Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Three Southern settings, three unique adventures, three complete bestsellers make up this one satisfying volume.

When a plane crash leaves her disfigured beyond recognition, TV reporter Avery Daniels finds herself in the hospital, mistaken for a selfish Texas socialite, the wife of a famous senatorial candidate. Initially unable to communicate, Avery is given plastic surgery that makes her "good as new." Stripped of her identity and completely vulnerable, she learns of an insider's plot to assassinate her "husband"--and she's supposedly in on it. Reporter's instincts may be the initial reason for keeping up the charade, but soon other instincts kick in and Avery finds herself trapped in a world of power, politics, lies, and lust. Mirror Image is full-speed from the start, and doesn't ease up until the final, dramatic showdown.

"Before I'm finished, I'm going to know which one of you killed my mother," proclaims Alexandra Gaither, a striking young attorney out for revenge. Ignited by the cryptic words of her ailing grandmother, Alex storms into a dusty Texas town like a hired gun and reopens the 25-year-old murder case she's not even old enough to remember. Best Kept Secrets takes on the big business of small-town politics. Confronting the three most powerful men in the community, Alex attempts to find the flaw in their carefully constructed history. She's ready for almost every possible complication, every hidden danger except this: her growing desire for one of the prime murder suspects.

Schyler Crandall is back in Heaven--Heaven, Louisiana. The adopted daughter of the most powerful man in town, Schyler ran away years before, distraught over a broken engagement and painful betrayal. Now, with her father fighting for his life in a hospital bed, Schyler jumps back into a world of secrets and lies to salvage a family logging empire on the brink of disaster. Slow Heat in Heaven has been hailed for its "steamy prose," and won Brown the Waldenbooks Award for bestselling single title release. It's the perfect capper for this three-in-one pleasure-fest. --Sara Nickerson

    5 out of 5 stars Always a happy ending.......2007-07-18

I enjoyed knowing that these love stories would always have a happy ending. This would be a wonderful relaxing read for the beach.

1 out of 5 stars Not good at all.......2007-07-07

I normally like Sandra Brown's books, however this book of three novels must been very early work. It is so terrible I gave up in disgust and did not finish the last novel. I regret purchasing it.

    5 out of 5 stars Get it..it's great!!.......2005-01-21

I happened across this book in a used book store. I'm a fan of Sandra Brown, although I don't cut her any slack when I read one that isn't what I expected. Let's face it, we have to tell it like it really is. But all three of the stories in this one book happen to be some of Sandra's very best writing. Do yourself a favor and get it. I thought it was greeeaaatttttttt!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Liked the first 2, the other was so-so.......2003-04-09

The 1992 edition of this book is riddled with spelling errors and poor punctuation. I found 10 errors alone in SHH. I enjoyed the first 2 novels. I like the mystery aspect of both. The third, SHH was sub-par. I lost interest half-way through. A great bargain overall. Smaller print than most hardcovers.

5 out of 5 stars Sandra Brown is a literaray genius.......2002-01-29

I do not understand where all these bad reviews are coming form, I am a huge Sandra Brown fan, and I think that three stories in one was the perfect idea, by the time I have finished one, I'm ready to go to read all Sandra Browns books, and best kept secrets was one of my favorites, as for some of the other reviews, Sandra Brown writes fiction novels, so they are based soley on the creativity she finds within herself, and I think that she has done a dam good job at keeping us all entertain. No matter what she writes she does it in a way where I can not put the book down!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and Frequently Used Reference.......2007-10-11

I agree with what both prior reviewers have said about this book. I own approximately twenty gardening reference books and this is the only one I have found that tells you what to do with the plant after it flowers and when to prune it. My mother, who I swear has green arms as well as thumbs, also found this book very helpful and talked me into letting her take it home with her. Fortunately, I they still had it on sale so I could replace my copy!I also like that the cover is plasticized so that I can take it out in the garden with me.

5 out of 5 stars The first user friendly Encyclopedia!.......2007-03-02

I own dozens of Encyclopedias and this is the only one that I find user friendly. While it's not as detailed as the giant AHS books, the information is concise, consistent, and practical. Each page is dedicated to one species and is broken down by Features, Conditions, Growing Method, Flowering, After Flowering, and At a Glance which has a useful calendar outlining the planting, sowing, dividing, and flowering times. And that's only referring to the A-Z sections of the book!

