4 out of 5 stars A Good Book for Finance/IT majors.......2007-09-17

This book does what it sets out to do: teach spreadsheet modeling. I'm only on the third chapter, but the author does a good job including step by step instructions on how to create winning models. The author is also very easy to understand. So if you're going to be doing optimization and modeling in your work, I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, and includes @RISK.......2007-08-06

Ragsdale really makes spreadsheet modeling accessible to real-world business situations. It was a great asset to my MBA coursework. As a student, it came with a free student version of @RISK risk analysis software as well.

    Book Description

Asperger Syndrome has become an increasingly common disorder. One in 300 individuals may have AS—exhibiting characteristics such as average to high intelligence, obsessive behavior, intense special interests, and difficulty dealing with everyday social situations—and it is now more prevalent than childhood cancer and Down’s syndrome.

As the mother of a boy diagnosed with AS in 1994, Barbara Kirby found scant resources and support. She developed the internationally renowned OASIS (Online Asperger Syndrome Information and Support) Web site in 1995 to help other parents find the information they need. She teamed up with Patricia Romanowski Bashe, now co-owner of OASIS and herself the mother of a son with AS, to write The OASIS Guide to Asperger Syndrome, which has become the standout authority in the field and a must-have for this growing audience.

Now Bashe and Kirby have crafted a fully revised edition of this comprehensive resource for parents, teachers, therapists, and anyone who knows or works with someone with AS. In addition to discussing what AS looks like and how parents can guide their unique child through the social, emotional, and intellectual challenges of growing up, this edition includes new developments made in AS research over the past four years, new thinking on diagnosis and evaluation, the latest approaches to medication and social skills development, and tips on navigating the maze of interventions, therapies, and special education. The authors know firsthand the joys and frustrations of raising children with AS, and they share their own experiences as well as those of dozens of parents facing the same issues.

Filled with practical information and emotional support, this is the most complete and authoritative guide available. Whether your child has been diagnosed or troubling symptoms are just becoming apparent, this book will point you in the right direction as you face the particular challenges of loving and raising a child with Asperger Syndrome.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2004-06-25

This book is definitely very advanced and is very clearly written. The approach will:
    - state (and explain) business problems
    - explain the rational in choosing the computer tool (despite the title, the book is not entirely focused on Excel).
    - walk you step by step through the modeling process

The CD contains some valuable tools for advances topics (monte carlo and discrete event simulation). Frontline Systems were alo kind enough to send free of charge an updated version of the premium solver for education (the version on CD is not compatible with Excel 2003).

I consider the book a great value and recommend it to anyone who is willing to invest the time to learn from it.

4 out of 5 stars Fasten your seatbelts..........2004-01-28

I'll make two separate sets of comments - one for professors and one for students.

Students first... This will be a difficult course no matter which textbook you use. Having said that, I would say that the text is about average in terms of readability in comparison to other texts on the subject. There are plenty of realistic cases to illustrate basic decision/ management science concepts, as well as a very useful CD, with which I recommend that you become well-acquainted as the course moves forward. Not much has changed since the last edition, so you may be able to get by with a previous edition if the textbook (authored by Eppen). Be advised, however, that some of the chapter materials have been re-arranged, including the exercises at the end of each chapter.

For professors... You are probably already aware that this course can be challenging for the professor as well as the student, esp. with respect to how math-intensive you wish the course to be. I think Moore & Weatherford is an excellent text, but it is written as an advanced graduate text. I have been able to "tone it down" for undergraduates by accompanying it with a nice, soft, theory-oriented text on decision/ management science (featuring the teachings of Herbert Simon and some of the early decision science theorists). The text is accompanied with ample instructor resources including a very useful CD with solutions, decision science software. I would engage the students w/ the CD as early as possible. I have also found that the best exams for this course are take-home exams - give the students some moderately challenging decision models to formulate and solve, and focus your evaluation primarily on how well they are able to interpret the results and propose recommendations for decision makers, and secondarily on whether they were able to get the software to spit out the right answers.

