Book Description
Gardening can be a political act. Creativity, fulfillment, connection, revolution--it all begins when we get our hands in the dirt. Food Not Lawns combines practical wisdom on ecological design and community-building with a fresh, green perspective on an age-old subject. Activist and urban gardener Heather Flores shares her nine-step permaculture design to help farmsteaders and city dwellers alike build fertile soil, promote biodiversity, and increase natural habitat in their own "paradise gardens." But Food Not Lawns doesn't begin and end in the seed bed. This joyful permaculture lifestyle manual inspires readers to apply the principles of the paradise garden--simplicity, resourcefulness, creativity, mindfulness, and community--to all aspects of life. Plant "guerilla gardens" in barren intersections and medians; organize community meals; start a street theater troupe or host a local art swap; free your kitchen from refrigeration and enjoy truly fresh, nourishing foods from your own plot of land; work with children to create garden play spaces. Flores cares passionately about the damaged state of our environment and the ills of our throwaway society. In Food Not Lawns, she shows us how to reclaim the earth one garden at a time.

An inspired 40-something.......2007-09-04
Food Not Lawns speaks to my heart and has inspired me in my home gardening. I bought copies for two dear gardening friends who are in their 20's and 30's, and they are also excited by the ideas presented in the book. The author takes a holistic view of community and gardening, of working with Nature as an orchestra of forces influencing each other and working collectively together. Heather Flores encourages us to think out of the box and some might find that uncomfortable, but I still think her vision and sense of hope is so needed in our world today. Share this book with family and friends!
completely false advertising.......2007-07-05
I see that this books appears a hit with many reviewers, but I am unfortunately going to dissent. I was excited to read this book when it arrived and was subsequently dissappointed in the overall quality of the work as a whole. First and foremost, Flores leaves out a great deal of detail with regard to the actual work involved in any form of agriculture, be it animal husbandry, permaculture, or anything between. I say this not only as an avid reader, but also an environmental studies major reviewing the work for a class as well. Second, Flores' method of combining the topics of agriculture and social change is facetious at best, with no real segway from the former to the latter. In other words, this is literally two unconnected books sharing the same binding. Finally, and most disheartening of all, the work gives faulty advice at best, especially with regard to her advice on dealing with numerous aspects of gardening (traditional and permaculture), pending jail time, and conflict management strategies(with latter are potentially dangerous). I will also note that I resold this book immediately upon completion due to the above. Those interested would be better served to read The Good Life by Helen and Scott Nearing, or other such related books by other reputable authors such as Joseph Jenkins, Eliot Coleman, Louise Riotte, or John and Martha Storey. In short, do not purchase this book if you are serious about either agriculture or social change.
if you are over 40 skip it... so gen X.......2007-05-25
This is a very shallow book by the new generation of writers that find fault with everything done in the twenty years before they were born,
Its very shallow, big type and very preachy.
If you are interested in gardening, try Giaas garden, a much more serious study of permiculture.
In this rambling book, the aurthor boasts of not making over 8 k a year, but inherited the money to buy her farm!
I liked camping living until I was thirty, now I am 45 and really like my freezer and new stove.( yes, I have my own three hens and belong to a CSA)
I know a number of the original flower/farm people, and as they got older they liked having a few more comforts.
So this is one of the new gen X books, shallow to a fault. Nothing but sound bites.
the aurthor sems all hyped about third world living, but I am not sure she has ever been to a third world and seen how hard that style of life is,,it is easy to glamorius the distant!!!
Not just Gardening--A guide to Activism and Environmentalism.......2007-01-23
I picked up this book to learn practical application of permacultural principles applied to urban yard scales--and there is a wealth of such information here. However, I do feel like Flores preaches just a little too much about the environmental destruction and political problems currently plaguing our country. In my view, anyone picking up a book called Food Not Lawns probably is already well-versed in such issues, and Flores is essentially preaching to the converted. That said, this book DOES have tons of practical information, and I would recommend it as an excellent counterbalance and companion book to Toby Hemenway's Gaia's Garden.
Keys to change any reader can use........2006-12-14
For activist readers who believe activism is a political pursuit, FOOD NOT LAWNS: HOW TO TURN YOUR YARD INTO A GARDEN AND YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD INTO A COMMUNITY offers a different viewpoint, maintaining that growing food where you live is a key method of becoming a food activist in the community. Chapters advocate planting home and community gardens with an eye to drawing important connections between the politics of a home or community garden and the wider politics of usage, consumption, and sustainability. Another rarity: chapters promote small, easy changes in lifestyles to achieve a transition between personal choice and political activism at the community level, providing keys to change any reader can use.

