Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.
Book Description
In one engagingly written, frankly opinionated, lavishly illustrated volume, America's leading authority on roses reveals everything the gardener needs to know about the most popular of all garden plants: from how to grow and maintain them to critical information for the most experienced gardener on such essentials as harvesting, propagating, grafting, and breeding new varieties.
Customer Reviews:
Coffe table book.......2006-11-05
Even if you aren't into roses this is a good book to brouse through. He does concentrate on his favorites making them sound like they are the best. The thing to keep in mind with this book is that most of the modern roses will do well in his area as he says they do. However the best chapter in the book is the part on how to grow. He does give detailed type of information generously, plus pictures to show you how to do it which is a big plus. I haven't found clear photos like his in most rose books.
Did They Say Rose Bible?.......2006-09-11
It would take volumes to cover the multitudes of roses that are out there, but, with a name like "The Rose Bible" I expected more than this book delivered.
It's not a bad book, it just doesn't live up to it's name. The roses listed are common, the type you can find information on anywhere. ( Try: [...])
There is nothing new in this book.
If you're new to roses The Rose Bible will open your eyes to a whole new world that exists beyond the Hybrid Tea rose and it gives very good information about selecting, growing and pruning roses.
As an experienced rosarian whose looking for more in depth or obscure rose information, The Rose Bible doesn't have it.
Beautiful book.......2005-01-18
I am an avid gardner and appreciate a book that tantalizes me with new ideas for my garden. Although I already have some 18 roses in my garden, this book has inspired me to create even more space for more roses, and collect some amazing bourbons and antiques that are out there. I originally purchased this book to research new climbers, and found that and more! The photos are captivating, and the author provides a great history on the various species. In addition, I feel like the author does an outstanding job of explaining the positives and negatives of roses he highlights. I have reread the chapter on "Fifty Immortal Roses" numerous times, and can't seem to put this book down. I can't wait to start digging in the dirt. Very inspirational!
Great for the beginner.......2003-08-27
Make no bones about it, this book is about roses the author enjoys. This is not a bad thing. He gives you a good concise history on roses, introducing you to the various types of roses grown through time. He gives great advise on planting, pruning and maintenance over the year. Then there are the pictures- lots of them, and beautifully photographed. Yes there is a whole chapter on his favorite roses (many of them tried and true) but hundreds more are referred to with photos and text. This is an ejoyable book, fun to flip through, but still has the information a beginner needs to know when choosing roses.
I am glued to this book! Help!.......2001-11-16
"The Rose Bible" is the best and most helpful book on roses I've ever browsed or read. The pictures are magnificient, the language is informative, honest, and humorous, and the history of roses is explained very well. There is a slight bias towards cutting as opposed to garden roses in the top fifty list, but the contents and organization are nearly flawless. No potpourri tips here! If you want to know where roses came from, what is available now (with strong and weak points for each), how to buy, feed, prune, protect roses, and if you don't mind drooling over hundreds of rose pictures in the most undignified fashion, this is the book you want.
Book Description
Americans love flowers. We grow them with a passion and crave helpful advice on nurturing them in our gardens. A great, friendly, indispensable book, THE FLOWER GARDENER'S BIBLE is written with wit and authority by Lewis and Nancy Hill, who share both their joy in growing flowers and more than 75 years of combined experience.
This new primer is both painstakingly thorough and stunningly photographed. It covers every facet of growing perennials, annuals, bulbs, wildflowers, small trees, vines, and shrubs for season-long color and beauty. It is organized in three sections, and the first focuses on the basics - choosing the right varieties for your zone and type of garden, and planning and planting for maximum impact. The second section presents plans for 25 distinctively themed gardens. And finally, a photographic encyclopedia of more than 400 species includes detailed descriptions of each plant - garden uses, susceptibility to pests and diseases, propagation methods, and more. THE FLOWER GARDENER'S BIBLE is illustrated throughout with more than 500 full-color photographs that are joyously informal, and charming in their simplicity. Dozens of charts group plants by bloom time, height, color, affinity to shade, specific soil and sun needs, appeal to birds and butterflies, and more. THE FLOWER GARDENER'S BIBLE takes every reader - at any level of interest and expertise - and offers the one thing guaranteed to increase his or her pleasure in flower gardening - knowledge.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic book.......2005-11-18
I would highly recommend this book for the beginner through advanced. Alot of information to reference back to.
