bible and have not been very satisfied since they are not comprehensive enough. I bought your book on Fedora 4 unleashed the other day and am pleased to say that it is still the same quality, easy to read and very comprehensive, that is why I recommend the unleashed series of books as the first choice to all my students. When you are in a training environment and you sometimes have very little time to prep a new course, having a book like this take a lot of pressure off you.
All things Linux in a single (albeit large) volume..........2005-08-15
Looking for a single volume that touches on just about everything related to Red Hat Fedora? Here you go... Red Hat Fedora 4 Unleashed by Paul Hudson, Andrew Hudson, Bill Ball, and Hoyt Duff.

Part 2 - Fedora Desktop: The X Window System; Managing Software and System Resources; On the Internet - Surfing the Web, Writing Email, and Reading the News; Productivity Applications; Multimedia Applications; Printing with Fedora; Games
Part 3 - System Administration: Managing Users; Automating Tasks; System Resources; Backing Up, Restoring, and Recovery; Network Connectivity; Internet Connectivity
Part 4 - Fedora As a Server: Apache Web Server Management; Administering Database Services; File and Print; Remote File Serving with FTP; Handling Electronic Mail; Setting Up a Proxy Server; Remote System Access with SSH and Telnet; Managing DNS; LDAP; News Servers and Mailing Lists

Part 6 - Fedora Housekeeping: Securing Your Machines; Performance Tuning; Command-line Masterclass; Advanced Yum; Managing the File System; Kernel and Module Management
Part 7 - Appendix: Fedora and Linux Internet Resources; Index
At over 1100 pages, this isn't the book you'd give to a typical Windows user to make the switch over to Linux... :-)
As you can see from the contents, Fedora Unleashed touches on nearly every area of Linux at some level. Using this book alone, you could easily get a Linux server and/or a Linux desktop environment up and running on your computer. Depending on your particular needs, you could then dive into server related topics like file sharing, LDAP, or running a web server. If you're just wanting to break out of the Windows monopoly and run a desktop OS not controlled by Microsoft, you would spend more time in Part 2 where the desktop Linux environment is covered. While you could definitely find more detailed books on specific areas of Linux, Unleashed allows you to get a working knowledge of a broad swath of the subject.
The book also comes with a DVD containing the Fedora 4 distribution so you can easily start to dive right into your own Linux build. This definitely beats having to find, download, and burn a number of CD .iso files before you can get started. While the downloads are free, having all the media ready to use adds to the value of the book...
Since I haven't yet upgraded to Red Hat Fedora 4, having this book around will put that task higher on my priority list... Good volume for anyone wanting to learn and understand Linux...
Book Description
This professional horticulture reference, which has been in print continuously for 70 years, is fully revised and updated in this new edition. Based on real-life experiences from industry professionals including growers and equipment and greenhouse manufacturers, the presented information covers all aspects of greenhouse equipment—the structures themselves, benches, irrigation, curtains, environmental controls, machination, and the greenhouse as a retail facility. Discussed are the most recent developments in greenhouse evolution and the varieties of greenhouse structures available, from freestanding and gutter-connected to shade houses and open-roof greenhouses. There are many types of glazing available for each greenhouse, and the differences between glass, polyethylene film, and rigid plastic are explored. Also included is information on managing the greenhouse, marketing products, and operating a retail store from a greenhouse. This replaces 1883052157.
Book Description
Offering detailed information on the production of 162 flower, herb, and vegetable crops, this essential resource for growers includes techniques and advice that work in real-life production, not just in the lab or trial greenhouse. Offered is information on how to decide what to grow, as well as tips about temperature, media, plant nutrition, irrigation, water quality, light, crop scheduling, and growth regulators. Details about propagation, growing, pest and disease control, troubleshooting, and post-harvest care are presented and arranged by genus name. Plants represented include annuals, perennials, pot foliage plants, flowering potted plants, herbs, and some vegetable bedding plants.
Customer Reviews:
Great class room text.......2006-03-15
Great book for classes on Greenhouse Production. Debbie Hamrick has written a great book that is a part of my horticulture class's Greenhouse Production curriculum. The book is presented and arranged by genus name, which is very helpful to a budding horticulturist. It offers detailed information on the production annuals, perennials, pot foliage plants, flowering potted plants, herbs, and vegetable bedding plants that are grown most in greenhouse production. Ms. Hamrick has presented great resources in this book to help growers decide on what to grow, tips about temperature, media, plant nutrition, irrigation, water quality, light, crop scheduling, and growth regulators. The details on propagation, growing, pest and disease control, troubleshooting, and post-harvest care have been very helpful since my class has grown Easter Lilies and Chrysanthemums.

