Book Description
Nothing lights up a room like flowers. Whether it's baby's breath draped on a table at a wedding reception, clusters of daffodils in small pots scattered throughout a living room or a bucket of sunflowers on a picnic table, a strategically placed bouquet has the power to create a mood and make us feel special. Unfortunately, most of us don't know how to display flowers properly, and they often end up clumsily thrown together in a vase.
In A Passion for Flowers, Carolyne Roehm teaches readers how to create arrangements that set off a flower's natural beauty. She discusses the overall features of dozens of the most popular flowers and helps readers understand how these elements relate to each other. Though the book is filled with ideas for brightening holidays and special occasions, Roehm stresses that the magic of flowers should be enjoyed year-round. Organized by season to profile the blossoms as they come into their glory, bouquet "recipes" with step-by-step instructions are sprinkled throughout along with special care instructions for more sensitive blooms. Sections detailing containers, conditioning flowers and elements of floral design are included at the end of the book. A Passion for Flowers features 250 breathtaking photographs and is a treasure trove of knowledge and inspiration that will help readers stop and smell the roses every day.
Customer Reviews:
Porn for gardeners..........2007-10-09
Forgive my crass headline, but honestly - this book is so beautifully photographed, so lovely to look at, so engaging... it's nearly impossible to stop thinking about it.
This is more than a coffee table book filled with nice pictures of flowers, it is ART. Each photo has been carefully staged and presented in a manner that evokes memories of 17th century still-life paintings.
If you can tear yourself away from the pictures, you'll find useful information on arranging flowers in European fashion as well as tips for choosing the appropriate vessel for displaying your arrangements. I found it particularly useful that Ms. Roehm identified each of the blooms used in her arrangements, as well as what time of year they are in season.
In my opinion, this is by far the best of Ms. Roehm's books, and if I had money to buy only one - this would be it. I highly recommend it!
Gorgeous.......2007-03-20
Just so lovely that my four year old granddaughter could not resist opening this book. Better still, she carefully turns the pages and studies each flower....now she gets flower lessons on each visit.
True passion begins early! Another flower lover is born!
The Ultimate Gift for the Lover of Beauty.......2001-05-26
Carolyne Roehm demonstrates her exquisite taste from the very first page of this lavish book. Organized by season, each chapter celebrates the beauty of all sorts of blossoms in stunning arrangements. These arrangements are lush and full and show an artist's mastery of texture and extraordinary combination of color. The photos are reminiscent of the sumptuousness of the movie, The Age of Innocence, with lovely gilded gold, crystal and porcelain containers. The photography truly is breathtaking and includes not only close ups of the bouquets but also glimpses of elegantly set dining tables, gorgeously furnished rooms and spacious gardens. Her prose is poetry, but also practical in the sections on containers, elements of style and basics. A better book on flower arranging couldn't possibly exist.
**Fantastic Photos**.......2001-05-04
This book is a joy- the vibrant photos actually helped me through the long Pennsylvania winter. Lots of great tips on arrangements- from colors and containers. I envy Roehme's budget for entertaining!
Incredible photography of the most beautiful flowers.......2000-12-30
The flowers depicted in this book gave their lives for a truly noble cause and have been honored appropriately by the photographer. Quite simply they were displayed and photographed in the most beautiful fashion possible. Perhaps the key word there is fashion -- Carolyn Roehm has the experience and eye for fashion, having been a former designer, and that experience may be what enabled her to display the flowers in a way that truly does them justice. I coveted this book for a long while, having seen it in a bookstore, and couldn't get it out of my mind. Now that I own it, I consider myself very fortunate indeed. The book is divided into the four seasons. Particularly strong are the photos depicting the flowers prevalent in Fall and Spring. The smoky greens, yellows, oranges, reds, and browns of the Fall months's foliage manage to look festive and lovely despite their representing the waining of life until the Spring. The photos of lilacs and daffodils in the section on Spring make one hopeful for the end of winter and make one realize why all that shivering is eventually worthwhile. I loved this book and recommend it heartily for anyone who loves pretty flowers and doesn't particularly have any special horticultural knowledge.