2 out of 5 stars Confusing and Poorly Written.......2004-01-22

Had to buy this book for my class. On the surface it looked OK -- plenty to screenshots and examples, but the problems arise when you try to read the long paragraphs. Language could have been clearer.
Book assumes solid knowledge of Excel, which should be expected of students, but still, some things should not be taken for granted :)
Another classic problem -- chapter 4 refers to examples mentioned in chapter 2. I hate this kind of cross-referencing !

Don't buy it if you can live without it.

    ...

1 out of 5 stars Unnecessarily difficult to understand.......2003-11-08

This book is makes a difficult subject even more difficult. It assumes that you already know alot of the concepts in it. It kin of leaves you stumbling around in the dark. I hate this book and the person who wrote it with a passion. A good author should be able to explain concepts in clear organized language, I do not care how difficult.

2 out of 5 stars Not for the uninitiated.......2003-02-18

I had to buy this book for class. Even the professor stated that the book was heavy going and has to be reread over and over again to understand it. There are examples but they really don't go over them in enough detail. This book is really for someone who already has a good user knowledge of excel and somewhat familiar with solver. Many of my classmates have expressed dissatisfaction with the contents and how it was written. My main complaint is that there are not enough examples to illustrate the many new concepts found in this book. This is a difficult subject and the book doesn't make it easier.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Classroom Management.......2006-02-26

I had to buy and read this book for a classroom management class. It is a great book for comparing the most recent research available. However, you usually need to read five to ten pages of what could have been stated in a paragraph. I do feel that I really understand the material by the time I finish reading the book. I have also used many of the ideas in my classroom to try and improve my classroom management in my student teaching experience.

1 out of 5 stars required class reading.......2005-02-22

I was required to purchase this book for a class I am currently taking. While the content of the book could be useful, the manner in which it is written is laden with ridiculous run-on ideas that could be communicated much more clearly. Here is an example from page 28:

"Regardless of the extent to which teachers decide to adapt to the norms and parenting styles of their student's culture or systematically assists students in learning to adapt while maintaining their cultural values, the point is that as educators we are willing to examine our own beliefs and way of working with students in light of the contextual variables existing in the classroom, school and community."

To students who may be required to read this text: Good luck. Perhaps you can change classes before it is too late.

To professors who may add this book to their required reading list: Please, please, please pass on this text and choose something more relevant and tangible for your students.

To educators who may choose this book to answer questions or add to their professional library: choose something else. This book is useless. My advice is your time will be better spent going to talk to teachers who have been in the field rather than reading this book.

      Book Description

"Once again, Phil Schlechty demonstrates why I consider him to be one of the clearest minds in American education. He knows how important public education is to our democracy and has real ideas for making it better. This book is a must-read for policymakers at any level and for those who think and care about school improvement."
--Paul D. Houston, executive director, American Association of School Administrators

"Schlechty shares leading-edge insights and offers practical guidance to anyone who affects student learning. His suggestions are wonderful dialogue starters for educators searching for ways to make dramatic improvement in schools."
--Dennis Sparks, executive director, National Staff Development Council

In this visionary book, renowned educator Phillip Schlechty argues for change-adept school systems. He not only challenges educational administrators, teachers, teacher leaders, legislators, and policymakers to recognize the need for transformation, but also shows how they can grow into skillful leaders of lasting change. Shaking Up the Schoolhouse begins with an incisive discussion of the dangers and opportunities in reworking school systems. Drawing from decades of experience and from actual cases, the author describes the essential characteristics of change-adept organizations. He then presents a practical framework for helping teachers to overcome obstacles in the learning experience, from reviewing the competition to improving student engagement through more effective standards. Schlechty also focuses on empowering principals, superintAndents, and school board members as they struggle with structural and cultural change in their schools and communities.

      Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Pretentious with little practical value for teachers.......2001-07-28

In his preface to Shaking Up the Schoolhouse, Phillip Schlechty describes his belief of what should be educatorýs mission. He states that the business of Ford is not to provide stockholders ýwith a decent return on their investment.ý But rather, ýto produce an automobile that people will buy at a price that will keep the company in business and provide company stockholders with a decent return on their investment.ý He uses this as an analogy for schools. He argues that schoolsý business is ýto provide students with experiences that ensure that these educational ends are attained for all, or nearly all, children.ý Consequently, ýeducation is not the business of schools.ý

This simple, logical premise is deeply flawed. He implies that all successful companies must operate this way. They do not. The Coca-Cola Companyýs mission, for example, is ýto provide value to its shareholders.ý Would Schlechty argue that Coke, the worldýs most recognizable brand, is wrong? Fordýs approach may be a decent model for success. But it is hardly the model all should emulate.

Part One, ýUnderstanding the System,ý is most successful. He discusses the things with which schools must compete if they are to get and hold the attention of students. They include the Internet, television, music, video games, and film. He is especially astute when he points to the mobility students have today as a major factor for taking their attention away from schools.

Cars and portable music were early culprits in making interesting diversions more accessible. These ýmade it possible for young people to listen to Elvis Presley and other ýforbidden musicý beyond the hearing of parents.ý Similarly, paperbacks and cheap magazines became readily available. Consequently, if students craved reading, there was no guarantee they would read material sanctioned by the local school district. This portability has increased exponentially with the information age. More information might be available to kids. But getting students to concentrate on knowledge we think is important is greater challenge. Further, the increase of divorce and non-traditional families has further complicated things.

In Part Two, ýCreating Quality Learning Experiencesý, he suggests how educators use their skills to regain studentsý attention. More accurately, he offers one suggestion ý ýEducational leaders must focus on those things that result in learning.ý Those things he calls ýtasks,ý ýactivities,ý and ýwork.ý

But he never offers one concrete example of successful implementation of his thesis. There is no inspiration from a history teacher that got kids passionate about World War II. Nowhere is there an example of an activity employed by an English teacher to get a pupil to see the world differently after reading a poem. Nor does he give examples of specific programs that failed.

Midway through, it looks like heýll offer a reasoned account of an experience and its influence in the classroom. He recalls visiting a bar where people were playing a trivia game. Patrons had electronic keypads hooked up to a network with other players. They could compare their scores with other bar patronsý across the country. He is awed by their enthusiasm. Put another way, he discovers Trivial Pursuit.

He doesnýt arguer for wiring all classrooms with similar devices. But he does recognize the value in the interaction of people with others inherent in this activity. He smartly suggests that the communal aspect of the game is key to its success and potentially is a key to understanding what might get students interested in learning. Unfortunately, he stops there. Should such games be used in the classroom? Why or why not?

His fascination with the game is another indication why the book fails. He seems to have had his head in the sand for what is going on in the world. Does he know what things are pulling studentsý focus? Has he heard of ýJeopardy,ý or ýWho Wants to be a Millionaire?ý He needs to be forthright in addressing what specific things are taking their attention from us now. Educators to realize that they have an obligation to see what cultural shifts are pulling the attention of students.

Itýs been 50 years since Elvis signaled the dawn of a revolution. What would Schlechty recommend to a science teacher trying to get a kid more interested in chemistry than Marilyn Manson? What should a social studies teacher do to shatter the false image of World War II perpetrated by Disneyýs ýPearl Harborý? He will not say.

Schlechty is further hampered by convoluted language that does little to make his case accessible or succinct. Here is an example of Schlechtyýs eloquence:

To understand whether students are expending enough effort on a task, it is important to understand both the learning goals and the performance goals associated with the task and to assess as well the extent to which the learning goals are being supported by or suppressed by the performance goals, which are the center of so many of todayýs efforts at assessment of student learning.

