Book Description
Ideal for would-be growers who were always afraid of roses, as well as for gardeners who already grow these beautiful flowers and want to learn more. Over 400 beautiful color photographs and 40 watercolor paintings.
Customer Reviews:
Good information, lovely photographs, attractive layout.......2005-04-04
As someone who's just getting into gardening, I was pleasantly surprised to see that this book includes sections on topics like soil evaluation and composting in addition to the expected chapters on choosing, planting, and pruning roses. Another nice aspect is that the fertilization and pest control sections emphasize organic methods, but also list others if you need them. The layout is also attractive and makes the book a pleasure to read.
Finally, what I've been looking for!.......2001-05-24
My friends and family all know I'm crazy about growing roses and collecting rose books. I'm often asked for just one book that a beginner could use easily, yet still not outgrow as his experience and interest expand. I know a number of books that fill part of this need, but not all. Finally I have found one I can recommend without reservation. This book covers the range from modern roses to antiques, why to choose own root or grafted roses, how to handle diseases and pests, and how to prepare the soil. The general orientation is for organic methods, but he presents the information without being judgmental. You won't feel guilty if you spray your roses, but he'll tell you how to avoid it most of the time by choosing easy-care varieties well suited to your own climate. All this, and I haven't yet mentioned the beautiful photographs and helpful instructional drawings.
Excellent photos and sound advice!.......2001-03-30
What first attracted me to this book was it's gallery of roses, the extensive chapter that describes numerous roses. After reading it, I realized that rose growing is more accessible than I thought, and I am ready to plant. Five stars!

Book Description
An all-in-one guide designed for northern-tier gardens from coast to coast
Growing Shrubs and Trees in Cold Climates provides northern-tier gardeners from coast to coast with an incredible range of choices, no matter what their skill level.
Part I profiles 50 plant groups best suited to gardens in zones 1 to 5. Each plant has been tested for hardiness over a period of at least 10 years--and has proved hardy to no less than -30 degrees F. Readers will easily be able to select shrubs and trees that produce wonderful fragrant flowers and those that bloom more than once in the spring and summer seasons.
Part 2 covers the basics of growing shrubs and small trees, with special attention on solving problems that occur in cooler climates.
Customer Reviews:
Great Resource For Cold Climates!.......2004-08-10
I have had this book for a few years now and used it extensively. I am in north central Iowa, zone 4, and this book has helped me to choose shrubs and small trees that can withstand my extremely bitter cold winters. What I love about this book is there are many photos, many nursery resources listed, and it is full of very valuable information.
If you are gardening/landscaping in a cold climate and need to know which cultivar's can survive in zone 4 or 3 or 2 then you need to have this book.
Thorough and superbly illustrated.......2004-07-20
How wonderful to have a book that provides the level of detail made available here for those of us who shiver through our winters and worry about whether the new additions to the garden are as hardy as the garden center promised.
The details? Everything from pronunciation to names of various suppliers. How to plant, feed and prune and informed odds about whether a particular plant will survive transplanting. Plants aren't merely promised to be hardy; charts give the specific temperature to which varieties will survive. The charts also show information about flower color and fruit, the plant's anticipated size, and comments about the variety's assets and liabilities for the home gardener.
Photographs are large enough to show detail and convey actual information: aspects of a particular plant or its appearance in different seasons, and variables among varieties.
This is a fine book and, in my view, unusual in that it is certainly well worth its sticker price. It is organized like an encyclopedia, notwithstanding some useful material in chapters outside the alphabetized plant list. As such, it does not have an index -- which might be useful -- and some of the text can be recursive. But these are minor flaws in an outstandingly useful and beautifully published book.
Very useful and helpful information.......2003-07-02
This book has been more helpful to us in many different areas. It explains everything from how and when to prune to how and when to fertilize. It shows both common name and scientific name in the table of contents to quickly find what you're looking for. If you are looking for a book that explains how to take care of everything available in the cold northeast, this is the book for you. Gardeners can't go wrong with this book.

Burpee is a widely known and trusted name in the gardening world, and the Burpee Basics series of colorful growing guides to specific plant types is a great reference for novice gardeners. In Roses, Mary C. Weaver clearly presents the necessary information for beginning rose growers: how to select the right roses for your garden, prepare the soil, plant, fertilize, water, and prune. Rose growers have a distinct vocabulary, and the large section on rose varieties contains a helpful glossary to terms used throughout the book. This is also the section most eager readers will turn to first: it's packed with information on the different categories within the four basic classes (old roses, modern roses, shrub roses, and climbers and ramblers) and presents excellent descriptions of 100 rose varieties, with photographs of most. As if anxious not to leave any good candidates out, Weaver also gives lists of additional varieties in each category. A generous resource list in the appendix recommends additional reading and offers North American sources for roses and garden supplies, rose societies, Web sites, and newsletters. Concise, reasonably complete, and easy to use, this is a good first rose book for any rose-loving gardener.

