Book Description

One of the bestselling garden books ever is fresher than ever! Ready to inspire a whole new generation of gardeners. When he created the "square foot gardening" method, Mel Bartholomew, a retired engineer and efficiency expert, found the solution to the frustrations of most gardeners. His revolutionary system is simple: it's an ingenious planting method based on using square foot blocks of garden space instead of rows. Gardeners build up, not down, so there's no digging and no tilling after the first year. And the method requires less thinning, less weeding, and less watering."I found a better way to garden, one that's more efficient, more manageable, and requires less work," Bartholomew explains. Not surprisingly, his method quickly received worldwide recognition and has been written up in every major newspaper and gardening magazine. His book, which served as the companion to the nationally acclaimed television series, has sold over 800,000 copies. Now freshened with new illustrations, the book Ingram calls "the largest selling garden book in America" is reissued for the delight of a whole new generation of gardeners.

5 out of 5 stars Best Garden Book for Beginers .......2007-09-05

I have owned this book for years. Worn out more that one copy. This copy was purchased to give to a new urbanm garden project in a develpomently challanged area of my city. We will be teaching at rick young people how to garden and landscape. This is one of many tools we will use and is as far as I am concerned the best how to do it garden book for people who have little or no knowledge about gardening.

5 out of 5 stars Not "Just" for Small Spaces.......2007-05-12

Wonderful information is contained throughout this book for gardeners planting in small 4'X4' spaces to huge gardens. In fact, "Square Foot Gardening" is chocked full of useful information which can and should be used in any size gearden from a small container on the patio to very large gardens. The info saves a gardener many back-breaking laborous hours.
Before I read this book, I did not know that cantalopes can be trellised, which saves "those" vines from rambling all over the garden. There is too much info to be missed without this great book.

5 out of 5 stars Square Foot Gardening: A New Way to Garden in Less Space with Less Work.......2007-03-11

All the information a gardener needs to begin this method of raising flowers and vegetables is found in this book, which pleases me greatly.

5 out of 5 stars Love it -- it's so easy!.......2007-03-02

The techniques in this book ABSOLUTELY work! I have 3 4'x4' raised garden beds, and all seeds I planted are sprouting (and I have seeds left over for planting later in the season, too--no more wasted seeds).

Mr. Bartholomew explains all of his techniques very well and the book is very easy to read. I'm especially fond of his formula for good garden soil and planting with coarse vermiculite. I think this an extremely important step in preparing the garden, and I attribute my success, so far, to his detailed instructions regarding soil prep.

I'm not a great gardener by any stretch of the imagination, so I love the idea that I am growing more in a smaller space, plus my weeding HAS been very minimal. His technique of growing in "grids" is also very visually appealing and my children (ages 18 mos to 11 years) can very easily see what's happening and identify the vegetables that are growing.

Kudos to Mr. Bartholomew for writing such a helpful book for those not-so-green-thumb gardeners!

3 out of 5 stars I just can't be this meticulous.......2007-02-02

Is anyone really this uptight about measuring everything and not overproducing vegetables? The methods are organic and the garden looks lovely, but can you truly guarantee that no matter how well you take care of your garden you will have no losses to critters or pests? Last year, I had a family of raccoons move in and eat half of my sweet corn. The only reason my family got any was because I planted more than what we needed. The coons also got the raspberries and grapes. I've also lost beans and peas to rabbits, and been invaded from time to time by various creepy-crawlies. A garden is not grown in isolation, at least, not mine. I preserve what we can't use in season or store it in the root cellar, and when I get extra veggies I share them with friends and family. They are always welcome.

The techniques are good and I agree that it is better to take care of a small patch of garden well than to care for a large patch poorly. I am just more of a "cottage garden" style gardener, so this was not the book for me. If you like this book you should read some books by Eliot Coleman. He's a very precise gardener, too.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Learn to live without fossil fuel.......2007-09-08

Great book for learning the basics of farm life. If you are getting started into the subject of sustainable living this is the perfect reference guide for you. You may require a companion book for plants more native to your climate (this book's perspective is in the UK). Insightful pictures and well written commentary make this book excel.

