Amazon.com Interview
We chewed the fat with Ruth. Read our interview. | |
What they might not fully appreciate is that Reichl is an absolute marvel when it comes to writing about food--she can describe a dish in such satisfying detail that it becomes unnecessary for readers to eat. In her third memoir, Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise, Reichl focuses on her life as a food critic, dishing up a feast of fabulous meals enjoyed during her tenure at The New York Times. As a critic, Reichl was determined to review the "true" nature of each restaurant she visited, so she often dined incognito--each chapter of her book highlights a new disguise, a different restaurant (including the original reviews from the Times), and a fresh culinary adventure. Garlic and Sapphires is another delicious and delightful book, sure to satisfy Reichl's foodie fans and leave admirerers looking forward to her next book, hopefully about her life with Gourmet. --Daphne Durham

Amazon.com's The Significant Seven
Ruth Reichl answers the seven questions we ask every author.
Q: What book has had the most significant impact on your life?
A: Kate Simon's New York Places and Pleasures. I read it as a little girl and then went out and wandered the city. She was a wonderful writer, and she taught me not only to see New York in a whole new way, but to look, and taste, beneath the surface.
Q: You are stranded on a desert island with only one book, one CD, and one DVD--what are they?
A: Ulysses by James Joyce. What better place to finally get through it?
Keith Jarrett's The Köln Concert. If you're going to listen to one piece over and over, this is one that doesn't get tiresome.
How to Build a Boat in Five Easy Steps. Since I'm going to be watching one movie over and over, it might as well be useful.
Q: What is the worst lie you've ever told?
A: I'm such a good liar, I wouldn't know where to begin.
Q: Describe the perfect writing environment.
A: I can write pretty much anywhere. But I prefer small, cozy spaces, with a good view over a lake or a forest, and room for the cats to curl up.
Q: If you could write your own epitaph, what would it say?
A: "She'll be right back."
Q: Who is the one person living or dead that you would like to have dinner with?
A: Elizabeth I. She fascinates me. She had a great mind, enormous appetites--and she was a survivor. The most interesting woman of an interesting time, and I have a million questions I'd like to ask her.
Q: If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
A: You mean after creating world peace? This is a hard one. But I've always wanted to be able to fly.
Book Description
Ruth Reichl, world-renowned food critic and editor in chief of Gourmet magazine, knows a thing or two about food. She also knows that as the most important food critic in the country, you need to be anonymous when reviewing some of the most high-profile establishments in the biggest restaurant town in the worlda charge she took very seriously, taking on the guise of a series of eccentric personalities. In Garlic and Sapphires, Reichl reveals the comic absurdity, artifice, and excellence to be found in the sumptuously appointed stages of the epicurean world and gives usalong with some of her favorite recipes and reviewsher remarkable reflections on how one's outer appearance can influence one's inner character, expectations, and appetites, not to mention the quality of service one receives.
This wonderful book is funnyat times laugh-out-loud funnyand smart and wise. The Washington Post

