The Complete Idiot's Guide to Genealogy.......2007-03-23
As a newbie to genealogy, I find this to be a very helpful book. It points you in the directions that you should go and gives a lot of ideas that I would not have thought of.
Great Guide.......2007-01-14
This is a great book for beginners and experienced researchers. I recommend it to my students.

updated tripe.......2006-08-08
This edition of the book is more up-to-date, so it's actually useful somewhat. Mostly, though, it's a book written by experts for experts. There is little thought given to the practical application of genealogy -- making friends with newly found relatives, for example, and family reunions. There is no mention of the politics that go into genealogy. You can easily destroy your family by writing the wrong date for a marriage on your descendant chart, but the book totally omits important facts like that! It has a small chapter on DNA, which is nice, but it leaves out critical information on that topic, too. The "Idiot's" title of this book is misleading; the authors fail to think like a layman. Beware.
I Needed a Complete Idiots Guide to Online Genealogy!.......2006-08-03
Christine Rose's "The Complete Idiots's Guide to Online Genealogy" made me finally move from, "I am going to do a genealogic study of my father's family", to "I have been working on this project for two years, and am truly enjoying the experience".
The book is well organized, and easy to read and understand. I have in the past 5 years developed a memory problem that will not get better. I had become so afraid failure, I did not want to attempt learning something new again. I used "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Computers" years ago, and found it a great way to quickly ground myself in the basics. When I saw Ms. Rose's book, I knew it was my best opportunity.
I now have numerous books concerning genealogy, but "Idiot's" is dog earred and still the first book on the shelf. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to learn family history and genealogy and how to put together a family tree. Especially those who do not have the inside lingo.

Book Description
Area of Application: Personnel Selection, Potential Analysis, Professional Counseling, Personnel Development, Profiling, Psychology of Sports, Personality Research.
General Aspects: The Achievement Motivation Inventory (AMI) is a personality inventory -designed to measure a broad construct of work-related achievement motivation. It enables users to test candidates for 17 different facets of achievement motivation. The AMI is based upon the accepted theories of the construct, but uniquely it also integrates relevant social motives. Thus, in addition to the traditional scales, e.g., Confidence in Success or Persistence, scales such as Dominance or Status Orientation are also included. The AMI consists of 170 items to be responded to on a 7-point-Likert scale.
Reliability: Reliability (Cronbach's ) for the total score is = .96, and ranges from - = .66 to = .83 for individual scales. Retest reliability is rtt = .94 for the total score (rtt = .71 to rtt = .89 for single scales).
Validity: Content validity has been demonstrated by extensive research on all major aspects of achievement motivation. Expert ratings ensured that only relevant aspects are included. Additionally, confirmatory factor analysis shows a good fit of the model to theory. Construct validity is shown by correlations with related personality scales, e.g., Big Five inventories (ranging up to r = .72). Criterion related validity is indicated by prediction of grade point averages in US colleges (r = .22 for the total score and up to r = .29 for single scales) and early academic achievements (ranging between r = .21 to r = .36 on different scales). Studies have shown that there is high social validity in regard to acceptance of the test by examinees.
Norms: N = 335 US students; N = 410 US working adults; N = 1,267 German students; N = 166 German working adults. Additional norms for the German original are also available.
Test Duration: approx. 30 min.

