Long has written a friendly, conversational book about bentwood garden accessories, some fantastic, others prosaic or elegantly simple. In nine main chapters, he covers selecting wood, making a basic trellis, more elaborate and decorative trellis designs, bentwood gates, bentwood fences, arbors, and trellises made without bentwood. He discusses the selection of plants for your structures, and finally, adds a chapter on simply enjoying your bentwood structures, even going so far as to include a few yummy recipes for muffins, teas, and shortbread to savor in your newly created garden environment!
The techniques outlined by Long can be easily adapted to your own individual designs and creative ideas. As Bertha Reppert, the founder of the Rosemary House, says, "I shall never look at plant prunings the same way again." Bentwood garden structures offer a natural, eye-pleasing alternative to plastics and mass-manufactured garden installations, making use of the garden itself to generate construction materials that might otherwise end up burned or in a landfill. --Mark A. Hetts

Recycle that brush!.......2006-02-25
This book gives good directions and shows many attractive ideas. I am going to try a living fence and some supports for pole beans in the garden-that should be much prettier than the metal posts and twine I used last year.
A Book for Dreaming and Doing.......2000-03-26
If you love the romantic look of twig trellises, arbors, gates and fences (not to mention wattling), this is the book for you! Using raw materials that most people have or can get for free (and Jim Long tells how to do this, too), the reader is led through the step-by-step process to make a variety of pictured designs.
Long also tells what tools and materials you need, how to make a work space, how to construct the basic trellis, and how to install it (including securing it in the ground). There's even a chapter on selecting plants for your new trellis. Best of all, Long reveals the trick for actually getting your creation to look like the picture (hint: it involves a picnic table).
This is a book for dreaming and doing!
A descriptive detailed book on how to make trellises........1998-07-13
The illustrations were very good as a first time person to trellis making, I found this book very exciting. The author made it simple for people to follow and do the project. I liked the detail he gave for making each project. Making arches to gates for your flower garden, they are all nice pieces of art. He tells also what is great to grow on the trellises. Thanks

Book Description
A fence is more than just a barrier. Used in imaginative ways, it can become an architectural feature that blends well with the style of your house, a landscape element that enhances the appearance of your property, or an accent piece that helps define a part of your yard or garden.
In The Fence Bible hands-on home improvement expert Jeff Beneke provides an in-depth, comprehensive how-to encyclopedia that enables homeowners to choose and build the fences and gates that are best for their landscape--both for appearance and function.
Beneke suggests the appropriate types of fence to keep the swimming pool secure, con fine the livestock, keep deer away from the garden, or create outdoor living spaces. He then discusses the essentials of proper fence design and provides step-by-step illustrated instructions for planning, building, maintaining, and repairing any style of fence.
Beneke covers every kind of fencing: wood, masonry, and metal, as well as shrubs, hedges, and trees.
Whether you have a tiny urban backyard, a sprawling suburban plot, or a small spread in the country, this book is sure to help you find the perfect fence.

Pretty Pictures.......2007-01-17
This book has lots and lots of pretty pictures of fences that are not explained or detailed. There is decent information about rock walls, but otherwise this book really lacks in the substance needed to build fences.
Excellent purchase - highly recomended.......2007-01-16
The author (Jeff Beneke) has a nice way of explaining options in a approachable and casual manner making the project of designing/building a fence and/or gate much more fun. This book is very complete in it's review of latches, hinges, fence options for consideration along with beatiful photography and sketchs to illustrate ideas or concepts.
Even the guys at our local fence supply company where we bought our materials were impressed with this book when I used it to reference a particular piece of hardware.
Review from someone who's not known as a handyman.......2006-07-05
I bought this book to build a 6' privacy fence. I didn't know the first thing about building a fence but this book takes you by the hand and walks you through each step. The author does a great job of keeping things simple for the reader/beginner and includes illustrations and photos to help you envision the process. I keep referring back to sections of this book as I continure to build. Highly reccomend this book to all beginners.
Fences: In thought, word, and deed........2005-09-21
"The Fence Bible: ..." by Jeff Beneke is an excellent, comprehensive guide. The title says it all, and the author delivers. Whether you want to build your own fence, or contract the project out this book can help you get it done right.
Fully lives up to its name.......2005-04-06

