2 out of 5 stars Medical Marajuana guide.......2007-10-09

Medical is a misnomer, no medical info at all. If people use this stuff for medical reasons it is still a mystery to the rest of us. I should have gotten a book on pain management alternitives that would have helped me instead of landing me on a probable government list for buying a book about illegal activities.

I had previously owned this book. I find the new one very imformative. I am a medical marijuana patient adn hope to put it to good use.

5 out of 5 stars Marijuana Horticulture: The Indoor/Outdoor Medical Grower's Bible By Jorge Cervantes.......2007-09-13

This is a very informative reference book. It covers many aspects of growing. The information as well as the photographs make this a must have for anyone who wants to grow medicine.

5 out of 5 stars Still Awesome Companion for Video.......2007-08-23

Even though Jeorge Servantez has 2 awesome grow videos out now, this book has everything you need to know, albeit short on hydroponics, however I guess his second movie takes care of this. At any rate, this is a great reference companion for any grower written by one of the top photographers and growers in Europe who also writes for High Times.

5 out of 5 stars Everything ya need to grow some marijuana.......2007-08-23

Ive always been hesitant to buy any 'Grow it Yourself' books. There are so many out there and so many opinions. But for years ive heard references to the 'bible' of growing. Finally broke down and coughed up the dough, and was it sure worth it! Anyone that can follow directions can grow great top of the line quality marijuana!

Buy this book and grow quality not garbage!

Book Description

Orchids are the largest family of plants in the world. With 30,000 known species, you could acquire a different orchid every day for eighty years and still not grow them all. Back in the realm of reality, readers of this beautiful book can quickly and easily find the orchids that are right for them -- which ones will thrive on a windowsill, which prefer artificial lights, and which need a greenhouse; which are for beginners, which for experts. And you can pinpoint the species within a particular genus that are the best ones to start with. Once you select your orchid, William Cullina's authoritative guide explains what to do to keep it alive and healthy. Featuring more than two hundred color photographs, Understanding Orchids covers everything you need to know to grow orchids successfully, whatever your level of interest or experience. With improved tissue-culture techniques making orchids more affordable, and the Internet making them readily available to consumers, growing orchids is more popular than ever: membership in the American Orchid Society has more than doubled in the last fifteen years. This is the book orchid fans have been waiting for.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars very practical information.......2007-09-19

This book has alot of practical information and has much more detailed culture information about many different orchid families, also has information about small orchid families that I have not found in any other book about orchids. This book also gives step by step instructions on how to repot or divide several different types of orchids including paphiopediliums and Phrags.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, lots of good ideas and beautiful pictures...........2007-02-10

I am an amateur orchid grower and have read a variety of books on the subject. So far, this is the best book I encountered and the most comprehensive. Not only that, it is a work of art, printed on high quality of paper. The pictures are outstanding and so is the carefully written text. This book is also just loaded with inexpensive ideas on various small projects that you can do to improve your results. If you are going to get one book on orchids, this should be it!

5 out of 5 stars The best.......2007-02-06

I believe that this is the best book out there on orchids. Mr Cullina covers the important and often allusive culture issues confronted in growing orchids in real depth. He provides thoughtful, comon sense explanations for his reccomendations that go way beyond those found in other books I have read on the subject. The second half of the book details the cultural requirements and rates the difficulty level of 100 species of potential interest to growers with experience levels from beginner to expert. Much more than a coffee table book, Understanding Orchids is a valuable reference that belongs in every orchid enthuiast's library.

5 out of 5 stars Friendly and useful.......2006-11-20

As a relatively new orchid grower, I found this to be one of the most useful books for a beginner. In addition, it is written is a very accessible, friendly style, with many examples of the author's struggles to succeed with orchids. I highly recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars A great book for beginners.......2006-11-05

I bought this book as I was starting into the hobby of Orchids. The book is extremely informative on the basics and attempts to discuss common problems people have with Orchids. The most interesting sections are those on potting mediums and the individual orchid varieties commonly found at florists or even the grocery store.

biggest problem with the book is that it seems to convey the idea that any of the solutions will work which is not the case. Successful orchid growing requires an understanding through trial and error of what will work in your home. There are some basic tenants for everyone; however, they get lost in the details.

