Subtitled a "Story of Encouragement for All Ages," the Trellis and the Seed tells the story of how "God has planned something beautiful" for even the tiniest, most unassuming little seed.
The tiny seed begins its mysterious journey in the hands of the seemingly omnipotent "Nice Lady," who predicts--much to the seed's disbelief--that it will make a "beautiful vine with sweet-smelling blossoms." Even as the Nice Lady plants the seed, erects an ambitious trellis, waits for rain, adds fertilizer, and performs all her other nurserial oblations, the seed continues to be baffled by its caretaker's faith. ("It was only a seed, and very, very small. How could it ever be a beautiful vine with blossoms?") How indeed? Suffice it to say, God doesn't send a crafty bird to eat the seed in a harrowing third-act changeup.
Jan Karon's story of patience and faith shows the same folksy charm that infuses her Mitford Years series, and her gentle words find a soothing complement in the skilled, muted watercolors of Robert Gantt Steele (of the Her Story series). (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes
Book Description
In this gently told parable, Jan Karon tells a story of patience, of the special rewards that come from being a little bit different from everyone else, and of the courage to believe in oneself.
In a picturesque and secluded garden, a tiny seed sits in thrilled anticipation of its destiny as a powerful vine, twisting and flowering through the white latticework trellis. But how could such a small seed ever thrive and grow into a strong, healthy, grown-up plant? "Don't worry," Mother Earth says. "God has planned something beautiful for you." But time passes, and the little seed doesn't believe it.
Beautifully illustrated and filled with faith and love, The Trellis and the Seed is Jan Karon at her very best-an inspiration for all ages and an important lesson on God's love for all creatures great and small.

Detailed mathematical development.......2007-09-14
Schlegel and Pérez have put together an outstanding introduction to turbo codes, by way of the basic elements that go into those codes. Although the presentation proceeds in a careful and methodical way, it is intensely mathematical.
In retrospect, if not in their initial development, turbo codes follow naturally from earlier foundations in coding and communication. These authors roughly trace that path. The first steps along the way introduce basic concepts in communications, including the constellation encodings used in modern electronic signalling. As the book moves through traditional convolutional coding we see how the code takes advantage of the constellation to create "coding gain" on the channel - a way of equating raw signaling power to the mathematical power of the code. Moving forward, the authors touch on decoding algorithms of many kinds, block codes, and performance, all with equal thoroughness. The next topic addresses low density parity-check codes, a concept introduced back in the 1960s, but that had languished for lack of avaliable computing power. Next, we see the turbo codes themselves, and all the pieces come together, not just in the encoding but in the distinctly non-classical "soft" decoding algorithms. Remaining chapters explore alternative encoding and decoding techniques.
This is not a reference for all purposes. The treatment assumes relatively little background in coding or communications, but assumes a lot in mathematical preparation. Theory wins out over practice throughout the text. The meticulous reader comes away with deep understanding of the fundamentals, but will still be a long way from creating commercially useful systems. Decide what your needs are - this book addresses some readers and their needs thoroughly, passing completly by other readers (and needs). If you're in the mathematically oriented target audience, however, and are willing to put the time into picking apart the equations, you'll come away with a good understanding of turbo codes, their development, and the theory underlying their performance.

Book Description
The Garden Trellis is an exquisitely illustrated, yet very practical garden gift book. Within its covers, gardeners will be inspired to incorporate small trellises in their gardens and will learn how to build nine simple but elegant designs. A section of thirty fully-illustrated plant profiles will help them choose vines--honeysuckle or roses, porcelain berries or moon flowers--that are appropriate for their gardens and for particular trellis designs.
Written and illustrated by Ferris Cook, The Garden Trellis is suffused with personal experience as well as horticultural detail and lore. Cook--editor of Garden Dreams (1991) and Invitation to the Garden (1992)--draws upon her own gardening observations to explain how she first approached trellises and vines and what she has learned about them. Filled with anecdotes, this charming book also contains an abundance of practical information. Clear and concise instructions for building the trellises, and a list of materials needed, make The Garden Trellis tremendously useful. It will convince gardeners that trellises can be easy to build and that they can transform their gardens with simple vertical accents. A list of sources for ready-made trellises, plants, and seeds will help even the novice trellis gardener get started.

