5 out of 5 stars The only book you need!.......2007-09-10

This book teaches that even if you are not the next Amazon, ebay, or Google, you can still make a million on the internet. You just need to find a niche that is underserved.

I purchased "Starting an Online Business for Dummies" and the reviews were mixed. In someone's reviews, they mentioned this book and said it was much better. They suggested buying this book instead of the Dummies book. I took the advice, and am glad I did!

The book is great because it helps you understand that you don't need to be a billion dollar business to start with. Even small, underserved niche markets can earn a million.

I highly recommend this book if you are considering an ebusiness. It is well worth the money. I have been talking about this book to many people who have asked to borrow the book. I keep telling them to pick up their own copy because I am still using it as a reference! It is a great book!

1 out of 5 stars Do no give your money to this Author.......2007-09-08

If you already know what a "blog" is and you're fully proficient in searching the internet with google or yahoo, you're probably too sophisticated for this book. Fox's target are people with very little education (He introduces us at one point to the fancy MBA word, "business plan"). Fox also uses the website he started for his wife and mother as case studies. I guess I should have known better. After all, it is called 'Internet Riches" and has a picture of some guy driving in a brand new convertible on the cover.

I just received this book in the mail and was so excited that I did a quick scan to see what I could "put together" NOW! There were so many fun things to do in this book. Very inventive. I love the way Gurstelle gives praise to the past by creating a steam cannon designed by DaVinci (which was inspired by Archimedes). I can't wait to build even more!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great as reference or tutorial.......2007-10-04

I don't buy many woodworking books because most, especially the ones sold by home centers, aren't very good. They lack detail, they're incomplete, and I often get the feeling that they're just cranked out without much thought. But this one caught my eye in a local bookstore and I'm glad I bought it.

First of all, the book can be used either as a reference or as a complete primer on woodworking. There's lots of information there, but not so much that you get bogged down. At first I just used it to brush up on specific topics, and then I went back to the first page and started reading it straight through. It's well-written; words are used well and not wasted. Photography is superb. Despite the reference to generic "Furniture" in the title, the book is heavily oriented toward cabinets, which it covers in great detail, even to the point of describing how to construct multi-light glass doors.

The first few pages are a little off-putting as the author describes what he considers an appropriate collection of tools and a space to put them in; unfortunately, many woodworking books assume that the reader has acres of space in which to set up a shop. As you read on, though, the text is more friendly toward the hobbyist.

In short, this is a great woodworking reference or tutorial. Don't be put off by the beginning of the book; it gets better. And the Amazon price for this book is much lower than the $40 I paid in the bookstore.

2 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2007-09-24

I found this book very disappointing. The pictures were very pretty but that is pretty much it. The illustrations were confusing and of little use. It gives too much of an overview and no real specifics. I found woodworking for dummies to be a much better book for the beginning woodworker.

5 out of 5 stars The benchmark book on furniture making.......2007-08-05

It is well known that woodworkers have different styles. I think Andy Ray's style will work for majority people trying to learn woodworking. His writing is clear, and he also presents thoughts in logical way. Thus, the book precisely explain why he does this way but not another.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Beginners.......2007-07-05

I purchased this book because I had the interest to learn more about furniture design and building technique. It's very well written, easy to understand and the quality photos help visualize the instructions of the author. It's a great resource to beginners because of the structure of the book. It starts with basic tools and their use, workshop design, and then moves on to basic wood explanations and building techniques. It also gives you ideas on additional readings if you'd like to research a topic in more detail. I would recommend this book to anyone that is interested woodworking by making it a part of your home library.

5 out of 5 stars Great literature for a novice or tradesman.......2007-05-25

This book has plenty to offer anyone. A lot of it was review for me, but it is always good to make sure you don't forget the basics as you move forward in carpentry - it's like trying to attempt calculus without algebra.
I have read this from cover to cover and feel I could read it again to pick up on the little things I missed. It is indeed as it's titled, the "complete" guide. I will say that some basic knowledge will be instrumental for fully grasping and understanding this book, but for the most part, explinations are clear, concise, and simple. There are a few charts in this book that make it very handy and also some very good pointers - some of it is very helpful, but doesnt' seem to be able to adhere to any of my brain cells, so this is one book I like to have close to my shop.
Overall, I'm pleased with this book, and can't wait to read Taunton Press' Complete Illustrated Guide to Joinery, which is referred to in this book from time to time.