Customer Reviews:
A treasure of a book!!!.......1999-01-11
Exceedingly well researched and clearly presented, this book makes roses doable for everyone-no matter the climate, type of rose, or gardener's experience. There are terrific sections on choosing roses (grafting or own-root, grades, where to buy, etc.), planting, and general care. But the best part is "the rose gallery"-a list of 100 most carefree roses from among all the rose types, including old roses, modern ones, shrubs, and climbers. Weaver checked with some 70 rosarians, plant pathologists, and nursery growers in 40 states and weighed disease resistance, hardiness, general vigor, and overall performance to come up with the list. Each rose gets a good description and most have photos. A wonderful book.

Customer Reviews:
My favorite rose book.......2000-04-21
This book is a great introduction to the wonderfully addictive world of growing roses. The author slowly succumbed, starting out using every square inch of patio at his san francisco townhouse for roses, and now owns a large ranch in Petaluma which is an ARS test garden. The book deals matter-of-factly with planting, growing, and pruning, giving you options and alternatives based on your climate, attitudes towards pesticides, available time, etc. Naming one's favorite rose is a tough question; mr. reddell provides a dozen or so of his, with detailed observations that have helped me be more critical in selecting the roses I grow. His encouragement to show roses led me into my first rose shows - i enjoyed the experience hugely and have nearly a dozen ribbons now to show for it (no trophies yet...). I recommend this book as a starting point for anyone who is beginning to grow roses, and would like to be as effective as they can within the time they have available. It's been very valuable for me.

Book Description
In association with Jackson & Perkins, Rose Companions is the first book devoted expressly to the exciting variety of plants that can be grown with roses in the garden. No longer must roses be considered appropriate only for the rose garden. Instead, today's roses offer an impressive array of characteristics that make them ideal plants for many landscape uses, including form, color, and fragrance. And the number of plants that make perfect partners for roses is astounding, including:
- Perennials
- Annuals
- Bulbs
- Shrubs
- Vines
Rose Companions will give gardeners of all levels the information they need to create a beautiful landscape, whether they already have an established garden and want to add roses and other plants to it, or if they are growing roses and want to enhance them with companion plants, or if they are starting from scratch and have always dreamed of a garden lush with flowers-including roses.

A Must for the Rose Gardener's Library.......2005-12-09
The author's rose experience gives the knowledgeable rosarian broader understanding and the novice rich new territory to discover. Roses become assets for gardens rather than specimens separated from the whole. If I had this book when I first began my rose adventures it would have been a constant source of help and inspiration.
good guide to integrating roses.......2005-07-01
This is an excellent guide to integrating roses into a garden with other plants instead of keeping them in a separate location in a bare, mulched rose bed. Well written text and good pictures.
Shame on the publisher, though, for such poor copyediting! Next time pay a good copyeditor or proofreader and spare yourself the embarrassment of roses "baring their hips" (bearing, perhaps?) and "while your nose is ravaging the blooms" (really? RAVAGING?) and miscellaneous omitted words.

Book Description
In this memoir, Guilbault invites us into her girlhood, revealing what it was like to grow up as a Mexican immigrant in a farming community during the turbulent 1960s. With openness, courage, and charm, she recalls her early struggles to learn English, to fit in with schoolmates with their Barbie dolls and cupcakes, to win approval, and to bridge the tensions between the home life and the public world to which she was drawn.
Customer Reviews:
Memoir of a Mexican American Woman.......2007-08-27
Rose Castillo Guilbault's memoir is a great addition to the narrow field of autobiographies by Mexican American women! Well written and honest, this memoir will help readers, teens and adults, experience what it was like to grow up as a working class Mexican American girl in Arizona and California in the 1950's and 60's. In spite of our cultural differences, after reading this book I feel a kinship to this author. I believe that Rose and I could have been friends if we had gone to school together. I look forward to her next memoir because I sense there is much more of her life story that needs to be told.
Farm worker's Daughter.......2007-05-09
We haven't read the book yet, but our eleven-year-old, grand daughter did. She liked it so much, that she patterned her school report about her grandmother on it.
Inspirational Story of Farmworker's Daughter.......2006-12-11
Teens will be moved and inspired by Rose Castillo Guilbault's memoir, "Farmworker's Daughter: Growing Up Mexican in America" (Heyday Books, $11.95 paperback). The chapters in this richly detailed book arose from a series of essays first published in the San Francisco Chronicle.
Guilbault is best known as an award-winning broadcast and print journalist who now is vice president of corporate affairs at the Automobile Association of America of Northern California. Her memoir recounts the intellectual, cultural and emotional trek from her youth in the border town of Nogales, Mexico, to growing up in California's Salinas Valley. Guilbault fights bigotry, economic hardship and sexism. She eventually finds success in the world of words -- although the phrase "I can't" has no place in her vocabulary. [This review first appeared in the El Paso Times.]
A Disapppointing Biography.......2006-11-10
These biographical vignettes surely represent the experiences of many immigrants to the US. But they also describe the problems faced by most families as they struggle with the challenges of personal differences, adolescence, bad luck, and poor decisions. As a result it failed to inspire either my sympathy for the characters or a sense of need for immigration and/or social reform. Sadly, it is boring. The style is not professional; it is not even "good writing". I expected a story of hope and inspiration or a call to activism but was disappointed. I regret my reaction. Perhaps it would have been different had the story been told by a seasoned author.
You Will Love This Touching, Personal Story.......2005-08-04
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it's beautiful, descriptive passages. It is a very touching personal story, told through the eyes of a young Mexican-American girl, as she struggles to assimilate into a new culture and new life in California. Please read this book to better understand the Mexican-American experience, and to appreciate the sacrifices and struggles made by people trying to assimilate into another culture. I know you will love this book as much as I did!