      Huh?

His epilogue hypothesizes about public education in the year 2020. He envisions a world where public education is increasingly becoming the exception. Home schooling and private schooling are on the rise. American society is retreating into a world of subcultures. We no longer learn from our commonalities, but pride ourselves on what divides us. It is a frightening scenario that he imagines coming to pass if public education continues on its current path and if school vouchers become a reality.

He ends offering a brief theory on what vouchers might mean to American education. With governmentýs money, there are potential pitfalls for private schools that might find that the money comes with strings attached. Given the recent Senate vote demanding the Boy Scoutsý access to school property, it is a very real possibility. His discussion is lucid, concise, direct, and specific. Ironically, he ends with very identifiable ideas that the 220 preceding pages lack.

5 out of 5 stars A book full of educational administration wisdom........2000-12-02

In his latest book, "Shaking up the school house." Phil Schlechty hits lots of home runs. I am always amazed at the clarity and intelligence of his thoughts. This is probably not something that you would read in a review of a book about educational administration, but I found the book gripping and difficult to put down.

The theme that came through from "Inventing better schools" that the teacher's job is to engage the students in meaningful learning is developed in the "WOW" (working on work) framework.

To be hung in lights is his argument that judging schools on student outcomes or standardised tests is fallacious and he argues that students produce scores not schools. Accountability processes therefore need to examine the educational processes not just the outcomes.

Part 3 which examines transformational leadership is very good and Schlechty's 14 competencies for school leaders is very useful to practitioners who wish to review their performance against descriptors of an excellent model of school leadership.

I have just finished my first reading of the book and I was blown away by reading so much common sense in one book. Now, I am off to get my pencil and see what I missed in the first reading!

      Book Description

OLAP enables users to access information from multidimensional data warehouses almost instantly, to view information in any way they like, and to cleanly specify and carry out sophisticated calculations. Although many commercial OLAP tools and products are now available, OLAP is still a difficult and complex technology to master.

      Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Unclear and wordy.......2007-06-04

I had high hopes for this book since I am a data miner who senses the need for alternatives to the slow tools commonly used to assemble large data sets for analysis. Unfortunately, I found this book to be overlong and I did not emerge with a clear picture of what distinguished OLAP tools from the alternatives.....

2 out of 5 stars Time is valuable. This book is not worth a developers time........2006-11-01

I have never written a book review, but I felt compelled to write about this book because there are not many good books on OLAP - and this one really misses the mark from a developer's perspective. If you want a book with good examples to get you going with Microsoft's Analysis Service I can highly recommend "MDX Solutions".

I can only give the book two stars because
      a.) I don't want to seem schrill.
b.) There may be people out there willing to devote a large amount of time reading a defensively written tome about generic concepts that don't translate into real world products - which in 2006 are way ahead of this book.

4 out of 5 stars Fundamental Olap principles.......2003-03-31

I was impressed by the quality of this book; this is probably the most complete book on OLAP theory and is a fundamental reading for professionals involved in the design of olap systems. In most cases it gives all the details and information needed to master this technology. It also contains some practical examples that are very useful to see how the theory can be applied in the real world.
I didn't read the first edition, but the second edition contains new sections and many updates, like a description of SQL-99 OLAP extensions.
The author chose to be vendor-independent, so all practical examples are based on a multidimensional language that he created, called Located Contents (LC). However, when I read it I had already used a couple of OLAP tools (Microsoft Analysis Services and Microstrategy), and I think that this helped me understand many of the concepts contained in the book.

4 out of 5 stars Good OLAP Methodology.......2002-12-02

OLAP is a somewhat arcane corner of the IT universe and this book is a good guide to it for information and business professionals. It covers the basics well and provides decent exaples to get you going.