I just saw this book while visiting a B&B on a lavender farm and came right home to try to find a copy to buy - i just had to have it! The photographs of commercial lavender fields in bloom are unbelievably gorgeous and make you want to take the next plane to Provence or Norfolk. The history is fascinating and also beautifully illustrated with pictures and quotations. The crafts are lovely and the recipes tempting. This book is a treat for the gardener, cook, craftsperson, traveller, historian and many others as well.

The main body of the book gives extensive coverage of annual, perennial, bulbous, and woody species for commercial cut flower production, including propagation and growing-on methods, environmental factors, yield in the field, greenhouse forcing, stage of harvest, postharvest handling, and pests and diseases. Reflecting decades of research and writing by two distinguished horticulturists, Specialty Cut Flowers, Second Edition, Revised and Enlarged will be an indispensable reference for the nursery bookshelf.

An Essential Reference for the Cut Flower Grower.......2001-07-29
Everyone interested in cut flower growing must have this text in his library. Allan Armitage is a renound researcher in herbaceous plants, who's earlier work was in specialty cut flowers. This is a serious text, not a "gardening" book.
Introductory sections give basics of cut flower growing, but the bulk of the book is devoted to discussing individual species. Chapters include annuals, perennials, bulbs, and woody species. Within each chapter, species are discussed in great detail. Everything you need to know to grow each cut flower is here: propagation, greenhouse and field performance, harvest and postharvest, pests and diseases, and lists of varieties are all given for each species.
This book is very well organized. Text is concise, but written with personality. There are line drawings for many species, but there are few color photographs.
This book is specificaly for cut flower growers. Lynn Bycznski's The Flower Farmer is another book not be missed by those interested in cut flower growing. Her book is an overview of the business and process of cut flower growing, also with some information on individual species. Another excellent Armitage text, Herbaceous Perennial Plants, is better suited for the serious gardener.

Great recipes.......2003-09-07
Nice collection of recipes for potpourri and sachets. Some ofthe ingredients are tough to find but I found most via the internet for the couple I've tried so far. Last half of the book is on flower drying, arraging and wreaths - not really my thing but I really enjoyed the first half.
I could almost smell the fragrances.......2000-08-02
This is one reference book that I read cover to cover, not wanting to miss a single wonderful idea. I bought the book mainly because I have a huge rose garden and wanted potpourri recipes, but I was enraptured by every chapter, including making sachets, door hangings, and dried arrangements, and the section on the centuries-old "meanings" that have been attached to many flowers. There is even an intriquing recipe for making "wet" potpourri, a concoction that I had never heard of before but now intend to try! This book is beautiful, nicely organized, and well written. I could almost smell the scents and see the colorful gardens as I read. A must have selection.
The Scented Room.......2000-02-26
This book is wonderful. I have had this book for about ten years and, although I have purchased many beautiful books since, this one remains a favorite. The pictures are beautiful and the instructions are easy to follow. Also, sources for purchasing any ingredients you would need are listed at the back of the book. Buy it -- you will cherish it!
very descriptive, good for amateurs.......1999-10-28
i've had this book for two days and i love it. it truly inspires me. its easy to read and the fragrant recipes are simple and inexpensive to make. i created my first dried floral arrangement and i was amazed with the results. i love to walk into a room and be surrounded by pretty flowers and nice aromas. you can definitely achieve that with the help of this book. enjoy!
In a class by itself........1999-08-18
Absolutely the best book on making fine potpourri (dry or moist) and much more. Also included are beautiful wreaths, dried flower bouquets, pomanders, cologne-type floral and herbal waters, bath bags, scent pillows, fabric sachets, drawer liners, etc. Gardening and flower drying information too. From cover to cover, fabulous ideas for elegant home decorating with antiques or inexpensive fakes. Gorgeous photographs.