Fences & Gates: Plan, Design , Build.......2007-01-10
I was looking for a book strictly on building gates, but this book was helpful and provided some needed information.
Okay, but not particularly comprehensive.......2005-08-17
I purchased this book hoping that it would include a detailed explanation of how to build a fence; unfortunately, this book does not contain such details.
What this book does include is a general explanation of fence building concepts, lots of colour photos, and some step-by-step photo sequences; however it is brief on different fence construction techniques, in part because it tries to focus on all types of fences: wood, metal, and plastic. There is a section on building a gate, but again, it's not very comprehensive. In my fence building, I relied more upon the experience of others, and on examining existing fences to understand how they were put together. That's not to say that this book was not useful; but it certainly left most of the research to be done elsewhere using this is a very high-level guide.
Step-by-step how-to instructions for 11 complete projects.......2002-08-11
Fences & Gates: Plan, Design, Build is a straightforward, no-nonsense, "user friendly" guide to planning, designing, and building aesthetic and practical enclosures for one's own property. More than 400 full color photographs clearly illustrate step-by-step how-to instructions for eleven complete fence projects in wood, metal, and vinyl in this fine reference for do-it-yourself creators of all skill levels. Readers will learn how to layout fences on flat or sloped ground, how to install solid posts to support the fence, how to build curved fences, how to design and install the classic picket fence, how to design and build with decorative lattice, and how to finish and maintain fences. fenced OUT.......2006-10-05
For basic fence building, this book is okay. It repeats much information, right down to the images, found in other fence books. Hmmm. But what's most frustrating about this book is the copious inclusions of photographs of fences and gates for which there are no designs. I'm not talking about exact designs, but rather guidelines for building the particular kind of fence; for instance, how to have the vertical pickets enclosed within lower and upper horizontal rails. No ideas provided. I actually called the publisher and asked, and got a run-around but no real answers except that because those photos are from private properties, they can't help. So why include them?
Excellent fence book.......2004-07-21
Definitely worth your 10 bucks if you want to put in a backyard fence. Covers all the different types of fences, and describes the advantages and disadvantages of each. Plenty of color photos of various fences, plus illustrations. My fence isn't built yet, but this book is what I plan on using as my primary guide.
Comprehensive, recommended.......2003-07-18
This book really covers most everything you need to know to build a fence. Everything is covered in this book from picking out a fence design, through planning and building the fence, and installing gates. This is a wonderful book, one that helped me through installing a fence and gate at my own house. I highly recommend this book.

Wells Quilting.......2005-11-28
Like her mother, Valerie shows her quilting and artistic prowess in this book with several inspiring quilts to whet your sewing appetite. Bountiful colors and intriguing designs. If you are in a rut of patchwork, or you are looking to expand your quilting talents, give this book a try for inspiration!
Exquisitely lovely, but lightweight.......2000-08-23
Valori Wells' lavish photography alone is worth the price of this book: her lush, colorful garden imagery will be a very comforting re-read on a dreary winter's day here in New England. The quilt patterns, however, are a serious disappointment. There are surprisingly few quilts to be found among the exquisite portraits of rippling lavender fields and dewy pansies; and of the tiny handful of patterns included in this book, there are only two which I like well enough to attempt.
Beautiful book, good inspiration........2000-02-17
Through the Garden Gate is a great looking book. I enjoyed it for the descriptions of the quilters and their inspirations, as well as to see their innovative quilt designs. It includes glossy pages of photos of both the quilts and the gardens that inspired them. The quilt designs are fresh and different. It is obvious that many of the designs tell a lot about the designers. But don't buy this book if you're looking for any quantity of quilt designs. Buy for inspiration from nature. There are only 11 patterns included from 9 quilters. Clear, concise illustrated instructions good enough for beginners.
I'm not a quilter, but I LOVE this book.......1999-08-11
My daughter bought this book for my most recent birthday and it is absolutely fabulous. I love the garden photographs and the pictures of quilts in neat settings. I may even try to make the quilt on the cover for my daughters upcoming birthday!
The beautiful quilts & flowers make this a great table book........1999-07-09
I received this as a birthday gift and it is wonderful. It offers gardening information as well as wonderful quilt patterns. The quality of this book in content and make-up are worth the money. Amazon has the best price. You won't be sorry.
Book Description
Sometimes you get a second chance... Remarriage isn't the happily-ever-after Mibby McManus hoped for. Between conflicting work schedules, a rebellious teenage son, a mother-in-law who can't get enough of the Food Channel, and a cat-in-law bent on destruction, Mibby and her new husband, Larry, never seem to find enough time for each other. Then there's the part Mibby really didn't expect: the constant intrusion of memories. Just when she thinks she's gotten back on track, a phone call from California unsettles everything. It's time for Mibby to face her past or risk losing everything.

