Mistress Mary is quite contrary until she helps her garden grow. Along the way, she manages to cure her sickly cousin Colin, who is every bit as imperious as she. These two are sullen little peas in a pod, closed up in a gloomy old manor on the Yorkshire moors of England, until a locked-up garden captures their imaginations and puts the blush of a wild rose in their cheeks; "It was the sweetest, most mysterious-looking place any one could imagine. The high walls which shut it in were covered with the leafless stems of roses which were so thick, that they matted together.... 'No wonder it is still,' Mary whispered. 'I am the first person who has spoken here for ten years.'" As new life sprouts from the earth, Mary and Colin's sour natures begin to sweeten. For anyone who has ever felt afraid to live and love, The Secret Garden's portrayal of reawakening spirits will thrill and rejuvenate. Frances Hodgson Burnett creates characters so strong and distinct, young readers continue to identify with them even 85 years after they were conceived. (Ages 9 to 12)
Book Description
When orphaned Mary Lennox, lonely and sad, comes to live at her uncle's great house on the Yorkshire moors, she finds it full of secrets. At night, she hears the sound of crying down one of the long corridors. Outside, she meets Dickon, a magical boy who can charm and talk to animals. Then, one day, with the help of a friendly robin, Mary discovers the most mysterious wonder of all--a secret garden, walled and locked, which has been completely forgotten for years and years. Is everything in the graden dead, or can Mary bring it back to life?

A classic for girls.......2007-09-22
The Secret Garden is a book about a spoiled girl who uncovers the mysteries of the house around her which include, but are not limited too, what is behind the wall, and why is it kept secret. It is a good classic, but girls will enjoy it much more than boys do.
Classic.......2007-08-06
Even if you are an adult you should reread this book. Helps you to see how fun it was to be a kid.
Seeds the child's imagination..........2007-07-29
This has always been one of my favorite books since childhood. When I read my first story in this book it gave me so much inspiration to use my imagination as a child should. A child's imagination is so real! This reality soon takes the form of abstract, which paves the road to anywhere he wants it to go - or not...
The Secret Garden.......2007-07-05
This edition is printed on really cheap, unappealing paper. I can't imagine anyone wanting to give this version of a children's classic as a gift, or even to read from it to a child yourself.
Spellbinding Book.......2007-07-03
This book is the best book I have ever read. It's a light, happy book that I will treasure for the rest of my life. Ilove the theme of hope in the book, that will convince readers about the Magic inside themselves...if they hope. If they believe something will happen, it will. That theme is so beautifully conveyed. I couldn't put it down, and it is most definitely my new favorite book. A MUST READ!!!!!!!!
I ALSO RECCOMEND THE FOLLOWING:
Arthur and the Invisibles, Artemis Fowl Series, The Book Without Words, The Kingdom Keepers, the Prophecy of the Stones, The Game of Sunken PLaces, Midnight Blue

Then she discovers the arched doorway into an overgrown garden, shut up since the death of her aunt ten years earlier. Mary soon begins transforming it into a thing of beauty--unaware that she is changing too.
But Missalthwaite hides another secret, as Mary discovers one night. High in a dark room, away from the rest of the house, lies her young cousin Colin, who believes he is an incurable invalid, destined to die young. His tantrums are so frightful, no one can reason with him. If only, Mary hopes, she can get Colin to love the secret garden as much as she does, its magic wil work wonders on him.