The only thing I found in Rodales Perennials for Every Purpose that I like better- is the book is setup "Plants for every season". It has the contents list in order of blooming time. ie.. Early Spring, late spring early summer, etc
Gardeners Bible- has alot of great pics, deals alot with bulbs, cuttings, transplanting. saving seeds, planting- more so than Rodales Perennials.
Conclusion: It would be tough to decide which one I like better, I think I will have to keep them both.

St. Martha Parish-Wide Bulletin Book Club December Selection.......2001-12-02
The monks of the middle ages can be heard singing Ave Maria, Ave Maria from the glossy, A. Joseph Barrish, S. M. illustrated pages of the St. Martha Parish-Wide Bulletin Book Club December Selection. Barrish, working with Schoenstatt Sister of Mary, M. Jean Frisk, has created a brilliant reminiscence of the time of incense and flowers in the Roman Catholic Church. Frisk, who holds a masters in Theology with Marian Concentration and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology, gives us legends and meditations to ponder as we look at Barrish's stunning, full-page illustrations of dozens of flowers that bear a name or a mythical relationship to the Mother of Christ.
This selection leads us through our shared Christian spirituality in the natural beauty around us through a history of flower legends and names using flowers of the Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, Presentation, Flight into Egypt, Maternity of Mary, Mary as Homemaker, Mary at the Cross, and Devotion Rewarded.
Among the legends told in mystery plays of the medieval times is that of Madelon who having nothing to give the Babe Jesus was led by the Angel Gabriel to roses blooming at the girl's feet. "The French poet, Emile Blemont, ended his story of Madelon with this quotation: Though thou art poor and hast no gold to bring, Though ice-bound earth no Heaven-sent flowers bestows, Yet give thy heart this Noel to thy King. This is the Legend of the Christmas Rose." (p. 48)
In addition to an excellent appendix, index, and bibliography of gardens and plant listings, this book also is a personal Mary Garden planner. Just in time for Chistmas gift exchanges to allow you to give more knowledge of Faith in a vibrant, beautiful, and interesting way. This quality publication gives artistically, as Christian art has, to those who enjoy studying the nobility of the world around them, as well as to those who plant gardens! (St. Martha, Okemos, Michigan Foundations in Adult Education, Fr. Jon Wehrle, Pastor)

A must book for gardeners in need of inspiration.......2000-03-01
An inspiring book for gardeners who til their soil this spring. I plan to replant a section of my garden because of this book. I will devote this land to Mary and St. Francis...
Calming, inspiring, can't wait for spring.......2000-02-03
Mary's Flowers was a keeper from the time I opened the box. The cover drew me to the book, and as I skipped through the pages I knew for once in my life I had to begin on page one and continue.........not my usual way......I begin in the back........the drawings are magnificent, the stories fascinating and the relativity between the flowers and the Blessed Virgin truly inspiring. The book is one of the highlights of my collection. I only wish I had written it.... JoKay Miltenberger Arcanum OH

A Gorgeous Meditative Tribute.......2000-01-15
Beautifully written and illustrated, this book inspired me to plan my own garden with some of the flowers it mentions. The botanical watercolors are practically a garden in themselves! A great resource for gardeners.
Book Description
“Are you acquainted with Tolstoy’s The Gospel in Brief? At its time, this book virtually kept me alive. . . . If you are not acquainted with it, then you cannot imagine what an effect it can have upon a person.”—Ludwig Wittgenstein, in a letter to Ludwig von Ficker.