Of course, the hardest part of OLAP is making the conceptual leap from relational databases and transactional processing to the world of analytical processing, but finance experts and accountants will appreciate OLAP and its ability to summarize data in a way that is hard to do in most ERP and legacy systems.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for anybody involved in Olap design.......2002-09-05

A book which gives you a comprehensive theoretical foundation together with useful, pratical techniques to design Olap solutions.
In the first half of the book the author explains you all you need to think clearly in N dimensions, in the second half he guides you through the design of a rather complex application, stepping into the purchasing process, the material inventory analysis, sales & marketing, and activity-based management. He teaches you using maieutics, Socrates' way of teaching, via a dialogue between two designers. This way, a lot of questions that usually arise during real-life development are examined and solved.
Whilst the examples in the first edition of this book were based on TM1, in this second edition they are written using a vendor-independent language, called LC (Located contents), which provides you with a solid, logically based foundation to multidimensional design.
The vendor languages, like those used by Microsoft Analysis Services (MDX), Applix TM1, Oracle Express and Hyperion Essbase, are kind of Plato's shadows in the cavern of this ideal language (which is sort of a tautology for MS Plato...), so if you start thinking in LC, you'll be able to work with all of these products.
Ideal complements to this book, if you use Microsoft Analysis Server, are "MDX Solutions" by George Spofford, and "Microsoft Olap Solutions", by Thomsen (again!), Spofford and Chase.

Dont forget that taking the exams requires also a bit of experience:)

4 out of 5 stars Great review book, but know it thorougly.......2007-01-27

I just passed the 271 with an 899 and the 272 with a 916. This book was my only study resource, but I have been working with the XP OS on-the-job for four years.

The difficulty of the test comes from Microsoft's method of testing. Even though I did very well, I only had "warm fuzzies" with half of the questions as I was taking the test, because they really run your brain through the wringer. So, you must understand why all of the other choices are clearly wrong and only one is right, and this entails knowing the material thoroughly.

The only problems I had with the book are is the horrible amount of typos and strange program behavior with the practice tests, and the lack of anything other than multiple-choice questions.

Other than that, get hands-on training, read this book over and over, and be careful with the wording of questions on the actual exams.

      Book Description

In this comprehensive book, the authors start with an overview of those characteristics of Asperger Syndrome that make adolescence particularly challenging and difficult. The centerpiece of the book is a detailed discussion of strategies and supports necessary to ensure a sucessful school experience for students with Asperger Syndrome at the middle and secondary levels.

What sets thisbook apart is the way it ties all the recommended strategies together in a real-life study of Michael, a youth with Asperger Syndrome. This touch of real life continues in the closing chapter, which consists of statements by parents and adolescents with Asperger Syndrome.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent information for Teachers and Parents.......2007-09-28

I bought this book when it first was published 6 years ago. At that time I also went to a Smith-Myles workshop about the book. I am a special education teacher and parent of a child with Aspergers. My son with Aspergers just started Junior High. I've read several books on the subject, and it is the best I have seen having to do with Aspergers, adolescence, and school issues. Clear descriptions of the challenges kids face, modifications that may be necessary, tools to ensure success, and more. I recommend it to any parent or teacher of an adolescent with Asperger Syndrome.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT Starting point!!.......2007-08-14

This book is a fantastic starting point for parents getting ready to transition a kid on the spectrum from elementary to middle school. Lots of evaluation tools and guidance on who, how and when to use them. Lots of "backbone to borrow" when working with teachers, administrators and therapists to get a strong, individualized program designed and set up. Help with timelines, objections and obstacles, resource ideas, and setting priorities. The case study and personal history sections were very comforting (I really am not alone in this struggle) and informative (just what is important to a 12yo boy on the spectrum about school).

Highly recommended - but start early!