4 out of 5 stars A well organized and complete guide.......2007-08-02

I was surprised to discover it is written sort of like a textbook. The more I look through it the more I like it. It's very practical and informative.

5 out of 5 stars A Fun Coffee-Table Book.......2007-03-04

This book is great for just flipping through, day-dreaming about owning your own farm some day. Even for the current non-farmer, this book provides some practical tips on things almost anyone can do to be more self-sufficient. This book would be especially great for those who are intensive gardeners. But mostly this book provides ideas about certain aspects of self-sufficiency that the reader can then take and mold to their particular situation.

I'd like to address one point that some other reviewers have made in criticism of this book, namely that Seymour doesn't go into enough detail. Well, this is a coffee-table book that covers a fairly wide range of material. As such it can't (and shouldn't) go into deep detail. What Seymour does is get your imagination going. If you want to seriously implement some of Seymour's ideas you'll need to supplement this book with others that deal with the particular topic you're working on. To criticize Seymour for not going into detail on things is, I think, unfair.

This book would make a great gift for anyone who is interested in the self-sufficient lifestyle. I love flipping through the book whenever I feel like daydreaming about the fun work I hope to do some day on my own farm.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely informative - Great reference.......2007-02-02

This book is an absolute necessity if you are going to be taking the plunge into self-sufficiency. It offers encouragement and guidance. It is realistic and full of traditional methods. It is a very handsome book, with lots of graphics and well written verse.

Simply cannot beat the price either. Simple, affordable, functional, and elegant - what self-sufficiency is all about.

5 out of 5 stars Great Information.......2007-01-19

This book has a lot of information about self-sufficiency. It is great of anyone who is interested in becoming self-sufficient.

The American Horticultural Society's Plant Propagation is one of those stuck-on-a-desert-island books. All the information you could ever possibly want in order to propagate virtually any plant or tree or cactus or succulent that might be growing on said desert island is to be found somewhere between the covers of this marvelous, informative book. If you're tired of buying many pots of expensive perennials, tuck a copy of Plant Propagation under your arm and buy one good specimen. From that specimen, following the simple directions, make many plants. It's the kind of skill that all grandmothers of a more distant generation seemed to have.

Still mixed up about hypogeal and epigeal germination? Can't tell a bulbil from a cormel? The very first section covers all the basics of plant biology as well as the history and basic how-to of propagation. The body of the book is divided into "Garden Trees," "Shrubs and Climbing Plants," "Perennials, Annuals and Biennials," "Cacti and Other Succulents," "Bulbous Plants," and "Vegetables." Each section begins with an overview of appropriate propagation techniques: the many styles of grafting, seed saving, taking cuttings, and bulb and root division. Individual plants within each section are addressed alphabetically. With Plant Propagation in hand, you can hybridize your own rose and name it after yourself. The text is written to an intelligent, somewhat experienced gardening reader, and the lush illustrations are accurate and effective. --Schuyler Ingle

Medical is a misnomer, no medical info at all. If people use this stuff for medical reasons it is still a mystery to the rest of us. Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring book for the beginner shade gardener.......2007-07-22

As someone who lives in an urban area I had little choice in the amount of shade in my garden. I've found Hodgson's book to be an exciting read with lots of inspiring photos, plans, and useful tidbits. I did have a few disappointments with this book but they were pretty minor.

The small, close-up photos in the plant index are great for showing detail, but are not so great at giving the reader an idea of what the whole plant looks like, how it sits, whether it is compact or expansive, etc. As a beginning gardener I had to look elsewhere for more "in context" photos of the plants.

A chapter on shrubs for shade would also have been helpful.

These gripes aside, I've found this book to be a great help in designing my urban shade garden and would recommend to any beginner gardener looking for inspiration.

I'm in the middle of landscaping our very shady yard & this book has been indispensible! We have lived here nearly 7 years & have done little exterior work except add rock. We didn't know where to begin! Wanting to sell next year has spurred us into action & I'm grateful for the advice in Hodgson's book.

