Book Description
Alan Lee, the Oscar-winning conceptual designer for the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, discusses his approach to depicting Tolkien's imaginary world. The book presents more than 150 of Lee's celebrated illustrations to show how his imagery for both the illustrated Lord of the Rings and the films progressed from concept to finished art. In addition, the book contains 20 full-color plates and numerous examples of the conceptual art produced for Peter Jackson's film adaptation.
The Lord of the Rings Sketchbook provides a wealth of background information and will be of interest to those who know and love Tolkien's work, from books to films to DVDs, as well as to budding artists and illustrators interested in how to approach book illustration.

Tremendous and stunning.......2007-07-24
Alan Lee shows us a wonderful "behind the scenes" look at the artistic design of not only the films of the same title but also behind Lee's famous watercolors. Looking through the pencils on these pages, I felt a bit like I myself was a hobbit journeying through foreign lands :) Scribbles turn into magical doorways and dark and foreboding forests. Lines wave and toss and turn into flowering trees or cloaked wanderers. The searching chaos of Lee's hand in his drawings are made very evident in this book. Like a man who is not sure of where he's going when he begins his road in life, Lee peers into corners and shadows at times before settling on a road. Whether dark or light, joyful or scary...eventually he finds his way. Though the drawings don't seem random there is an elegant freedom present in his works, as if Lee was not bound by the traditional fences of art and design "rules." I was awestruck at some of the work and how gesture became finished works and how they flowed back and forth like music in one composition. This might sound silly, but sometimes when I'm looking at these drawings it feels as if I'm walking with the artist, side by side, and we wander through this world of his. "No, not here," he says, and turns from a winding staircase, or a puff of smoke, and we wander into yet another realm where he can explore. I can understand Jackson's likening Lee's work to poetry.
The book is very well crafted and put together and this is by far my favorite "art" book of all.
worth every penny.......2007-06-06
if you like pencil drawings then this is the book for you! uncountable number of awsome alan lee drawings. and he tells alot about many of the drawings.
Great work.......2007-01-09
Alan Lee is an extraordinary artist. His work here is wonderful for anyone who loves pencil drawings and sketches, as do I.
excellent stuff.......2006-11-11
good collections of the artwork. I held off on getting it for a while, given the somewhat lightweight reviews of the previous folks, but I think it is a pretty good run of pics.
Beautiful art worthy of Tolkien.......2006-11-10
This book by Alan Lee is really spectacular. His art has always been beautiful but this sketchbook really gives insight into the preparations done for the Peter Jackson LOTR movies. The narrative is also quite interesting. If you love the Jackson LOTR movies and Alan Lee's work, you won't be disappointed.

Book Description
Tolkien's Lord of the Rings epic tale has long captivated readers with its parallels to biblical truth. And now, a new addition to the thirsty(?) line, Walking with Frodo looks at the biblical themes found in the classic Lord of the Rings trilogy. The 18 devotions pair vices and virtues (deception vs. honesty, light vs. darkness, good vs. evil) displayed by characters in The Lord of the Rings and bring to light what the Bible has to say. A must-have for longtime and new series fans.

