4 out of 5 stars found to be useful.......2007-10-03

this book was well organized in its presentation of problems for each type of plant covered. set in A-Z format of common plant names (though Latin names are used as well), the editors (Barbara Ellis, and Fern Bradley)give several ways to combat garden issues from an organic methodology. most of the ways of working with organics that they outline are not high cost, but are high maintainence as is all organic gardening, if done right.

the book also covers some common insects a gardener would see and if they are beneficial or not and how to work with the beneficials (what to plant to attract, etc) and to control the "bad bugs". they also outline some diseases and how to fight those with organic methods. then they touch on other ways to fight garden pests (cultural, physical, and biological contols). they also talk about different organic dusts and sprays and how to use them effectively.

    5 out of 5 stars Organic gardener's bible.......2007-10-02

If you want to garden organically and can only afford to buy one book on insect and disease control -- this is it! I go for this book first whenever I think I have problems in the garden, in the landscape, in the orchard. It's an all around great reference book!

No, this isn't a slimy murder mystery! Here's a guide to natural pest control in your home and garden (and even on your pets). It offers simple techniques to help you avoid the use of toxic pesticides and chemicals around the house, and is a welcome alternative to the old "Kills Them Dead" mentality of poison sprays and powders common in the past (which is where they should be--the past). Here's the guide you've been waiting for!

1 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2005-10-26

This book provides nice reviews of life cycles of various pests and beneficial speicies, but very little practical, useful information for controlling most of the pests. Very superficial work.

    4 out of 5 stars Garden companion.......2003-05-25

This is probably the most handy garden book in my collection for quick reference for a variety of maladies. Although it is small in size it is big on help. The author is a local weatherman in San Diego and many of the garden tidbits included on his televison weather segment are in this book. If you want to know to rid your garden of pests in a "humane" way than this book is for you. The recipes are more on the organic natural method as opposed to insecticides. There are plenty of old recipres for geting rid of those unwanted visitors to your garden. The book also provides good information on the beneficial visitors including some of the lesser known variaties. For example, recently I was being "bugged" by these hovering flies that mimic the flying motion of helicopters and I was trying to think of a way to rid my garden of them. After checking this book again I found out they are Syrphid Flies and actually are great pollinators and beneficial for controling aphids. Besides telling you o f the purpose of the insects or critters there are also mini history lessons on the origins of the visitors to your garden. Like this little tidbit of garden facts there are countless other informative ideas to help you have a better garden. Recommended for garden hobbyists who like to read in the garden after putting in some labor.

5 out of 5 stars A COMPLETE AND NATURAL SOLUTION TO GARDEN PESTS.......1999-06-12

I read the entire book from cover to cover with a highlighter in hand. I could not stop reading (and highlighting). This book was exactly what I was searching for. A complete and natural guide to ridding my garden of those pesky pests. I have used many of Loren's "receipes" and can honestly say they work. I would and do recommend this book to anyone who has a love for gardening, a love for nature, and a hate for destructive pests who get in the way.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent resource!.......1999-05-14

I listened to Loren's tips for years on television. It is nice to have so many of them compiled in one handy resource. The tips contained are cost-effective, easy to use, and far better for people and the enviroment. Highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars Great Maps, oh but thats it........2006-07-10

The maps in this book are of exceptional detail narrowing ranges down to countys which is hard to get in many smaller field guides. However this is about the extent of this books worth. Although the pictures are descent they are by no means fantastic or worth writing home about and there are not very many of each animal, usually just one example, which any herper knows is not enough. My suggestion get Tennants Lone Star Field Guide to Texas Snakes thats a far better read.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Guide!.......2006-04-29

This is a great guide - we are currently moving from Northwest Arkansas to Liberty County, Texas, and this guide will be very helpful in helping us to identify snakes we are not used to, and helping our four children to know which snakes are bad snakes. The pictures are beautiful, and I like that under most pictures, there is a label identifying where the snake was found (some poisonous in Liberty and Polk Counties!!!).

The only thing we do not like about the guide is that it isn't divided into regions of Texas - Texas is a huge state and it would be easier to look up a snake quickly if it were divided into regions of Texas rather than families of snakes. The poisonous snakes do have their own section, though, which is good. There is also good information about snakes in the front of the book. The descriptions of each snake are very thorough and we like reading about the habitats of different snakes.

We hope to find more wildlife guides like this one on Texas snakes.

5 out of 5 stars Texas Snakes: A Field Guide (Texas Natural History Guides).......2006-03-10

This is a must have book for everyone that lives in Texas whether you are into snakes or not. I've refered many to this book just to identify snakes in their yards, and is a must have when hiking or camping. I have an older version that looks like it's been thru the washing machine because I've used it so much. When this newest edition came out, I had to have it, and was pleasantly surpised with a few additions such as current Texas laws and regulations concerning reptiles. It's field guide size makes it perfect to throw into your glove box or backpack to keep handy. It has great pictures, discriptions, and ranges of every single snake in the state of Texas. Buy and enjoy!

      Book Description

Over the past ten years an increasing number of field entomologists and farmers have recognized that conservation of natural enemies is important to effective biological control in many agricultural systems. This collection addresses an important gap in the biological control literature by providing the first comprehensive summary of recent findings on habitat manipulation to control pests. Enhancing Biological Control includes contributions from experts around the world: the United States, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, People's Republic of China, and Switzerland. Chapters cover habitat modification in such areas as fields, orchards, or vineyards, and along or near the perimeters of fields, including hedges or other uncultivated areas. Generalist and specialist natural enemies are described in full, as are theoretical and practical issues. Experimental designs for studying enhancement come into play, and the editors include a modeling study that explores how the dispersal of natural enemies interacts with the positioning of refuges. This volume is an invaluable source of information to researchers, progressive farmers, and agricultural consultants.

          Book Description

This book is the best-ever practical guide to the identification and biology of beneficial organisms that control pests. Growers, pest control advisers, landscape professionals, home gardeners, pest management teachers and students, and anyone fascinated by natural enemies and their prey will want this book to find, identify, and use natural enemies to control pests in almost any agricultural crop, garden, or landscape.
The Natural Enemies Handbook is superbly illustrated with 180 high-quality color photographs and 140 expertly rendered drawings, showing hundreds of predators, parasites, and pathogens that attack pest insects, mites, nematodes, plant pathogens, and weeds. The handy Quick Guide allows readers to locate natural enemies that they are likely to find on almost any crop or in the garden and landscape. They can then go to the main text for clear, detailed information.
Natural enemies are organisms that kill, decrease the reproductive potential, or otherwise reduce the numbers of other organisms. Biological control is the practical use of natural enemies to manage pests. Living natural enemies are the agents of biological control. Virtually every pest has natural enemies that reduce its populations under certain circumstances. The book features chapters on biological control of plant pathogens, nematodes, and weeds as well as individual chapters on parasites, predators, and pathogens of arthropods.
References, suppliers, and a comprehensive index make this an indispensable source book. The up-to-date review of applied biological control literature will appeal to scholars.