All in all, it's a great reference book and I would strongly recommend it.

This book was interesting. It was very easy to obtain the information I wanted to haelp with air problems. I enjoyed it and would recomend it.

4 out of 5 stars plants with oxygen.......2007-09-06

Love the fact that this book has nice big pictures and explains
everything about the plant.
Have many plant books (from different states lived in) and this one is
very easy to read and understand and I love the pictures.

5 out of 5 stars I'm growing fresh air!.......2007-07-11

Love this book. Exactly what I needed to help me decide which houseplants to buy. This book has plants for different temps, situations, needs, etc. I'm buying a copy for several of my family members. Beautiful on the coffee table too!

5 out of 5 stars Why buy an airpurifier when you can buy plants!.......2007-07-03

Research based information about the value of plants in our homes. Certain plants absorb toxic gases from our carpets, furniture, and other items that can make the air in our homes as bad or worse than outdoors.

4 out of 5 stars A really great book........2007-06-17

The photos are simple, beautiful, and informative. The information for each plant is really helpful, and it's nice to have a chart of which toxins come from which sources. I really enjoyed seeing the different plants and picking a good one for our house (although it was hard for me to track one down and I actually ended up buying seeds for it--I hope they'll grow!). The book is organized pretty intuitively, although navigation might take a little longer if you want to find a particular plant (since they're in order of overall rating rather than alphabetical order, you'd have to either use the index or flip for a while).
The only reason I didn't give the book five stars is that I would make an addition to each individual page with a plant on it: I'd list information about whether the plant is poisonous to humans and their pets. For people who have young children, cats, dogs, and/or other animals in the house (or the clinic, or wherever the plants will be placed), this is an important consideration.

4 out of 5 stars Ed is the man.......2006-05-25

I have been useing Ed's books for years. I follow his column in heads magazine and Cannabis Culture magazine. He knows what he is talking about. This book is the ultimate handbook. It tells you everything you need to know to get a garden started. I think this book is very easy to follow and is a great buy. Theinformation is priceless. I trust Ed and this book.

4 out of 5 stars One of the better ones.......2005-04-07

I read 90% of this book front to back when I first recieved it. It could have been organized better, and yes it did seem to jump around a bit, but it had some quality information that are the building blocks for the best techniques available.

4 out of 5 stars great handbook.......2005-01-11

This is a great starter book for any grower. I still refer to this book many times. The information is great and useful. A book for people who are starting to grow.

3 out of 5 stars Good Presentation - Fair coverage of marijuana topics.......2003-06-05

This is an okay reference book. I found this book easier to navigate than Indoor marijuana Horticulture by Jorge Cervantes which is packed with information but not well presented. Between both of these guides I was able to improve on my cultivation techniques but there are gaps still not covered by both works. If you find yourself in this kind of a situation then I recommend that you look for normal botany books on growing. I have a collection of other readings which helped. You might have to go down that route too.

Well worth the read but you will need much more than just these two books.

I own the 5th edition. I glanced through a few pages (after having spent hours on the Internet researching tropical plants for my personal tropical garden) and had to buy it right then and there! I did not want to chance not being able to find it again. It's the best! I can't foresee ever having to wonder what any other tropical plant looks like! I've found plants in this book that I could not identify on the web or through local nurseries. I was not able to put this book down for hours after it's purchase and continue to use it almost daily. Totally worth the $185 price! If I'd lost it on the way home from having just purchased it, I'd be right back trying to buy another!