Must have book when renovating.......2006-07-02
This is a wonderful book, the author assists you with questions to ask yourself, and gives you many options. A book you will use again and again when considering window treatments. I bought another book, 1001 and one ideas for windows, and it didn't compare at all to this book.
The world's leading window decorating authority.......2006-03-22
An inspiring guide to window coverings featuring more than 600 photographs, Dream Windows, Historical Perspectives, Classic Designs, Contemporary Creations by Kathleen Stoehr is both unique and complete in its scope of window decorating ideas. Covering chapters such as shutters, curtains & draperies, combination treatments, shades and more, Stoehr shows the latest styles and colors for every room in the house. But that's not all: each chapter also touches on historical perspectives, facts about the products (such as advantages and disadvantages) cost, lifespan, care and cleaning, and most appropriate locations in the home.
"Good to Know" sidebars cover the intricacies of each products--such as a short discussion of wood versus faux wood products, types of fabrics, the differences between top treatments and more. A "Question Yourself" chapter will help you evaluate various aspects of window treatments (among them, qualities needed, time frame, design style) in order to make a thoughtful decision for your home.
The topic of motorization, as well as hiring an interior designer is addressed and a thorough glossary will help you with potentially unfamiliar terminology. But best of all is the glorious photography, provided from top interior designers and window treatment companies throughout the United States and abroad. Whether looking for designer window treatments or something out of the ordinary, you will find it in this complete guide to soft and hard window treatments.

Customer Reviews:
Informative and visually stunning.......2006-02-04
The photos in this book are enough to attract any aspiring homeowner to read through this wonderful book about remodeling.
Tastefully done, and covering all angles of remodeling, I found this book very informative as well. It covers additions, interior improvements, facelifts, curb appeal, enhancing your space, and much more; and all sections are aided by beautiful, breathtaking photos that will surely make you dream of having something similar to wake up to every day. It inspired me to go through my house, room by room, and reassessing everything.
Well done!
A good buy for everyone.......2002-12-14
I'm not planning on remodeling my home in the near future, but after looking through this book, I had to buy it. The information is useful to both people who are and who are not planning on remodeling.
Benefits for those who are going to remodel:
This book is jammed backed with information! It shows you how to evaluate your house and neighborhood before you remodel, how to "finesse" a floorplan and what is involved with remodeling (e.g. the section on working with contractors), it discusses potential problems and pitfalls to avoid when remodeling, it has case studies (the problem, "the program," the cure), it has information on both interior and exterior remodeling with special sections on bathrooms and kitchens. It discusses different materials and many different types of changes you can make to your house.
Benefits for both interior design junkies and those who are just starting out:
This book is a good primer on both interior and exterior design. It cotains general information on house types and exterior color combinations. This book has a section on how to enhance existing interior space, and the pictures throughout the book can be used as inspiration for redecorating projects, in addition to remodeling projects.
Minuses: There is only one interior style represented here, a mix of traditional and country. The exteriors are primarily arts & crafts and traditional styles. I'm sure the style was created to appeal to the broadest range of people, which is a plus for the publishers, but a drawback to those who have a more individual style. However, I think that the information on remodeling can be applied to many styles.
Recommendation:
I would recommend this book to anyone!
remodeling project basics plus allowance for "youness".......2000-05-29
Lots of "need-to-know" information about basics of structural remodeling and personality remodeling for each and every room / each and every nook and cranny of your home. Ideas given are able to be adapted to your own style, desires or needs. Lots of GREAT pictures add much to what this book is all about! 1

