Book Description

What more appealing scene can you conjure up on a wintry day than a pair of comfortable armchairs pulled up to a crackling fire while wisps of smoke curl from the chimney top? All your senses are in use--the sight of the flickering flames, the sound of the crackling logs, the warmth on your face, and the fragrance and taste of wood smoke. The hearth truly is the essential core of every home, whether it is an actual fireplace or merely a mantel displaying the treasures and trophies of intertwined lives. Long past the days of strictly utilitarian purpose, fireplaces and stoves are a design feature in their own right. They are available in an array of styles, sizes, and colors; offer a variety of fuel choices; and feature benefits beyond mere aesthetics, including heat and cooking. Fireplaces and heat sources are also widely found in many rooms throughout the house, including the family or living room, bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom, as well as outdoors. And the latest innovations in fireplace and stove technologies make having one no longer an expensive proposition.

While the building market is seeing growth in the fireplace market, so too is the remodeling marketplace. In fact, many homeowners are refacing their existing fireplace, upgrading their wood fireplace to gas, or simply installing a new faux fireplace where there wasn't one before. In this book readers will find hundreds of examples of all types of indoor fireplaces--from wood to gas, freestanding, and ventless--and stoves, both wood and pellet. In addition to gorgeous photos of a full range of fireplace styles, materials, and décor for indoor and outdoor fireplaces and stoves, solid information on practical design considerations--maintaining a fireplace or stove, remodeling an existing fireplace, safety, converting a wood-burning fireplace to gas, and the like--are explained in detail, making this the only book on the market to offer the breadth of content on both the design and practical components of all types of the latest indoor and outdoor fireplaces and stoves. Aesthetic and practical design considerations for hearths and mantels, built-ins and storage, lighting, and accessories like screen, brooms, and bellows are also covered. A thorough glossary, resources, and index provide reference-like information.

5 out of 5 stars A Design Guide and a Picture Book.......2007-02-03

Fire places seem evoke some kind of hidden memories out of our distant path when the fire at the mouth of the cave kept the tigers away. This has become so important that even apartments now seem to come with fire places.

This book, as is usual with this publisher is a beautifully illustrated, beautifully printed collection of fire places that range from a simple rock lined fire pit out in the yard to fire places that are the design center of the house, wood stoves that meet the new EPA regulations, to antiques that may have come from grandmothers house.

Besides the beautiful photography, this book also includes design tips, and the regulations that come from building codes. And there are discussions of more types of fire places than you could ever imagine without seeing it.

I got this book because my house does not have a fire place, and it's the next major extension that I plan to add. This book answered all the questions that I had, except do I want something indoor or outside. We have a long season for entertaining outside.

Book Description

During the middle of the 20th century, neon signs turned North America's roadside into a luminous wonderland. The most compelling signs were figural: imaginative, cartoon drawings in light. These unforgettable depictions of exploding bowling pins, crashing cars, baton twirling majorettes, and lassoing cowboys were the fodder for legend and lore. Neon designer Len Davidson has captured the magic with over 350 photos of superb vintage signs. He has drawn on renowned photographers, museums, and private collections, as well as his own Neon Museum of Philadelphia pieces to compile the definitive photo archive. Davidson has also expressed the legend in words. The pages echo with the voices of sign makers and shopkeepers, photographers and preservationists. Architects and sign artisans will find this collection invaluable. It is also an essential volume for anyone who has been captured by the spell of the highway and neon's siren song.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very useful book.......2007-03-31

This book has a nice variety of vintage signs. It is great to see the original color of the neon since I am restoring an old Pegasus that came off a Mobil gas station.

The author appears knowledgeable and it is difficult to find books on this subject. It is fun to read the short discriptions of the histories of the signs and anecdotes from other collectors.

Anyone who grew up with neon signs would enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for those who appreciate neon.......2004-12-21

I just recieved this book as a gift and I love it. The book is filled with color photos of neon from around the country, and includes a fair amount of info on each sign. I was unaware this book exsisted until i recieved it, but it was a pleasant surprise. This book is a must have for vintage enthusiests, and fans of neon in general.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Book!!.......2004-07-01

Properly titled VINTAGE NEON (as shown on the cover) this book contains incredible photos and narrative of these beautiful works of art. Fans of "Americana" will especially enjoy this fading slice of American Roadside Life.