Must have book when renovating.......2006-07-02
This is a wonderful book, the author assists you with questions to ask yourself, and gives you many options. A book you will use again and again when considering window treatments. I bought another book, 1001 and one ideas for windows, and it didn't compare at all to this book.
The world's leading window decorating authority.......2006-03-22
An inspiring guide to window coverings featuring more than 600 photographs, Dream Windows, Historical Perspectives, Classic Designs, Contemporary Creations by Kathleen Stoehr is both unique and complete in its scope of window decorating ideas. Covering chapters such as shutters, curtains & draperies, combination treatments, shades and more, Stoehr shows the latest styles and colors for every room in the house. But that's not all: each chapter also touches on historical perspectives, facts about the products (such as advantages and disadvantages) cost, lifespan, care and cleaning, and most appropriate locations in the home.
"Good to Know" sidebars cover the intricacies of each products--such as a short discussion of wood versus faux wood products, types of fabrics, the differences between top treatments and more. A "Question Yourself" chapter will help you evaluate various aspects of window treatments (among them, qualities needed, time frame, design style) in order to make a thoughtful decision for your home.
The topic of motorization, as well as hiring an interior designer is addressed and a thorough glossary will help you with potentially unfamiliar terminology. But best of all is the glorious photography, provided from top interior designers and window treatment companies throughout the United States and abroad. Whether looking for designer window treatments or something out of the ordinary, you will find it in this complete guide to soft and hard window treatments.

Book Description
Here is a delightful look at childhood, written by master poet and storyteller Robert Louis Stevenson. In this collection of sixty-six poems, Stevenson recalls the joys of his childhood, from sailing boats down a river, to waiting for the lamplighter, to sailing off to foreign lands in his imagination. Tasha Tudor's watercolor paintings evoke a simpler time in the past, and celebrate two of the things she loves most -- children and nature. Her talents are the perfect match for these inspiring poems, making this a handsome gift edition that will be cherished by families for generations.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Book.......2007-03-24
I love this poetry book, A Child's Garden of Verses. I use it as part of the daily curriculum in my daycare. The children and I love the beautiful illustrations and the wonderfully written poems.
Poems authored in 1883 offer both classical and out-dated ideas.......2007-03-12
This book contains 64 poems whose subjects range from nature adventures (The "Dumb Soldier" explores the idea of a toy soldier who has been buried by a little boy but cannot report what goes on underground, due to his sealed mouth) to family relationships to far-away lands.
Many of the poems contain four stanzas or more, and for that reason, would probably be appropriate for children who are at least 5 years old.
Parents who live in our generation may be offended by some of the antiquated racial terms used to describe people of African descent. The "Travel" poem, for example, contains lines that reveal the old un-informed view of Africa from early Americans who did not have the benefit of travel to the beautiful African continent:
-Full of apes and cocoa-nuts
-And the negro hunters' huts
I'm not sure I want my five year old using the word "negro" at all outside of the context of a discussion of old racial terms which are no longer (or never were) appropriate, so I skipped sharing this poem with him all together. Indian (NOT Native-American) and Chinese families may find similar intrusions on their dignity in some of these poems.
The strength of this collection of poetry is its usability as a means to expose American children to old English speaking patterns for the first time. Consider these lines from "Winter-Time":
-Late lies the wintry sun a-bed,
-A frosty, fiery sleepy-head;
-Blinks but an hour or two; and then,
-A blood-red orange sets again.
When is the last time your kindergartner or first grader heard speech like that? :)
"A Child's Garden of Verses" is a staple of the Catholic homeschool curriculum entitled "Mother of Divine Grace." Accordingly, a few of the poems address the topic of prayer (at bedtime and mealtime) in a respectful and childlike way.
Enjoy this historical book, but use caution when you choose which pieces to share with your child.
A Gift for a Life-time of Pleasure.......2007-01-16
I ordered Robert Louis Stevenson's "A Child's Garden of Verses" for 3 of our grandchildren, ages 2 - 5, remembering my pleasure reading it as a beginning reader some seven decades ago. Now their parents are sharing those joys with Matt,Julie and Abby - new memories in the making. The book came through in perfect condition and in a very timely manner. Thank you for a service that we expect to use again soon!
Love the old world poetry.......2006-11-10
This book takes you and your children to a time almost forgotten. It should be a part of every home, especially a homeschool library.
A Child's Garden of Verses.......2006-10-27
I was looking for the book Now We Are Six by A.A. Milne and ran across this one. It surprised me as I often mention it and think about reading it when I was a young girl in the 1950's. I still have my original copy given to me when I was six at Christmas by my parents.
I loved it then and will read it to my grandchildren now. Great book! I am so glad it is still available for today's children (and their parents and grandparents) to enjoy.