Of all the books I own, this is the one I use the most.

4 out of 5 stars good, easy to understand reference.......2006-10-17

I use this book a great deal, and my only gripe is that there is no listing for common names, so you need to know the official name of something to look it up, otherwise, it's a great reference because it gives helpful tips on when to sow, dig up or let be, also lots of easy to understand info on where to plant and what size it will be. I use this book more than any other gardening book I have.

5 out of 5 stars A little girl long ago.......2007-09-22

Sixty Five years ago, when I was a little girl, I sat at my fathers feet looking at a book that had marvelous pictures of beautiful fairys, so stunning were their bright colors and silky wings that it completely took my breath away for never could I have pictured anything quite so awsome as these tiny little creatures, that I was sure were hiding beneath the petals of flowers in mothers garden, that I had yet to see. I kept this memory all my life sharing it with my children, when they were little, and now my grandchildren. Imagine my astonishment to once again see these beautiful little people again. Take a trip back to childhood and enjoy this beautiful book, share it with your children but keep it for the child that is you.

Beautiful book - I am painting a mural for my daughter's room and wanted to get all the images possible so I bought all the books by this author thinking I was getting a menagerie. But I wasted $ on shipping both ways when I had to send them back upon seeing the smaller tree, flowers, and seasons books were all put together in one place. Just wanted others to know that this large hardback pretty much has it all.

    5 out of 5 stars Botanically Accurate.......2007-01-17

This book is a lot of fun for me as a plant lover and avid gardener because of Mary Cicely Barker's attention to detail (when she was alive, she used Kew Gardens as a resource to make sure her drawings were botanically accurate). Bug lovers feel the same way; I've seen her praised on ornithology sites because her fairy wings are accurately drawn insect wings! I like it best of her books because it contains all her drawings in one volume.

This is a very lovely book. Full of great information for the more advanced decorator. It is a fine one to add to your permanent library, especially if you really enjoy making fondant/gumpaste flowers. She offers some of the more interesting and unusual flowers. She is from the U.K. so some of the flowers are not ones we get in the U.S.A. Most of these flowers require cutters, but she does include some that do not. There are good step by step directions, provided you do have some knowledge of this medium. The only flower that I can't find a cutter for here is the carnation and it looks as though it would be a great way to make it, too.

4 out of 5 stars Great overview but not enough details.......2005-03-07

I found this book quite helpful in idenitifying plants in my new yard. Since I did not have the luxury of asking the previous home owner what was planted, I have had to rely heavily on this book to tell me what I have. The down side is that while the book has beautiful photos, it does not give many details. So if you you are looking to know every little thing about a plant then this is not the book for you.

2 out of 5 stars Great pictures but ........................2003-11-27

Given the fact that the publication is dated 2003, I would have thought that the book would at a minimum reference most plants in existence today. I have many plants in my garden which are yet to be found in the book...Being from the Caribbean, I thought for a moment that the word American was missing from the title however, many of the plants to which I refer are found in the USA ... in particular in Florida...strange!

The content under the heading 'Cultivation' is very general and extremely high level, not sufficient to properly guide one in growing flowers, as we all know in many instances the requirements do differ depending on the hybrid..

Great book for pictures and perhaps for persons who just need an overview of types of flowers in existence but not for a serious gardener.....lots more work needed

4 out of 5 stars care for your cacti/succulents with a base of knowledge.......2007-07-23

I've read this book from cover to cover a number of times, always exposing more useful information. Particularly of interest are the many excellent photographs, which help us longtime cactus fans who've bought various cacti through the years without knowing what we've bought, or purchasing packets of mixed seeds, stand a chance of identifying these plants. Even in the photos that suggest planting possibilities, the plants are identified. Perhaps the most useful suggestion is the purchase of an inexpensive moisture meter (I picked one up at a ubiquitous discount chain for less than $5 that is a marvel of invention), which showed me that my watering habits needed rethinking. The book is printed on heavy stock, loaded with luscious photographs and details concerning the needs of any particular group of cacti/succulents - yes, there are omissions - the book covers; also there are planting tips, information on growing medium, fertilizing, etc.. Overall, this is a very worthwhile and valuable book for the cactii/succulent enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT ADDITION TO MY LIBRARY.......2006-09-24

I've been collecting these wonderful plants for a number of years now and am constantly adding not only plants to my collection, but books. I am glad I added this one! No one book can completely cover every aspect of cacti lore and this one certainly does not, But, this work, added with several others, help to round my research library out. Each new addition, i.e. books, helps and this was certainly a good addition. The text is well done as the author is abviously very knowledgeable and I did like the photographs. I did agree with another reviewer in that the shots from the top of the plant, looking down are indeed pleasing to the eye, but they fail, in some cases, to give a true picture of the plant. I photograph plants and find it is helpful to get side views of different subjects. That is not big deal though. This is a helpful book and I do recommend it highly.