5 out of 5 stars Glowing Neon.......2000-01-28

Mr. Davidson's expertise in both the technical and artistic creation of neon is more spectacular than the lights themselves. Although expensive, this book is by far the most authoritative glimpse the craft and its appreciation than any other volume ever written. In the vernacular of the modern generation, it is 'tubular'. Almost every conceivable manner of neon is included; businesses include car showrooms, shoe stores, butcher shops, bakeries, motels, drive-ins (both theatrical and eatery), and in abundance, restaurants. Locations include many havens of neon distribution, such as the author's beloved Philadelphia, Route 66, California, and a much overlooked plethora of vivid glamour, Vancouver British Columbia (Canada). This volume is absolutely enchanting for anyone who has ever spent a night in a lodging illuminated on the exterior by a tint of pink, green, yellow, or blue. Of the 200 books in my personal 'Roadside Library', this is my favorite. Anyone who treasures illumination will consider "VINTAGE NEON" enlightening.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing collection of old signs........1999-10-25

A tribute to the forgotten signmakers of the 1920's through the present. Lots of color pictures contributed by neon sign enthusiasts from around the country. Expensive, but if you like old signs, this book will make you happy.

5 out of 5 stars How to write a photographic book.......2005-11-18

Why is it so hard to find good photography books? Why is it so difficult for good photographers to write them?

Fortunately among the mounds of photography books available, there are exceptions. Those rare, rare books that are worthy of your purchase, worth the time that you spend reading and yes, studying them.

Outdoor Lighting: Fashion & Glamour is such a book. While not new (copyright 2003), this is a photographer's book and as such, will age very well. It sticks to its' subject. Filled with breathtakingly beautiful images. Diagrams for every shot. THIS is how to write a photographic book.

What makes this such an exceptional book? Cathy Joseph dissects each and every image for us. She starts by giving you "The Brief", why the photograph was taken, how it was to be used and instructions given to the photographer. She then discusses the selection of the location, the composition and lighting and technique. Every photo has a fact file and a technical details box. A section at the end of the book gives contact information for eveyone of the wonderful photographers in the book. Webpages, phones, email addresses. Alas, she doesn't list her own contact information for those of us who are now her devoted fans.

This book is well worth your money, well worth studying the techniques listed. This book WILL make you a better photographer, and isn't that what these books are supposed to be about?

Bring us more like this, Cathy Joseph!

4 out of 5 stars great setup collection.......2005-04-17

I really liked this book. Each page shows you a great photograph, the brief, the location, composition and lighting description. There is a lot of creativity in each picture and there are a lot of cheap and simple but effective setups.

I gave this book only 4 stars because the only thing I miss is an extended description of the lighting techniques used in these pictures, since it only resumes to a couple of lines. The author don't teach you ilumination techniques by itself but she presents you a collection of mini interviews with the photographers in the structure of: brief, location, composition, lighting technique and a diagram. Some diagrams are missing and some are not so clear.

I think I've learned much more than outdoor lighting. The book gave me a source of inspiration, film techniques (there is no single digital shot in this book), composition sense (I'm not afraid of cutting out the faces anymore) and the conviction you don't have to spend thousand of dollars for a great lighting setup.

4 out of 5 stars great book.......2003-11-25

I personally feel that I got exactly what i expected.
A book with great full length up-to-date color images, diagrams so that you can see exactly how the lighting was set up, a paragraph explaining why the photographer was hired and what look the client wanted, how and why the photographer chose a certain location and the photographers own comments about the shoot. Oh, also you get to know the camera, film and settings that were used to capture the image.

I like this book because the photographs were actually good!
I felt i learned a bit about the photographer as one says that he never uses reflectors or flashes and how another confessing that it took 4 rolls of film to get the right shot for his portfolio.

Now you're not going to get a full history of the photographer or a step by step guide to shooting outdoor location shots but there is enough said about each picture to give you an better understanding about how it's done.

I look through this book 3-4 times a week and it delivers everytime.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Guide.......2006-03-25

I found this to be a very good guide on the subject of lighting and exposure for location photography. The sections on lighting were certainly the highlight of this book. The author goes into great detail to explain the concepts of light modification and subtracting light which is rarely discussed in other books. The photos are well done and lit properly. My only negative was that some of the poses looked a little forced, which is why I rated the book 4 stars and not 5. Overall, it is a very good book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Discussions on Metering.......2005-11-21

The full name of this book is: 'Lighting and Exposure Techniques for Outdoor and Location Portrait Photography'. Whew, big title for a book.

I like this book... mostly it stays on target and provides useful, replicable information.

What I like about this book:

1) Only the smallest amount of filler;
2) Stunning images. I WANT to do portraits like JJ Allen.
3) Good diagrams
4) One of the better discussions on metering that you're likely to ever read. A good thing too, knowing proper metering techniques is vital for outdoor photography.
5) Delivers the kinds of pearls of wisdom that we buy these books for. Consider: "When using mismatched light sources, always use the light that casts shadows with the sharpest edge as your main light source."