Morgantina Studies
ASIN: 0691040168 |
Book Description
Excavations on the slopes of the Cittadella settlement at Morgantina in eastern Sicily have revealed nearly seventy tombs dating from the late eighth to the mid-fifth century B.C. In this volume, Claire Lyons presents a full publication of these Archaic cemeteries, examining the structure of the tombs, their rich range of grave furnishings, and the evidence for funerary ritual that they preserve. Often reused for multiple inhumation and cremation burials, these tombs provide significant documentation of the critical period when immigrant Greeks interacted with the substantial indigenous community, introducing foreign objects and practices that modified the local Iron Age funerary rite.
Detailed reconstructions of all of the burial contexts are presented in an illustrated catalog of the more than 1,350 artifacts found in the tombs. The author's close typological analysis of these grave goods--Attic, Corinthian, Lakonian, East Greek, colonial, and local pottery, as well as terracottas, jewelry, and metal objects--brings new evidence to bear on questions of chronology, production, trade, and function. A particularly intriguing chapter focuses on the meaning of the objects deposited with the dead in Archaic Morgantina, extracting from them information on class, social identity, gender, age, and ethnicity, as well as evidence for the process of transculturation that gradually transformed both the native and the colonial populations. The volume also contains an appendix on the human skeletal material, prepared by Marshall J. Becker.

Best CookBook ever printed.......2007-05-07
I got married in 1956 and this cookbook was a wedding gift. I still have the original, but I bought the new reprint not only for myself but for others. I learned to make bread with this cookbook and the pie crust recipe is as near fool proof as you can get. I still use this cookbook after all these years. It is my favorite.
Blast from the past.......2007-03-08
I bought this book for my mother as a replacement for her well-worn copy and she absolutely loved it!! It is exactly the same as the copy she received in her high school home-ec class except that the pages are not falling out and/or torn. This has been the default cookbook in my mother's kitchen for many years. The recipies are clear and concise with easy to follow directions. The pictures and pages are aged for that nostalgic effect but that doesn't diminish the quality of the contents.
Broken.......2007-01-25
I gave this cookbook 2 stars because although it was exactly what I was looking for, it came in an unacceptable condition. My mother had the original book for as long as I can remember and it had become well worn. Pages were falling out of it. This book was for all intesive purposes the same. When I gave it to my mom for Christmas she was so excited. Unfortunately, the three ring binder on it was broken. This is very bad considering that you need them to turn the pages. I would say that considering it was brand new, this was unacceptable
This was a hit as a gift!.......2007-01-11
I have a friend who's very much into the retro look in everkything, and she was thrilled with this book. All the old-timey pictures and recipes have kept her smiling for some time now. She keeps the cookbook open on her kitchen counter, and changes it to a different picture regularly. There is something very comforting about seeing something like this that reminds us of our mothers.
Thanks Mom!.......2006-03-21
This is a wonderful recipe book. It's so authentic I feel like a kid again with my Mom in the kitchen. She always used this book for different recipes to try as well as good old traditional bisquits and cookies. Thanks for keeping it going!

Tasha Tudor--illustrator of more than 70 books for children--is known for her charming drawings of children and animals; delicate, flower-filled borders; and delightful settings from days gone by. In this edition of Robert Louis Stevenson's venerated volume of children's poems, Tudor's old-fashioned illustrations perfectly complement the poetry that has survived a century in print. Here is a comfortable world of sunny gardens and storybooks, where children play with toy soldiers and imaginary friends. You may remember some of these poems from your own childhood, such as "My Shadow," "The Swing," and "The Land of Counterpane." If time is any judge, this garden of delights will stay a perennial favorite. (Ages 4 to adult)

Here is a classic, illustrated edition of one of the best loved poetry collections in the world. Lavishly illustrated with more than 100 pictures by the most distinguished children's book artists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, this edition of A Child's Garden of Verses contains all the poems that appeared in the original book, published over 100 years ago.
This is a volume to be cherished for a lifetime: by parents and by grandparents who grew up with the poems and, most of all, by children who are being introduced to this extraordinary collection for the first time.