Thank You Sarah.......2006-07-30
Sarah Arthur has become one of my favorite authors with her two devotionals based on the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. Walking with Frodo, was a tremendous help to me, when I read it I was very angry with a lot of people for a lot of reasons, but as I read it I began to lose my anger, and feel free from that burden. This book helped change my life, and it can do the same for you. The two best ones from my point of view were the devotions writen about Sam and Aragorn. It's a must for any Tolkien fan.
Doesn't always hold up..........2005-08-25
This is a very enjoyable devotional book, or just a book to sit down with on a rainy day. I didn't really get much out of it, though, either about Lord of the Rings or Christianity. Some of the "parallels" the author draws between characters in LotR and real life are flimsy and don't make much sense--she compares Faramir, for example, to someone you see at a party one night, having a great old time, and leading a Bible study the next. Huh? It maybe could have benefited from some more in-depth looks at certain things.
But it's good, especially for Lord of the Rings-obsessed Christians.
Walking With Frodo- a teenager's review.......2004-11-10
I got this book just because I like Lord of the Rings and I thought it sounded cool. I never knew how good it would really be! The author does a really good job of getting into the character's minds and motives and applying their situations and choices to real-life situations. This book was written for high school and college students, but I would reccomend it to adults too. How much spiritual truth can you learn from a pop culture phenomenon? You will be very surprised!
Excellent and make a place on your keeper shelf!.......2004-08-26
You don't have to be a LOTR fan to enjoy this book. This book can appeal and speak to teenagers and adults alike. In fact, I recommend it for everyone! Sarah Arthur does of marvelous job of using the lush backdrop of Tolkien's fairy tale to speak truth of character from a Christ-like perspective with scriptures as support. It's an easy read, yet deep - leading to thought provoking questions for discussions at the end of each chapter. I love the chapter on Integrity! Hats off and well done Sarah Arthur - truth in character without ever sounding trite!
Terrific novel..........2004-08-06
**** For decades, Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and all things Middle Earth have captured the hearts and imaginations of young and old alike. Despite J.R.R. Tolkien's insistance that it was not an allegory, millions of Christians see the greatest story ever told just beneath the surface, as if runic words inscribed its pages. Whether or not you read that into this modern mythos, it can not be denied that Aragorn, Gandalf, and the rest of the Fellowship captured the meaning of virtue in their lives. From wisdom to loyalty to graciousness, they were examples of what we should be. Likewise, in Denethor, Grima, Sauron, etc, we see what we should strive not to be. In this book, the author takes these traits two by two, the good and the evil, and shows us how it played out in Middle Earth, in the Bible, and how to carry it into life. Given the popularity of this saga, it works with great efficiency. It would be a wonderful cross generational Bible study, especially since she takes the time to clue readers in on the teen jargon's meaning. For that alone, parents should invest in this book. It's a book designed to be read over several weeks, but you will have to exercise restraint not to sail through it in one sitting, so readable is it. ****

The best book on the book/film contrasts.......2007-08-06
I found this book enormously helpful in figuring out what I had seen and how the material had been adapted for the screen. The authors of this book have a deep knowledge of the Tolkien texts and they have also viewed the films and DVDs very carefully. The assessments are balanced, well informed, and not likely to be surpassed as a commentary on the transformation.
Brilliant and balanced.......2006-08-16
This highly recommended title explores Tolkien's Lord of the Rings vs. Peter Jackson's film adaptation of it. The several essays chosen by the editors are all very convincing and well-researched. They're also immensely enjoyable to read for those who've read Tolkien and seen the film (or vice versa) and love to compare the two. The editors were also careful in presenting a balanced view, for both pros and cons are represented (sometimes even within the same essay.) And there are even some essays on Tolkienian fan-fiction (and slash) that's proliferated on the net. Truly an engrossing study of Tolkien's work and Jackson's successes and failures in adapting it! I hope a second volume is being considered...
very useful.......2005-10-26
Very interesting read, well written and witty. Recommend especially for people studying Lord of the Rings.
Book Description
Can power be wielded for good, or must it always corrupt? Does technology destroy the truly human? Is beer essential to the good life? The Lord of the Rings raises many such searching questions, and this book attempts some answers. Divided into five sections concerned with power and the Ring, the quest for happiness, good and evil in Middle-earth, time and mortality, and the relevance of fairy tales, The Lord of the Rings and Philosophy mines Tolkien’s fantasy worlds for wisdom in areas including the menace of technology, addiction and fetishism, the vitality of tradition, the environmental implications of Tolkien's thought, Middle-earth's relationship to Buddhism and Taoism, and more.
Customer Reviews:
Make room for that lembas, you don't need this.......2007-10-06
"The Lord of the Rings and Philosophy" hoists itself upon two basic foundations in the form of numerous essays by prominent 'philosophers': one foundation rests upon things readers already know since leaving Middle-earth, the other upon things that just don't make a lot of sense, and in some cases, are devoid of any useful Tolkien parallels (essay about nanotechnology essay, for instance). To all students of "Lord of the Rings," there is no exceptional insight in the entirety of this book, and even if you did learn something new about Tolkien's epic, then you didn't pay enough attention to the story. That's the problem with this book, in that delving into 'LOTR' and discovering these themes for your own self is what is so magical and fun about them in the first place, in addition to all the adventure. This collection doesn't serve as a useful alternative or beneficiary to the Tolkien legacy, so there's no need to pack this one along for the journey. You'd be better off trekking through Middle-earth with Gandalf and Frodo alone anyway.
Quality varies, as with any multi-authored work........2006-06-27
Some of the essays offer real insight into LOTR; others seem to be using LOTR as a convenient peg on which to hang the authors' special interest. However, all show that LOTR is a work of more substance than many would give it credit for.
Its about Philosophy........2005-07-22
If you buy this book looking for what philosophical ideals Tolkien imbued his literature with, you may be disappointed with this book. While there are some essays I think Tolkien would certainly agree with, there are also many he wouldn't. This book is first and foremost about philosophy. What this book does is illustrate different philosophical ideas by using characters and situations from the Lord of the Rings as examples to help you understand. With this in mind, I think a lot of people can certainly enjoy this book.
For Philosophers Only --well mainly.......2004-11-11
If you don't have any interest in higher thinking, and just want to read something else that deals with the Lord of the Rings or thought that the picture on the cover looked cool. I suggest going over to the Fiction section in Amazon, this book is not for you.
For intellecutally minded people. This book will help getting you to see many different levels in what you read. The first essay takes Nietzsche and introduces UberHobbits...I really appricated seeing more serious types of philosophy being interegrated into the thought provoking literature that has come about in this day and age.
I also suggest the other Popular Culture and Philosophy series, for serious minded people. Having a basic understanding of Philosophy is helpful before picking these up. They do not spell out what the philosophical theories they are applying they are expecting you to know it already.
Superb.......2004-08-16
This was an absolutly wonderful book. As a fan of Tolkien and his universe, I was joyfully bemused to find that there was a "Lord of the Rings for smart people", and this book has lived up to its montif.