Customer Reviews:
Not many stories.......2007-07-13
I bought this for my six year old son who has difficulty handling frustration, and sometimes has a hard time getting to sleep. He absolutely LOVES the stories on the cd, the only problem is there are only two stories. The rest of the cd talks about ways to cope with negative feelings, which were mentioned in the previous stories, and then there are a few tracks of music. My son ends up listening to only 1/4 of the cd. The stories are entertaining, but he's missing out on learning the strategies. What should have been done was to incorporate more of the instruction of the coping strategies within the body of the stories. I may eventually buy the other cd's because the stories help to keep him in bed and feeling content, but I cringe at the idea of paying money, to then use only a portion of what I paid for.
A great tool for kids really anyone still working out juvenile stuff!.......2007-05-14
I originally bought for my daughter who has some anxiety and anger issues. After listening to the CD she was practicing some of the techniques and understanding their values, I listened to the CD myself this morning and I can see why she was so positive about it! Also there is the "Light Shield" technique in which children learn to imagine an inner light shield to protect themselves from external situations where others may be making them uncomfortable emotionally. This has also help her to deal with 2 deaths close to her in our family!
Doctor recommended.......2007-03-13
My eleven year old son's ADHD Doctor recommended Lori Lite's relaxation techniques to help my son relax so he could sleep. I purchased the book A Boy and A Bear as well as the Indigo Dreams: Relaxation and Stress Management Bedtime Stories and Indigo Dreams: Garden of Wellness Stories and Techniques Designed to Decrease Bullying, Anger, Anxiety & Obesity, While Promoting Self-esteem & Healthy... CDs. Of the three products I purchased the Garden of Wellness is the CD my son picks to listen to every night. It is his favorite.
Many nights my son would still be awake at midnight distraught that he could not get to sleep, because he was unable to quiet his mind and body. The last two weeks I have seen a change in my son for the positive. He has yet to hear the end of the CD because he is asleep before the CD ends. His anger has diminished; his dread of going to school has diminished; his self-consciousness of being different has also diminished. The Garden of Wellness CD has truly helped my son on many levels of his life and I am truly grateful to Lori Lite.
I must also add the CDs have been very beneficial for me also and the children I work with on a daily bases. The two CDs and the book have helped all our lives become much more peaceful!
Bubble blowing .......2007-03-07
My 8 year old daughter loves the story entitled The Perfect Club and the bubble blowing practice session on this CD. . She said it helps her go to sleep and not be scared when she wakes up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. She says that it takes away all her bad dreams. She also feels relaxed and safe while listening to the music soundtrack. We have been using the original Indigo Dreams CD for years. My daughter treats it like gold. She exercises much caution so as not to scratch it when using her CD player for other things during the day! We are thrilled to add this CD to our collection. I can't wait til Lite Books makes other products. My daughters days were literally happier 4 years ago after ordering the first CD. I don't know if it is b/c she got more sleep or more relaxed sleep b/c the stories have coping strategies to practice and I leave it on repeat so that it plays all night long. I realized that I love things like "the Secret" a best seller right now so why not something like this for kids and it is here thru Lite Books. [...]
My husband makes fun, but my daughter loves them!.......2006-12-19
My 9 year old daughter has a difficult time with seperating from us and with transitions. Bedtime can be a trying time as she gets overtired, but wound up at the same time. We started listening to the first cd about two years ago and quickly added Ocean of Dreams (which was her favorite). I just bought Garden of Wellness and she was so happy! I prefer the voice on Ocean of Dreams (and my husband makes fun of all of the CD's), but since they work for my daughter, who cares what we think?! She willing turns out the light and lies down and when we peek in she is sound asleep. She had problems being bullied last year, so we are interested in seeing if this is helpful. She is very thin, so I hope the message about eating healthy food and staying fit will be the right one since she does not need to lose weight. She is asking me for the teen one now, too.

This was a cover to cover read in one sitting. Was very informative in most ways. But I was looking for more detail.I have been into model railroading a LONG time. But new to Garden RailRoads.
A Model Railroader Looks at Garden Railroading.......2005-09-01
This is the most organized and comprehensive single text on Garden Railroading that is currently in print. If my figures are correct, it is also the best-selling book on the subject. You will certainly save the cost of this book many times over as you use its guidelines to make effective planning and purchasing decisions.

