Customer Reviews:
Most USEFUL Book on Architecture EVER!.......2007-09-25
My husband bought this book for me when I decided to go back to school to study architecture, and it has turned out to be sooooo helpful. I have used it in every course I've taken; it makes studying for tests so much easier. It has a fabulous index so you can find what you are looking for right away, and the illustrations and page layouts are great. This book is a must for any architecture student. I really can't recommend it highly enough.
The Visual Dictionary of Architecture.......2006-08-30
As with other materials by Francis D.K.Ching, the illustrations are not only clear and precise but aesthetically pleasing. It is a pleasure to read through the material for a comprehensive understanding of architectural concepts, presented in an historical perspective which clarifies the how and why of modern day building technology. The Visual Dictionary of Architecture
is an invaluable reference for the student and architectural practicioner as well.
Ching's books are great! .......2006-03-27
This book is really good for architecture students. I do not use the book every day, but when I need it, it proves very usefull. All books from this author that I purchased are really good so far. This one has a lot of details drawings which are great.
Easy to use and read and understand.......2006-01-14
Somewhere near the very beginning of my lecturing career, I showed a slide onscreen and was trying to point out a unique feature of a home. Gesturing toward the screen I said, "that thingie over the window..."
I was mortified. What a dreadful mistake for a "professional" lecturer to make!! Since I planned to give many more lectures, I came home and bought this book from Amazon.
When the parcel arrived, I quickly opened it and was delighted to find the easy-to-read drawings. Ching makes the most complex architectural graphics easy to see and understand. Using this book, I gave myself a crash course on "basic architectural terms" and since then, I've given 200 lectures and never used the word "THINGIE" again!!

Very Good Graphics Book.......2005-09-15
This book was recommended to me by an architect for reviewing possible material on architecture license examinations. Graphically it's an excellent book. Bigger type letters would make it easier to read. Other than that, it's a great buy!
Book Description
"Spanish Phrases For Landscaping Professionals" is a collection of user-friendly words and phrases to help English speaking Managers and Crew leaders communicate with their Hispanic employees. It covers hiring and training, safety, equipment use and maintenance, demolition, prep., installation, light masonry, grounds maintenance...etc. There is also a section for dealing with injuries. This book is NOT a textbook, but rather a "point and shoot" phrase book for Landscapers who need to say it NOW, and who have not found time to learn Spanish while working 60 hour weeks.
Customer Reviews:
Get this book!.......2007-08-12
Great book!
It's separated into different chapters based on different kinds of landscaping work (papaerwork, masonry, laying sod), and provides complete sentences, with pronunciation guide and English translation, that you can turn to and use immediately. It also has a very useful vocabulary list in the back. It won't take the place of a series of night classes at the local technical college, but it will get you through the work week.
If you already speak a little spanish, this is a 5 star book.
Downside? There are some typos (misplaced or missing accent marks, wrong gender for noun) that will make the some-spanish speakers a little crazy, and make the non-spanish speakers look like fools to their hispanic workers.
Still, I take this book to work with me every day.
Great first step.......2007-05-14
It is apparent as I reference this manual that the direct limitation is in how limited the phrases are as it applies to usage in settings other than the landscape industry. Granted, there are other useful phrases that have enabled me to communicate better than I have prior to owning this manual. However, the gap present, and, by no fault of the authors, is one that does not present langauge that allows me to effectively direct in the nursery/greenhouse environment. Regardless, Holben & Arbini are to be commended for taking that all too important first step in assisting those of us deficent in the language arts. I'm pleased with the purchase. It supports me greatly in it's own way.
Excellent resource.......2001-07-20
I've been in the landscaping business in Colorado for twelve years, and I wish I'd had this book before now. We have many Spanish speaking workers in Colorado, and this book comes in handy every day. It has especially helped facilitate the process of hiring and training new employees. The phonetics and the layout are easy to understand and read. I am finally able to communicate more effectively with my workforce. This book has proved to be an invaluable resource.

