Amazing things happen when Woman taps her inner Girl Scout. In You Can Do It!, Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas and friends present an engaging cast of female "mentors" who share their expertise in activities ranging from money management to firewalking. Fanning the can-do spirit kindled during her own scouting years, Catuzzi goes beyond the badge with this concept; wealthy information and the book's visual charm encourage women to embrace their aspirations and, in turn, to build self esteem. All who completed this commendable handbook following Catuzzi's tragic death deserve applause.

Want to fly airplanes? Break a habit? Learn photography? Grandcolas demystifies 60 popular activities here. Low-key visualization and a biographical page featuring a talented mentor kicks off each chapter. Badge steps follow, conveying all the necessary how-to's. Margins contain revealing anecdotes, plus thumbnail definitions for mastering each skill's language. For example, the wine appreciation chapter offers brief descriptions of common whites and red, tips for ordering in restaurants, a glass guide, and suggestions for creating a wine journal. The final step--stocking your own cellar, in this case--concludes with a hearty "Congratulations!" and tips for venturing "Beyond the Badge." A pageful of resources including books, magazines, web sites, and related organizations completes each chapter. For those who groove on such things, 60 silver-dollar-sized merit badges await earning (okay, they're just really pretty stickers at the book's end). Never motherly nor professorly, You Can Do It! fuses straight talk and wry humor to keep the read enjoyable, and success within reach.--Liane Thomas

Paint Your Dreams.......2007-01-11
A wonderful self help book for women who, after setting aside personal dreams and aspirations for the sake of others, seek to reconnect with their own unique dreams in life. Based upon the Girl Scout Model of the Merit Badge, Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas' book defines a step by step approach for a variety of accomplishments, big and small. Menors who are experts in the field provide guidance and advice.
For those who do not know, the author, Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas, tragically died on United Flight 93. She had (and has still) a special gift for mentoring and encouraging other women. Very refreshing for today. Proceeds from the book, which was finished by her two sisters, goes to Lauren's favorite charities.
This is a very touching book through which the spirit of a vibrant, compassionate woman lives on.
Disappointing - lots of ideas, but doesn't follow through!.......2006-09-23
I love to do things. I love doing new things! From arts & crafts (etching glass, and blacksmithing), to unusual sports (like sailing or bungee jumping), I am passionate about learning new things.
However, this book - while chalk full of ideas - is very skimpy on actual direction. While other resources are listed (usually another book that you should buy, or a website you need to visit) - I was hoping for a book that not only had great ideas --- but had information on how to actually DO the activity (and what skills I might need to have before-hand before starting).
This book has a wonderful concept, but it would have been even better if it had more details and information on how to actually DO things.
NOTE: the forward written by the author's sister is heartbreaking...and bumped this book from a 1-star to 2-stars, just based on that letter.
A Jumping-In Point.......2006-07-14
I ordered several copies of this book for my mothers' group to use during our summer session. The book has been great to get us talking about both what we need to do and what we want to do for ourselves. Some members are working on more practical badges, like organization, while others are working on beading, knitting etc.--and all of us are giving ourselves credit for hard things we've already accomplished but not thoroughly acknowledged, like childbirth and potty training kids!
We were surprised at some topics that were missing--scrapbooking isn't in there, for example--but this was a minor drawback.
DO IT!.......2006-03-30
Imagine This... There was a woman who was always interested in learning new things. She regularly hiked, biked, kayaked, took classes in cooking, gardening, SCUBA diving, and wine appreciation. According to her friends, she "made things happen." As if that wasn't enough, she decided to write a book that would boost women's self-esteem by helping them reach their own goals and realize their own dreams. A grown-up Girl Scout herself who proudly displayed her badge-laden sashes in her office, she based her book on the concept of learn a new skill, get a badge. I was never a girl scout myself, but as I get older the more I appreciate that concept. I imagine that Lauren Catuzzi Grancolas was the kind of woman who made life fun for the people she knew. She was tragically aboard the doomed Flight 93 on 9/11. Adopting her spirit, her two sisters, one an at-home Mom of three, finished compiling this book in her honor.
You Can Do It is one of those books that is fun to have on your shelf. It is part self-help book and part how-to guide. It presents 60 skills for grown-up girls to master. The badge activites range from life skills like negotiating & financial planning to hobbies like camping and flower arranging to extreme things like flying an airplane or becoming a stand-up comedian. Each skill begins with an "Imagine This..." section that takes you to a time at some point in the future when you have already mastered the skill.
For example, in the Speak Up chapter "Imagine This... Fellow parents nominate you to introduce an important issue to the PTA... Gone are the days when you'd feel sick with anxiety, make excuses, and keep your mouth shut - only to berate yourself later." Then it outlines the Payoffs of mastering that skill ("Fear of public speaking can keep us from pursuing life's possibilities: meeting fascinating people, pursuing promising careers, degrees, and promotions,;and sharing our ideas, talents, and expertise. Don't let your gifts go to waste!") and the Badge Steps you must complete (1. Face your fears. 2. Know your Purpose. 3. Draft your speech. 4. Practice speechifying. 5. Be kind to yourself. 6. Rise and shine.)
There is a mentor, a female who is an expert in that skill, for each section and she offers advice, encouragement, and a list of helpful books, websites, supplies needed, and other references. In the public speaking section, the mentor is a woman named Janet E. Esposito who is the president of a company called In the Spotlight which helps people overcome stage fright. The section also offers a "Beyond the Badge" section for overachievers - in this example it tells you how to get involved in the Toastmaster's Club or get media training.
This book is not the end-all guide for any of the skills presented, but it is a fun jumping off place. It is full of encouragement and inspiration. And I would challenge anyone to flip through this book and not stop and read at least one section and think "You know? I always wanted to try that..."
I LOVE this book!.......2006-03-20
I have bought this book for all of my girl/women friends from college graduate-age to 60 years old! It is really inspirational, and I love hte little challenges it gives you. I consider myself a goal-setter, and this is the perfect map to setting and reaching goals. It's great for getting you thinking about all the things in your life you could never imagine yourself doing -- and then giving you a way to do them! I highly recommend it for any woman.

