Mistress Mary is quite contrary until she helps her garden grow. Along the way, she manages to cure her sickly cousin Colin, who is every bit as imperious as she. These two are sullen little peas in a pod, closed up in a gloomy old manor on the Yorkshire moors of England, until a locked-up garden captures their imaginations and puts the blush of a wild rose in their cheeks; "It was the sweetest, most mysterious-looking place any one could imagine. The high walls which shut it in were covered with the leafless stems of roses which were so thick, that they matted together.... 'No wonder it is still,' Mary whispered. 'I am the first person who has spoken here for ten years.'" As new life sprouts from the earth, Mary and Colin's sour natures begin to sweeten. For anyone who has ever felt afraid to live and love, The Secret Garden's portrayal of reawakening spirits will thrill and rejuvenate. Frances Hodgson Burnett creates characters so strong and distinct, young readers continue to identify with them even 85 years after they were conceived. (Ages 9 to 12)
Book Description
When orphaned Mary Lennox, lonely and sad, comes to live at her uncle's great house on the Yorkshire moors, she finds it full of secrets. At night, she hears the sound of crying down one of the long corridors. Outside, she meets Dickon, a magical boy who can charm and talk to animals. Then, one day, with the help of a friendly robin, Mary discovers the most mysterious wonder of all--a secret garden, walled and locked, which has been completely forgotten for years and years. Is everything in the graden dead, or can Mary bring it back to life?

A classic for girls.......2007-09-22
The Secret Garden is a book about a spoiled girl who uncovers the mysteries of the house around her which include, but are not limited too, what is behind the wall, and why is it kept secret. It is a good classic, but girls will enjoy it much more than boys do.
Classic.......2007-08-06
Even if you are an adult you should reread this book. Helps you to see how fun it was to be a kid.
Seeds the child's imagination..........2007-07-29
This has always been one of my favorite books since childhood. When I read my first story in this book it gave me so much inspiration to use my imagination as a child should. A child's imagination is so real! This reality soon takes the form of abstract, which paves the road to anywhere he wants it to go - or not...
The Secret Garden.......2007-07-05
This edition is printed on really cheap, unappealing paper. I can't imagine anyone wanting to give this version of a children's classic as a gift, or even to read from it to a child yourself.
Spellbinding Book.......2007-07-03
This book is the best book I have ever read. It's a light, happy book that I will treasure for the rest of my life. Ilove the theme of hope in the book, that will convince readers about the Magic inside themselves...if they hope. If they believe something will happen, it will. That theme is so beautifully conveyed. I couldn't put it down, and it is most definitely my new favorite book. A MUST READ!!!!!!!!
I ALSO RECCOMEND THE FOLLOWING:
Arthur and the Invisibles, Artemis Fowl Series, The Book Without Words, The Kingdom Keepers, the Prophecy of the Stones, The Game of Sunken PLaces, Midnight Blue

Jerry BAker's books are great.......2007-06-27
I liked it a lot. Lots of good, down to earth information and easy to find solutions.
Great book for gardeners!.......2006-11-07
This answers everything from selecting a plant to pests and problems.
Buy only a used book.......2005-11-05
I bought this book through the mail and I wont tell you how much I spent on it. It really does have some interesting facts. A lot of repetitive ideas that can be confusing some times. Some of the tonics and things that I tried made my garden worse. In fact, it burnt some of my plants to the ground! Some of his recipes are confusing. Such as: he recommeds everything in this 20 gallon hose end sprayer. I went to many garden centers and everyone laughed at me. Nobody carries anything that large. that is for a garden the size of Texas! Who are these people that the tonics worked for? Come to my house and help me, then.
Great Green book of Garden Secrets.......2005-09-26
This is a wonderful and practical book. I tried two of the receipes in the book and had instant improvement in the appearance of my indoor and outdoor plants. I will be getting several copies for my gardening friends and family.
Grow your own.......2004-01-16
If you want to have the best "buds" on the block , I "highly" recommend this gem of a book.
Jerry baker is a master of garden secrets. And these are secrets that you will not find anywhere else.
5 stars.

A very fine book to read.......2007-02-08
For anyone who is teaching their 8 or 9 year old how to write this is one fine book to read because it is so well written. I am a homeschooler who is using IEW to teach my children to write and this book is loaded with "dress-ups". All that aside, the story line is captivating, the characters are memorable, and there are lessons to be learned here that will last a lifetime.
One of the best books ever written.......2005-10-02
THIS REVIEW IS ONLY ABOUT THE ORIGINAL VERSION, NOT THE MODERN REWRITE!!!
When I first read this book (at around 9), I loved it because of the main character, Mary. She was described as "disagreeable," but I liked her -- and I was disappointed when she changed from her "contrary" self into a nice little girl. I also loved the other characters (especially Martha, the "sturdy" housemaid and the "robin who showed the way" and Ben Weatherstaff), and the descriptions.
For example, Mary explores Miselthwaite Manor on a rainy day; she's heard that the house has over a hundred rooms-- and the book is so vividly written that all these years later, I can still remember her playing with a set of ivory elephants, finding a mouse and her young family in a sofa....Other vivid small moments are the maid talking about the moors and opening the windows which made me long to go to Yorkshire and breathe in the moor air. THe story itself is quite suspenseful and I loved that, too.
Now that I'm grown up, I still love all those things, but I understand why Mary had to change (though I still wish she hadn't!). Now, parts of the book (like her reaction to the flowers starting to grow in the garden) make me cry -- they're touching and Mary is too. I appreciate the descriptions and characters and plotting even more than I did as a child and agree that this is probably the best children's book ever written -- and one of the best books ever written, too.
It inspired me as a writer. I am the author of BLOW OUT THE MOON, which is also about a contrary child (but an American) who transforms herself as a result of kind-hearted English people in the English countryside. I didn't copy THE SECRET GARDEN, but the English boarding school I went to as a child (which is the subject of Blow Out the Moon) did remind me of that book!
Secret Garden.......2004-12-01
This is a classic book about a girl, Mary, who is forced to go to her uncle's mysterious mansion to live. But when a boy is discovered in a secret passage, Mary gets suspicious, and a little scared.
All that suspicion is gone when the mean gardener tells her the story of a secret garden. Of course, her curiosity gets the better of her and she goes to find it, that is, with the help of her new birdie friend. The two of them embark on a journey that will change their lives.
Every night when I read this book, I could not put it down because it was so good! When you think the problems are over, another one joins in. I enjoyed reading this book, and I hope you do too!