What I don't like about this book:

Not a lot, really. Mr. Allen is somewhat of a medium format bigot, with a rather condescending chapter on what to do if you must use 35mm... You CAN still make acceptable images!

Still, everyone's entitled to their opinion and the tips and techniques that you'll pick up in this book makes it easy to overlook its' very few warts.

Good stuff, if you shoot much outside, you'll want this book.

3 out of 5 stars Great photos and helpful text.......2004-03-29

The book is helpful and directive with good explanations on how to set up on-location lighting, mostly using natural light. It is beneficial to me, however, it deals primarily with medium format, non-automatic, cameras and equipment; only one chapter deals with 35mm and autofocus cameras. Even though the book was written in 2003 the author never mentions digital photography, never even touches on it. That is a drawback. If you are using digital, this book may not be good for you. The information about use of lighting, diffusers, and reflectors is still a great help. I do recommend the book.

5 out of 5 stars A Logical Approach For Better Portrait Photography.......2003-08-03

Most portait photography books teach by making you a "clone" of the author. Mr. Allen's aproach to portraits (in both of his books) is not that way. He teaches you how to think about your own style of portraiture and then how to test your technical approach in a step by step method, so as they say, "you can get it on the film". If you follow his logic, there is no way you cannot end up a better photographer.

4 out of 5 stars Rankin Redux.......2002-07-17

This is exactly the same book as "Creative Lighting for Outdoor Living"; only the title has been changed. There is something vaguely suspicious about re-titling the same text and illustrations to lure the unwary into a second purchase. That said, my earlier review stands but my opinion of Lark Books has taken a fall.

Something's glowing out in the desert night, but it isn't New Mexico, and these creatures aren't visitors from another planet. There is a pig with wings--who may well be fleeing the Nevada barbecue establishment he advertises--and a creature who looks something like Elmer Fudd with a lightning bolt for a body. But that's as close as we get to alien beings, unless you count the penguin in a ten-gallon hat and cowboy boots. These colorful images of cartoon cowboys, cowgirls, women bathing in martini glasses, and martinis sans women illuminate an aspect of Americana--the neon sign--that has been largely neglected.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars THEY'RE BRIGHT, ALRIGHT!.......2004-04-01

"Neon Nevada" is as glitzy and eye-popping as the lights that line Las Vegas. It's also a collection of photographs of a cultural phenomenon - neon lights.

Neon signs have long illuminated the road sides and cities of Nevada, perhaps more impressive because they wink against a still desert sky. What would the Las Vegas strip be without the multi-colored lights that pop and swirl above it? Or, who would recognize Reno without the giant red art deco letters that proclaim it is the biggest little city in the world?

The accompanying text offers a short history of neon sign making from its origins in Paris to its spread across the United States. While bright with humor, Neon Nevada is also a valuable commentary on our cultural heritage.

    3 out of 5 stars expert opinion.......2000-07-13

Great value but seriously dated. Outdoor lighting has gone through a revolution since 1984. The market is now filled to bursting with manufacturer's innovations including the adoption of low voltage halogen lamps (particularly the MR-16) in place of the old automotive-type 12v lamps. Still a good overview of both 120v and 12v systems and the price can't be beat. I've given dozens of copies away to clients over the years. Deserves an update. Ortho, are you listening?

4 out of 5 stars How to design and install outdoor lighting........2000-04-13

This book was marvelous! It gave me some great ideas on how to save time and money. I have always wanted to try and install a unique lighting arrangement at the front and the back of my home, but I was very leery about the expense I would incur and the knowledge to "go ahead and try that, any way". I truly think this book is worth every dollar. You will not be disappointed......

    Book Description

Bill Fortney's Great Photography Workshop is a complete how-to guide for the impassioned amateur outdoor photographer-the fastest growing segment of the market. This book is a fresh approach to the age-old desire of serious amateurs to become truly good at their chosen craft. Most books produced over the past two decades have focused either on technical considerations or the esthetics of photography. Few have integrated both important issues into one volume, and none has presented an actual course of action to help readers develop excellence at their craft. Bill Fortney's Great Photography Workshop contains actual self-assignments and field exercises to help the reader become fluent with each of the major concepts. In addition, the book addresses the emotional stumbling blocks to the learning process. A portfolio section includes work samples from serious amateurs who have followed the author's course to arrive at professional skill levels. Finally, the book contains a full bibliography of other source materials.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars could be a lot better.......2005-07-29

ordered this book from local library and glad i did not pay for it. although mr. fortney chose all the right chapter headings, their honestly is not a lot of technical information in this book. a beginner would get no information of value in really learning photography; an intermediate photographer might get some help from the "exercises'; if you are beyond these levels do not buy this book! you already know much more than is offered. although there are a few good photos, many of them have already been done (much better i might add), by other renowned photographers. i'm sorry but the digital examples are-well-bad. if you really want to learn nature or landscape photography don't bother with this-get ANY of john shaws books-they WILL make you a better photographer. also for sheer inspiration check out art wolfe. too many of the photos in this book are plagiarized from others works-see for yourself...check out the original work of the people he mentions on p184...