It's something I can do.......2007-01-28
This book talks about how to make our soils so good that the food we grow on them will nourish our health. I already knew that American soils are so depleted that most of us are malnourished in spite of plenty of food items to eat. Although this author does not insist on everything used being "natural", getting back to natural seems to be the ultimate goal. The plans are something I can work with and I expect the soil on our newly excavated lot to become rich in a fairly short time.

Not about Organic Gardening.......2004-11-15
After reading the excepts about the divine creative energies, I guess my imagination told me that this book was about organic gardening, it isn't. The recommendations are to treat your soil with several steps beginning with soft rock phosphate, then high calcium lime, then others such as copper or iron sulfate. The author further states that that because our soil is soooo depleted, that organic amendments really don't change the soil much and your best bet is to use a combination of organic and synthentic amendments. Personally I was looking for organic methods only and was disappointed.
Great book for anyone that grows or eats food!.......2003-12-13
This is a great book for anyone that gardens, farms, or eats! This book will tell you how to feed your plants, how to measure nourishment levels in the foods you eat, and it will answer many of your basic and advanced gardening questions. This is also a good book for anyone interested in the work of Dr. Carey Reams.

Very Helpful for the Person Interested in Homeschooling.......2006-02-11
This book is 25 years old,and I think we've learned a few things in 25 years, but overall the basic principles in this book were eye-opening and thought-provoking. I'm no longer so fearful of the homeschooling idea and have gained a desire to know more as a result of reading Home Grown Kids.
Customer Reviews:
How about the good old USA?.......2006-01-30
Good book oriented mostly towards foreign travel, but we know that many people want to take that long leisurely trip of a lifetime in the US. "Live Your Road Trip Dream" would be a great companion to this book -- and oriented towards US travel.
Good for retiring abroad only.......2001-03-06
Can't add much to the previous reviews, but be very clear that this book is primarily aimed at people who want to retire OUTSIDE the U.S. It also seems to assume that everyone has lots of money laying around (or own and can sell a home)and they can put that money into CD's and live off the interest. Not all bad, but seems to focus on the few areas of the world that they're most familiar with (France, Portugal, Mexico)
The Well Traveled Book..........2000-02-16
Wow! The cover of this book is tattered from all the passing around. It has gone from one family member to the next. Those of us who were not patient enough to wait our turn have purchased it. Three copies in all are circulating. I found it inspiring because she speaks to the adventurer inside of me, not my fear. Her approach is gentle, liberating, and comprehensible. She spells out the complex issues. The chapters cover the all important steps and questions about going abroad for an extended stay and whether or not it's right for you.
Solid, Nuts-and-Bolts Advice for Adults.......1999-02-21
Filled with practical advice covering both the philosophical ("Don't you love your country?" objections) and the practical (a recommended cat carrier), Knorr breaks a complicated, life-changing idea into specific, do-able tasks. Anyone who has thought about living overseas for months or years must read this book.
Beginning with a personality assessment for the would-be expatriate, Knorr guides the reader through a step-by-step analysis of moving overseas. As the title implies, this is a book for adults who may be encumbered with houses, aging parents, life-long living patterns and other apparent obstacles to making a major life change.
Knorr's cautious approach and practical information are designed to produce either a successful sojourn overseas or the avoidance of what might turn out to be an impulsive mistake.