Mistress Mary, quite contrary..........2003-11-02
The Secret Garden - my mum gave me this book when I was about eight and in the front it says: "for Kate, who will stay up reading until the wee hours of the morning." and it is true. I've read this book many times since then and I discover something new each time.
The characters are wonderful, especially Mary, Colin, Ben Weatherstaff and the "Yorkshire angel" Dickon. The changes that happen to both Mary and Colin throughout the book are a delight to observe.
I feel protected and happy once I've finished this book, things turn out happily, for the best and the image I have in my head of the Secret Garden surpasses anything I have ever seen in real life - and that is fine, for this is literature.
Read it.

A classic children's novel gets a Broadway treatment.......2007-08-13
"The Secret Garden", the bestselling children's novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, came to Broadway as a musical in 1991 and ran until 1993. Along the way, the musical won three Tony Awards, including Best Book of a Musical, written by Marsha Norman.
If you loved the novel as a kid, you might consider this book of the Tony-winning musical!
The Secret Garden had a slow start,.......2005-05-17
The Secret Garden had a slow start and gave too much detail, but
it got better when Mary starts to be nicer to everyone. Then it got slow again. I would not recomend this book because it is too long, gives too much detail, and the author uses too many unfamiliar words for younger readers. This is why I gave this book 2 stars out of five.
In Short --You Must Read.......2005-01-25
I bought the script and the vocals after listening to the wonderful C.D. This is great for any young struggling actor or actress or anyone who has an interest in the theater.
I only wish that Broadway produced more touching musicals like this.
The script is heartfelt and touching it shows trimuph over loss and the importance of family no wonder it won a Tony for best book!
The script is easy to read for youngsters and the music is perfect for auditions (although you have to buy the sheet music seperately). Little actresses will love reading Mary at auditions. I love this script and find myself reading it and re-reading especially the parts with Lily and Mary.
If you loved the musical or the C.D. than you must buy the script and this is a must for any young actress!
A Magnificent Book.......2004-01-30
The book the Secret Garden is one of the very few books that I have read that actually got me interested in wanting me to finish it. It was a great page turning historical fiction book that could relate to reality in some ways of which were very interesting to learn about. Mary Lennox at first played a very keep to yourself type person, in the end she learned to loosen up and respect those around her like Dickon for example or Ben Weatherstaff. So if your looking for a FANTASTIC historical fiction book read the secret garden.
A Great Musical.......2000-03-20
This is a GREAT musical with excellent music. It tells the story of Mary Lennox, who is sent to live with her uncle, Archibald Craven, after the deaths of her parents. The book and lyrics are by Marsha Norman, based on the book by Frances Hodgson Burnett. An wonderful broadway musical to definitely take a look at!

Book Description
The illustrations for this series were created by Scott McKowen, who, with his wife Christina Poddubiuk, operates Punch & Judy Inc., a company specializing in design and illustration for theater and performing arts. Their projects often involve research into the visual aspects of historical settings and characters. Christina is a theater set and costume designer and contributed advice on the period clothing for the illustrations.
Scott created these drawings in scratchboard an engraving medium which evokes the look of popular art from the period of these stories. Scratchboard is an illustration board with a specifically prepared surface of hard white chalk. A thin layer of black ink is rolled over the surface, and lines are drawn by hand with a sharp knife by scraping through the ink layer to expose the white surface underneath. The finished drawings are then scanned and the color is added digitally.
Born in India, the unattractive and willful Mary Lennox has remained in the care of servants for as long as she can remember. But the girl’s life changes when her mother and father die and she travels to Yorkshire to live with her uncle. Dark, dreary Misselthwaite Manor seems full of mysteries, including a very special garden, locked tight for 10 years. With the help of Dickon, a local boy, Mary intends to uncover its secrets.

Read and re-read.......2006-04-22
Five generations of my family have adored The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, albeit in different editions. It was first published over 100 years ago, but when I read it as a child I was transported to that place and time and I was Mary Lennox. My great grandmother, grandmother, mother and daughter all had the same experience when they each discovered this book around 6-10 years old.
It is about a little girl orphaned in India and sent to live with an uncle/guardian in a big house in England. I don't want to spoil the story for you, but it is a book about discovery, growth and so much more.
Discoveries include a cousin, a young gardener, the glories and coming to life of a secret garden and relationships.
A book is the best way to experience "The Secret Garden" because the pictures you paint in your mind are much stronger than those on the screen, however there was also a brilliant BBC series. If you can get this on DVD, maybe from Amazon in the UK or ebay, do get it.
Buy and read the book first, it is something you will treasure for life. I still love reading "The Secret Garden" every few years.