The Gospel in Brief is Leo Tolstoy’s integration of the four biblical Gospels into a single account of the life of Jesus. Inspired in large measure by Tolstoy’s meticulous study of the original Greek versions of the Bible, The Gospel in Brief is a highly original fusion of biblical texts and Tolstoy’s own influential religious views.
Tolstoy explains that his goal is a solution to “the problem of life,” not an answer to theological or historical questions. As a result, he sets aside such issues as Jesus’ genealogy and divinity, or whether Jesus in fact walked on water. Instead, he focuses on the words and teachings of Jesus, stripped of what Tolstoy regarded as the Church’s distortions and focus on dogma and ritual. The result is a work that emphasizes the individual’s spiritual condition in a chaotic and indifferent world.
Like Tolstoy’s celebrated literary achievements, The Gospel in Brief has the distinct bearing of a classic: in its urgency and directness it is remarkably current, as if it were written only yesterday rather than a century ago.
Customer Reviews:
A Revolutionary Book.......2006-07-14
Tolstoy's inspiring translation of the Gospels focuses on the problem of life while detailing Christ's instructions to man concerning the question of how we are to live. This work is revolutionary in the context that it summarizes all of Christ's instructions into 5 simple commands, all of which can be obeyed through one direct command: to love one another even as Christ has loved us.
In reading this book, I would recommend reading the body of the text before reading the introduction. As the text is potentially paradigm shifting for the reader, it is best to approach it with an open mind. Tolstoy's introduction, I have found, can be best appreciated after reading the text of the Gospel in Brief.
I would encourage everyone, Christian and non-Christian, to read this book to attain a clearer understanding of the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Beautiful Interpretation of the Gospels.......2006-04-12
I am, admittedly, a Tolstoy fan already, so I read this with a positive bias, but, that aside, this was one of the most powerful books I have read. I have always felt uncomfortable reading the New Testament because I can tell that liberties have been taken with the translation (just compare two versions) and I always think about all the people who have worked on it since its beginning. Tolstoy takes this into account and produces a condensed version that expresses the most important part of the NT: Christ's message. We are lucky enough to be the readers of a work that was written by a brilliant religous scholar. This is highly readable and simple, but at the same time, powerful and life changing. For people who are striving to be true Christian's in the way Christ intended without the murky trappings of organized churches, this is the interpretation of the New Testament to treasure.
My Father is not flesh, but spirit........2001-09-05
I have always felt that much of the Bible and the Church was hiding the heart of Christ's message. The Bible seems a tool that the Church arbitrarily canonized to use for justification; eerily much like the teachers of law that Christ came to nullify.
Tolstoy goes to the original Greek texts and renders a striking and illuminating account of Christ's message from the four gospels. He purposely does not delve into Christ's miracles or divinity. Why?
Well, Christ himself was more concerned that people understand his message of how to live one's life in the spirit than to worship him because of his divine acts. Religion is dead if it is not lived continually. Tolstoy dared to explain with clarity how to live Christ's message. It is harrowing if you understand what is asked of you.
"...small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." -Matthew 7:24
I know why this was said now and is rarely emphasized in churches. Read this book if you want to change and are open to the idea that Christianity has been severely perverted.
A powerful book.... for those who like it...........2000-09-25
This is the kind of book either you like or you hate.
Three kinds of people will read this book. The first (and most moderate) will be Tolstoy scholars, etc. interested in his religious beliefs and influences, and there readings of this book will be value-empty and hygenic. The second group of people will be those akin of mind to Tolstoy, and they will love and cherish this book ahead of almost any other: when the philosopher Wittgenstein first read this book he decided that it was spectacular and went off into the countryside to begin to change the world (and failed... leaving Austria to go and study with Russell at Oxford....) The third group will be more traditional Christians-- for whom Jesus' particular authority and the authority of the Church handed down through the Fathers is paramount, and they, generally, will detest this work.....