Better for Linux workstations than servers.......2006-06-23
Red Hat Linux can be something of a mystery when first starting out, and I found this book in my predecessor's office when I took the plunge. There are some computer books out there that really nail a topic and make all other books superfluous in the process. This is not such a book, but Red Hat Linux 9 Unleashed does provide helpful knowledge when using the distribution. I would first read the official documentation and the man pages before considering purchase. Some of the content is a verbatim copy of the official Red Hat documentation.
The layout and design of the book is very clean and easy on the eyes. I read this book when I didn't know much of anything about Linux, and the installation walkthrough was very helpful. The explanation of user accounts, permissions, and groups was also well done. I occasionally reference this book when I have a question about shell scripting, the file structure, or the general workings of Linux. This book is very broad and generalized, which is good enough to partially answer any question.
The only real criticism I have for Red Hat Linux 9 Unleashed stems from that generality. There are some Linux topics that deserve and require a really thorough study - like the IP Tables firewall. Several hundred pages have been dedicated to that service, so if security is a factor for your Linux machine, expect to look for other resources. Perhaps sensing the need for this sort of thing, the text lists some helpful links at the end of each section. Services like Apache and Samba are highlighted here, but I would choose a book dedicated soley to the service in question over a jack of all trades text.
Pretty Good..........2005-03-31
When I had purchased Red Hat Linux 9 Unleashed I had already dived head first into Linux, so I knew some things about the subject. This book is still really good reference when I get stuck trying to do something Red Hat, the sections on the kernel is very well written, but this book isn't a good tutorial on Linux in general. A book I would recommed to the novice and also the power user is "Linux: Rute User's Tutorial and Exposition -- by Paul Sheer" its old, but its a classic.
Book fine, CDs unusable.......2004-11-07
Book seems to be a usable introduction to Linux, but don't buy it to get the software. The second CD seems to have a production problem. Both the original and the replacement sent to me hang up the install process and result in an unbootable PC.
Red Hat Linux 9 Unleashed.......2004-02-20
I have been using Linux for over 3 years, so I cannot honestly review Red Hat 9 Linux Unleashed from the standpoint of a complete beginner.
However, this book is the first reference I consult when I have a question. There is so much software available for Linux that no book can cover every topic in depth.
On the other hand, Red Hat Linux 9 Unleashed seems to explain more material than the other "thick" Linux books in the same class. There's a good list of references, in the form of web addresses, at the end of each chapter so you can research topics in even greater detail.
I used Ball & Duff's earlier book, Red Hat Linux 8 Unleashed when I ran Red Hat Linux 8 and thought highly of it. Their later RH9 book is even better.
Regarding one reviewer's complaint about the book failing to tell how to configure the almost impenetrable sendmail command, I followed Ball & Duff's advice (pg. 634) to use Donncha O Caoimh's free install-sendmail script, which worked great.
Good overall presentation.......2003-11-12
Alright, this book has some strong points and some weak points. The weak points are: There are only general guidlines to troubleshooting but nothing else. The reference links work, but some are expired. The coverage is "hasty" and kind of sloppy, but in a book like this that is to be expected.
The strong points are: It virtually covers all the areas. It gives you a solid idea on how Linux works and lets you take it from there. It offers enough support to specialized issues such as networking, scripting, and kernel managing. (Again don't expect any in depth troubleshooting, if any at all).
The message is clear: If you want a most general introduction to ALL areas of Linux, buy this book.
If you want the newbie's guide to Linux, this is not it! Chances are that you'll get stuck booting for the first time with weird messages appearing on your screen and this book will not care less! Stay clear in that case and buy someting more limited to its scope but more embracing to troubleshooting.
On the other hand if you are not experienced yet and you want a thick book on your shelf as a guick reference to kernel compilation let's say, then buy this book. As your experience grows your references to this book will diminish.