Great resource to help explain diversity initiative.......1999-04-06
This book provides a great "big-picture" view of what a diversity initiative might involve. The authors address diversity with a perspective that a diversity initiative is more than an education program, and give explanation to some othe systems and processes that must be addressed in order to be successful at integrating diversity into an organization. A big positive is that the authros do not use the race/gender basis for diversity, but expand the definition to include many other characteristics that almost all people can realte to. I highly recommend the book.
Trite, simplistic and not worth the money.......1998-12-12
Managing diversity is a subject that does not lend itself to simplistic, checklist solutions. Yet, that is exactly what the authors provide - a plethora of superficial recipes. Not particularly thoughtful and not at all practical for real-world use.
Real diversity management is far more complicated than this text would suggest!

Book Description
The official, fully authorized full-color guide to the characters, places, and landscapes of J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth as depicted in The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy.
Fully illustrated with almost 300 color photographs, including stunning new images from the extended director's versions of The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers, and exclusive "first-look" shots from The Return of the King, this Complete Visual Companion now tells the whole tale of The Lord of the Rings in sumptuous detail.
The many characters, creatures, and strange lands of Middle-earth encountered by the Fellowship of the Ring in their epic journey are here brought to life: from the magical Elven realms of Rivendell and Lothlorien to the abandoned Dwarven kingdom of Moria; from the wizard Saruman's stronghold at Isengard to the land of the Horse-lords, Rohan; from their last-ditch fortress at Helm's Deep to Minas Tirith, the city-kingdom of the proud Men of Gondor; from the haunted Paths of the Dead to the battlefields of Pelennor and the overrun city of Osgiliath; from Cirith Ungol and the Nazgul's tower of sorcery at Minas Morgul into the very heart of Mordor. Along the way our heroes will encounter Elves and Ents, Uruk-hai and Orcs, Trolls, and Haradrim on their towering war-elephants, the mumakil. The Companion introduces readers to the monstrous Shelob the spider, to the Corsairs of Umbar, and to that pitiful but deadly creature Gollum.
This omnibus edition also includes brand-new sections appearing in print for the first time, which take the story of the quest of the Fellowship beyond Mount Doom, all the way to the hearbreaking finale at the Grey Havens.