Fantastic, informative, helpful and wonderfully written book! .......2007-08-25
I looooove this book and find myself referring to it repeatedly when I need to paint a room, redecorate, throw a dinner party or just have people over for cocktails. Perron offers sage, easily digested advice that makes any home or occassion seem tres chic.
Love this book!.......2006-12-02
I bought this book for myself a year ago after browsing through it one random day at the bookstore. [...]. I've spent quite a bit of time flipping around and reading various sections. This is one of those books that you can read according to your need (if you're having a dinner party or trying to make a good salad or attempting to decorate your house) or straight through from front to back. The author's tips are easy-to-follow, common sense (but not so much for us domestically-challenged ladies), and witty. This book doubles as a reference book and chick lit beach read. I have recommended it to many people and continue to. [...]
House Keeping the cool way.......2005-10-07
I saw an article on this book in Cosmopolitan and I liked the tips that were offered, so I went ahead and bought the book.
It is an easy read and it has a lot of common sense stuff that you probably would have figured out yourself but would have preferred someone told you.
Mrs. Perron makes a good job of offering affordable tips and plenty of resources. The decorating tips and guidelines will help you make your living space much more comfortable and 'yours'.
The cooking and wine sections are complete without being complex and eventhough I defend myself rather well in the kitchen, she gives simple ideas to make every meal better.
The entertaining section is one of the best parts of the book. Once I marry, I hope to host get-togethers at home and this chapter offered lots of simple yet great pointers.
I bought this book because I am getting married next March and I want to make sure that I have an idea of how to keep house. This book is a great reference guide and I would recommend it to both girls and guys who want to make their living space a comfortable and hip place to live.
I would have given it 5 stars but I was a bit disappointed that the book has almost no pictures or diagrams which would have been useful for some of the tips and instruction Celeste offers.
Boy did I need this book!.......2005-09-22
I'm basically a total idiot when it comes to keeping house, because I was raised by a groovy '70s mom who couldn't be bothered. That was fun, but frankly I really just needed some homey home advice, and this book gave it to me! Plus it's so cute. I didn't feel like a dork buying it and it is sooooo helpful. Like having a cool next door neighbor who knows stuff.
Must Have and Great Gift.......2005-09-15
This book is an awesome "must have" for every home and it especially makes a great gift for any modern woman, (or domesticated man). It is so much fun and I am embarrassed to say that I am learning so much, but am well on my way to being a domestic goddess ...thanks to Celeste Perron.