Book Description
This book takes a hard look at the reasons why the government bureaucracy has failed as the nation's bill collector for child support...and how families get their money in only about one in five cases.
It's a national scandal that millions of fathers don't pay and get away with it. Their ex-wives and children often end (up on welfare af taxpayers' expense. Nationally, $50 billion is owed in back support.
This book is valuable to single parenets who need help in getting the child support they are entitled to. It offers help on how to obtain support, so that your family won't end up victims of a deadbeat dad, or in some cases, a deadbeat mom. The book is also meant for grandparents. who often must help support their daughter's children. Make The Jerk Pay goes beyond just explaining how to use the child support system. It tells how you can track down a missing spouse by using your own skills and available public records and the Internet. Beyond that. you will learn how to do some sleuthing to uncover money, property and other assets of the deadbeat.
Men may take offense at the book's title. But we consider it justified because nine out of ten deadbeats are men. For the custodial fathers trying to collect from deadbeat moms, this book is for you too.
Many men don't want the responsibility of being a father, so they end up divorcing their children as well as their wives. They run off, often moving from state to state. Some create new identities for themselves by changing their names and getting new Social Security numbers, new credit cards and driver's licenses.
They go to great lengths to conceal their assets from the families they abandon. Many arrange to be paid under the table so their earnings can not be traced or attached. Often they will flout court orders to pay child support, knowing they are likely to get away with it.
The tactics of deadbeat dads add up to a nightmare, financially and emotionally, for the mothers and children. Too often the mothers are left to fend for themselves at a time when they are least able to cope.
Many women will not even seek child support. They may fear hostility from their ex-husbands or partners, or feel that asking for child support is like asking for a handout.
Others shy away because they fear it will be costly, time-consuming and too much of a hassle to deal with the bureaucratic child support system.
If you are such a victim, you may feel abandoned and cheated. That's natural. Some women strike back by denying visitation rights to the father. That's a mistake. It hurts the child and gives the absent father an excuse for not paying child support.
But you need not feel that you are powerless. There are laws and state and county agencies which are supposed to help you. It's the responsibility of prosecutors and judges to aid you in getting support orders and enforcing them.
You can turn to support groups whose members know exactly what you are going through and can help you cope with the system. In the end, it's up to you to help find him and make him pay. Because you have the most at stake, you may have to become a squeaky wheel and pester child support officials to get your case moving.
There are countless mothers who have made the system work for them. You will read vignettes about some of these women and how they triumphed, often by the force of their will.

Essential reading.............2006-11-02
As unsettling as this book is, every man who is contemplating marraige should read it. You will get some idea of the forces arrayed against you when your wife decides to call it quits and move on to her next victim.
Can't wait until the law is actually fair.......2006-03-10
Completely crazy! Warning! This is a bible for gold diggers. It's amazing that in the 21st century, 30 years after Roe v. Wade that some women and men, for that matter, are still pulling this garbage. The choice to be a parent is 50\50 and no, ladies, it does not have to be decided at orgasm. For 30 years, women in the United States have had the right to choose to be or not to be a parent after conception. Abandonement, abortion and adoption laws give all women the right to decide whether or not they want to be parents. Men do not have this choice. They never have. Men are just expected to take a huge responsibility without any choice. That's being adult? In what crazy world? Why do you think more than 50% of marriages end in divorce in this country? No one in the United States should be forced by anyone to be a parent-Or forced into marriage because of a child. Women aren't. Stop playing victims. It's childish. Stop getting "religious" at convenient times(i.e. when you're pregnant). Where was your religion and morals while you were having unprotected, irresponsible nonmarital sex?
Men should have the same legal choices that women have, barring abortion. A man should be able to for a certain period of time following conception or notification of paternity, legally relinquish his parental responsibilities-that includes financial. Women have this right. Why shouldn't men?
When you accidentally get pregnant ladies and the father tells you he doesn't want to have the child, either abort, adopt or abandone or GET A LIFE! and raise it yourself without dragging other people like the reluctant bio-father and the child, for that matter, into the mess you've made.
Don't accuse "fathers by force" of running from their "mistakes". Accept their choice for what it really is, an attempt to correct their "mistakes". By keeping the children, you're not necessarily correcting your mistake, you're just compounding it.
Very good tips on finding information about the ex.......2004-07-07
Very slanted writing! However, it does offer some very good tips on finding out information about the ex (which might be useful before filing, during the divorce, or after if she leaves with the kid(s)). Check it out. It might be a good idea to see what you can find out about yourself so you'll know what might come up in court.
Worth a read.......2001-11-20
I have read many books on this subject and this one stands out as one of my favorites. The author covers many different "situations" and discusses many ideas on how to collect back child support. A lot of research was put into this book and I found it all very helpful and full of interesting ideas and suggestions.
Terrific Guidelines!.......1999-07-21
Rose and Malone give us great, easily usable guidelines for tracking down anybody. These authors know their stuff. From schools to property to driving records to work records, we all leave tracks. Now we know how to make those tracks work for us! Deadbeat parents, look out now.