I'm not a gardener, but I need to learn about growing things in shady places. This book is wonderful, easy to read, pretty to look at, and simple enough for an uninformed person. At the same time, it has lots of good info that even an experienced gardener could learn.
I can hardly wait to get out into the dirt!

5 out of 5 stars I love this book!!.......2007-04-05

This is the best book I ever bought. I'm a shade lover, due to easy care and most of all...hostas. Until I read Larrys comments on shade, I thought I was the only one who wished my entire yard was shade, and that I may be a lazy gardener. Not anymore! This book is packed full of great ideas for shade gardens, and lots of tips. Theres also plants biographies of those that do well in shade, and he continually reminds you that many "sun" plants do well in light shade. I enjoyed the section on starting a new garden from scratch. His sense of humor is great and its easy to read and well organized. This is a MUST HAVE for those that enjoy shade gardening, and for those who think shade is their enemy. You'll have a new respect for shade after reading this book.

Although primarily a reference text, Pruning & Training is also a stroll through an arboretum, intertwining beautiful and descriptive photographs with explanatory text. If you've ever wondered how a tree, shrub, or vine was trained or formed, this book will explain every how-to for every plant that stirs your experimental side. If you're saddled with an overgrown orchard, poorly maintained landscaping, or heavy frost damage to trees and shrubs, you can renovate them through pruning. Solid background material is provided, including growing habits (and how to take advantage of them), advice on pruning tools, and basic and specialized pruning techniques.

The reference is organized by ornamental trees, fruiting trees, ornamental shrubs, soft fruits, climbing plants, and roses. Each section discusses specialized methods for the subject plant type and includes a plant-by-plant dictionary. With the American Horticultural Society's stamp of approval, you can be sure that Pruning & Training does not neglect pollarding, coppicing, and pleaching. Step by step photographic sequences and before and after shots provide invaluable visual clues. Drawings showing pruning locations frequently feature a silhouette that illustrates the end result of the pruning method. If you'd like to try your hand at espalier or topiary, many training methods are also addressed at length. This is no guide for the casual pruner, but if you want a reference to answer any question you will ever have about the subject, you've found your book. --Molly McElroy

I purchased this book just over a year ago and use it all the time for pruning things like roses, trees, shrubs... pretty much everything.

Lots of great pictures and visual aids help to explain the various pruning techniques.

Got a garden -- get this book.

5 out of 5 stars Much more than academic .......2007-02-21

I have been pruning trees for 30 years (wow), and this is definately the best single source for technical information, and ideas, but it's especially good for its depth & breadth of coverage: a great variety of tree/vine/rose specimens and treatments. The drawings, pictures, sketches are the best I've seen in one presentation. These guys have done it right -- a first class book for the serious gardener!

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2007-10-05

I have only had this a few weeks but already have referred to it many times. It gives very practical information in a forthright manner. Definitely a great addition to my gardening library.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth having.......2007-10-01

Tracy's use of the latin name as opposed to the common name is a little un-nerving for a begginer- like me - but it is one way to drum it into you so that when you go to the nursery you will find what you truly want... plus the detail to specific plants is amazing. Appendix C is worth the price of the book alone...

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book I refer to it constantly.......2007-09-30

I bought this book for my Mother-in-law and she wrote 'The information is set out in a concise format which is easily referenced. It is packed with information to help you get the most from your perennials. It is a wonderful book and I refer to it constantly.'

5 out of 5 stars Garden lover's delight.......2007-09-07

I love this book! It is as beautiful as it is informational. It is delightful to read to the work of a master who can convey her heart as well as her technical skills. I am pleased to add it to my gardening book treasures.

5 out of 5 stars The Well-Tended Perennial Garden: Planting and Pruning Techniques.......2007-09-07

I really like this book. It is very informative and was what I was looking for.

This gardening classic was first published in 1975, and now a second generation of gardeners who prefer pest-resistant planning to chemicals will find a place for it on the shelves. Not only does it tell what to plant with what, but also how to use herbal sprays to control insects, what wild plants to encourage in the garden, how to grow fruit and nut trees, how to start small plots or window-box gardens, and much more. It's one of the most practical books around for any gardener of edibles, no matter how serious or casual.