"Nature is a good guide; it teaches us everything," says master floral designer Christian Tortu. It is the perfect summation of his work. Unpretentious yet stunningly beautiful, Tortu's arrangements have drawn inspiration directly from his childhood treks through the countryside of his native town of Anjou, France.
Sensational Bouquets by Christian Tortu is at once an intimate profile of the artist--who has designed floral arrangements for Dior and Chanel, as well as for the Cannes Film Festival--and a useful guide to how he creates his exciting and unique bouquets.
Tortu always looks to nature for inspiration. There, he finds freedom: of form, of color, of scent, all mixed together flawlessly, without artifice or ostentation. Paying homage to nature's inherent sense of design, Tortu creates stunning arrangements while bending all the rules of traditional flower arranging. Unexpected plants join in clever, surprising combinations to celebrate the drama of nature--of birth and death, and everything in between. Garden roses nestle in a tangle of blackberry branches much as they would in an overgrown garden. Wild thistles poke their prickly blossoms out of a bunch of softer, rounder bred thistles and speak of a miraculous harmony between wild and cultivated plants. Green almonds, lotus fruit, and poppy capsules come together in an enthralling play of yellow against green.
As if Sylvain Thomas's sumptuous photographs of Tortu's arrangements weren't inspiration enough, the text of Sensational Bouquets reads like poetry. This book will both motivate and guide readers to toss out what they've learned about flower arranging and let nature and their own unbridled intuition dictate how they assemble their next gathering of wild and/or cultivated plants. --Robin Donovan
Book Description
This gorgeous volume celebrates the floral designs of Christian Tortu, who has dazzled followers the world over with his ability to create novel compositions that show off the shapes, colors, textures, and singular beauty of individual flowers to their ultimate advantage. He has designed flowers for the great fashion houses of Dior and Chanel as well as for the Cannes Film Festival. From a simple yet striking circular bouquet of tulips tied in raffia to glorious bursts of dahlias in wax vases, from delicate rose petals and orchids floating in silver shells to an enchanting mix of water lilies and hyacinths in transparent glass, more than 100 color photographs taken exclusively for this book bring to life the astonishing still-life arrangements of this internationally heralded French floral designer. This lavishly illustrated volume will be a treasured gift for all plant and flower lovers.
Customer Reviews:
Christian Tortu book.......2007-05-15
I got hooked on his designs while in Paris. If you are ever there you MUST visit his shop(s)!!
Indulge your Eye and Insight.......2003-12-30
SENSATIONAL BOUQUETS BY CHRISTIAN TORTU is a visual treat as well as a learning inspiration for approaching that most personal craft of bringing the garden into the home - gathering and arranging flowers. Christian Tortu apparently has a following in Paris where he has a florist shop which has emphasized his creed of "All plants are born free and created equal." Having learned his craft and his passion for the natural garden from his parents as he matured in the Anjou gardens, gathering flowers from nature to place at the disposal of clients who yearn for the beauty of the garden to enter their home in ways other than window views, Tortu doesn't believe in the traditional 'sprays' of flowers place in an expensive family heirloom vase on a sterile table. Instead he combines fruit, vines, all phases of a flower's life ( bud, blossom, denuded vestige ) with grasses and all the elements found in the natural setting of his flowers. The results are lush, compact, original thoughts that are startlingly beautiful.
This is writer Corine Delahaze's first outing and she shows promise of a fine observor and poet. The photography is by Sylvain Thomas and emphasizes the closeup details as well as the free-standing wonders of Tortu's designs. The combination of text and photographs balances well with Tortu's creations. There is much more to learn about nature than just an ordinary treatise on flower arranging here. In Tortu's words "Nature is a place of total freedom. All plant life is accepted as equal." And from this humble belief Tortu lifts the spirit as well as the imagination with his artist's gift.
Intriguing New Ways to Look at Flowers!.......2001-04-12
I enjoyed this book very much. Sensational Bouquets is rich in new thoughts about what flowers and plants represent, filled with novel arrangements, and is enriched by outstanding photography of those arrangements. After reading and viewing this book, you will never think about nature and natural beauty in quite the same way. You will be the richer for the experience, because your sense of beauty will expand as a result.
Christian Tortu grew up on a truck farm in Anjou, and is proud of his agricultural roots. Now he designs backdrops for fashion shows and the Cannes Film Festival. He operates floral shops in major cities around the world.
Let me share a little of his philosophy, as described in the many sections he wrote for the book. "Each plant is a fragment of a landscape . . . ." In his arrangements, he creates that sense of landscape in a way that I have never seen before in flower arrangements. Nature is palpable in them.
"If man were to stop rushing around for one moment, he might take a look at flowers -- and then take a closer look." I remember having that experience in the orchid garden in Honolulu. I was enthralled with the beautiful blossoms in my 20 minute self-guided tour. As I was about to leave, an elderly gentleman asked me if I would like to have some help in looking around. I agreed, and spent the next three hours going over the same ground with him. Except I saw about 100 times as much with his help. I was astonished at how many delightful orchids I had totally missed in my haste (and I had thought I was being leisurely).
"In time, his convictions would crumble, and he would realize classification is fruitless even beyond flowers." People love to judge, and that judgment gets in the way of really seeing and experiencing life. So these arrangements are a metaphor for breaking down our closed mental sets.
The basic premise is that "all flowers are created equal." Weeds and shrubbery get as much attention as rare orchids. And the moment of perfection is not all that is explored. " . . . [E]very stage of the flower is a moment that deserves attention." One bouquet even captures burned foliage and flowers after a fire. Seeing these images makes one realize the truth of these observations. " . . . [I]n the name of harmony, each one [arrangement] has its own touch of anarchy."
Mr. Tortu changes things in terms of color, type of composition, and form. I was especially fascinated by his many monochromatic arrangements, especially the green bouquets.
The book is done in sections: Genesis; Revolution(s); Crossroads; and the Chronicle of a Black Bouquet. Using these themes makes it easier to appreciate the statements his designs make.
Here are my favorites in the book:
Agave foliage with euchasis in gray wax vases
Green tomatoes and basil, tomato flowers, dog rose fruit and vine foliate
Green arum lilies, tea grass, viburnum, and narcissus buds
Garlic flower and nasturtium
Nasturtium, wild strawberries, and blackberries
Privet berries and King Arthur orchids
Lime tree branches and iris
Violets
White hyacinth, and catmint
Osage orange, pears and chayote, quince, eggplant, and begonia
After you enjoy this delightful book, I suggest that you take some other element of nature and see how arranging it differently changes your perceptions. Now that it is spring, you could start by taking fresh shoots and making arrangements of them in new combinations, new shapes, and in different types of containers.
Open your mind to the potential of new combinations, expressed in new ways!