The Revolution: A Field Manual for Changing Your World
Customer Reviews:
One sided and poorly written.......2007-08-12
This book covers a number of topics that evangelical Christians *do* need to educate themselves on, such as the AIDs crisis, gang warfare and the environment. The first few chapters of this book cover subject matter that most Christians - and non-Christians for that matter - will find broad agreement on. However, as you progress through the book, the leftist agenda becomes so obvious that you begin to question the book's objectivity. For instance, the chapter on the death penalty is written by a strident death penalty opponent who consistently applies straw man arguments. The chapter called "War and Peace" is a disaster. By this point, the reader will not be the least bit surprised to find that another left wing activist and pacifist writes this chapter. If you're looking for a good intellectual analysis of the Just War doctrine or acknowledgement that good Christians can come to to different conclusions about this topic, you will not find it in this chapter, either.
Clearly, this book was written with an agenda. But I'm not sure how much this actually advances the agenda of turning a moderate or conservative evangelical towards the progressive world view, because so many of the arguments are simply not that compelling or balanced.
Great enthusiasm, not very practical.......2006-08-29
I'm all about the idea of "Let's change the world." I speak about that message incessantly. My audiences get tired of hearing me utter those words I suspect. But as communicators it is our job to provide practical, doable, ways that can be immediately walked out ways of doing what we are calling people to.
Absolutely love the attitude behind the editor and various writers of each chapter of this book and the bottom line of the book, which essentially calls people to live radically differently. The only problem is - with a couple of exceptions - in order to carry out the ideas taken on in each chapter one would have to fly to another part of the world to put the action plan into practice or have an enormous amount of money to commence with the change. Considering the reading audience (Relevant readers) I suspect most will be frustrated when it comes to applying the ideas here.
Mother Teresa said of the US, "There is plenty to do right around you... don't fly to Calcutta. Open your eyes and get to work!"
Read this book and allow your heart to be captured by the zeal of each author, then get to work in your own backyard / city. Yes, we can change the world right here, right now.
A great manual.......2006-07-09
This was a great read. Easy to follow, great stories from experienced servants in social justice issues. Chapters are short and to the point. You read it and feel more equipped with what to do.
For want of works.......2006-06-13
Reading about social issues is like reading about physical fitness. I develop a tic, like restless leg syndrome. Don't get me wrong- collecting information and quotes is one of my favorite pastimes, but certain issues are a bugaboo to my conscience. When it comes to my top five- poverty, capital punishment, fair trade, peace, and hunger- I get impatient with sitting still, with learning. It's a good thing that The Revolution: A Field Manual for Changing your World is so easily digestible. Written and edited to answer the question "What can I do?" The Revolution is slickly edited for audiences disconnected from the problems addressed. It's four steps for action- donate, activate, educate and pray- belie the cushion that separates rich Christians from what Ron Sider calls "an age of hunger."
What troubles me is why we need slick editing to prompt us to action. The Revolution, with its motivating pull quotes, enervating sidebars and zine feel, is aimed at young Christians, and the niche market ensures that the book is sure to be noticed by those who are justice-minded. The essayists' anecdotes and research confirms our passion and the shame is that these may be lost to key audiences.
As I read I get a tic; I want to leap to action- to determine how this content may be used to educate and activate the Christians numbed by the ticker tape of human tragedy racing on the periphery of our consciousness. If only I could donate the book to educate campus-church Christians so they can study how to activate purposefully. But, until churches and small groups integrate action into their studies, I'm afraid that nothing will change. Small groups will wrap up with the only Christian work in which most are disciplined- prayer. What the book doesn't do is demonstrate that social justice involves other disciplines including inconvenience, long-term commitment and worn-out knees.
Must Read.......2006-05-09
One of the most important for Christians in the last ten years. Evangelical culture is headead for a significant chance, and this book will be considered a watershed event in this shift. If you want to be challened, informed and even entertained, you won't be disappointed. I couldn't put it down!.
