Book Description

Acclaimed since its first appearance as the most practical guide to plant tissue culture and widely adopted as a textbook, this standard work is now even better. This expanded edition introduces new developments in biotechnology, such as genetic engineering and cell culture. It provides detailed recipes for propagating plants from more than 30 families. It explains clearly how to set up a propagating laboratory, from a hobbyist's kitchen to an elaborate commercial enterprise.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars just what the title says.......2007-05-12

Well laid out, easy to understand for a non-technical person like myself. You do not need a doctorate to use this book successfully.A good basic book for micropropagation.

5 out of 5 stars Introduction.......2007-01-11

I liked the book and I have read most of it twice, The book starts with the basics and and then moves on to the very heart of micropropagation, where it gets hard for me to understand. but if you want to learn about this subject you should get it.

4 out of 5 stars Soon.......2006-09-18

Certainly one of the better books I have read on this subject. Very descriptive and scientific. One downfall to the book and to the whole idea of tissue culture is the massive costs of lab equipment and growing media. Very well written book though, and a good starter book.

4 out of 5 stars The Best curently available.......2000-05-31

This book contains everything that you need to know to start cloneing plants. Some of the material is geared more towards comericial operations but there is a lot for the hobbiest too. I thought that it could have been organized a little better. The authors talk about equipment and media before they go through the cloning process. Parts of it will be boring unless you are planing to actually culture plants. For example there are several step by step lists on how to preform transfers etc.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for the novice........2000-04-27

For those just starting out, this is as good as it gets. Good for the beginner, but contains information useful to the more experienced. If you get hooked on this hobby, it shows how to set up your own lab without breaking the bank. The bibliography and list of supply sources will let you go as far as you want.

      Book Description

The Jade Garden is an authoritative guide to 130 of the most fascinating yet little-known ornamental trees, shrubs, and perennials from "the green mantle" of Asia. Based on detailed research and observation at one of the largest and oldest collections of Asian plants in North America, the subjects of this book were chosen for their superior garden qualities, their rarity in everyday horticulture, and their commercial availability. From an extraordinary, nearly black geranium with reflexed petals, to a ground-creeping honeysuckle with bicolored flowers and blue berries, gardeners are sure to find something new and exciting in these pages. Although plants included are from the "cutting edge" of plant exploration and discovery, the authors have included only those selections that have undergone thorough evaluation at the University of British Columbia Botanical Garden for hardiness and garden appeal. In addition, the authors have taken special care to exclude potentially invasive plants, allowing readers to be confident that any selection from the book will be an environmentally responsible one. With many of its plants appearing in a garden book for the first time, The Jade Garden is certain to be a groundbreaking horticultural event.

        Book Description

Orchids are among the most popular and widely collected of plant families, with tropical species and hybrids being cultivated the world over for their remarkable flowers. The aim of Genera Orchidacearum is to produce a robust and natural classification of the orchids, something which has eluded plant scientists and orchid enthusiasts for years. The editors, who are all distinguished orchid specialists, will incorporate the wealth of new molecular data into a truly phylogenetic classification, and will identify the areas and taxa needing additional work. To this end, they will draw on the experience of several international contributors. Genera Orchidacearum will be published in a total of five volumes over five years, with each volume providing comprehensive coverage of one or two orchid subfamilies. The series as a whole will be an absolutely indispensable reference tool both for scientists, and orchid breeders, collectors, and enthusiasts. This, the first volume of the Genera Orchidacearum, begins with several general introductory chapters outlining the long history of the efforts of plant scientists and breeders to provide a scientific classification of the orchids. The book goes on to provide descriptions of each of the Apostasioideae and Cypripedioideae subfamilies which comprise around 150 species in seven genera. Very comprehensive descriptions are provided for each of the genera, including the complete nomenclature and type citation, distribution, anatomy, palynology, embryology, cytogenetics, ecology, phenology and pollination, phytochemistry, phylogenetics, cultivation, economic uses, taxonomic notes, and a select bibliography. The Cypripedioideae include the slipper orchids, arguably the most attractive and popular orchids of all, and this volume should have an especially wide appeal as a result. In addition, it is beautifully illustrated with many line drawings and colour photographs.

This book works great for a college-level fruit production course, but is also written in a format any enthusiast of growing fruit crops could understand. In addition to general growing techniques, major crops from around the world are described in further detail with regard to their specific production. Additional information on the history of the crops and other non-food uses adds to the enjoyment of learning about the various fruit crops.

              Book Description

Many gardeners are vaguely aware of the "greats" of plant exploration, such as E. H. Wilson, George Forrest, or John Tradescant. Fewer may know the names of today's plant explorers or recognize the makings of a new golden age of plant discovery. Nonetheless, a quick visit to almost any nursery will reveal the bounty of these intrepid plant collectors, whose handiwork enriches gardens everywhere. The Plant Hunter's Garden profiles 32 of today's more prolific plant hunters. From the Czech Republic to the Rocky Mountains, Bobby Ward has sought out those explorers in the private sphere who are collecting plants specifically for horticultural introduction. While providing interesting details on the lives and careers of these new explorers, the real focus of the book is on the plants themselves. Ward asked each of the hunters to choose the very best treasures from their years of collecting, and has sumptuously illustrated these jewels in stunning photos. Many plants in these pages became bestsellers quickly after introduction from the wild, but hundreds more underappreciated gems are sure to entice and surprise any reader of this book. From the comfort of the armchair or the potting-shed table, readers of The Plant Hunter's Garden can embark on their own voyages of discovery in these delightful pages.

              5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2004-11-25

This is a great book for someone wanting to read about how and where different plants come from. Ward takes you on a journey of exploration making each of the entries in this book an adventure. I really enjoyed reading about the Sargents and Wilsons of our time and the great plants they have contributed to. I have already found some plants that I can't live without.
The photography is first rate making each plant stand out at you with its vibrant colors.
This book may not be for everyone, but is well worth a look from master gardeners and those curious about the evolution of plants.