5 out of 5 stars Creative Concrete Ornaments for the Garden.......2007-08-25

Super book with detailed information on creation from beginning to end! Super for beginners and seasoned artists.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough, informative and with a gammot of projects.......2007-08-24

I really enjoyed this book. It is detailed and the projects are vastly different from one another. What I also appreciated is the emphasis on doing things right, such as waiting for the concrete to set for 24 days is an example on an item. More emphasis on the internal structure using wire, rebar, etc. I would highly recommend this book and I am anxious to put into use what it taught me.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Projects.......2007-07-03

This a great idea book. Many fun and interesting projects. Directions and supplies needed are well explained.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-04-07

The author is very thorough on this subject and provides extensive desciptions of concrete ornament projects and concrete mixes. The only frustration I had was that in most examples a picture of the completed project was not included until the final chapter. It would have been more helpful after the description of 'how to' make the project. I think most would find this book extremely helpful by taking you from start to finished project.

5 out of 5 stars Cheese Making - Awesome Book!.......2007-09-30

This is a great book for beginning and 'intermediate' home, cheese makers. I would highly recommend having this book in your pantry if you are going to attempt making cheese from home!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent purchase!.......2007-05-15

This book is very detailed yet easy to understand. We have recently purchased cheese making kits for making cheeses at home since where we live, they are quite expensive and not readily available, especially for the goat cheeses in Australia.

THe 1st book we bought was good enough for beginners (if you are afraid of making cheeses, don't. Everything we did came perfectly all right). But this one goes into more details and explanations. So we recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Useful Cookbook.......2007-03-28

This book is easy to follow. It made cheese making simple. I found that the recipes made better cheeses than I could buy.

5 out of 5 stars An extremely informative book.......2007-03-19

This book contains a wealth of information for the beginning cheese maker or for experienced ones for that matter. Great recipes that work. In my opinion, the book is well worth the money I paid for it.

5 out of 5 stars A Standard for Cheese Making.......2007-01-26

I got interested in making cheese after I meet the artisan cheesemaker at a local winery near Herman, Missouri. She told me that she had started in her kitchen and had developed the hobby into a professional culinary skill, after further education in Europe and Israel on the fine art of cheesemaking. She enthusiastically recommended this book, and I received it for Christmas. It is very well written, with logical chapter layout for ingredients, equipment, and techniques, followed by lots of recipes for the different families of cheeses (hard, soft, Italian, etc.) The beginning establishes the cheese makers vocabulary, which is then used throughout the book. A great book for a beginning cheese maker.

Life can be tough for real estate professionals these days. Even with interest rates at historically low levels, the uncertain economy makes homeowners hesitant to relocate or trade up. There just aren't that many clients out there, and the few who exist generate fierce competition. In fact, it seems the single ""hot area"" is foreclosures. But that's not necessarily bad news.

Conti and Finkel's book is a good ""crash course"" for real estate brokers and agents wanting to understand this area and explains the intricacies involved in funding investment deals, using various buying/closing methods and employing exit strategies. Thanks to the book as well as workshops and seminars offered by the two authors, thousands of people each year learn the art of lucrative real estate investing.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful evidence .......2007-05-25

Making Big Money Investing in Foreclosures without cash or credit is a morally courageous examination of real estate investing!! Peter Conti gives powerful evidence of new ways of investing. In this successful oriented book the author minimizes risk taking and explores objective ways towards successful investing. Must read!!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of Foreclosure purchasing.......2006-12-22

I had run across my first pre-forclosure deal and needed to get a basic understanding of the steps and processes. Peter and David's book provided that wonderfully. I was able to use the steps and scripts to sign up a deal, provide help to a stressed-out seller and reach the proper department at the lender. The suggestions of how to talk to both the seller and the lender have been very helpful with dealing with the human side of things. I felt very comfortable with the style and the seller has been very appreciative. I didn't feel manipulative at all.

3 out of 5 stars Making Big Money Investing in Foreclosures: Without Cash or Credit by Peter Conti.......2006-11-09

An official Library Weekly book review.

REVIEW:
This book generically highlights a few ideas on how to invest in
foreclosures and how to finance it without using cash or credit.
Part of the formula is the use of "double closings" which allows
you to simply invest with a minimal amount and use the sell price
as the payment during the title closing. The difficult aspect of
this is it doesn't truly describe certain foreclosure techniques
available in each state (generically applied). Additionally,
you may need to read this with a grain of salt with the current
real estate market conditions.