The Book of Dried Flowers : A Complete Guide to Growing, Drying, and Arranging
ASIN: 1561582859
Release Date: 1999-10-01 |
Book Description
A fresh approach to the art of drying and arranging flowers, Dried Flowers for All Seasons shows how to create dried flower arrangements with the color and appeal of fresh flowers. Most dried flower books take a craft approach to dried flowers that results in arrangements looking pale and lifeless - dried. Using the Gertley's time-tested techniques, anyone can dry flowers that look nearly alive, preserved with the vibrancy and color of being just picked from the garden. Especially amazing is the fact that flowers not usually associated with dried arrangements, like spring flowers such as tulips and daffodils, can be dried as successfully as more traditional types for drying and look stunningly alive. The book is arranged by season and there are several types of arrangements for each, including wreaths, sprays, and traditional bouquets. Seasonal arrangements use flowers of the season for dramatic effects. Unusual holiday arrangements give this book special appeal.
Dried Flowers for All Seasons is also the most complete book on dried flowers, including in-depth information on growing flowers to dry, detailed instructions for drying techniques suitable for a wide variety of flowers, as well as a glossary of over 60 flowers particularly suitable for drying. Michael Gertley's vivid color photography and Jan Gertley's warm and elegant illustrations document the step-by-step directions for creating the arrangements.

I was looking for more relaxed natural looks - if you want a good book on drying flowers, taping them to wire and arranging them then this would be a great book for that. Lots of beautiful pictures to inspire and seems to have lear instructions. Some info on the use of silica too.
Beginner's Answer to Dried Flowers.......2002-08-29
This is an excellent book. What I especially liked were the photos of the authors performing the techniques decribed. Very straight forward with lots of good project ideas. They included an extensive list of flowers, how they should be harvested, and the best drying technique for each. I've bought several dried flower books and if I'd bought this one first, it would be the only one I'd own.
WHAT A BOOK!.......1999-11-01
Every photograph and illustration is stunning. The Gertleys have brought dried flower arranging to a level that I've never seen anywhere in any other book.