Who says you can't go back...........2006-03-08
Just love the works of Robert Louis Stevenson. Loved them
as a child and still do. And the illustrations are
wonderful - reminds me of when I was a little girl, and
we sometimes need that.
Beautiful edition of a classic.......2006-02-17
A Child's Garden of Verses has always been one of my favorite books, and over the years I've given dozens of copies of it as First Birthday presents to the new children in my life. This is the most beautiful edition I have ever seen of these beloved poems. The illustrations are wonderful! They're taken from numerous editions over the years, and they cover a variety of styles and time periods. I couldn't be happier with this book, and I can't wait for the opportunity to give it to more children who I hope will grow to love it as much as I do.
The world is so full of a number of things
I'm sure we should all be as happy as kings.
An exceptional book.......2006-01-24
The poems are charming and the illustrations are beautiful. I like it as much today as I did when I was a child.
My kids, 6 and 4, were not thrilled with the book either. Their interest in the book revolves around the illustrations--why do the boys look like girls, why are they wearing sailor suits, and where are the pirates?
At any rate, even if your child does not enjoy the poetry, it is a good opportunity for kids to learn about what life was like for children a long time ago--what they wore, the games they played, and how they lived.
A Treasure.......2005-08-09
This is a beautiful book, using some of the same artwork as the book I grew up with in the 1940's, and enhanced by other works of art. The poetry, although from another age, still appeals to children with its beautiful rhythms and clever rhymes.
A beautiful melding of words and pictures.......2002-07-10
Most everyone knows that Robert Louis Stevenson was sickly, both as a child and as an adult, and the happy result for the reading public was his nearly feverish flights of imagination. Here, in an edition of his classic "A Child's Garden of Verses," that fever is complemented in spades by the fantastical illustrations of English artist Joanna Isles.
Isles uses an arsenal of utterly frivolous flowers, borders, insects, birds, kings and queens, fairies, and more to expand upon the imagination exhibited in Stevenson's poems. The children in these pictures are depicted as being in charge, being at one with their environment, and being delighted to be alive.
Some of the illustrations hint at the influence of artists more famed than Isles (Henri Rousseau appears to be a special favorite of hers--see the illustration for "The Unseen Playmate," in which a boy lies down in weeds that might have sprung from the edge of Rousseau's painting "The Dream"). Using both primary colors and pastels, Isles creates a world within the world of Stevenson's verse. The marriage of the two is a happy one.

"It's a pretty good zoo," said young Gerald McGrew, "and the fellow who runs it seems proud of it, too." But if Gerald ran the zoo, the New Zoo, McGrew Zoo, he'd see to making a change or two: "So I'd open each cage. I'd unlock every pen, let the animals go, and start over again." And that's just what Gerald imagines, as he travels the world in this playfully illustrated Dr. Seuss classic (first published back in 1950), collecting all sorts of beasts "that you don't see every day." From the mountains of Zomba-ma-Tant to the blistering sands of the Desert of Zind, Gerald hunts down every animal imaginable ("I'll catch 'em in countries no one can spell, like the country of Motta-fa-Potta-fa-Pell"). Whether it's a scraggle-foot Mulligatawny or a wild-haired Iota (from "the far western part of south-east North Dakota"), Gerald amazes the world with his new and improved zoo: "This Zoo Keeper, New Keeper's simply astounding! He travels so far that you think he would drop! When do you suppose this young fellow will stop?"
But Gerald's weird and wonderful globe-trotting safari doesn't end a moment too soon: "young McGrew's made his mark. He's built a zoo better than Noah's whole Ark!" Some of the text and illustrations--imaginative as they are--are obviously dated, such as the following passage: "I'll hunt in the mountains of Zomba-ma-Tant/ With helpers who all wear their eyes at a slant,/ And capture a fine fluffy bird called the Bustard/ Who only eats custard with sauce made of mustard." And your children may be the first to recognize that attitudes have changed since the xenophobic '50s. But that doesn't mean this tale need be discarded; instead, it should be discussed. Ironically, Seuss was trying here--in his wild, explosive, and sometimes careless manner--to celebrate the joys of unconventionality and the bliss of liberation! (Ages 4 to 8)