A construction book.......2006-07-27
Great book if you want to know how to build structures like gazebos, walls, fences, pools, ramps, decks, irrigation systems, etc. It shows you the step by step with photos and drawings.
This book is not the right choice if you are looking for plants arrangement.
Great book.......2001-11-14
I am new to landscaping and bought this book because I have a lot of questions. This book gave me a lot of great ideas. If you are new to landscaping you will find it very usefull. Don't hesitate to buy if you are a newbie to landscaping.
A excellent buy; very good structure and content........1999-08-01
This book walks you through the processes of landscaping, from planning to installation, in a very readable, understandable and enjoyable manner. As a landscape designer, I'm always searching for references of any type to use when creating "yard spaces" and presenting those ideas to my customers. With books, I'm usually disappointed either with the graphic and/or written content regarding the details of landscaping, particularly those publications sold at the Home Depots et al. This was different. Technical to the point that's necessary and not too "flowery" in it's narrative, it just provides well written ideas and executions for many landscaping tasks.
The illustrations & photography in many books I've seen work OK but give the books an "old" feel, because, in many cases, they are old in date and style. With few exceptions, the artwork and landscape "styling" in this book appear current and appropriate. That made it a more believable book too.
All said and done, this book is an excellent value for those seeking general-to-semi-technical information for a wide variety of landscaping tasks. With its emphasis on extensive and educated planning, this book is an asset to the homeowner and the landscape professional alike. In my opinion, one of the book's greatest achievements may be that homeowners, after reading it, can decide better whether to tackle a project themselves or work with professionals.

Book Description
This unique 'quinqualingual' dictionary covers terms which concern the planning, design and protection of the environment. The languages are German, British and American English, French, and Spanish, together with many Latin-American equivalents. It is intended for the use of landscape architects, urban planners, nature conservationists and environmentalists, as well as planning practices, research and educational institutes and contains a total of approximately 10,000 termini. The terms have not simply been translated. As often as possible various interpretations at the planning, legal or technical level were also included in the definitions, with cross references to generic and specific terms, thus adding to the precise meaning and allowing clarification of the scope of each term. In the case of those terms which are not used, or as yet unknown, in one or another of the languages, helpful suggestions have been made for their translation. Definitions in each of the five languages are a valuable aid in understanding and provide alternative wordings for everyday use.
Book Description
In an industry that involves the skills, expertise, and labor of a wide-range of professionals and workers, good communications become crucial, and a common vocabulary is key to successful projects. Many of the terms used in landscape architecture, land planning, environmental planning, and landscape construction are unavailable, or so new, or industry-specific that they can’t be found in conventional dictionaries. This unique resource delivers definitions as well as how-to information via details and photos, going above and beyond the scope of a typical professional dictionary. With straightforward definitions and clear illustrations on each page, everyone from architects, designers, and contractors through grounds maintenance workers will benefit from this important resource. In addition, an appendix with labeled construction details will illustrate not just what a term means, but also how it’s applied in the profession.
Customer Reviews:
Lame. I give it one star - not the five indicated........2006-09-14
I was extremely disappointed with this book. It was unavailable for preview at my local library, so I took a chance.
First, there are no pronunciation guides. Granted, several of the words are common ones, but still, shouldn't a dictionary have them? Particularly in an Appendix that offers a selection of Latin-derived adjectives frequently used in a plant's botanical name?
The back cover states that "300 illustrations illulminate both definitions and methods." Hmmph... Several of them are poor quality photographs of items one learned to identify in pre-school. To wit: bench, statue, pickup truck, hard hat, and the like. You're out of luck, though, if you'd like to see an illustration of something less common like a sheepsfoot roller. Plant-related drawings are adequate. Drawings used to illustrate mechanics are frequently too small, or poorly drawn, to offer much detail.
At least this book's format is consistent: if it takes too much effort, don't bother. Caveat emptor.
Excellent!! Useful for the foreign student!!!.......2005-07-10
This book is exactly what its title announces. It is an excellent source for students and professionals of design. Plenty of terms, well explained. I truly recommended. It is very useful for the foreign designer, for it explains technical terms one finds in lanscape books and doesn't understand. Very good.