Customer Reviews:
Great book! for starting fires with..........2005-07-21
I'll start by saying I'm not a linux guru by any means. I've played around with Red Hat, starting with 7, then 9, and now FC3. I also have used Debian a bit. Further, a long time ago in a city far, far away, I used Solaris exclusively when I was in college.
That being said, this book reads like VCR instructions. In olde english. Upside down.
I installed Fedora BEFORE I bought the book, and had an OK-running system. I got the book to start doing more with it -- set up Samba, Sendmail, DNS, etc. I would have been better just reading the FAQ's online. This book has no flow, no good examples, and makes even the easiest tasks difficult (at best) or just plain rediculous (at worst). Get a different book.
If my review hasn't dissuaded you, then I'll give you my copy. Anything to get this thing off my shelf.
Great Book, not a great distro.......2005-04-02
I've been running Linux for a couple of years now, but my background is pretty spotty, because I've never taken the time to read through a book on Linux. I needed something general but aimed toward intermediate to advanced users. I also wanted something up-to-date. I'm finding that Fedora 3 Unleashed is pretty close to perfect for my purposes.
But there is a fly in the ointment-- which is that, in my opinion, Fedora Core 3 is something of a dog-- and I'm not the only one who thinks so. On my system, it runs slow and crashes so often you'd think it was Windows, and there are some inconvenient problems with permissions. For me and many users, you have to edit some file in order to eject CDs from a normal user account.
I ran FC 1 and 2 and they were both pretty good-- so I'm hopeful that the bugs will be ironed out for the next FC release. In the meantime, I've gone back to Debian Sarge, which runs like a dream, even though there isn't currently anything like an up-to-date published Debian manual available. Nevertheless, I'm finding "Fedora 3 Unleashed" to be be well worth my time, even if Fedora 3 itself is not.
Really POOR for new users!!!.......2005-02-07
I tend to be extra generous in comments about computer books, but not today. If I can figure the example out for myself with enough guidance from the text I'm relatively happy. As a new Linux user this book is really bad. I wish I had of bought the Fedora 3 Bible, or absolutely anything else instead. It's easy to misunderstand or read over the product description 'Incorporating an advanced approach...'. Is this some sort of code for 'This book is for advanced users only', but without hurting sales to newbies? Clear as dum.
A Little Dissapointed........2005-01-15
I have just recently switched to using Fedora Core 3 full-time (from SuSE Linux) and have enjoyed the experience. However, there are many things in this distro that I have questions about. I was hoping this book would address many of them. I have found that this book covers Fedora Core in a general sense rather than specifically with version 3. I feel that a lot of changes have been made between versions 2 and 3. For example, this book does not mention anything about formatting in Virtual Volumes, as what takes place during "Automatic partition" during Disk Setup. This book further does not discuss SELinux, which has a significant presence in version 3. On the matter of other subjects, the book does not discuss options with VNC, the new Gnome 2.8 Environment, (nor the new KDE for that matter), or interaction with other new OS technologies such as Mac OS X. And this may be a minor complaint, but an overwhelming majority of the screenshots in this book are from Fedora Core version 2 or before.
Book Description
One little, red rubber ball sits all alone while the rest of the world seems to go on about its business. Bees buzz, birds fly, squirrels hoard, but no one pays the little toy any lasting attention. At least, not at first.
Lee Bennett Hopkins Award winner Constance Levy has created subtle, infectious verse that tells the story of a small thing that makes a big difference. Hiroe Nakata paints a bustling world where animals play, the sun rises and sets, and children make friends. Rich with colorful characters and detail, The Story of Red Rubber Ball is a surprising--and charming--backyard adventure.
Customer Reviews:
An instant favorite.......2007-04-04
I recently signed out three children's books from my local library, and my
nearly-three-year-old daughter requested that I read this particular book to her over and over again. Since I returned it to the library, she has asked for it. Therefore I am now purchasing this book. Why this book? I think the story of the ball being apparently abandoned but then taken in by a dog in the end "to keep" is very comforting. Everything that happens in between is simple and sweet, my daughter has memorized much of the story. I haven't become sick of reading it to her either!
A Little Gem.......2004-05-21
This charming little story engages young minds with a fervor reminiscent of my own recollections of "Where the Wild Things Are" and "The Little Brute Family." A brief, compact little masterpiece, "The Story of Red Rubber Ball" should thrust Ms. Levy into a class of children's authors alongside Maurice Sendak, Lillian Moore, Russell Hoban and Shel Silverstein. The writing is crisp, with no wasted words, and is infused with Ms. Levy's trademark use of alliteration and clever rhyme (never forced). My 3-year old daughter adores this book, and so will any other child lucky enough to have it.

Book Description
Introducing preschoolers to opposites and colors has never been more hands-on fun. This surprise-packed book feature acetate pictures that change at the pull of a tab. In Big, Small, Little Red Ball, three animal friends follow a trail of opposites as they search for a favorite toy. (Bunny is sparkling clean, but pull the tab and he is definitely dirty.)
With spry illustrations by a talented newcomer and humor that is just right for the preschool market, this interactive book is irresistible.
Customer Reviews:
a fantastic pull-tab book.......2002-04-30
A well-done book of opposites for a little one to read or play with. The art is fun, the storyline quick but engaging (Woof wants to find his little red ball and everyone helps), and the pull-tabs add a delightful element of cleverness (they create the "opposites"). The pull-tabs are sturdy, although I would probably wait until your child can handle a pull-tab without too much destruction--the tabs pull down/out a good bit and could easily bend under a child's enthusiasm. But don't let that hinder you from picking up this fun book. The design is well thought out and the "opposites" play well within the story. I highly recommend this title.
