5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!!!A must have ........2007-06-27

Cannot say enough about how glad I am to own this. It has more than I would need to raise herbs. Concise. Beautiful pictures. Excellent reference source.

5 out of 5 stars A great resource book!.......2007-06-08

I purchased this book for a basic book about herb gardening. I used the reviews which were very helpful. It is fantastic! Not too confusing like some I purchased which were very technical. (Not being a scientist, I couldn't use a lot of them because I didn't know their botanical names!) This book is definitely user friendly. I am recommending it to my friends who also are getting into herb gardening. A lot of information for a good price, you won't be disappointed. Great recipe ideas too.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need!.......2006-08-07

I LOVE this book! It shows you how to grow, cook and use herbs in arrangements. It tells you what the history of the herb is and what other cultures have used them for. I'm not the best at writing reviews and I never do... but I would buy this one!!! It's a great price for a great book!

5 out of 5 stars A sauce for every occasion.......2007-08-11

This book really is "The Complete Book of Sauces". It would be hard to imagine what sauce recipe ISN'T in it. Not only does it contain virtually any kind of sauce recipe you could want, but it offers helpful ideas on what to serve with what. Also, the recipes are "doable" rather than some I've seen in other books that are so complex no one but a professional chef would even attempt them. In addition, the price was right, and it arrived very promptly in pristine condtion.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-01-10

Just the book I was looking for! Excellent coverage of sauces for beginners to "old hats"! Thanks!

4 out of 5 stars Numerous variations to try in a lifetime!.......2000-11-06

There are definitely more sauces in this book than you can possibly try. They are divided and arranged by type and purpose, which makes it easy to pick out the sauce that you need. Some of the ingredients are somewhat hard to find, but most recipes can be prepared with minimal fuss. My favorite part of this book is the marinades chapter.. you can combine a marinade with a similar sauce and end up with something spectacular. Another useful chapter is the fruit sauces chapter, which proved to be very valuable on that special occasion when you wanted to enhance the flavor of your desserts. No photos in this book though.

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Book of Sauces.......1999-12-04

This book is excellent, I have had success with every recipe I've tried. I refer to this book almost on a daily basis to make my dishes more interesting. If you buy only one sauce book this is the one to buy.

5 out of 5 stars One simple books adds fun and life to almost any dish........1998-10-10

It's now Oct 1998. I bought the book in 1990 when it first came out. I'm a business man, not a gourmet, but with this Sallie Williams book, polite lovely ladies have almost tackled me to get 'my recipes'. I have fun cooking because of this book, more than with any other cookbook. I pick a meat or vegetable, and pick a sauce. It always works, and leaves me feeling like I'm creating by selecting the combination of some dish with a sauce, plus dreaming up ways to display the food. So far it never seems to get boring, and after nine years there are still a lot of sauces I've not yet tried. I think the book will be with me for the duration. Highly recommended. The only downside is that 'favorite' sauces are easy to find in the book, and thus you have to avoid the temptation to stop exploring sauces not yet experienced.

This was my first purchase from amazon and I was totally impressed by the quality of the product and the service!

4 out of 5 stars Review for C The complete Reference by Herbert Schildt.......2006-02-23

This is an excellent reference book for C programming. I have been programming in C for a year now and this book has proved to be a valuable addition to my collection of C texts. The book is not designed for persons who wish to start programming in C for the first time. However, even if you are a beginner in C this book will be a tremendous asset to you, especially as you become more advanced in the C language. The standard libraries are covered in detail and accompany lots of examples. Most of the concepts of the C language are explained clearly and are accompanied by suitable examples. There are some areas that are a bit vague but this is more than compensated for by examples. I recommend this book for anyone who wishes to program in the C language but note this book alone will not be enough. It is a 'must have' in your collection but to get a full understanding of some of the C concepts you will need to have more C literature.

4 out of 5 stars Great once you know what you're doing........2005-12-23

I got this book as one of my first for programming a few years ago. I was able to compile some programs and have a basic idea of how the language worked. But it was really hard absorbing all of the information with just this book. It was the only thing I had to learn programming at first. When I took a class in high school for C, all of the information really came together. I knew everything we did in that class and then some. But the information gets a little dry. This book does what it is supposed to, though. If you spent enough time with it, you could very well learn how to program. But for me, I couldn't read it front to back like I had wanted to as a new programmer.