Made me happy!!!!!.......2007-10-09
This book made me so happy! It was just such a fun read. Anyone who's into food will love this book. She's a very clever writer. I didn't want the book to end!!!
food service for the high and mighty.......2007-09-14
I like the book til about 3/4 of the book. It was cute in the beginning, but it was getting tiresome. There were parts of the book that was funny. But, if you don't go to expensive restaurants, and know about gourmet foods and restaurants. It becomes tedious. I had a hard time relating since I don't go to pricy reataurants. But, it did give you a different outlook on the restaurant business. How they treat you. I go to my local restaurant, or coffe shop any day. They know my name, and it is personal. But, in these xpensive restaurants you have the status if you are somebody, and they will seat at the best table in the house. Getting back to the book, The best part were the disguises, how her family felt when she had all the disguises, now that was funny. The treatments of the customers if you were famous. They would get the best table in the house. And when she was found out to be the food critic of TNYT. Then they gave her the best table, the best wines, made sure she had a full glass of wine. I never even thought of going to a restaurant and being a social event.
Outstanding!! I Didn't want it to end!.......2007-09-12
The title of Gourmet magazine editor Ruth Reichl's third food memoir comes from TS Eliot's Four Quartets and is courtesy Ruth's husband, Michael but the reader doesn't understand his reasoning for the quote until near the end of this delightful collection of tales of Reichl's time as food editor of the New York Times.
Filled with stories of her life as a critic, reviews of New York restaurants--well known and some not as well known, as well as recipes, this book is absolutely unputdownable. Imagine, if you will, how Ruth discovers, on a trip to NYC that her photo is plastered on bulletin boards in restaurants all over the city and decides that that she's not going to be able to go to restaurants as herself and fairly do a critique. Instead she devises a plan. She will go incognito. Ruth enlists an old friend of her mother's who was an acting coach and with her help she becomes Molly, a middle aged woman from the Midwest; Brenda a vivacious and friendly woman; the sexy Chloe; Betty a plain elderly woman, and even Miriam her own cantankerous mother. As one can well imagine, these women get very different treatment from one another and VERY different treatment from Ruth Reichl, the food critic.
My mouth was watering as I read of Ruth's experiences in restaurants that I can only dream of eating at in NYC (although I do admit that I will attempt some good sushi again after reading how it is properly eaten) and I know that many a fine eating experience will be enhanced.
I borrowed the three Ruth Reichl books from the library, but will be buying copies of my own for my keeper shelf. I am not sure if I will eventually try any of the recipes, but I sure want to. The only thing that disappointed me was that after reading these three books, one right after another, that there are no more Ruth Reichl books to read. I guess I am going to have to satisfy myself with a subscription to Gourmet magazine and hope she has another book in her future with which to entertain her legions of fans.
Hysterical undercover foray into upper crust elitism.......2007-08-09
This is Ruth Reichl's third book in her witty autobiographical series chronicling life from food poisoned youth to New York's most esteemed food critic. This book describes in hilarious detail the many disguises she assumed to turn the world of food critiquing into a reality show of epic proportions! Laugh out loud good. One should really start with her first book, "Tender to the Bone", to get the full effect of this writer's charm.
Conspicuous Consumption.......2007-07-15
This book left me feeling like I consumed too much, uncomfortable and wondering why I spent so much time doing it. It's a little interesting in the way that it's a little interesting to know what Paris Hilton is saying and doing. In fact it may be exactly the same as reading this book. The author is good at describing food but not that wonderful at making the stories involving. Her fascination with herself bleeds into bizarre as she dons disguises at various times. I found her reviews and the peek at the underbelly of the New York Times fairly intriguing. However, the uncomfortable feeling comes from my understanding of how the privileged in this country have taken conspicuous consumption to obscene levels and we all become participants by glorify them. I don't want to know any more about Paris Hilton or read any more food orgies thank you very much.

Good companion book to Carrots Love Tomatoes. A must have for the gardener whether professional or homegrown.

Companion veggie gardening.......2007-01-10
I originally bought this book over 20 years ago from Rodale press and lost it in one of my many moves. It is an excellent resource for companion and inter-planting of flowers, many of which are edible, with vegetables. I now garden in containers and the concepts in this book lend themselves easily to this kind of gardening.
More about "Other Secrets" than "Companion Planting".......2001-10-19
I was a bit disappointed in this book. There were some references as to what plants complement each other, and what ones are used to repel certain insects, but those references were too few and buried deep within certain textual descriptions of various plants. Many, if not most, plant references did not even have companion planting information. Then there were the chapters referring to cosmetics, fragrances, and skin care that better belonged in a health and beauty aid book. I will be looking for a different book to supply my needs on companion planting--but this time will preview the book at a bookstore or library so I know what I am getting.
Companion planting at its finest.......2000-05-25
Roses Love Garlic is a great book for novice and experienced gardeners alike. For the beginning gardener, chapter 19 offers many sample garden plans for both small and large plots. The more experienced gardeners might enjoy chapters 12 and 13 which provide projects involve dried flowers and the use of natural dyes. My personal favorite is chapter 7, "Companion planting with flowers and herbs." This book is a must own for anyone interested in chemical free gardening.

Customer Reviews:
Great source of basic information on cholesterol........2007-08-31
This is the second copy that I have purchased for myself to lend to those I care about. This book is simple yet explains how to effectively lower ones cholesterol and improve their diet. It's a quick read for a short attention span without all of the medical terminology.
Good reference.......2007-05-29
Helpful in finding ways to lower cholesterol. I use it as a reference.
I don't know about this book..........2005-12-14
Just reading the description makes me wary. Chicory is a diuretic which it fine if you have a problem with edema but it could possibly cause dehydration if taken too often and not drinking enough water is a major cause of high cholesterol. Guacamole is made with avocadoes, Avocadoes contain high amounts of saturated fat, although it is vegetable based. I don't think it matters. Flaxseeds are waxy based seed. What do you think wax would do to you blood or even your digestive tract? What is actually in the seed itself is beneficial but extracting it would be costly and therefore unaffordable for most people.
If you like health information in little bits at a time..........2004-09-28
The editors of Prevention Magazine, along with medical advisor William Castelli, MD, of Framingham Study fame, have assembled a unique collection of information on lowering cholesterol. Actually, this book is about lots more than lowering cholesterol. The "chapters" run around 3-4 pages a piece, each one focusing on some nutritional supplement or food that provides some heart-healthy benefit.
The chapters on almonds, monounsaturated fat, pectin, flaxseed, and soy are among the most helpful. Information on health can often be confusing with pros and cons of various strategies reported in the media every day. The format of this book, with focused discussions on numerous foods and supplements delivered in bits and pieces, can make wading through the mountain of information more manageable.
If you'd like some information on heart-health without having to read a book cover to cover, but selectively for the parts you find most helpful, you'll get great use out of this book.
Too much outdated information........2003-04-19
For a book revised in 2002, there are several outdated errors or omissions. In the section about antioxidants, preliminary studies performed in 1993 were cited. Since that time, there have been several studies rebuffing the claims made in this book. The editors should have made more of an effort to keep up with new research findings. Also, the NCEP III Guidelines came out in May 2001, yet this book lists the classification of abnormal triglyceride levels from the 1996 NCEP II Guidelines. Personally, I was aware of the contents (and changes) of the NCEP III Guidelines by December 2000. Certainly the books' medical advisor, Dr. William Castelli, was aware of the changes in the NCEP Guidelines. The editors appear to have missed the boat on this issue.
The good points of the book are basic diet knowledge. Such as; fruits and vegetables are good, mono-unsaturated fats and fiber are good. Also, other sound advice like; smoking is bad and exercise is good. There are many good examples and explanations of beneficial dietary and lifestyle issues. However, the lack of current information and the almost conscience effort to steer people down a few dead end streets makes this book not worth the effort of reading. The bottom line: the book says 2002, but some of the information, or mis-information, is mid-1990's.