      4 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2005-10-17

As a clinical psychologist specializing in the field of Autism Spectrum Disorders, I have found this book to be an excellent resource. I recommend it to many families, and to teachers who work with this population. One of the strengths of this book is its articulate examination of the interplay between the cognitive, social and behavioral issues experienced by individuals with Aspergers. The book also suggests a number of intervention strategies that are realistic, practical and helpful for addressing skills deficits and encouraging the potential for individuals with Aspergers.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a book about academics in the adolescent years ! !.......2005-05-10

This book focuses specifically on academic issues of children with Asperger's in middle and high school. There are many other books about other aspects of Aspergers, but this is the only good book I have found on this specific topic.

Diane has a great understanding of the difficulties faced by child aspies who on the surface may be getting "good grades" but are failing in many other ways. Learning difficulties in these children can be subtle and often show up as incomplete assignments or "behavior problems".

The book has extensive information and checklists on evaluating the strengths, weaknesses, and needs for accomodations. The information is detailed and exhaustive.
A large part of the book is dedicated to supports and accomodations which can help students achieve their potential.

The book also covers the oft overlooked area of transitioning between elementary school and middle school. Many children getting by in elementary school can suddenly fall apart in middle school because of problems with executive functioning.

This book is a great book for both parents and school personnel. All parents of adolescent asperger children should read this book. It will help you identify the problems your child is having and help you brainstorm about possible "solutions." The book gave me a greater appreciation for the difficulties my son faces. I wish all schools would incorporate the many accomodations listed, but understand that the reality falls short of what these children need. You may not be able to get all the accomodations listed, but you can identify key areas and focus insuring those get included in your child's IEP.

Parents should buy one copy for themselves and one for the head of the special ed/exceptional student department.

4 out of 5 stars Good scheduling advice but little on pragmatics.......2003-02-05

There is a wealth of advice in this book which all parents and teachers should find helpful. Plenty of checklists are offered and numerous cameo case histories are presented. The references are good but perhaps a bit limited (may be of importance only to researchers - no mention of central coherence deficit for instance). The main point of the book is the get schools to recognise and deal with stress build up in AS pupils before it boils over. Some of this will be familiar from Myles' other book on tantrum management.

The advice for high school transition is very practical. Make sure he knows the schedule, pin the timetable everywhere, fix routine reminders inside textbook covers, make sure he knows which teacher tolerates which behaviour, etc. It is all good sensible advice, though I wonder how deliverable it is in the ordinary school setting?

The authors touch on 'circle of friends', travelcards and a host of other supports, but ultimately pin their support hopes on resource teachers and an enlightened school policy. Unfortunately, this is where I begin to part company with the book. Few schools could make the quantum shifts expected, and the authors could have made much more of their advice if they had identified compromise strategies. Teachers are human, not superhuman. Also in my limited experience, parents of AS teenagers often have unrealistic expectations of their offspring's academic performance and that tends to obscure their grasp of daily school realities. The classic example here is the emphasis on the 'gifted' child who must attend a 'gifted' school irrespective of the impact that has on the school and child. The authors tend to cite gifted children examples a lot in their case studies. I don't think this is helpful.

Perhaps unconsciously the book also portrays the AS teenager as very much a ship in the night steering a lonely course from class to class, from teacher to teacher, etc. How to help out here? Again, while friendship strategies are touched upon, no elabaorated plan is developed. A weakness to my mind.

The book presents the AS teenager as very much a patient to be treated by the environment. I don't want to appear overly critical of the book. It is good that adolescent AS are being addressed, however, for the life of me I could not grasp why there is no section on teenage communication pragmatics - these are extensively treated in another book Succeeding with Interventions for Asperger Syndrome Adolescents. The authors simply skate by the whole problematic of communication skills. It seems that as long as your 'gifted' child is doing well academically and no one is hitting him, then we should be pleased. This struck me as a very lobsided developmental philosophy. Interestingly the book points out in footnote in the beginning that it will ignore sexuality and relationship issues. Ignore these? In a book dealing AS adolescents?

Overall this is a good book for advising on schedule construction and maintenance of the daily school routine. It has limitations and depending on your needs they may be significant or otherwise.