3 out of 5 stars Not Complete but still Very Good.......2004-10-27

The book is very well produced and the photography is very good. The author is well known and respected in Cacti circles and the book reflects his knowledge and status. The first section relates to the history and discovery of cacti and shows some amazing photographs of cacti in their habitat. It goes on to show how best to display your cacti in suitable containers and then a chapter on the differing shapes of the plants and their flowers The plant catalogue itself does not show too many of the different genera, but the popular ones are there and what it does do is show photographs of a number of species within a certain genera and this appeals to me. Too many books try to over-reach themselves and try to cram in as many genera as possible, showing a photograph of one species and very short descriptions of one or two other species. In this book the descriptions of each plant give the average height, flower colour etc. and also the min. temp. each plant will stand. The book shares space equally between true cacti and succulents and they are presented separately which makes the book layout clean and easily readable. At the end of the book are several pages on plant selection in sections, i.e. Plants for beginners; Plants for the Greenhouse; Free Flowering plants etc. This is another plus. One criticism I have is that many of the plants are photographed from directly overhead, this may be aesthetically pleasing, but does not give a true reflection of the size and shape of the plant and is not really my cup of tea. But this is a small moan about what is otherwise an excellent book. At this price the book is a good buy and there is something for everyone interested in the care of these unusual plants. I am happy to have this book in my collection.

3 out of 5 stars Not the "Complete" Book without Yuccas!.......2003-09-29

This is a georgeous book, but it doesn't mention Yuccas at all! There is very little on Agavaceae in general.
The outstanding photography makes it somewhat worthwhile. All of the plants are photographed on white seamless, so they really pop off the page.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference, not just for beginners.......2003-02-14

If you had to limit yourself to just one book, this should be that book.

For novices, this book has excellent basic advice for getting started, including many pictures and of how to display and plant them. For those with more experience, the book is a handy first reference before searching a specialized botanical tome.

This book makes the specific point that (popular, commonly available) cacti are no more difficult to grow than any other house plant.

The book thoroughly covers the needs of these plants, including what kind of soil, how much water, what temperature and amount of light they prefer.

The largest section has all of the popular genera, including the tropical varieties. This section has excellent photography of the plants at their best. If a person had a cactus that's in this book, that person would very likely be able to identify it from the descriptions and pictures. The book usually describes the distinguishing feature that classifies the plants of that type.

Typical and maximum sizes are given, along with the plants' growth habits and the age at which they first flower (some varieties do not flower until they are many years old).

Also included in this section is the hardiness, or how cold the plants can get before they die. If you don't live where these plants naturally grow, this is very important information. For instance, many kinds of cactus grow where it snows in the winter and can be grown outdoors in most of the USA.

At least one of each of the different general forms of cactus is shown: columnar cacti, prickly-pear types, barrel types, etc.

Following the section on specific cacti is a fairly representative section on popular succulents. There are so very many different kinds of succulents in the world, even a book ten times thicker would barely scratch the surface. This book concentrates on those species which are most commonly planted alongside cactus.

The lists at the back of the book are almost worth the price of the book itself. There are lists that categorize cacti and succulents in every which way, including many species that were not pictured or discussed in the main sections. There are lists by how easy the plants are to grow ("easy", "moderate", "difficult"), lists by temperature range ("cool", "temperate", "hot"), and other useful groupings. These lists help make this book continually valuable, even as one's experience and knowledge grows beyond the basics.

This author (Terry Hewitt) has written other books on cacti and succulents. Those books are also excellent, and worth purchasing for the unique information that they contain, but mainly as supplements to this book.

There are also other excellent cactus books that are more complete, but also more technical - or more specialized (for instance, there is an entire reference work on just the "opuntia" (prickly-pear) species).

This book is perfectly written for the average amateur cactus lover.