Book Description
Unexplainable death under anesthesia occurs almost daily in American Operating Rooms. TERRO.R. is a contemporary maze of intrigue and frightful medical investigative discoveries in such cases of cardiac arrests on the O.R. table. Hopefully, this timely novel is fiction...
Customer Reviews:
Interesting, thought provoking.......2007-09-04
This is an interesting book. It's not exactly War and Peace; It's much shorter, much lighter reading, and probably not as well-written. But the book is interesting and thought-provoking way beyond your average medical thriller. Without giving away any concrete details, the book takes a look at the America, and American institutions through the twisted mindset of a terrorist. This is really a fascinating look at ourselves.
Banned in Tattoo Parlors .......2007-08-18
Once you read this book, you will never, ever want a tattoo. The author provides an insider's view of an anesthesiologist's life in a busy hospital, and informs the reader about many abstruse topics, such as the terrors of tattoo ink. Interwoven through all this is the story of the discovery of a bizarre plot.
Dr Neuschatz's specialized knowledge and experience inform an interesting picture of an anesthesiologist's career. I enjoyed the author's asides about topics as diverse as leaf blowers and railroads. However, sometimes the book takes the readers' understanding too much for granted. For example, Chapter Fourteen states that `the laparoscopic approach was probably one of the most important of all recent advances in surgery,' and goes on to explain that, but I had only a vague idea about what he was talking about.
My enjoyment of the story was disrupted by the abundant typos, especially in punctuation. Perhaps I am profligate: I feel that commas don't cost much and pave the page for the reader. When I read "Morning Nora," I wonder, is there an Afternoon Nora and an Evening Nora? Oh, he means Morning -comma- Nora. These sentences would be spoken differently, so in a novel they should be written differently. His line "Ready Peg" reminded me of Ethelred the Unready; make that "Ready, Peg." I had trouble with this sentence: "What a great idea Kyra I did not think of that!" A comma is a pause or a breath. This sentence would not be spoken in one breath without pause.
Also, the author may contribute to professional journals where contractions are taboo, but in a novel full of dialogue, contractions are called for. Consider this: "If you are wrong and nothing happens to you, they will end up calling you Newman the Nut at the hospital but, if you are right, you will die!" I read with my ears as much as my eyes. IMHO, this sentence would be more natural written thus: "If you're wrong and nothing happens to you, they'll end up calling you Newman the Nut at the hospital, but if you're right, you'll die!"
Nitpicking aside, I enjoyed the book and hope the author is working on his next novel. Just mind your punctuation, Doctor!
Count backwards from 100...........2007-07-19
Dr Joseph Neuschatz's medical/political thriller is based on an interesting and original premise; What if terrorists convinced martyrs-to-be that dying on a surgeon's table for the insurance money was just as noble as wearing a suicide-vest in a train station? It's a pretty frightening thought, medical liability being what it is, but "TerrO.R." spells it all out with frightening plausibility.
Dr Phillip Newman is an Anesthesiologist who enters "TerrO.R." as a young patient unexpectedly dies during a mundane typical procedure. As would be expected, lawsuits start flying and Dr Newman is suspicious of something darker when the amounts leap into the hundreds of millions. What he and other doctors begin to discover are similar deaths with similar legal actions...and Dr Newman battles to find out the connection.
The book is well done and a quick read. (I got it done on a mere 3 morning subway commutes.) I was also able to read through the medical procedures without feeling lost, which is no minor feat for a medical writer. There are a couple sticking points in that the dialogue is stilted, but understandable. If you're ready to deal with that, then you'll enjoy the suspenseful "TerrO.R."
Interesting premise, but needs a good editor..........2007-07-08
I was contacted by Joseph J. Neuschatz, M.D. to see if I would be interested in reviewing his novel TerrO.R.. Medical thrillers are always of interest to me, so I accepted. After a quick read (it's not very long), I can say that the premise of the novel is interesting, but it suffers the same problem as many other self-published/print-on-demand books... the lack of a good editor to clean up the writing and shape the story.
To avoid giving away too much of the plot, I won't go into much of it here. Suffice it to say that an anesthesiologist is involved in a case where an apparently healthy young man is undergoing a tattoo removal procedure. While under anesthesia, the patient goes into cardiac arrest and dies. The family sues almost immediately, and the anesthesiologist is devastated as it's his first lawsuit. After some investigation, he discovers a number of other cases that seem to have the same scenario and outcome. He takes it upon himself to try and get to the root of the problem... assuming the deaths were not accidental.
Normally medical thrillers involve surgeons or general practitioners, not anesthesiologists. Neuschatz is himself an anesthesiologist, and you learn quite a bit about the specialty during the story. The plot twist at the end was unusual, and isn't something I've seen or considered before. The major issue with the story is the writing. The conversation between the characters was pretty stilted, and I just couldn't see dialogue between two people playing out as it was written. In addition, many of the surgery scenes, while interesting, didn't have anything to do with the story. Given the book is only 150 pages to begin with, it felt as if a short story was trying to be padded out to novella size for stand-alone publishing. If it had been published by a major publishing house under the guidance of an experienced editor, I think the outcome would have been much better.
If you have the chance to read TerrO.R. and need something to fill a couple of hours, go for it. Just make sure you're not expecting something along the lines of Palmer or Cook.
A Bracing, Bright, Unique Insight into Terrorism's Possible Variations.......2007-07-06
Joseph J. Neuschatz has a decided edge in writing this highly intriguing and frightening novel about the insidious invasion of terrorist activity within the field of American Medicine. As a practicing anesthesiologist he witnesses those moments of life/death decisions and crises from the vantage of sitting at the head of a surgical patient, a stance that obviously has opened his imagination to some frightening possibilities. He has the tenor of the OR down pat and the vocabulary and knowledge of medicine as tools on which to build a credible story. And he happens to write VERY well!
Phillip Newman, MD is the kind of anesthesiologist everyone admires: he is bright, thoroughly trained and experienced physician, an excellent technician and a warm human being with a keen sense of humor. Married to a supportive nurse wife Kyra, he seems to have it all. On a seemingly routine case of a tattoo removal by a plastic surgeon on a 19-year-old kid under pressure from his father, Newman approaches the case with his usual excellent skills, until the patient abruptly goes into ventricular fibrillation and dies on the table. Stunned, Newman must inform the patient's father who refuses an autopsy and within hours is suing Newman and the hospital for the death. Pandora's Box is opened, and because Newman is an astute thinker, he ponders every aspect of the case, looking for the cause of the surprising death, only to discover that similar deaths plus autopsy refusals plus law suits AND fairly new life insurance policies taken out by the families of the deceased create a startling pattern. Research on the internet, email communication with other anesthesiologists (one of whom has a brother who is connected with the FBI), and interaction with the hospitals, insurance companies, and lawyers open the pathway to discover a unique mode of fundraising for terrorist organizations: 'suicide bombers' in the form of freshly tattooed young men with savvy knowledge as to medication interactions come sharply into focus!
While there are many post 911 terrorist suspense thrillers on the bookshelves, Neuschatz has cornered a topic that is not only compelling, but also one that is delivered in a writing style that makes it wholly convincing. This is his first novel and in addition to Neuschatz' already present ability to use 'medical speak' in a manner that is sophisticated and never 'dumbs down' the reader, and to blend tense reality atmosphere with a good natured sense of humor when appropriate, he does encounter some problems that experience will easily alter. Some of the OR characters need to be fleshed out to allow the reader some insights that seem to belong solely to Newman; the timing of the last third of the novel seems to drop the tension in favor of making sure the reader gets exposure to Newman's love life with his wife; and there are too many typos that cry for an astute editor's eye. But these are minor considerations when the impact of this immensely interesting and conceived page-turner is addressed. Neuschatz has a sparkling wit and enviable vocabulary and knows how to unfold a storyline as well as many of the best authors out there. Let's hope there will be more novels from him! Fix a cup of tea and curl up in your favorite chair for wonderful reading. I can not imagine that anyone would not find this book to be of value. It will change your whole outlook on your adult family relationships. It is especially appropriate for this time of year and the preparation for holiday visits. Yet, the book has sound advice and practical suggestions that we can use at any time.
It is easy to read with beautiful illistrations and examples. Most of all, it includes thought provoking questions that encourages each of us to consider the messages in the book in the context of our individual family situations.
This will be a book that you want to give to others. And one I would want my own children to have when they become adults.