Good Not Great.......2007-09-11
This book is very good with the exception of one thing. The book has at least one euphemism with God's name. I try to teach my children not to use God's name in vain, even when done euphemistically. Abstain from the appearance of evil. I generally admire Seuss books greatly but was a bit disappointed in this.
Sadly Disappointed :(.......2007-08-15
Let me first say that my daughter and I LOVE Dr. Seuss books. I cannot even tell you how many times I have read "If I Ran the Circus," "The Sneetches," the Horton books, plus MANY others. I can even read them with my eyes closed because I know them all so well.
I have to say that I found myself very disappointed with this book. It was partly the storyline (capturing and hunting down the animals), but it is mostly the pictures. I am not someone who is easily offended at all, but the pictures in the book of Asians and Africans were so stereotypically horrible. I realize this was written in a different time, but I just don't feel it is truly appropriate to the children of today. When we finished the book, my daughter even said, "Mommy, I didn't really like that book." I guess that was that.
If I Ran the Zoo.......2007-05-24
This is a fabulous Seuss book. I used it during Read Across America week for my Pre-K 4 class. They were enthralled by it. We did several activities - such as creating our own animals for our classroom zoo. It became a fast favorite.
Dr. Seuss at the Zoo.......2007-01-07
This is a great book. The girls of my girlfriend love the book. As soon as I sit down, they grab a book and jump in my lap.
I remember this from my childhood........2006-12-12
This was a favorite when I was a kid. For some reason I always remembered the 10 legged lion, the elephant cat, and the family of What-do-you-know!
My little girl likes this book as a companion to "If I ran a circus"
I am surprised at the claims of racism. Some people read in things that are not there. A child won't become a racist from reading this book. The drawings and the writing are fanciful. Leave it as such and you don't have anything to fear.
After all "It's the gol-darndest zoo On the face of the earth!"

Classic Bonsai of Japan.......2007-09-21
Wow! This is what a Bonsai book should look like! The photos are superb. The story on each tree is very helpful I didn't even mind that they were in the back. I could more of this type of book because the photos were high enough quality to be able to see forms. Anyone interested in seeing quality trees should own this.

Please believe me about this book when I say, if you can at all afford it and if you share the insatiable love for this particular art that I have, it will unequivocally be worth every penny. The trees are manicured by the greatest Japanese bonsai masters in the world and the color reproductions are utterly superb. If you do get it or have a chance to look at it, go to plate no. 21 and feast your eyes. Though I realize I'm being very subjective here, this Hinoki Cypress, in my opinion, epitomizes the art and, indeed, the very purpose of bonsai. The narrative reads, "The more one looks at it, the more one's spirit feels purified, as though one were breathing the air of the remote mountains" . . . Amen . . . I just wish I could see it in person, but this is definately the next best thing.
(Really all of the trees in this book are that way and the inspiration and enjoyment I derive from looking at them is hard to explain)
Also contained is a wealth of written information. The contents read: Preface by John Yoshio Naka (the premier bonsai master and teacher of America); Foreword: Men and Trees by Hideo Aragaki; The History of Bonsai by Hideo Marushima - subdivided into - The Beginnings and General Trends, The Kamakura and Muromachi Periods, The Edo Period, and From Meiji to the Present; Appreciation and Styles; Bonsai Within the Japanese Tradition; Notes to the Plates; and a List of Bonsai by Type. Some of the reproductions are in black and white, but the vast majority are in color.
I also recommend this book if you're merely into the appreciation of beautiful things in nature or if you have a love for botany or an affinity for gardening. Whatever the reason, you really can't go wrong with this gorgeous book. Can you tell I like it?