This book is easy to read, packed with info, and has wonderful recipes. I especially like the alternative remedies included using these three everyday items. MIRACULE MEDICINE FOODS- by Rex Adams.......2006-03-17
This book contains "Alternative Medicine" cures that actually worked for me.
Great help for healing!.......2000-05-23
This book gives wonderful simple cures for many health problems. They are especially good because they may be purchased inexpensively, mostly from the grocery store, not the costly drugs. They are natural cures, with no side effects as the drugs have. I will use it often for reference, and will give many books for gifts.
Mostly garlic.......2000-03-25
I thought this book had some interesting information in it, but I also thought it lacked some authority on the subject of healing foods. I happen to like garlic, so I have no problem incorporating it into my diet but I highly doubt it has all the medicinal purposes the author presents in his book. I found some value in the book though, if you can glean the valuable information from it. Garlic isn't the only healing food in the book but it permeates the pages pretty well.

Roasted Garlic Soup.......2003-12-07
The reviewer who threw the book out made an error by saying that there was only 1 1/2 cups of liquid: the recipes calls for 1 1/2 cups of buttermilk AND 1/2 cup of cream. Also, it says to add some more buttermilk IF the soup is too thick. Given that this is a very rich soup, it would indeed be appropriate to serve 4 with a half cup for each person.
Aside from this correction, I would like to add that I have made several things from this book and am satisfied that it is well worth acquiring for any garlic (and food!) lover.
The ultimate garlic cookbook from the ultimate garlic fest.......2001-05-10
Every summer, the Gilroy Garlic Festival, in Gilroy, California, draws more than 150,000 visitors who watch chefs do their cooking magic over outdoor firepits. Clubs and civic groups cook an immense array of garlic dishes from Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Mexico, China, Japan, Korea, India, Greece and the Philippine Islands.
The best of these recipes were gathered together and published. The result was this book. Mmmmm, garlic.
Excuse me.
I have to go and make scampi in butter sauce, now (one tablespoon of finely minced garlic in the butter sauce, plus a lot of other stuff that isn't garlic.)
It's a Festival favorite.
Recipes are not well thought out and are hard to follow.......1999-04-11
I have been a decent cook for a family of five for 40 years and have used many cookbooks. The first recipe I tried in this cookbook (roasted garlic soup)failed completely. The recipe was to make enough to feed four people but only called for one and a half cups of liquid. I then realized that about 4 cups of liquid was not included in the recipe. I have to guess they forgot the most crucial ingredient, chicken broth. I threw the book out.
Excellent recipes!! A must for garlic lovers!!!.......1998-05-06
For anyone who likes garlic, this is a great cookbook with some awesome recipes! If you like garlic when you buy this, your going to LOVE it after trying a few recipes in here!!

Book Description
Homemade Garlic Powder is Remarkably Flavorful (And Good For You!)
If you love garlic, but you've never experienced the fresh, unadulterated, taste of homemade garlic powder, then you're in for a pleasant surprise. No factory-processed powder can begin to compare with that which you've made yourself. In "Making Great garlic Powder" you'll discover why all those store-bought garlic powders are so second-rate. You'll learn the secrets of growing lush, wholesome, garlic bulbs without using any synthetic chemicals. And you'll see just how easy it is to make your own powdered garlic by following the author's basic four-step home process.
This little book is not just about making garlic powder that tastes great, it's also about making powder that is as healthy and good for you as it can possibly be. Homemade garlic powder makes great gifts, and it can be a profitable agricultural cottage industry too.