I suggest buying a companion book or taking a class before buying a reference book. After you learn how to think like a programmer, thats when you buy a reference book. Learning a language without knowing how to apply it was getting me nowhere. Great book though; I'm just throwing out a warning for anyone that is considering getting into programming, and using this as your first book.

2 out of 5 stars Entry in the Jargon File.......2005-08-21

I have no personal opinion, not having read this, although the negative comments sound reasonable...besides, you should always take a reference with a grain of salt (I wanted to rate "-", but was forced to select a rating). But the term Bullschildt has INDEED made it into the Jargon File.

Entry:

bullschildt: /bul'shilt/, n.
[comp.lang.c on USENET] A confident, but incorrect, statement about a programming language. This immortalizes a very bad book about C, Herbert Schildt's C - The Complete Reference. One reviewer commented "The naive errors in this book would be embarrassing even in a programming assignment turned in by a computer science college sophomore."

But just because there are naive errors doesn't mean it wouldn't be useful to somebody even more naive.

5 out of 5 stars It is really "the complete reference".......2004-08-18

This book teach you since the beginning of C for advanced techniques. If you are a beginner or a senior programmer, you must have this book, reasons:

- Teachs all C basics, with an easy and clean language;
- easy-to-understand code examples;
- shows the basics of artificial intelligence;
- shows data structures, binary trees, nodes, etc;
- Have a full part teaching how to write a C interpreter, using everything you've learned on the book. You'll be able to write advanced code after reading this part.
- And the MAIN PART of the book: has a complete reference of C functions, with list of parameters of each function, little description and examples.

The only bad thing is the chapter about pointers and matrices. In some parts I got confused. But, after reading the entire book.. I've understood all the logic involving pointers and matrices.

This is the most used C book here in the brazilian universities.

5 out of 5 stars I HAD NO PAIN AFTER CHILDBIRTH!.......2001-08-11

When I had my first child, I was in bed for 2 weeks hardly able to walk from the pain. It took me a whole year before I did not feel some kind of pain now and then if I walked a lot.

My friend loaned me this fantastic book and after following the childbirth recommendations for herbs, I can say with certainty, that 10 minutes after giving birth, I was up and around without any pain at all- EVER! Not even with an episiotomy!

My daughter was just as large as my son was too.

This book is a very thorough reference book with a LOT of information for women-specific problems.

Each herb has a color photo of it along with in depth descriptions of the herb, history and uses.

I found this book to be fabulous and a very important book to have. The delivery of my daughter was a shock to me- NO AFTER PAIN!

By the way, the birth pains were still strong- just the after pains were not there at all.

5 out of 5 stars A wealth of information superbly presented.......2001-08-06

This is one of the best herb books I've come across. The pictures and drawings of the herbs are excellent. The information is organized according to the seasons of a woman's life--puberty, motherhood, menopause, etc. There is also a lot of information on herbs for children and a section for general family care. A table at the end summarizing which herbs are useful for which ailments is a huge help when you are in a big hurry to find a remedy. Any woman who uses herbs at all should have this book. It's well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars My A-Z guide on how to heal myself!.......2000-09-19

This book has saved me hundreds of dollars in medical bills for the past 6 months. I have monthly urinary track infections, which cost money I rather spend somewhere else. This book gave me the remedy I needed to cure myself and save my wallet. I recommend this book to any woman who suffers like I do, it's great!

4 out of 5 stars The Complete Women's Herbal.......2000-02-05

This book is a wonderful sourse of information about health, illness, herbs and their properties. Many helpful recipes. It does lack a guide as to how much of the herbs to use for body mass - which is critical in not over or under using the herb as a medicine.

5 out of 5 stars A big source of knowledge preseted in the best of ways!.......1999-12-14

I can warmly recommend this fantastic book. If i only could buy one book about herbs this would be it. It discribes a wide range of different herbs and its contents have not much more to ask fore. Buy it!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Grimoire for the Green Witch by: Ann Moura.......2007-10-09

This Book is great for the Beginner, and advanced alike. It's written in simple, easy to comprehend grammar, and trusted by my circle, as well a few others that I know of. Don't think twice about ordering this book, you'll thank yourself, and the Goddess for finding it! Blessed Be!