Excellent Companion for LOTR fans........2007-03-19
I purchased this item for my 8-year old nephew who discovered it at his school library and could not get enough time with it. It is very popular at his school. Even though he has the other three individual visual companions he still wanted this one as it has pictures that are not in the other books. If you or your child are a LOTR fan you will want to add this book to your ccollection.
A good LOTR book but..........2005-06-17
While Jude Fisher's writing is even and sometimes evocative, this compilation of all three visual companions feels a bit superfluous. I mean, Lord of the Rings is great, and I'm happy to see that it hasn't been merchandised to death like the Star Wars prequels. But this isn't one of my favorite LOTR books for three reasons:
1. Not enough images from Return of the King and too Fellowship heavy 2. An unsubstantial feel to the Isengard and Gondor chapters 3.Certain characters don't get wrapped up (Saruman and Denethor) But it's still a good read and a nice addition to anyone's LORD OF THE RINGS collection. Personally though, I prefer the 'ART OF' books.
A Nice Compilation.......2005-01-26
I purchased this book because I had been told that it contained all the photos from Jude Fisher's three previous visual companions: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King, which I had seen, but not purchased. While it does have some of the photos, it doesn't have all of them. Photos in certain sections have been replaced by others, and in my opinion, in some cases, the replacements aren't better pictures. Two things would have made this book worthy of five stars. First, if it had been done as an oversize hardcover like its predecessors, and second, if the three individual visual companions had been entirely reprinted in this one volume, and then additional photos added. Now that I have this trilogy compilation, I won't be buying the other three individual companions, but I am sorry not to have those missing photos.
Great Picture Book.......2005-01-18

good wrap up.......2005-01-06
This is a good summary of the three movies as well as the three other visual companions. As the owner of all three previous companions, I found some of this information old, but still interesting. The pictures as well as the end of this companion, which gives good details, is a comprehensive look at the movies with a couple book tie-ins. Overall, I would say it's a great buy if you don't own the other three, and still interesting if you do.

Great Food! Very Good Book!!!.......2002-08-30
I am a female lightweight bodybuilder and fitness enthusiast. I really needed to learn more about low-fat/healthy cooking that my family would enjoy and eat. (I already know how to make the fattening stuff!) This book has wonderful recipes. The cheesecake is so good people don't believe it is low fat, the tuna dip is excellent for parties. I am really enjoying everything I have tried. I thought the use of fat-free products would be bland and not appealing at all, but I was very wrong. The recipes are very tasty. One drawback is that some of the recipes are confusing, ie. the cheesecake ingredient list calls for fat-free yogurt, then recipe states "to add lemon yogurt". So be sure to read the recipe entirely before shopping so you can be clear on what you really need to buy. Also, the nutritional information is not always accurate. (I plugged some of the recipes into a nutritional software program.) But it is a good book with great recipes nonetheless. I am buying it as gifts for all of my friends.
Finally!.......2002-06-26
I am a new fitness competitor, and I had a hard time adjusting to the "off season". I didnt know how to eat, and how to cook! This book has become my staple. I have made soooo many recipes in here and have yet to be disappointed. The fact that she breaks down the macronutrients is wonderful for those of us that need to watch them closely! I even think it would be great for someone who wants to learn about a healthy lifestyle.
The banana fudge cake is wonderful!!!!!
love it!.......2000-01-15
Variety of recipes, easy (fast) prep time, and nutrition breakdowns for the recipes are the highlights that make A Taste...a worthy purchase
D-e-l-i-g-h-t-f-u-l!.......1999-09-02
I finally picked up both of Laura's cook books and I was especially pleased with the variety in this one. The recipes are generally, full meal types- a combination of both carbs and proteins and, of cource, low in the fat department. So far, I have tried 6 different recipes and all have really impressed me. I also liked the fact that she lists the calorie information on each recipe. Thats helpful in planning my diet- and saves a lot of time looking up calorie counts in books.