It's a time of new opportunities, an exciting time to rethink the very concept of home to suit changing needs and interests. The House to Ourselves takes you on a tour of 20 homes designed for this joyous and liberating phase in life, when couples can have the home they've always dreamed of. These homes reflect the many opportunities available for empty-nesters, whether renovating an existing home, staying in a beloved neighborhood but building a new house, or creating a new home in an entirely new community.

Your High-End Dream House.......2006-12-25
Typical of its kind with lots of great photos of fabulous makeovers, requiring extensive remodeling and an architect. But it does have some concrete ideas that push it up a notch over the competition.
Outstanding resource.......2004-07-10
What an outstanding resource for empty-nesters looking to redefine their lives! The house is yours again, what do you want to do with it for the second-half of your life? I can't wait until the last child leaves so I can put so many of these examples to use. Well, I'll enjoy the time left and just use it to plan. The attractive photo of Todd Lawson is an added benefit.
Fabulous book, somewhat mis-titled!.......2004-06-21
When I picked up this book, I thought it was for empty nesters and retirees who wanted to downsize or "undecorate" the kids out of their former rooms. Not so! These homes are for people who have lots of living and big plans for themselves. There are only a couple of places I would call "retirement" homes. The rest include homes with offices to make work life go along with home life, homes with studios for the fulfillment of dreams and even homes with guest wings and guest houses to welcome whole troops of extended family. Absolutely brimming with ideas.
The House to Ourselves.......2004-05-05

The Wiggins.......2004-04-01
We purchased this book hoping to find new ideas to fit our needs. It was obvious the authors researched the material at length and offered a variety of solutions that could be adaptable to any lifestyle. Lots of illustrations which helps visualization. We are able to incorporate many of the suggestions in this book to our remodeling projects. Now the hard part - tackling the hammer and nails.