I love this book. I find it splendidly written, insightful, and clever: I'm of the sort who would toss out the whole of the Bible excluding Ezekiel, Daniel, and James: I want Christ as a man and a social reformer. Unfortunately, Gandhi and Christ were not usually considered one in the same. For people like me, this book is a must-read and almost guaranteed as a world-changing event.
For more traditional Christians, this book is probably better left forgotten. It's going to be objectionable and even with his style being beautiful, there are better things to be read....
Just the Facts.......2000-03-21
Tolstoi, one of the five best novelists of all time, in any language, was born into a rich and powerful family (second only to the Tsar) and loved wine, women and song; was married and had fourteen children. In short he was a superstar! And suicidal, depressed and lonely until he learned to live like a Christian instead of living like his church would have him live. He leaves the "churches" contributions out of the Gospels and leaves Christ in (for which he was proudly excommunicated). If you have rejected Christ because of the hyprocisy of the church and the people who run it - get this book and get a life.

Flowers Of The Bible: And How to Grow Them
ASIN: 0517704129
Release Date: 1996-03-19 |
Book Description
In her fifth collection of poems Mary Kinzie continues to extend her formal reach, drawing out her lines with a quiet daring that reveals an elegiac thread in the most conversational cadences (a good example is her long poem "Cilantro," about erotic attraction). And while continuing to explore complex forms (quatrain, sonnet, ode, sestina) and to find her voice in syllabics, alcaics, and varieties of free verse, she also tries to bring unaccustomed subject matter into her ken. To call her themes merely "domestic" or "personal" is to fall short of the sense of elation and dread with which even the gentlest act of attention is performed. Kinzie is only "domestic" in the way Emily Dickinson is, and "personal" with the same severity toward confession that marks the poetry of Louise Bogan -- both writers of the sharp, condensed image, to whom she has been compared. But unlike them she is also engaged by expansive periods and interwoven sentences in the fashion of meditative poets from Horace to Stevens. Like her previous book, Autumn Eros, this new volume (including the long and substantial title poem) is distinguished by many moving poems about her daughter, written with the full understanding that the gift of this radiant being makes the mother vulnerable in a way she had never been -- a d also, for better or worse, more irrevocably connected to the world.
"Mary Kinzie's new book of poems, Ghost Ship, like all her work, in poetry and in criticism, is characterized by its moral intensity and rigor. Her seriousness is perpetually adventurous. Her adventurousness shows itself in the constantly surprising angles from which she sees things and in the extraordinarily wide variety of successful formal experimentation in her poems."

Quilting Flowers of the Bible.......2007-06-03
Patterns are great and quite different. Explanations are interesting. The projects are done as individual blocks, which is nice. If you want to combine them into a larger project, you have that option as well. I recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:
In Memory of Joshua Gittens McPherson.......2001-08-20
When I fist read this book I was only 9. Having been taught to read by my great grandfather, who embodied education. This was one of his favourite books. I found it very sad and at times depressing however, it teaches one that goodness always prevails even in the shadows of death. One learns courage and the depths of love that one can have for their family. This is a book that I will forever share with my great grandfather even though he has left this earth 13 years ago. I could still smell the old hard cover text with the neat engraving on a small basket of flowers. ( I had a very old version). It's a book that I will always cherish.
Excellent story about a girl who was unjustly accused!.......2000-10-13
This is the touching story of a young girl and her father. Originally written by a french author, and later translated into english, this is a book that is sure to be passed down from generation to generation. I am 12 years old and my mother just recently purchased this book for me. I wish every girl could have a copy of this book!
Also recommended: The Elsie Dinsmore Series, any books by Martha Finley, any books by Oliver Optic, C.H. Pearson, or Horatio Alger Jr.
Please, if you want your daughter to read wholesome, enjoyable, thought-provoking, and character building books I suggest you purchase A Basket of Flowers immediately!