Book Description
Timber Press has previously published two critically acclaimed and bestselling books by Piet Oudolf, the influential Dutch landscape designer: Gardening with Grasses (with Michael King) and Designing with Plants (with Noël Kingsbury). This new collaboration with fellow Dutch plantsman Henk Gerritsen deals with a selection of some 1200 plants most suitable for Oudolf's New Wave naturalism, which emphasizes the importance of plant structures in providing all-season interest. The gardener can prune back plants after flowering to create a perpetual spring — at least until the onset of winter — but the authors prefer to follow nature's example and let plants finish flowering, not only to please the birds and butterflies, but for the beauty that well-chosen plant groupings offer as they reach the end of their life cycle. Many illustrations in this book demonstrate the striking effects of Oudolf's favorite plants in fall and winter.
Customer Reviews:
Good Book!.......2002-03-04
Dream Plants is a great book. The authers are upfront, the plants they critique are ones they have grown. While I might not agree with some of they're descriptions, I as a gardener realize that I have my own little piece of earth and they have theirs. I found it wonderful. The pictures, the layout, the descriptions, and yes, the I don't agree.
A beautiful book, a guide worthy of owning and studying..........2001-10-20
This volume, taken together with Oudolf's "Designing With Plants" -- an invaluable companion -- gives the gardener an inspiring and comprehensive approach to stylish landscape design and plant selection. Taken by itself, "Dream Plants" is a not necessarily helpful guide. It's hard to make sense of it as different from any other plant selection book, as it has no context. But in consort with "Designing With Plants," the design context comes clear: one has both the key and the lock in one place -- the design guide, and the plant selection menu. With both in hand -- and the photographs are lush and suggestive, and the plans bold and clearly illuminated -- there remains plenty of obscurity throughout. But there are not many mistakes here of continuity, and so one has confidence that it is as full and reliable a depiction of natural, early 21st century garden and landscape design principles and practice one can get between two covers.
Contrast this with the dreary corporate planting schemes of van Sweeden and Oehme -- not an inspiration anywhere in their so-called "Bold Romantic Gardens". With Oudolf, the reader discovers as much about the the secrets of his design pallet as can be revealed without actually having him standing over your shoulder. This book is full of mystery, which is as it should be, with detailed clues and hints in the variety of plants discussed in detail, the photographs of combinations that demonstrate his views on plant structure, appearance and sequencing, and the useful back-and-forth between the principles of garden design he favors, and the selection of plants he uses to bring it to life.
I would not purchase "Dream Plants" without also purchasing "Designing With Plants." Together, they are a fabulous combination.
You need to know plants to benefit from this book.......2001-02-12
Dutchmen Gerritsen and Oudolf label Boltonia a "troublesome, demanding plant." The same with our common wildflower Monkshood. They say that Knipofia won't survive winter. Lobelia hybrids are "only for people with green fingers." "Tierella wherryi is quite reliable when you look after it properly..." All of these plants are favorites in US gardens.
And the crowning insult to American readers -- Echniacea (Purple Coneflower) is labeled "troublesome." This is one of the most popular perennials in the US!
While I appreciate the design ideas of Oudolf's earlier books, this one is a bust as far as plant advice for US readers goes -- and the plant descriptions take up most of the book.
Dream Book for Earthbound Gardeners.......2000-11-13
In concert with Piet Oudolf's previous two books on ornamental grasses and on design, Dream Plants for the Natural Garden expands the vision of an already exceptional garden personality. As a dutch designer and nurseryman, Oudolf offers us his emperical advice about hardy plant selection from an earthbound perspective. Paired here with his fellow garden designer, Henk Gerritsen, Oudolf makes a bold case for the natural style advocated by an international group of landscapers. Instead of conventional groupings by color, Oudolf and Gerritsen communicate both their aesthetic and practical choices here under the headings of "Tough," "Playful," and "Troublesome." They espouse plants that grow easily without pesticides & fertilizers while providing year-round beauty. Oudolf has been renowned for his masterful use of perennials as players in gardens of four-season interest. This volume describes 1200 plants he and Gerritsen have chosen on the basis of behavior, strengths and usage. The combined results of their long experience, provide us with details hard to find in one place before now. Many of these plants are cutting edge (especially in the US) and thus, not widely written about in popular horticultural literature. As everywhere, the Netherlands have their own climatic conditions; thus, gardeners from other countries will need to extrapolate a bit. Luckily, the authors provide enough information on zone, soil and sun conditions to make this possible. The photographs maintain the high-quality of previous Oudolf books. However, since plant descriptions outnumber pictures, it helps to have some familiarity with the specific genera and species mentioned. The clean presentation of format, text and illustration make this eminently readable. As a landscape professional, I cannot more enthusiastically recommend such a distinct and useful publication.

I'm a Picture Person.......2000-05-07
Well, I am totally a picture person, and I found this book to be astonishing, I loved almost every pool I saw, there was some gardening pictures, but not that many, but i was personally looking for pools, that's probably why they titled it "POOLS and gardens". But if you love pictures and seeing other people's interpretations of beautiful scenery and living dreams, then i assure you that you will love this book!
Fascinating surreal images coupled with lack of substance.......2000-03-19
Dream Pools and Gardens does not supply any intelligible narrative and merely bombards the mind with image after image of mind-boggling pools. Was that the book's original purpose and goal? I certainly hope so.
Disappointing.......1999-07-22
I eagerly awaited the arrival of this book. Unfortunately, I found it to have little garden information, pictures which lacked good perspective and a narrative which was weakly written and included only sketchy details. "Reflections on Pools" is a much better book.