5 out of 5 stars Good intermediate book.......2007-08-31

While I haven't read any of Ann Moura's other books, I picked this one up as a reference for writing my own rituals and such. I didn't think I would find the wealth of information I did. Most of the rituals she has included can be easily adapted to suit one's needs and some of the other reference type material can't be found in any of the books aimed more for beginners. This is truly a book for the intermediate or advanced practicioner. I highly recommend this book to those looking for something a step up from the introductory books.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-05-14

Book is just as described and arrived in good time. I would purchase from this seller again!!

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Wiccans, Pagans, Witches, and All Other Magical People!.......2006-09-08

This was one of those spur-of-the-moment purchases at Borders (you know, the book you buy practically unseen because your library is in need of new blood). I really didn't know what to expect from it, since flipping through it was somewhat confusing. I ended up buying the book on a Friday, and finishing it the following Tuesday. It went from being a book I never heard of by an author I'm vaguely familiar with, to a book that is my "go to" book for ideas, formulas, inspiration and everything in between, and Ann Moura has earned a spot as one of my favorite metaphysical authors out there. I, honestly, couldn't put this book down.

This book is a Grimoire in the truest sense of the word. It contains a little bit of everything, from various rituals and spell casting techniques, to pages and pages of charts and spell associations, some of it surprisingly advanced, and a lot of it something I've never seen in any other Wiccan/Witch related book on magic. While you don't have to read the book cover to cover, those who do are rewarded with a plethora of fascinating traditions, rituals, spells, and ideals related to green magic. This is one of those rare books which is perfect for the beginner, but still perfect for the intermediate or advanced practitioner. The beginner will find the first chapter, which contains information on everything from the Creed of the Green Witch, to the Sabbats, Basic Tools, and Altar Arraignment to be an invaluable tool to help them transition into working magic. Those who've been on the path for awhile will positively wear out their chapter related to spell crafting and correspondences. I particularly found the sections on Geomantic Characters, Planetary Squares, Planetary Seals, and Planetary Hours to be of spectacular value.

The Quick Spell Chart in Chapter 8 is positively genius... The quick spell chart has the most common basic goals of spell crafting (Blessing, Cleansing, Fertility, Abundance, Success, Warding Evil, Releasing Negativity, etc), accompanied with categories to help you quickly set up and design a spell so as to encourage the best results. For example, if I wanted to do a spell to increase my psychic awareness, I'd go to the Quick Spell Chart, look up "Psychic Power," and read down the columns to see what the best Moon, color, elements, days of the week, Planetary influences, numbers, Ogham, Runes, Herbs, Incense, and Stones are for the spellwork.

The spells and rituals given in this book are not your standard, run-of-the-mill spells and rituals, so this book won't be yet another book that tells you how to do the same 6 spells. While the author is quite clear that these spells can be done "as is written," she also is quite clear that the best way to use the spells is to change and adapt them to your own needs. And it's hard not to be inspired by what she writes. The rituals she shared that I thought were especially beautiful were the Companion Quest and the Passing the Midhes rituals. I can't really explain them in any way that does them justice, but both rituals utilize the use of black mirrors to contact spiritual companions and/or resolve persona conflicts and/or gain insight into past, present, and future situations. They are unlike any other spell I've ever seen, really, and I think this book is worth it for those two spells alone.

The section that I found surprisingly wonderful were the meditations section. I'm not a big meditator, but I really connected with the suggested meditations that the author shared. I thought they were creative, interesting, easy to apply, and I have found that the results are beyond my wildest dreams... Or should I say meditations?

I think some people may find the layout of this book confusing (especially people who are new to the craft), which means that you're probably better off buying this book along with another of the books by this same author if you're new to the path. Though, it should be said I haven't received any other books by this author yet, but I did get the definite impression she was building upon ideas, principles, and concepts she worked with and introduced in other books, which would have probably prevented some of my confusion. I'd imagine this book along with her other series would be an unbeatable reference. It should be said that this is certainly not a Wicca 101 book (it should be said this isn't even a book about Wicca, it's a book about Witchcraft that can be used Pagans, Witches, and Wiccans), so if you're unclear of any aspect on magic practice, this should not be the first or only book you get.