    Book Description

For centuries, carnivorous plants have carried an air of fascination and mystique unparalleled in the plant world. Growing Carnivorous Plants is a comprehensive guide to identifying and cultivating these remarkable plants. From the well-known Venus flytrap to obscure African sundews, from the giant pitcher plant vines of Borneo the microscopic bladderworts of Florida, more than 200 species, hybrids and cultivars from all genera of carnivorous plants are described. Included are explanations of the fascinating and diverse mechanisms the plants use to trap their victims. Imitating a plant's natural environment is the key to success in growing carnivorous plants, and this book will help readers select the best plants to grow on a windowsill, in a terrarium or greenhouse. Information on how to feed carnivorous plants will enable even the most squeamish grower to ensure that plants receive the nutrients they require. The book's 400 photographs include both spectacular images from the wild and lovely plants in cultivation.

4 out of 5 stars Best photos of any CP book.......2007-06-14

Although I haven't grown CPs (carnivorous plants) for a few years I haven't forgotten my interest and fascination for them, so I was excited to see that Barry Rice had written a book on the subject. Barry has long been one of the most dedicated and accessible "experts" on the topic, and his talents combined with his sense of humor often make for great reading. This book departs somewhat from the usual treatments on CPs, beginning with a whole chapter discussing CPs in popular culture, which I was glad to see even includes a photo from the movie "Little Shop of Horrors." Another departure is where he seems to give equal attention to each genus of plants, rather than focusing heavily on the more commonly grown ones, such as Sarracenia, Drosera, and Nepenthes (personally, I always appreciated the bias towards Sarracenia, but I recall that Barry was more partial to underappreciated plants like Utricularia). It is also a bit heavier on the topic of conservation than most - something he's probably much more aware of than the rest of us.

I find it difficult not to make comparisons to other books when there have always been so few available on the topic. But I was slightly disappointed to find that growing advice seems a bit thin and almost noncommittal, although I had to admit that it was accurate (it's hard to say which "way" is best in growing many CPs because what may work for one grower doesn't for another - a point made clear in the book). I think for a novice to CPs "The Savage Garden" is perhaps the best book available for straightforward advice on cultivation. And while I've truly enjoyed this book, particularly the sections near the end discussing seeing CPs in the wild, the species by species chapters left me feeling a bit unsatisfied. But the one facet where this book is head and shoulders above all others is in the photos. Barry's photography skills and willingness to get out into the field with the plants and get muddy make this book an essential addition to the library of any CPer. It certainly left me eager for the time when my schedule allows for a CP collection again.

    5 out of 5 stars CP Perfection.......2007-06-14

I have been growing CPs for a number of years and also collecting books on the subject. I have many, including rare and hard to find volumes, but none come close to the overall quality of this book. Knowing what I do of Barry, this comes as no surprise. The text is accurate and fun to read and the photos are to die for (no pun intended). This is a first rate, high quality book which would be worth adding to your library at double the price offered here. Thank you Barry!!

5 out of 5 stars Growing Carnivorous Plants by Barry Rice.......2007-05-31

This is a very detailed book describing the various carnivorous (really insectivorous) plants found worldwide. Descriptions include habitat, conservation issues, and guidelines for cultivation. Numerous photos are provided, especially closeup photos which are very useful.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-04-11

This book has excellent information and beautiful pictures that drape the pages of this book. Perfect choice for the novice to the veteren who wants to brush up on fundamentals of growing Carnivorous Plants. If you are looking for a book to help you out this is it. It is one of the two books I have that I would recommend along with Peter D'Amato's book The Savage Garden.

4 out of 5 stars Nicely done. .......2007-03-31

This book is good for anyone who is beginning to learn about carnivorous plants or someone who is interested in growing them. It is organized alphabetically by Genus with information on the physical plant such as the trapping mechanisms to native range and cultivation suggestions from feeding to climate requirements. There is an average of two to six pages per genus with lots of photos. There is a minimum of technical jargon with words that are fairly easy to comprehend without being intended for school children.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for setting up grow area.......2006-06-27

5 different gardens, from small to large, are profiled here. Many great ideas. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Small book with some garden designs.......2003-12-22