1 out of 5 stars Another Finkel disaster.......2006-06-28

How to get the most money for your property. This topic, worthy of a book, gets a couple of pages which are platitudes. This is the second book of his I've read recently in which he talks about determining the market price. The approach he advocates will result in a variance with the market of 40%, if not more. And, he lumps apartment buildings in with houses as if they were valued the same way. Of course, they are not.

On the plus side, in this book he recognizes that people do tend to get legal advice before signing a contract. He tells you how to diffuse the lawyer's criticism before it happens.

During my years as an apartment broker, I dealt with more than a few lawyers, including clients. Maybe his approach will work, but I'd think not.

This is another feel-good, cheerleading book. Rich Dad, Poor Dad does a better job of cheerleading, but has even less substance than this lightweight work.

Once again, the author has silly sales techniques that don't work. Once again, let me point you to the best writer in sales: Neil Rackham.

Spare yourself time, money and effort. Pass on everything David Finkel writes or promotes (as I shall hereafter).

2 out of 5 stars Wish they would hire a prof'l editor for all their books........2006-03-27

I own and/or have read their other books and regretfully have to say that their books aren't professionally edited. Their works seem to project an "aw shucks" tone but I find them to contain too much hyperbole.

I don't bother with their new books anymore since the writing is tiresome and predictable. They may have new information to share but that fact is lost because of the book's poor editorial presentation.

According to the Stepfamily Association of America, 60 percent of all families are breaking up, and custody and visitation issues loom large in the lives of many parents. Isolina Ricci's Mom's House, Dad's House guides separated, divorced, and remarried parents through the hassles and confusions of setting up a strong, working relationship with the ex-spouse in order to make two loving homes for the kids. This expanded and revised edition (the book was originally published in 1980) includes emotional and legal tools, as well as many reference materials and resources. As one parent said of the first edition, "This book is my friend."

2 out of 5 stars Unnecessary for divorced parents who already get along.......2007-05-31

My five-year-old daughter's dad and I have joint custody and joint placement. Therefore, my daughter travels between our houses (about 8 blocks apart) every few days. I was hoping this book would help her dad and I make the most of our daughter's situation, but it seems to focus on parents who do not get along. Perhaps, because my daughter does not remember ever having two parents in the same home, this book isn't as relevant to her as it may be for some. The book seemed to focus on picking up the pieces, rather than just growing as a nontraditional family. I will say one positive thing: the book stresses avoiding the use of "ex husband" and "ex wife" and replacing with "my daughter's dad". I feel that makes for a better situation.

2 out of 5 stars Seems biased toward the mother.......2007-05-06

I realize that I have only read a couple chapters so far, but I see an extreme bias that paints the father as the parent that only gets visitation rights and has no interest in his children. This is just my opinion, but every story in the beginning of the book came across this way to me.

Hopefully further reading will offer some advice to something similar to my situation - a father that has custody of his daughters after his ex decided that she was gay after a happy 14 year marriage and asked for a divorce. Times have changed, it isn't always the mother that has primary custody anymore.

5 out of 5 stars Mom's House, Dad's House.......2007-01-05

I tell everyone of my client's to get this book and follow the advice of Dr. Ricci to establish a co-parenting relationship after the divorce.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for some, maybe not for others.......2006-09-19

When my wife told me she wanted a divorce, I almost immediately grabbed every book I could find on resurrecting a marriage and handling a breakup with kids. I had plenty of time to read suddenly, after all. I found this book to be not only the most effective in handling kidds, but probably contained the best advice on keeping the marriage together. Alas, it was not meant to be.

A key thing: my children's mother and I have always wanted to be civil with one another. I recognize that many relationships do not end this way, and many parents are abusive or neglectful. There are other books that are better for handling those types of situations. For example, "Where's Daddy?" by Jill Curtis is likely to be helpful for a mother dealing with an absent or abusive father; for me it was not very helpful.

This book can be key in helping a couple that doesn't want their divorce to turn so sour that they can't stand each other's sight. It is helpful in handling each parent's relationship with their children, and their relationship with each other.

If you are already hunkered down in the middle of a war, this book may not be right for you; if you are trying to avoid getting into that situation in the first place, this book should be at the top of your list.