WORTHLESS.......2005-04-29
I PURCHASED THIS BOOK LOOKING FOR TRELLIS DESIGNS. WAS GREATLY DISAPPOINTED NOT ONLY IN THE QUANTITY BUT ALSO IN THE QUALITY. SAVE YOUR MONEY.
Building a Garden Trellis.......2000-06-21
This is a very nice book with excellent illustrations and descriptions of different climbing vines that can be used on a trellis. It also includes pictures of nine trellises that you can build yourself, with the dimensions for each one. A background in woodworking is helpful. The instructions tell you what materials, tools, and supplies are needed, but does not go into detail about the actual construction. Since I have never done woodworking before, I had to get help from friends. I also referred to the Readers Digest "New Complete Do-It-Yourself Manual". I was really pleased at how nice my first trellis turned out. I am getting ready to build another one. The hard part is choosing which trellis pattern I want to use next.
a decent book on building trelises.......2000-06-06
This book provides some measured drawings and information about what types of plants work with trelises. The plant information is good and the drawings are decent, however, they do leave some important measurements out. I have built two trelises for family and friends and they LOVED them. If you can get by with just the basics then this book is useful.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent overall collection with addition of His Top 20.......2001-02-23
I'm a real fan of Desaulniers. His stuff is solid, well-done and sophisticated in style and taste, but not beyond the abilities of most of us at home. In fact, he targets this stuff for us, even testing on our kind of equipment.
This is another of those seasonal approaches, with recipes and menus provided for the four seasons. Helpful in each recipe is an equipment list as well as my favorite: The Chef's Touch in which he adds advice about preparation and/or service or background on how this dish came about, or substitutions one might use, etc. Basics on equipment, techniques and sources are included.
You can tell that care is taken to aid us who put his talents and creations to use in our own homes. Particularly out of this collection do I enjoy serving the Braised Tenderloin of Beef with Mushrooms, Raisins, Figs and Red Wine.
feedback from a former employee.......1999-07-16
First, I admit I used to work at the Trellis for 3 years and loved it. I have the hardcover version of this book but am contemplating getting the paperback just for the gazpacho recipe. Nice recipes and I like Marcel's "Chef's Touch."
Some of the best desserts you will ever taste, great breads, and nice game recipes. They might be for the more adventurous and might be a bit time consuming, so my advice is to take a trip to Williamsburg and taste the real thing!

Save your money!.......2006-03-31
This book is awfull in my opinion. I can not believe how many people gave great reviews on this book. I was skeptical ordering this book, being that it costs a ton. After recieving it, I ended up returning it the same day. This thing is full of worthless scheduals and time lines. I am sorry, but if you have to have a writer show you how to make a fax cover sheet, you probably shouldn't be in the biz.
Documents, Contracts, and Worksheets for Home Builders.......2004-05-09
Wow! An all in one book for the small to medium size construction business. What an excellent resource which is easy to set up and use! And it is great getting this from another builder who has tested these materials in the industry, and not some legal document writer who's just trying to sell a book! Way to go AL Trellis!
Found exactly what I couldn't find elsewhere.......2000-03-24
I run a Real Estate firm dealing with new homes only. I needed to develop a tracking and building method for my onsite realtors to manage custom constrution. This is the only source I've been able to find that gave me a model to use for custom management. The local library carries one as a reference manual, and I looked at it BEFORE purchasing. Great manual!
A bargain at twice the price........1999-12-23
I believe that the dead presidents you spend on this book is one of the best investments you could make as a young business. In effect you are buying many years of research & development that otherwise you would have to do on your own.
A great book, we have found it very useful........1998-07-07
The forms and documents contained in this book have saved me hours. They are clear, concise and easy to work with. I highly recommend this book.