Book Description
It is a myth that roses demand chemicals and special care to grow, as Barbara Wilde demonstrates in her beautiful, groundbreaking book Growing Roses Organically. It contains an identification guide for more than 100 roses that are the best choices for organic gardening techniques, a month-by-month rose care calendar, and gardening information applicable to all U.S. climates.By choosing healthy varieties and those best suited to the organic garden, gently intervening when it comes to pest and disease problems, and using proper pruning and planting techniques, a lush garden filled with roses is within the reach of everyone from beginner to veteran gardener. For any gardener who has ever tried and failed to grow roses, for those intimidated by the care and feeding of these unique blooms, and for those committed to the organic way, Growing Roses Organically was written just for them. Including garden designs that pair roses with perennials, wildflowers, trees, and shrubs, it is a one-of-a-kind exploration of how the simple makes the spectacular.
Customer Reviews:
Not the greatest how-to book for roses.......2007-01-29
I am a big fan of organic gardening, but I just can't agree with the other posters here who've raved about this book. I'm glad it's not the first one I've read on organic gardening or on roses. If it had been, I think I would have given up! Wilde makes it sound entirely too complicated, especially for the typical home gardener. Also, not that many roses are featured, and information on them (fragrance, etc differs from what I've read elsewhere and/or experienced in my own garden. An OK book, but be sure you read others and go to the excellent site help me find dot com to get some perspective. Visit local gardens to see what does well. And don't be afraid to experiment in your own garden, keeping it simple as much as possible. If you 1.) choose roses known to do well in your area, 2.) plant them properly making sure they have plenty of sun, food and water, and 3.) cultivate them cleanly, keeping their bases free of fallen leaves and debris - the job is mostly done. ENJOY YOUR ROSES!
Growing Roses Organically.......2005-02-10
This book is an outstanding resource not only for rose gardeners, but also for gardeners in general. I learned all sorts of useful facts about growing plants organically. The book is beautifully written and easy to understand. The illustrations are excellent.
This book is attractive enough to be given as a gift.
Wilde has given us a treasure:
her vast experience and great love of gardening.
Great instructions and info, plus beautiful pictures.......2003-02-22
This is a practical, pretty, and highly useful book for anyone who wants to smell the roses, especially in climates less temperate than the west coast.
The number of roses included is far from encyclopaedic, but for the roses Ms Wilde does include, she reports thoroughly on on their disease susceptibility, growth habit, hardiness, fragrance, and more. In nearly all cases, a gorgeous color photo accompanies. In fact, stripped of its useful information, this book would still be a fine buy for its large color photos. Before the gallery of roses, you'll find clear and helpful instructions about how to prepare for planting and how to accomplish the actual planting. Although the emphasis obviously centers on organic methods, this is a fine general reference on growing roses.
The book itself seems reasonably well put together. I haven't spent months poring over it yet, but I do not have the early feeling of dread when a poorly glued book seems ready to fall apart in my hands. Probably part of the reason is that the book is large enough to be helpful, but not so large that its very size works to break it apart. The format, in other words, allows for some large and luscious eye candy, but it is not as big as many modern illustrated gardening books which should really come with their own stands.
Photographs, clear drawings, and lucid instructions and descriptions make this book a pleasure to own and and treasure to use.
Direct, simple instructions and details.......2002-07-14
Growing Roses Organically: Your Guide To Creating An Easy-Care Garden Full Of Fragrance And Beauty by garden designer and horticulturalist expert Barbara Wilde is a fabulous, full-color guide to creating a beautiful organic garden tailored to the rose-lover's tastes.