Book Description

This classic has now taught generations of gardeners how to use the natural benefits of plants to protect and support each other. Here is a reader's complete reference to which plants nourish the soil, which keep away bugs and pests, and which plants just don't get along. Here is a complete guide to using companion planting to grow a better garden. 555,000 copies in print.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for the Gardner's Library.......2007-07-19

Great book. Very informative. I highly recommend anyone who likes to garden, or even those who just want to landscape their yards.

5 out of 5 stars Katy loves "Carrots love Tomatoes ".......2007-06-14

Really A good Guide... I work hard in my garden.. so I want the best results
this book helps me to do this!

2 out of 5 stars Notthing special.......2007-06-09

I was disappointed that this book offered no scientific evidence for companion planting, and offered little more information than you could easily find for free on the internet. I read this book, took a few notes and then sold it immediately. Not one for the shelf.

3 out of 5 stars useful reference book.......2007-05-23

I was hoping for a book that would be an interesting read. This one is more like reference book. It is comprehensive, but kind of like reading a dictionary. I would recommend it because it has useful knowledge, but if you want a gardening book that you can read and relax with, this one probably won't do it.

4 out of 5 stars ... and veggie gardeners just love companion planting!.......2007-05-23

True, there are many edible plants and herbs that Louise Riotte does not mention in her wonderful 'Carrots love tomatoes', and true again, her hot and humid part of the world is not the same as the cool, flat countryside
of Holland's extreme North (where I live). So, she doesn't write about witlof (white chicory roots) or our wonderful brands of kale, but what she DOES write about it absolutely amazing. In my view companion planting is one of the basic principles - and such a sympathetic one! - to create a healthy garden. And what better haven, to enjoy everyday, by yourself and with others? Good on you, Louise!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Gardening book.......2007-08-07

This book is exactly what I was looking for and could not find. I had a very old edition of this book many years ago and was looking for a replacement. This covers all aspects of gardening and what I need to know. I highly recommend this book. Easy to read, concise and to the point information.

4 out of 5 stars West coast disappeared.......2007-07-24

The book was a gift and was greatly appreciated. The illustrations are wonderful but the lack of west coast data was disappointing, the book is mainly for east coasters.

    5 out of 5 stars I want NEW.......2006-12-23

I have the Old version of this book. For the last 15 years it has been the book I first turned to for advise on planting, pruning, propagating and even selecting varieties. It was also the book that I turned to for solving the mystery of what was trying to kill my cedars one day and gave an effective solution. I didn't think this book could get better but I discovered I was wrong when I bought the "NEW" version for a friend for Christmas 2006.

Everything important to me is still there. Detail about the various plants, trees, shrubs, roses, and a countless list of perennials and annuals is quick to find, as are the demands each needs to thrive. Sections on saving existing plants through pruning, soil adjustment, pest control still remain with (in some areas), improved drawings, explanation and illustration will always be a lifesaver.

What I like most about this addition though are the thumbnail photos showing specific species of plants, specific photos of pests and disease. The drawings in the past were good but nothing compares to actually seeing a photo of the damage. I also like the attention given to the edible garden section. This probably replaced the "house plant' section which I never did bother to read.

In summary, this is a must own book for even a modest gardener. It inspires you to do more and help you to get there. It makes planning easier and solving problems easier still. It is a reference book worth its weight in gold and it is also now on my wish list.

    5 out of 5 stars Give it a chance.......2004-06-04

Reader's Digest... what do they know about Gardening?? It was with a disappointed sigh that I received this book as a birthday present in February. But, lo and behold, I opened it in April and have had a hard time putting it down. This is simply a superb! It is clear, concise, very helpful. I highly recommend it as one of the only gardening reference books you'll need.

5 out of 5 stars It's all the information you'll need packed into one book!.......2003-08-05

I had the use of my sister-in-laws book, but I had to have my own copy! What a great, informative, and easy to use book! As a beginner gardener I wasn't sure how to do the seasonal care, fertilize, do soil checks, water properly, or prune correctly. This book taught me so much! Many helpful and detailed pictures included with the text as well! Worth every penny I spent! I highly recommend this book for any gardening home's reference library!