Can't wait to read another one!.......2007-04-10
As I've said before about this author, she is so good! I loved this book and couldn't put it down. I have a teenage son and I related to so much of what she was saying, just about how a mother feels about her boy. This is just a wonderful book. I love how she links scripture into the story and remains so real with her characters. Every woman can relate to Mibby in some way. It was just inspirational!
WONDERFUL! WONDERFUL!.......2007-03-20
This book is the continuing story of Mibby. She finds that marriage to Larry, after her first husband died, (book one) is not coming up roses!
This book, and the first two are for the romantic at heart, and lovers of flowers. Definitely a female series. You must buy the first two. Start at the beginning! I would hope that she comes out with the continuing story now that she and Larry have bought the local garden center!
A Better Read than Happily Ever After.......2006-11-18
Mibby and her new husband, Larry, return home from their honeymoon to begin life together, only to encounter Larry's meddlesome mother, Mibby's rebellious teenage son and dysfunctional sister, and more memories of her deceased husband than she expected. Happily-ever-after is not going to be easy. In the third and last of the Garden Gates series, author Hill continues to mature Mibby's faith, outlook, and behavior. Mibby's friend and mentor Louise bakes up a storm and offers good counsel, and Mibby learns to look to God, her husband, and her own heart in making decisions.
Wonderful!!.......2006-10-12
Another book by Patti Hill that I just loved. I found myself staying way past my bedtime reading. Very realistic and touching. Patti gives us a character we can relate to, not a perfect Christian, but a working-at-it every day type of believer. This seriese is definitely one of the best Christian fiction reads out there---highly recommend it!!
PLEASE give us more excellent books Patti!!!!
terrific realistic look at second marriages .......2006-10-04
Several years have passed since her spouse died in a biking accident. Mibby Garrett, owner of Perennially Yours Garden Design and mother to fifteen years old Kyle, feels it is time to move on. She accepts the proposal of Larry, who is kind to her teenage son, after they discuss what marriage means to one another. Both feel ready as they know what to expect. After the ceremony, they go off on their honeymoon leaving Kyle with Larry's mother Connie.
However, when they return home to set up housekeeping, neither had anticipated the impact of their marriage on their extended family. Connie not only redid the kitchen, but she is over every moment offering unsolicited advice and being hurt when that advice is ignored. Kyle struggles with no longer being the man of the house as much as having a new father. Others are almost as intrusive leaving the newlyweds to wonder if it was worth it. Mibby asks God to help her by guiding her through the chaotic loving interference of others.
Book three in the Garden gates tales (see LIKE A WATERED GARDEN and ALWAYS GREEN) is a terrific realistic look at second marriages mostly from the perspective of an intelligent, deeply devout caring person. Indirectly by how they behave to the beleaguered Mibby, the audience also sees how Larry, Ky and Connie react. Still this is Mibby's tale (and trilogy) as she feels so overwhelmed by the actions and reactions of others she wonders whether living in sin would have been a better option before turning to the Lord for guidance. This is a solid character study miniseries that deeply follows a woman from mourning to re-dawning of her life.