My only problems with the book was that I was a little disappointed with the oils section, as I was kind of hoping for more in the way of oil recipes, though I bet that if I got any of her other books I'd find what I was looking for. I also could have wished she'd included a section on ritual recipes and foodstuffs. There were a couple of recipes, but you know that a woman who's been in the craft for 30 years, who learned from her family, has got to have some *spectacular* ritual recipes. Again, she could have shared it in other books and I wouldn't know, but I think that this book could have used a ritual food section.

As far as I'm concerned, this book is a "must-have," if you have any of her other books or not, simply for inspirational value. If this book doesn't make you want to run out and do ritual, nothing will!

5 out of 5 stars I love this book.......2006-07-30

I own this book. I use it all the time in my spell craft. It has been very helpful to me in my search for more.

5 out of 5 stars Great Guide for Most of Us.......2007-10-01

For someone without a lot of baking experience who wants to know how to make a wide variety of breads and baked goods using readily available ingredients and supplies, this may be the best choice out there. There are recipes for virtually every type of non-pastry bread or baked flour product, without too many unnecessary details or confusing diversions from the task at hand. If you are an avid amateur baking purist, you might find the book's almost exclusive reliance on commonplace industrial leavening agents such as dry yeast and baking powder, and otherwise plain presentation of the art of baking, to be a trifle unsophisticated. However, the book also includes instructions for more elaborate procedures, such as making and using various leavening starters, for those so inclined. This book de-mystifies bread making and offers many helpful tips and shortcuts that are most welcome to those that just want to make a variety of breads in a typical home kitchen, without making a lifelong quest out of it. Illustrations are sparse, but are judiciously included.

The recipes I've tried were easy to follow and resulted in a delicious end product, every time. This is a cookbook, that can be taken into the kitchen and used one recipe at a time. You don't need to read large sections of the book or flip through multiple pages to follow most recipes. Consequently, there is a lot of repetition in the instructions and the book is thicker than it needs to be, strictly speaking. If you bake all the time the repetition will be unnecessary. But for most of us, the self-sufficent presentation will probably prove quite handy.

Review is based on the 2006 edition.

5 out of 5 stars unusual recipes.......2007-09-27

I first tried the Blue Ribbon French Bread recipe while trying to find a Po-Boy bread formula. This recipe was just unique enough to be perfect! The author definitely isn't presenting the same old tired combinations every other cookbook author has. Clayton is unique. You might not appreciate it if you are a new baker but you will quickly enough. Easy to follow with a little thought and he allows for all the mixing scenarios.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Comprehensive Bread Recipe Book Ever!.......2007-06-01

These recipes are very easy to make and each one has been so delicious. I have been making bread for over 55 years, and these recipes are so varied and elegant on the palette. So different from any that I have made in the past. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves home made breads.

4 out of 5 stars a real bread 'bible'.......2007-05-12

Well, you cannot beat this book for shear volume. Almost every single page on this very thick book has at least one recipe on it. Bernard Clayton has been baking bread for longer than a lot of us have been alive. I would bet that you will be able to find a version of whatever type of bread you are looking for in the book. I didn't give it five stars for personal reasons. I am an artisan bread baker and have gotten into the principles of using less yeast and going for the slow ferment. That being the case, the book feels 'dated' to me in areas where Bernard calls for what seems like so much yeast to me now, and sugar. That said, I do recommend this book and consider it a welcome addition to my collection, it is a wealth of recipes to have on ones' shelf in one volume. For beginners it is great because much of the recipes are very straight forward, no fussing around. And for the more experienced, or those that are into the slow-rise, etc,
one can just alter the technique.

5 out of 5 stars an instant bread maker.......2007-04-09

I bought this book a year ago and I love it so much I had to take the time to tell someone about it. If you have never made bread before or thought it was too much work...all you need is this book and a stand up mixer to do the work for you. Most basic white breads can be ready for rising in 20 minutes without much work. The organization may look confusing at first glance, but it is not after making a few of the simple white breads which my family love and become disappointed when they see the store bought bread in the cupboard. The "rich white bread" recipe is a staple in our home and lasts for a full week when stored in the fridge -that is if it isn't eaten first. The festive bread recipes are also fun and bring something special to the holidays. The Finnish bread is excellent. For social get-togethers, you can bring the bread and still have plenty of time to get ready while it rises.