    3 out of 5 stars What "workshop?".......2004-06-13

This is an average book similar to so many photography books that give you an introduction to/overview of landscape/outdoor/nature/whatever photography. Nothing in this book sets it apart from the crowd. The "workshop" part is almost non-existent -- just a few brief, vague "self assignments" at the end of each chapter.

3 out of 5 stars Could be better.......2003-11-18

If you have the chance to read the introductory pages or if you will read the recommendations from other readers - for sure you will get excited about this book. And you will feel proud for your choice in buying it:-)) For sure Bill Fortney is a good manager for the business he runs (including good knowledge of promoting his book), he may be a good professional photographer but this book could be better. Interestening details are extremely poor or just mentioned in hurry. This is why I believe beginners could find much better books and advanced amateurs either. Try "John Shaw's Nature Photography Field Guide" and you will have a *****book!

5 out of 5 stars Makes you excited about photography.......2003-09-09

A short flip through the pages of this book and it soon becomes obvious that Bill Fortney is undoubtedly a master photographer. Inside "Bill Fortney's Great Photography Workshop" you will find page after page of sound photographic advice complete with illustrations and examples. While it is a technical presentation in many aspects, he also clearly shows that great photography is every bit as much an art form as it is a technical knowledge. Besides discussions of such things as shutter speed and aperture and how they affect the picture he delves into the importance of the right light, composition, seeing with an artistic eye, and using filters (especially the effect of a good polarizing filter). If you like photography you will leave the book excited about the possibilities before you as you apply what you have learned. This is a highly recommended read for any photography enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars Take a SIP, Stunning, Inspirational, Photography!!.......2003-07-18

Excellent, well written. This is definitely a photo course in book form. From the inclusion of amateurs' work to the use of a pleasently large font this book does exactly what it sets out to do- improve your photography. The self assignments (of which I have already done some and do without realising it) , which are easy to do are instructive and provide immediate feedback in many cases. The tone of the book is straightforward, informative, humorous and down to earth, a rarity. At the worst the pictures will inspire to get up and go shooting, at the best after trying the assignments and treating it like the text it is, your photography should improve.

3 out of 5 stars For beginners, not advanced amateurs and professionals.......2004-06-13

The sub-title of the book says "Techniques for the Advanced Amateur and Professional." Hardly. This is simply one of many generalist photography books geared to beginners and "non-advanced" amateurs. Don't expect to find anything that isn't in dozens of similar books. The photos are average, and aren't helped by the lacklustre quality of the printing.

    5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2003-11-26

Great book that teaches a lot about "outdoor photography". Equipment, interesting technigues, locations, and many other topics are explained with many examples. I am mostly interested in landscape photography and found many advices very usefull. Highly recomended.

5 out of 5 stars Great book - very helpful.......2003-01-13

This is the most helpful photo book I have ever seen! The illustrations are superb, with helpful captions. Moreover, it's good for beginning levels despite what the subtitle says. I highly recommend it. Worth every penny. Also a great gift for other photographer friends.

3 out of 5 stars More winning pictures needed.......2002-12-01

This book is essentially true to its title of the Art of Outdoor Photography as opposed to the science of... The author offers a lucid and accessible narrative which could generate insight for beginner or intermediate photographers. However, I felt that many of the pictures in the book were quite frankly not impressive or inspiring. It is almost as if he was only willing to part with those that he didn't want to sell elsewhere. Could be useful as part of a larger collection of books on this subject but look elsewhere for stunning photographs.

    5 out of 5 stars WOW!! What a book!.......2002-09-01

Absolutely amazing!! This is one of the BEST photography books out there. I have bought many books on photography, but this one has absolutely captivated me. Have you ever been ever been awestruck by some lovely outdoor scenery, taken pictures of that landscape , got the film developed and printed shook your head in bewilderment and said "what the heck happened?". All the things that captured your heart and soul are still there in the picture, but it does not have the same impact? If this has happened to you, this book will tell you why.

Don't walk, run. Go buy the book!