Five easy gardens is what you are buying here and is exactly what you get to see. This book is suitable for anyone who wants to see how some other growers do it. Cervantes goes to Europe to interview and photograph growers. He then uses the information they give him to write a book about how they grow. Interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the small timer.......2003-04-29

Jorge Cervantes, Mel Frank and Ed Rosenthal to the literate (not quite stoned out of thier head smoker) these names should mean something, these three guys have not only writen books that have recieved international recognition but have grown crops that have won yearly at the Cannibis Cups, all you people who say you read and review High Times, please take a break from your swag stuff and do some reading. This book is full of info for the first timer and those who want to start and stay on a small scale, if you just want to know how to start this will get you there, but if you are going to hang with the big boys get off the porch and start studying.

5 out of 5 stars This book rocks!!.......2002-06-22

This book rocks! It really shows some excellent examples for everyones level of interest. I only wish it would show a Garden using a 250w system.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent--but intimidating........2007-01-04

I really like this book, but I had to give it four stars because of its subtitle: "Easy Indoor & Outdoor Cultivation". The term "easy" is a little misleading. This book is a truly thorough work. In addition to the several chapters on cultivation methods and technique, the Mushroom Handbook contains a chapter devoted to the history of psilocybin mushrooms as well as chapters tackling biology and chemistry. You get a pretty hefty load of mushroom fun & facts for only two hundred pages.

I forsee a potential disappointment for those who purchase this book hoping to learn a simple approach to growing mushrooms. The instructions contained in this handbook are detailed, exacting and require the grower to purchase a long list of materials. I have to admit--I have NOT tried any of the techniques offered in this book. There are easier ways to grow mushrooms that require less time and expense. That being said, I think that the background knowledge and experience of the authors make this little number well worth the buy. It works as an excellent reference book, full of great tips to anyone willing to commit to the reading. The authors demonstrate sincere passion and expertise, and they aren't offering any shortcuts.

5 out of 5 stars Keep up-to-date with the most successful techniques for mushroom growing at home.......2006-07-12

Mushroom cultivation techniques are improving fast, especially with the advent of Internet discussion boards where new techniques are being discovered every day.

This book is very recent (as of 2006), and is the clearest and most easy to read book I have seen on the subject. It gives a clear and concise summary of many of the best techniques for growing the most popular type of hobby mushrooms, and discusses where to go to learn more about mushrooms of all types.

Compared to doing research directly from the Internet, this book is clearly organized, well written and authoritative. But perhaps the most valuable resource in this book is its list of reputable web sites and forums on the Internet, which helps you avoid the unreputable sites. Scams on the Internet are abundant, and anyone new to this hobby needs to be careful to find trustworthy sources for discussion and for purchasing equipment and culture spores to experiment with. There are many sites that will make big claims and then not deliver, leaving many beginners frustrated and much poorer with nothing to show.

The importance of finding clear and reputable sources of information and supplies cannot be understated. This book will help you get started safely and quickly. Buy it, read it, then go to the forums listed and compare what you have learned with what other people have already been through. Use this knowledge to avoid the common scams and pitfalls. Follow this plan and you will be happy.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent. Begin here........2006-06-13

An update on simple accessible grow techniques is long overdue. This is book is perfect for newbies. I recommend supplementing this book with other available information on the web, just to get a thorough scope of what's ahead of you, and what came before the improvements the authors present in the book. There's a surprisingly well written and researched Wiki page on psilocybin for those of you who are curious about its history and chemistry. Excellent color section, resource list and appendix.

4 out of 5 stars Very easy to use handbook!.......2006-05-25

This book is great. I read it and it is very easy to follow. I knew nothing about growing mushrooms but this book made it easy to do. I love the photography that shows each step. It is well worth the buy. It showed me what supplies I needed and where to store them. I recomend this book to all.

5 out of 5 stars This book IS in print, and it is excellent!.......2006-04-24

This is the most thorough book on this subject to be published, containing NUMEROUS methods for growing the mushrooms, a detailed list of materials needed, a glossary, background information, and 32 pages of color photos.