I read and tried a couple of the diets to reduce ailments I experience. No help to me but maybe it'll be different for you. The only "Miracle" from the Diets I experienced was how the weight was Miraculously lost in my wallet.

5 out of 5 stars Beginners READ THIS!.......2006-05-18

If you are a JAVA beginner you MUST have this book. It's an excellent reference book and even today (after so many years in the Java industry I still consult with this book)

I have read numerable books in the area and this one really rocks (again, beginners only).
It takes the reader step by step (and with gloves made of silk) and explains the concept of OOP with great and useful examples.

I liked the chapter on the multithreading since it was illustrated with excellent examples.

4 out of 5 stars Good book but would be helpful to have some excercises.......2004-11-05

This is one of the better books on J2SE 1.4. In fact, I had first started reading Core Java 2 book but it was very confusing. Mr.Schildt has really arranged the topics well.
The only drawback is that there are no excercises for the initial chapters on Java programming. A few such problems would go a long way in helping readers get really comfortable with the different aspects of Java and OOPs

4 out of 5 stars Begineers Delight !!!.......2004-10-25

The best way to learn a new programming language is to churn a lot of code and get familiar with the language semantics and richness. Mr. Schildt follows the same teaching paradigm and initiates a novice in the world of OOPs programming using Java.

The book is of course not suitable for a person who has some background in Java. The book definitely targets the uninitiated in the OOPs concept and builds up considerably upon the concepts gradually. Some pros about the book:
    * The book covers the language basics very neatly.
    * Numerous examples make the comprehension better.
    * Chapter on 'Multithreading' and 'Exceptions' are well written and neatly illustrated with working examples.
    * Treatment of Java Event Delegation Model is one of the best among all the available texts.

    Some cons for the same:
    * Less focus on Swing and more on AWT.
    * Very little coverage of important topics like 'RMI' and 'Serialisation'.
    * Poor treatment of important topics like 'Inner Classes'.

All in all from a novices' perspective, the book presents a good starting point. But from an advanced programmers' point of view - the book has still miles to go.

    4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2004-08-19

Not the right place to start off learning the language but definetely a must have for serious Java programmers.

The only reason I give it a four is because of its bad paper quality and non-colored presentation.

    4 out of 5 stars A Good Reference Book.......2004-06-23

I got this book as a prize at a Java User Group meeting. Overall, it's a good reference book to keep. One thing I wish it had covered is the JSPs, since it does cover the Servlets.

5 out of 5 stars The Spice Cookbook.......2006-09-19

My husband introduced me to this cookbook over 30 years ago and it has been a favorite ever since. The recipes are flavorful and easy to make. The section on spices is very informative and helpful. The only thing I do differently than spelled out in the recipes is to use fresh onions instead of dried.

This book is favorite of my mother's and was given to me. I am now sending a copy to my daughter. The recipies are outstanding.

I have had to replace this cookbook, because I have used it so much...I enjoy the artwork.
I am reminded of how at one time, food might have been very bland without spices.
I cherish this book and hope I will not have to replace it again...

5 out of 5 stars My favorite cookbook I use all the time.......2005-01-05

This cookbook was a gift from my mother. I have always used it for over 34 years to find unusual or special recipes. After I made several recipes that caused my mother (a wonderful cook) to rave, she said that she wished she had kept it for herself, instead of giving it to me. Recently, I found 5 used copies of the book that I bought for my two daughters, my daughter-in-law, two nieces, and my sister-in-law. It is the best cookbook. Too bad it is out-of-print! I wish the binding were made of steel, because I have had to mend mine several times--it is loved and cooked to pieces.

5 out of 5 stars used this cookbook for 20 years!.......2003-12-16

My mother and her two sisters each received this cookbook in the sixties for a Christmas present, and I was lucky enough to end up with one. This has been my "flagship" cookbook...the one I turn to again and again. The stories about spices are interesting, and every recipe I have tried I have used over and over for company as well as everyday meals. There is enough basic cookery information for even very new cooks. I want to give a copy to my daughter so this can be a legacy cookbook.