5 out of 5 stars Susan Ashley, Ph.D. Author of The ADD and ADHD Answer Book.......2005-10-13

This is my first choice for book recommendations in my practice for divorcing families. It is a blueprint for how to raise a well adjusted child in two homes. If divorced parents only followed the advice in this book divorce would not be so tragic for children. This book advocates putting the child first and tells parent how to behave civilly and work co-operatively with the other parent for the sake of the child, telling parents what to do and what to say that keeps your child out of the middle of the anger between former spouses. This book is for every divorcing family regardless of your unique circumstances.

5 out of 5 stars Definately one to keep.......2007-05-09

This book has many wonderful images and lots of inspiration for your home. The only thing you might want to know is that the ideas are best for those who own their own condo or a small house. Renters might be inspired by this book but probably wouldn't be able to implement most of the ideas.

4 out of 5 stars Small Spaces for Modern Living.......2007-03-19

I found the book very inspiring. The pictures in this book were meant as examples to push and inspire your imagine instead of taking a cookie cutter approach. The book also provides principles and strategies on how to implement your own ideas. However, the pictures provide primarily a modern and contemporary perspective for those of you who are die heart country chic or traditional.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book with Good Ideas.......2007-01-29

We recently bought a new condo and found this book helpful in planning how to organize and arrange our new condo. Living in a big city we've always been strapped for space and the time needed to organize. I think Atkins does a good job giving advice on how to purge and ideas on how to maximize space. My only compliant about design guides (either this book or magazines) is that they tend to show spaces that rarely resembles the cookie-cutter condo look that you often buy into.

5 out of 5 stars Small Spaces, major possibilities!.......2007-01-24

This book is fantastic! Unlike a lot of books on the market, it will really help you develop YOUR OWN space to suit YOUR OWN wants, needs, and taste.

The first few sections are devoted to helping you really examine your own living situation: What are your basic needs for your space? What are your not-so-basic needs and wants that will make your space suitable to you? Now, what have you got to work with? How is the space defined? What are your limitations on changing it? And, how would you like it to look? Atkins asks very clear cut questions that will help you evaluate what you and your home are capable of.

The next few sections are on basic design principles that work in any area. Use of color, lighting - both natural and artificial, furniture, and your own home's architectural features (doors, walls, windows) are explored.

Finally, every room in the home is given it's own chapter. Every nook and cranny is scrutinized for maximum use of space. From layout to furniture to walls and floors, there is helpful advice on EVERYTHING. Large, colorful photos and examples abound; and there are even case studies that show a room and explain why and how it works.

There are a few things about this book that I think put it above others in the same category. First, it really does help you evaluate what YOU are capable of in your own space. Second, there are helpful hints in the sidebars on nearly every page, which can be quickly referenced time and time again. And third, it covers areas that are often overlooked by other design books, such as hallways, stairs, and the occasional terrace.

For someone who can only afford a new coat of paint to those about to take on a major renovation, anyone can and will find some useful advice in Small Spaces for Modern Living.

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive look at designing for small spaces.......2005-01-23

Over the years I've collected quite a few books on designing for small spaces. What I really like about this title is that it combines the best features from the wide array of books available on this subject matter. It doesn't just present you with intriguing ideas and cool photographs; it also provides important design concepts, so you truly understand the design solutions presented. The book starts with assessing and planning your space, then discusses a variety of applicable design styles (rather than just the often-sterile, minimalist/modern look so many books feature!), room-by-room ideas, and options for special circumstances (such as an attic or galleried space). The book is also laid out very well and is a joy to read and reread. My only complaint is that I wish there were photos of every idea mentioned!

I did not expect such a hard book to follow. This book is not for green beginners. Terminology not explained and I found the photos unreconizable.

    5 out of 5 stars Perfect Upgrade.......2007-09-14

Andrew partnered with Lark Books to completely redo the original version of this book. They made a great team and this updated book should be in the library of every serious ceramicist. All the copies at the Kansas City Art Institute are well-worn and we are proud that Andrew is a graduate of the KCAI Ceramics Department.

5 out of 5 stars Best ceramic mold making book around!.......2007-05-07

I have read all the ceramic mold making books over the last 10 years. This book by Andrew Martin was, by far, the best I've read. Good explanations, plenty of pictures on how-to's. I first saw Andrew at NCECA doing demos with his molds. I really liked what was coming out of them. If you want to further your ceramic experiences with molds, this is the book to get.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the wait.......2007-03-10

Finally, a mold making and casting book, as usual, the photos are well done, there is a great deal more information than I expected and the instructions are clear. Lots of inspirational examples of other artists work. This was well worth the wait.
